I’ve put out the word for further confirmation from our staff—against terrible odds of hangovers and lipstick shenanigans—but a rumor is quickly circulating that Lionsgate/Marvel has kicked director Lexi Alexander off Punisher: War Zone. The film, which opens this December, is finished filming but apparently HUGE creative differences arose over…final cut? There’s a lot of speculation going around. Over at AICN, Knowles says the film’s composer is off the project as well, and Lionsgate is now transplanting the score with shitty heavy metal—as we suffered through yesterday while watching the rather kickass and ultra violent footage from Comic-Con.

Apparently Alexander’s candid potty mouth is contractually wired shut for the time being. Producer Gale Anne Hurd even announced that Alexander was on her “honeymoon” yesterday at a CC panel. Hah! Worth noting: Punisher: War Zone is probably the last R-rated film for a Marvel character we’ll see for sometime. I know that many of our readers were and remain highly skeptical of this flick, but my take is that it looks like unapologetic fun, a nice option for a double feature with Rambo or Commando. It’s also welcome—too welcome for 2008—to hear a female director speak her mind and take on the action genre. Oh, well. More as it develops….

A shame. Alexander seemed to have the right attitude for the Punisher.
  • Tendrillar
    And she's really hot.
  • Matt
    very cute
I have no other opinion besides my hornyness.

Well, that really sucks. I honestly didn't like the trailer for The Punisher but I must admit that she did a damn good job representing women in a mans game.

Also... how can you kick a director off a movie that has already been filmed? Isn't it a bit late by that point to be having second thoughts? Silly men...

    @ Hunter

How dare you compare this dreck with Rambo/Commando!

Punisher: War Zone shouldn't even be allowed in the same genre as these movies, much less the same sentence.
  • Isn't it ironic that female directors are responsible for some of the most violent movies out there? We've got Lexi here with Punisher 2, Mary Harron with American Psycho...
  • Ryan
I dont know - I think that we already have Lexis vision - maybe they had some serious differences, but I think it is still worth giving a shot. It sucks shes not there anymore but Im still psyched from that footage from the con - punisher is looking seriously dangerous. im still on board.

She didn't seem to know anything about the first teaser which was awesomely bad, which means the studio at the point was making decisions about what the public was seeing.

From what I've seen of the new trailer, I'm a little relived to know she didn't make any decisions on this one as well. They've both been crap with the styles being all over the place.

The footage makes me thing that there's a decent movie in there, somewhere, it just needs some good editing. Who's editing the final cut? Does Lexi have any say on the final cut?

If the studio has been solely responsible for what I've seen so far, they need to hand the project back to her.
  • gah
If she had final say on the matter, I might check it out. But according to AICN, the studio interference with there rap/metal soundtrack? No, sorry. You won't be getting my money.
  • Albert Brodsky
    studio at "that"

    "relieved" not relived

    @ Superman

So if I made a racist joke and put a "LOL" at the end, would that make it allright? Seriously though, if you're going to be a misogynist pig, at least be clever and original about it.
  • orange cinema
    jigsaw looks absolutely laughable.
  • YoungZe
I have a feeling that she is the right person for the job but some assholes are trying to ruin it. I hope the best for her, and the new Punisher movie.
  • mag
so shes responsible for pun spinning upside down!ahahaha please DIE.
  • Travis Mcgee
It's a shame that Lionsgate/Marvel are kicking off Alexander from Punisher, but Sony/Marvel and Fox/Marvel didn't boot Mark Steven Johnson off of Ghost Rider or Daredevil...

From the clip I saw the other day, that music was TERRIBLE!!!

Lionsgate/Marvel should take note from WB and let the director go while filming (i.e. Superman and Superman II with Richard Donner)...
The franchise would have been even better if WB would have keep Donner and let him finish both films...
  • Reason
    I blame the Dark Knight.

    *cough*LOL*cough*

I just checked her blog, and the text has been replaced by the "Hear no, see no, speak no evil" monkeys. I'd sure like to hear her response.

Lexi IS on her honeymoon!!!! For all the idiots out there trying to say she is off hiding somewhere i hope you are satisfied now!
  • Fdog
Okay folks... forget the trailers. Go to IGN.com and see the actual comic-con footage. Yeah it has some crappy heavy metal to it that makes it look like a B-movie... but wow does the gore show in this one!

  • britmys
Lionsgate, bring back Lexi and bring back the music and the composer she picked for the project. Let her do a director's cut and see if you don't have a winner on your hands. Otherwise, you are ruining a potentially good film.
  • Rich
It's funny to see all the fanboys talk smack. Lexi Alexander was the worlds mixed marital arts champion. She was hired by Chuck Norris for his stunt team. She knows how to make fighting look real and brutal but instead we'll get some hollywood douche who's never been in a fight re-edit the movie into a head exploding Michael Bay catastrophe.

And Michael Bay wanna-be, Gale Anne Hurd, should go back to looking over her ex-husbands shoulders for ideas and get out of the way of a real woman that knows how to kick ass.

what do you mean, she got married?
