The Princess and the Frog

Disney has released a teaser trailer for their upcoming 2D animated film, The Princess and the Frog. The film promises to return to the Broadway-style musical in the likes of the successful Disney films. I want to root for traditional animation, but this film doesn’t look like it even comes close to the standards set with Walt Disney’s classics. And in a day an age where audiences are spoiled with Pixar productions, a 2D production has to be three times as special. What do you guys think?

Written/directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, the animated musical is set in New Orleans. The movie follows Tiana, a young African-American girl who lives in the infamous French Quarter. The new movie will feature a soulful singing crocodile, voodoo spells, and the music of Randy Newman (as heard in the teaser). The Princess and the Frog hits theaters on Christmas 2009.

I just happen to finish watching the lion king for the first time in a long time, it takes me back to the good days...Dont think this will come close to that, but Hopefully this wont suck.
  • Christopher Edwards
Looks like a good cartoon for them but not going to be a classic in any case.
  • Captain Awesome
Nice teaser. It's liquid like Disney's classical standard. Looks beautiful so far. What does, "a 2D production has to be three times as special." exactly mean?

The oversea 2d markets do very well in the US and in Europe. Especially with hardly any marketing behind them. I don't think it has to do with being up to a certain standard. But more about not actually having much of an option here to go see cinematic "American" 2d animation.
  • Captain Awesome
Also, it's good to see her looks been evolving since that first image hit the net. You can see she's got more details on her face. She's got more black facial features than before.

Especially when you see her face animate when she speaks.
  • looks interesting. Hope it keeps an everyone appeal rather than just catering to the children alone.
  • Tom
    I though that was atrocious
  • Scott
I don't know for sure, but that sure sounded like Dr. John as opposed to Randy Newman - Which would make more cultural/geographic sense, yeah?
  • Blake
WACK, looks like such garbage compared to Pixar
  • I was fine with it, thought it looked like a cute little teaser for a cute little movie I might want to see.

And then that hideous firefly came.
  • mike
I agree, def sounds like Dr. John to me...
  • adm
the 10 minutes of 2d animation at the start of enchanted were great.
  • matt
^yes they were spectacular, and Enchanted as a whole could have been an amazing animated film, which Disney was well aware of.. Disney can definately pull of another 2D classic, this may be it..
  • Jennifer
how can so many people say it won't compare , already this is only a teaser trailer. I think its great disney wants to go back to traditional animation since nowadays its so rare & 3D animation sometimes can be unorignal
  • gocitizen
As a teaser, it was a little uninspiring. Because this film is now somewhat "unique" and so much is riding on it, they would do well to hold off until they can put together something that actually shows off the animation and art. This teaser didn't do much in that regard.

I'm thinking of the teasers and trailers for Tarzan. Those bits made me want to see that film.

Disney needs to show off some skill here.
  • adp
Honestly, I don't know how anyone can comment on the quality of the final film because of this one little clip. It's just a teaser with footage that's probably not going to be in the final film. Doesn't really give you too much to form an opinion off of.

The animation is positively gorgeous, though.
  • Matt
    I'm with Christopher.

And in a day an age where audiences are spoiled with Pixar productions, a 2D production has to be three times as special.

Wow. I sincerely hope you're not saying that the "wonders of 3D animation" automatically trump anything that's hand drawn.
  • Ted
I was fine with it right up until that hideous Cajun accent.
  • I still have high hoped for the movie, but that teaser was terrible.
I think the firefly COULD be a great and funny character, provided we can tell what he's saying in the film.
  • greycolumbus
"I want to root for traditional animation, but this film doesn’t look like it even comes close to the standards set with Walt Disney’s classics."

I think you're just spoiled, Peter. You mentioned it yourself that everyone is what with the incredibly high standards that Pixar produces and the incredible low standards that everything else from Disney makes.

I'm more worried about the impending backlash and the overall quality of the film.
  • Anne
I'm not a huge Pixar fan, and I'm really big into studying traditional animation, so I've been pretty stoked about this movie since I heard about it.

The teaser didn't really lower my expectations, I think it's adorable, and the great 2-D animation is something that I've missed for so long. Tiana and the frog look believable, and the firefly doesn't really bother me, either.

Also, this IS a teaser, we're not gonna get much out of it. Don't let this small clip ruin it for you (cause goodness knows how odd all the previews of Enchanted were to me, but I ended up loving that movie).
  • Meli
I enjoy 2D animation and it looked good in the teaser, which
started out cute then the firefly showed up and I kind of cringed.
On a whole I don't feel interested in this movie, but maybe the
    next trailer will change that.
  • The Radio Star
    Agreed with Tom.

    That was atrocious.
  • andy
Meth-addict fireflies = not as funny as you would think, I guess.
  • DebbieDebs
I don't think it looks nearly as well made as the original disney classics, but at least it looks like they have made more effort with the animation than has gone into the Disney sequels like cinderella 2 & 3! But it doesn't look too bad....
  • feed me a stray cat
am i the only one who found the firefly offensive? disney has lost it.
  • Captain Awesome
    DebbieDebs,

Those sequels you speak of are done by their Australian animation studio. Which was the only 2d studio left on Earth before the American studio decided to re-open. And I have to say for such a small studio. The animation and art in those sequels, doesn't suck.

@ feed me a stray cat,

What isn't offensive to anyone these days? How exactly is it offensive?
  • dubs
As a traditional animation student, I'm really hoping that this movie will be good enough to create a sort of animation renaissance. So fingers crossed in that regards.
  • I recently watched the Lion King again and I miss the good old 2D-Stuff, too - even the stupid musical-stuff is great when you watch stuff again, you liked as a kid.
  • The Radio Star
The firefly was no offensive. He was the best part of the whole thing.

    Which was atrocious.
  • w smith
Disney has forgotten how to do traditional animation. This along with all their most recent 2D efforts simply looks like 2D computer graphics - everything is too clean, too smooth - the layering is too obvious. Also, they've forgotten how to create appealing character designs. Bottom line... why are they bothering with this?
  • Captain Awesome
"This along with all their most recent 2D"

What are you talking about? This is their most recent American effort. Unless you don't count the piece they did in Enchanted.
  • krackajap
So...isn't the frog supposed to turn into a prince when kissed? So is there a reason why he's holding it over the fucking balcony so that if it does transform, he'll just fall to his death?
  • A Better Class of Criminal
Ehhh... I do like the classic Disney animation, but I have absolutely no faith they'll pull this off.
Pixar is the only thing redeemable about Walt Disney movies nowdays.
  • gocitizen
krackajap - THAT would have been a good teaser.

I'd prefer to see something with the sensibilities of Lilo and Stitch or The Emperor's New Groove. Disney can deliver when they don't committee themselves to death.

This animation design looks more like that era of Hunchback and Pocahontas - artistic, but dull.
  • w smith
by "most recent" I mean stuff that's come out in the last 10 years.
  • Gil Perez
That Firefly was a little off-putting.... but only because he reminded me of Jambalaya Jake from Darkwing Duck... he was like me LEAST favorite villain on that show....

    I GUA-RAN-TEE.
  • Batman fan
Disney REAALLY shouldn't have gotten Randy Newman to do the music, they shoulda stuck with Alan Menken......and what's up with the snaggletoothed fly that sounds like one of the yin yang twins??? ugh!
  • Walt Disney
Chinese ppl had Mulan the strong willed girl that's self reliant. Native Americans had pocahontas the tree huggin beauty with the heart of gold, Arabs had princess Jasmine the most beautiful princess in saudi arabia. White ppl had ( too many to count, mermaids, princess gisselle , belle, cinderella, snow white, sleeping beauty) Black folks get a girl who kiss frogs!!.....from LOUISIANA!!
  • pRINCESS TIANA
Long over due tho' , Wish they had used a different story tho' something "not" below the mason dixie line. Why do I feel it's gonna start off offensive and then grow on us =-). Disney are smart ppl. I'm confident their going to give it universal appeal
  • I'm all for an African American Disney princess, but it would be a shame if the movie she's featured in sucks.
  • [R3D]
Why do people hate the southern drawl so much i think its fitting for a movie like this.
  • [R3D]
Plus all you racist claiming silly people bitched about the chambermaid thing even though Cinderella was one. Cause a princess in 1920's New Orleans is much more believable :P. But then again there is a Talking Firefly so who cares about believability in a Disney cartoon.
  • Marie-Claire
Lilo and Stitch came out in the midst of the pixer success as well, and that was definately a great movie.

This is just a teaser people we really can't tell much from this other then that there is a frog and a princess and some kissing.
  • newschief
The frog animation is quite well done, for the few seconds we see. His face has a certain Pixar quality, so I'd guess there's some cross-pollination going on there. Remains to be seen whether the story will have more than appeal limited to little girils as Disney adds yet another character to its princess battalion.
  • Ignotus_Somnium
For a short clip, I didn't see much wrong with it. It's just a short teaser to say "Hey, we're making a movie you guys!" It isn't the full theatrical trailer. The animation is just as smooth as it was during the classic era.
Is the accent stereotypical? Hell yes. But I don't feel offended by it. Now, if they have all the people talking like southern belles or hicks then it'll be annoying--Steel Magnolias, I'm looking at you.
    (From south LA, btw)
  • simon kang
    i hate the trailer.
  • Andy
You people are way too critical. Why ya'll still complaining when Disney finally decides to make a black princess? If you don't like it, stop wasting your time with all the rant, and make your own animated feature film.
  • Cecilia
Okay; I don't understand this. Disney has just released a TEASER trailer for "The Princess and the Frog," and already everyone is starting to have doubts? Come on, people! You really can't expect much info from a small trailer like this, and can't bother saying it's going to suck or Disney has lost it if the trailer lasts for one minute.

Personally, this film looks beautiful, and I'm one of the many people estatic about the first 2D animated film since 2004; I don't find anything offensive, not Tiana, not New Orleans, not the frog, not even the firefly (Yes, feed me a stray cat, I don't find the firefly offensive. Good grief!). People really need to stop being so judgmental on films like this, and give it a chance. You can't tell if it's going to be good or bad from the teaser trailer, or say that a certain character is offensive to you.

A whole year can hopefully change the opinions of many people, including myself, mainly in a positive way. Give this film a chance, and support 2D animation.
  • ds2893
I think that actual quality of the animation looks great. However, it seems that the movie itself is lacking the magic of the disney classics. It seems incredibly cliched. Disney is trying way to hard to be "hip" at the expense of the story quality and character development.
Also, I am furious that they chose Randy Newman over Alan Menken as the composer. Newman's songs are fine for the quirky pixar buddy comedies (like toy story and monsters inc)- but I doubt he is going to be successful in composing music for a romantic princess story. Menken has consistently delivered beautiful scores and songs that have proven timeless. I think that the music is ultimately what is going to make or break this film and therefore determine the future of 2-d animation (would aladdin really have been as memorable if not for "a whole new world?"). Let's hope that Newman has some surprises up his sleeve.
