If directing a prequel adaptation to one of the biggest movie franchises in the history of film wasn’t enough, Guillermo del Toro has found yet another project to add to his already overfull plate. The Pan’s Labyrinth filmmaker will produce a remake of ABC’s 1973 television movie Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark for Dimension Films. Del Toro is adapting Nigel McKeand’s cult classic teleplay with his Mimic writing partner Matthew Robbins, and comic book artist-writer Troy Nixey (Batman, Matrix, Trout) will make his feature directorial debut.

The story follows a young girl who discovers sinister creatures that live underneath the stairs in her father’s house. The film is in the earliest stages of development, but the plan is to make this a creature feature with a focus on the unique and fantastical creatures from the mind of del Toro. But isn’t that what everyone wants from del Toro now a days? I can only imagine that del Toro’s voice mail is filled with messages from studio executives asking if Guillermo would be interested in making a big budget fantasy film like Pan’s Labyrinth, but in english and without the dark gore…

Anything that Del Toro does for me is going to be the best, i still haven watched The Orphange yet, but iheard it is good.

    This sounds very interesting though.

    Chris,

He didn't direct that film. But it's good. I would love to see him do Creature of The Black Lagoon. But the guy has so much stuff he wants to do. I doubt it would get done.

  • The original film is about a wife who discovers the little beasties in her new home, not a kid. Had a chance to see a film print of this last year at a 24-hour horror film marathon and it's a wild little flick.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is pretty great. It's cool to think that some of this stuff was produced for television. I'm pretty sure you can watch segments of the film on Youtube. TRy to find the bit where they drag the woman down the stairs.

The little onion heads are perfect for Del Toro.

Wow. I've been trying to remember the name of this film for a long time. I saw this a long time ago, not in 73', but as a re-run sometimes in the 80's. Weren't the little creatures like little Dumb Donald look a likes?

That movie freaked the hell out of me when I was kid. Kim Darby with the creatures at the end. Something about having all the time in the world. Still sticks with me. There was a time when the 70's TV movies had some creepy stuff. Duel, The Night Stalker and Trilogy of Terror all stand out.

Del Torro is an amazing director.

I expecially can't wait to see the Hobbit.

Can't believe that a remake is going to happen! I've been searching for info on this movie for some time. It freaked me out as a kid.
