Alicia Keys as Agent 355 in Y: The Last Man?

Producer JC Spink tells UGO that he would like Alicia Keys to play Agent 355 in DJ Caruso’s big screen adaptation of Y: The Last Man. I can definitely see the resemblance, but I would prefer someone with more acting experience in the role.

Discuss: Who would you cast as Agent 355 in the big screen movie?

  • Matt
I thought she did alright in Smokin' Aces.
  • Heftybag
I think it would be cool to have some relatively unknown actress in this role because the character in the comic rely's on a false name and tries to hide who she really is, so a mystery actress would allow for that mystery around the agent would still be there. Plus, I dont think alicia keys would kick enough butt to do this film. I think a more muscular actress should be used.
  • Christopher Edwards
She was play in Smokin Aces, But agent 355 would be too complicated for her to portrail in this film.

I can't at this moment think anyone who could play that characther but I think that an experinced actress is needed for this role.
  • Christopher Edwards
Alicia Keysnwould be perfect for the role as the women who eye the dead bodies in the garbage truck, small role but she would fit it.
  • Steelo
355 is a beefy role. Honestly the woman that she acted with in Smokin' Aces would be a better choice but the casting might be off. I'd have to see how she does in Brian Benjamin.
  • Travis Mcgee
This is my favorite comic of all time, and honestly, I don't want it to be made into a movie. It would ruin it.

The best director for the job would of course be Zack Snyder; after watching 300 and seeing the trailer for Watchmen, I have to say that would keep true to the source material... Zack Snyder also did a wonderful job on the Dawn of the Dead remake...
I liked the idea of Topher Grace as Yorrick Brown better than Shia LaBeouf.

I hope this film will be rated R too. The comic can be extremely violent and has nudity with sexual situations. Although disturbing, it would be great to show women cutting of one of their breasts to become part of the Amazons.

If they do this film correctly, it can gross over $250 million domestically ($500 million worldwide)... If it is rushed and has a PG-13 or a soft R to appease the studio and teenagers, then it will be lucky to gross over $100 million domestically ($200 million worldwide).
  • she's not too bad. just needs more experience. in the bedroom.
  • Shad
The first acress I thought of for the rol of 355 when I first heard about this movie being made was Tracie Thoms, who you might remember from Deathproof. I think she would be a perfect fit.
  • KET
wow i think you really hit the nail on the head with this one. she was who i was imagining without even realizing it.
  • Superman
Blechhhh, she can't act and her voice is too husky.
  • aka
Dania Ramirez is the right choice.
  • Chuckles
10 to one odds that they offer it to Mrs. Will Smith, aka Jada Pinkett
  • Mel
She's a great actress, just see her in Smokin' Aces. All she needs is experience and this movie would give her that.
  • Zachary Swiderski
Wow. These casting rumors for Y:The Last man are making me sad. First Shia the drunk and now Alicia Keys! God this movie will be horrible.
  • I would like to see Jada Pinkett Smith, but she's too old to pair with Shia.
  • McGruff
just finished the 10th book today and while there are a few weakish points in the series, it's definitely my favorite comic book series ever.

I like shia as an actor, but just dont see him as Yorick. Yorick needs to be witty and light hearted, not to mention taller and a bit older than shia. say what you will about him, but Ive always loved Ryan Reynolds as an actor, and I think hes got just the right amount of natural sarcasm to pull of a yorick.
Oh and get Joss Whedon to direct.
And I know she's not totally black, but how about Rosario Dawson for 355
  • Chris
    Whoopi Goldberg. OOoooooo yeah.
  • Captain Awesome
If it's not rappers, it's lame R&B singers.
  • ddy_blue
Alicia keys did great in smoking aces but i dont think this role is the right one for her...its very complicated but she is talented is given the right instructions it could work but i also think an unknown actress would do it too.....

i'm standing on the middle of a bridge right now

-this is gonna be a hard one to accept, no matter what the announcements are. the comic is really THAT good, and all i can ask is that they look at it the same way Zack Snyder looks at his adaptations.

-the news that they were 'changing the story', and seperating yorrick & ampersand, truly seems like a terrible idea - i really don't understand why they have to alter the story that is already there.

-355 is maybe to heavy of a role for keys, and it kinda gives the impression that they are going for 'flash' and not drama, which is what Y is all about. i'm dying to see this film, but each announcement gets me thinking "well...i guess that's ok", when i should be thinking 'yes!' on every beat.
  • Heftybag
@ Orange, if it is true that they are changing the story like that I might not go see it. If they alter the story and just try to make it a post apocalyptic epic, it will fail and I will refuse to see it.
  • yeah, the partner to Alicia Keys in Smokin Aces was way badass and awesome. She would be good casting choice (I dont know who the actress is, though)

Alicia did alright in smokin aces. but we really havent seen much of her acting abilities.
  • toho
Alicia Keys? C'mon that's absurd. Michelle Rodriguez would be so much more appropriate, and she's not black! Jada Pinkett Smith? Are you fucking kidding me? I'd rather see Robert Downey jr undergo a sex change AND a skin color change before any of these two were 355. Her character is so multi-faceted, it should be put in the hands of a serious character actor.

Zack Snyder would butcher the shit out of this book. 300 was bloody awful, and there's way too much over-cranked camera work in that trailer, although I have to see Watchmen regardless. Call it the Star Wars syndrome.

You want to give this film to someone unproven, give it to the guy who directed Brick. Or the guy who directed Six String Samurai. Not DJ Caruso. It's such a highly regarded and revered property, and it just finished. I cried during the run of this book...multiple times. Our passions are being strip-mined, and while there is good coming out if it, there's bound to be a lot of bad and mediocre, and as soon as the great ones turn out that way, the people should stand up and say no more. And if Watchmen turns out like V for Vendetta, it's not good enough. If it doesn't slay like Iron Man or Dark Knight, something went horribly wrong, and that was in deciding to make it in the first place.
  • Taharqa
Naw man, Dana Davis ( who star as Monica Dawson on Heroes) would be killer in this roll. She's the chick that mimics everybody's moves in Heroes.
  • Sour Bob
Freema Agyeman from Doctor Who could do it.
  • Travis Mcgee
I really don't want to see this turned into a movie...

I thought the WB was starting to wise up by letting Zack Snyder make a faithful adaptation (maybe 2)... After seeing Dark Knight, I was surprised that WB green lighted the script for Dark Knight, it's not usually the way they do buisness, but it was great that WB let Nolan make a dark blockbuster film NOT for kids or teens...

Please let Y: The Last man be a faithful film set over 3-4 films... Do not rush it or change the script...
  • Chadams
I certainly hope that whoever does Y:TLM does it how they want it. I'm sick of "faithful adaptations". Films like TDK often succeed gracefully where an all-too-direct page-to-screen approach is taken. If I want faithful adaptations, I'll stick to reading the stories. But if some wants to INTERPRET the material (read: not stray the hell away, but give it their own spin) then I'd prefer that over watching something that I've already read - it borders on pointless.
  • Scalez
what about the woman from Rent?
  • Mr. B
Naomie Harris. She was Selena in "28 Days Later" and the witch woman in PTOC. The Selena role in itself is enough of a qualifier to me.

Also how the hell are we supposed to believe Key's is a trained covert agent at her age. I have a hard time believing she's tolet trained

But it seems like they're hell bent on destroying the series. Someone take this away from Spink and Caruso before they ruin it anymore.
  • McGruff
Scalez- Rosario Dawson, I mentioned her above thinking she'd be good, and Mr. B- that's who I was trying to remember! I had her face in my mind but had no idea who she was. The age isn't a problem since 355 was an agent by the time she was 16, but Keys definitely doesnt do it for me. Dawson or Harris
  • Jerris Beutler's Day On
    Jada.
    Pinkett.
    Smith.
  • Captain Awesome
The problem with Michelle Rodriguez is that she looks like a pitbull.

A pitbull that began walking upright and started wearing dresses.
  • HC
How about Angela Bassett? She would kick ass in the role.
  • Jerris Beutler's Day On
Angela Bassett? maybe if this movie was being produced in 1996
  • bigmansmallmouth
Who would I like to see? Not her. No offense, she was fine in Smokin' Aces but yeah, somebody with more experience. Unfortunately, I have no realistic recommendation. Just not her.
  • Mr. B
Well considering Angela Basset's role in the POS film "Strange Days" was more than likely an inspiration for the look of 355 it's not a bad comparison. Just very infeasbile.
  • peter
this is a bad idea. no alicia keyes. someone older. someone much less attractive.
  • Goobity
Y:is this important? Sorry, guys. this film has no chance of any mass acceptance. Even hardcore comics fans don't seem that interested. Especially with 'news' of casting mediocre recording artists as lead actors...it doesn't bode well. Don't get your hopes up...
  • Rob
Wasn't a big fan of Y as a whole, but the premise of it is interesting, and there were some decent characters; should be a good film in there somewhere, away from the world where anything that's a comic is now viewed as a revenue stream. An independent project that just took the premise as a starting point could work. And didn't star pop singers.
  • Gina Torres, from Firefly.

    You're welcome.
  • April
Brandy is going to be PO'd.
  • DS
    GINA TORRES.
  • cellchild
    alicia looks fine to me
  • Steph F.
Just finished the series earlier on. Awesome stuff, I'm not usually a comics type of gal, but I loved Y.
I think Alicia would be fine. She just needs to bulk up a tad bit.
I actually have way more problems with Shia than I do with Alicia if she goes with the role.
  • wendy
Shia will work.. he has the sense of humor and the audience pull to get something like this greenlit in the first place.. the comic is too long and complex not to get changed.. otherwise it would be 5 films instead of the two or three they have planned. Luckily it sounds like Brian is working with them to rewrite solutions to time crunch problems.. like separating amperstand from Yorick as a plot point to get him from a to b.. and hey a real monkey vs CGI..go figure.

And whoever said Topher.. ah a studio will not allow Topher to carry a series or trilogy.. they want to make sure the star is bankable. Say what you will about Shia.. directors, producers and studios love him and the kid in just over a year was in movies that brought in a crap load of money...

And the DUI isn't official yet..still pending the BAC.. if he is under the limit the kid is innocent of the accident and the DUI charges are dropped.
  • Phoenix
i don't know if Shia would work or not...although i do like him and i could see him pulling off Yorick's sense of humor. Who would be your pick for Dr. Mann? Ive been tying to sort that out and can't think of anyone.
  • Scotty
That reminds me of that film Strange Days. Has almost the same kinda chemistry as Y.
  • Phoenix
i had thought about Jada too....but how about the prize fighter in "Million Dollar Baby"? ..although her name escapes me at the moment...i had also though about Angela Bassett as well briefly, but 355 is much younger than her.
  • Thera
I'm cool with Shia LaBeouf as Yorick, I would prefer Joeseph Gordon Levitt or a young Paul Rudd type, but I think Shia suits the role well enough for me to keep my mouth shut. as for 355, I love Naomie Harris for the role, she's ten years older than Shia but she can definitely pass for about 25 which I assume is 355's age at the beginning of the series, and she looks about the same age as Alicia Keys, so there's no reason she shouldn't qualify for thepart.
