At the Terminator Salvation Comic Con panel, McG effused about many of the film’s details. Here are some of the more interesting tidbits:

1. PG-13 Rating Rumors Debunked - At both the panel and the press conference, McG removed any doubts that he was under pressure to deliver a PG-13 rating for the film. Referring to the studio executives for this film, McG explained “I’ve been given their blessing to make the picture…and if it’s a rated R picture, then that’s that.” He elaborated that he’s not against the idea of a PG-13 rating, but that the ultimate rating will depend completely upon what the final vision for the film is.

2. 2018, and the Kyle Reese Backstory Explained - The film will take place in 2018, the first Terminator movie set exclusively post-Judgment Day. It will have aspects of war films, as the humans unite to battle Skynet (which will also be featured). A lot of attention will be given to the T-600s, less advanced versions of the T-800 (the terminator model that Arnold played in the first three films). Given the complex, interweaving, and conflicting timelines in the collective Terminator films and The Sarah Connor Chronicles, McG has opted not to adhere too strictly to the mythology established in these works, but has worked on maintaining the vision of the first films, Cameron’s in particular.

Furthermore, we’ll see how Kyle Reese developed as a young man. We will find out the genesis of some of Reese’s best lines, and also find out that “some of the best moves that Kyle Reese has learned, he’s learned from machines.”

3. Harvesters, Aerostats, and Hydrobots, Oh My! - According to McG, the film will feature the machines that were visible in quick, passing shots in previous Terminator films. In particular, McG suggested that the Harvesters will apparently play a prominent, Matrix-like role, gigantic machines that are “stomping through the future, harvesting people.”

4. Film Treatment Will Be Silver to the Extreme - The movie was filmed with color stock but will be treated with as much silver as a typical black and white film, about 3x as much as normal. This gives the film an ethereal quality that suggests something is visually “off.” McG explained that he took some inspiration for the film from Children of Men, and based on what I’ve seen so far (which is extremely limited), this sounds quite plausible.

5. The film will end on a cliffhanger - McG confirmed that the film will end on a cliffhanger at the Salvation press conference.

I think the Harvesters are way over the top.
  • Captain Awesome
    haha,

This stuff sounds more and more like damage control to me. I await the reviews.

    Cliffhanger:

    Arnold is invented.

I never counted on being excited about this but here I am, giddy as a schoolgirl.

Good thing, him telling all of the dumb people out there not to cry about the ending. I think my fave memory of witnessing someone encounter an unexpected movie cliffhanger ending was when I went to see LOTR: fellowship.

After the entire 3 hr movie, it just ended with Frodo and Sam walking off into the mountain. Apparently half the theater was uninformed of the fact that it was the first in a trilogy. It was like a madhouse, everyone started flipping out and cursing when the credits started rolling. It was awesome to see stupid people get upset because they're too stupid to know any better.

Back to this, yeah, nice of McG to get the word out to his target demographic of morons early. Heh
  • The silver bit sounds interesting.

Unexpected movie cliffhangers....back to the future. I knew all about it before I entered the theater. Some 5 year old came out and said something like "what a piece of crap! to be continued!!" I just remember that he sounded so hilarious, but when we got to that part of the movie, there was mass confusion/uproar.

I love how filmmakers try to rationalize the PG13 they are bending over for. Either there is going to be graphic violence, potty mouths, and boobs or there is not. In Mr. G's world, these things aren't filmmaking decisions at all. Riiiiiight.

Just say that you conceded to a PG13 and move on.

The dark knight change what you can do in PG-13 movies. They showed ways of pulling no punch's in PG-13 movie and have it hit like a rated R movie.

here's the panel. watch and judge yourself:

There's a huge difference between PG-13 and R. Can you imagine what a PG-13 Robocop (1987) would've been like? What about a PG-13 version of True Romance? Pretty much any of these comic book movies could be vastly improved if they were allowed to have an R rating. Remember folks, all three Terminator movies have had an R rating. If Terminator: Salvation is PG-13, it will suffer.

Is this the continuation of rise of the machines? I heard it isn't.....

    Go back to sleep.
  • I'm interested to see if they can pull of a Terminator movie without Arnold. I actually liked T3, but it was more because it was one of Arnold's last action movies. Still, I think that by moving away from one central character, they can expand on the whole Skynet/Judgement Day mythos and tell a really awesome story.

Yeah this is a continuation KeanY, they don't really have anywhere to go after T3 except the way their going. I think the denial of the events of T3 would be a joke since that's when the war began.......

    McG is such a hack.

Charlie's Angels and the TV pilot of Chuck he made were horrible. Back to music videos for him!
  • You've got the biggest star (and my personal favorite) in the world in Christian Bale. He'll make the movie a must-see plus he loves to reinvent franchises. Baleheads Unite!

You know, I want this film to be good in the worst way, but I have brain hurdles I can't get past at this point. Nolan writing is probably the best news I've heard regarding the potential. I hope they can overcome the weak links and do the story justice.

You Americans sound like you need more movie ratings. We've got M15 for Mature and MA18 for Mature Audiences and AV18 (Adult viewing) before you hit R18

PG to R, sounds like a big jump to me...
  • michael
Yeah but Australia's are screwed up. I got no idea what the difference between M and MA are, and I dont think AV is an offical rating...although Shawn of the Dead apparently was last night.

Very rare a movie is rated R in Australia anyway. Not even the Saw series have been rated R.

But yeah, a jump from PG to R is pretty stupid imo. Sticking one in the middle would allow so much more.
  • At least his vision is fairly reasonable (not that sarah connor bullshit all over again).

and seriously, children of men is a great film. take some time off an watch it, david :)
  • its more then I expected that is for sure. Pretty suprized by this one have to say. Great post

I think besides the endings to, Artificial Intelligence and Matrix 3,

The ending I remember ppl kinda freaking out over was Terminator 3.
I saw that film way before I ever started to pay attention to online info. I had no idea Judgement Day was in 5. Hours. That was the greatist thing about that film (IMO), that was ballsy!!!!
I couldn't believe ppl didnt like it. ???
The only problem I had was the way Terminator reset himself after the TX nano-screwed him. (Come on man that was one of the coolest chase scenes ever, in that movie!!)

At the end when Judgement day happened I was like holly shit, there's no going back now, Terminator Salvation owes everything to T3.
  • this new Terminator should be good, if nothing else because Christian Bale is in it... i wonder, will Arnold make an appearance?
  • steven
does anyone know of a new robo-cop comming out sooon and does anyone notice that the robocop theme song is the same theme song for the terminator movies check it out.
  • T-8500
you know although the last three terminators were rated ``R'' I didn't notice much blood or gore, only mature language.
