The first two acts of Joss Whedon’s 36-minute three-part SCi-Fi internet musical Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog has hit the interwebs. Shouldn’t a sing-a-long have the words on screen with that annoying bouncing ball? But seriously, is the semantics of the title is my only complaint, then you know it’s good. Act 3 goes online on July 19th. Watch both part one and two below.
“With my freeze ray, I will stop the pain.”
Neil Patrick Harris stars as the title character, a low-rent supervillain who’s trying to impress the cute girl from the laundromat he’s too shy to talk to (Felicia Day of Buffy the Vampire Slayer), defeat his nemesis, superhero Captain Hammer (played by Firefly’s Nathan Fillion) and gain entry into the Evil League of Evil. Whedon penned the musical with his brothers (Zack and Jed Whedon) during the writers’ strike earlier this year. Whedon explains why he made the film:
“It wouldn’t hurt if this really was an event. Good for the business, good for the community – communitIES: Hollywood, internet, artists around the world, comic-book fans, musical fans (and even the rather vocal community of people who hate both but will still dig on this). Proving we can turn Dr Horrible into a viable economic proposition as well as an awesome goof will only inspire more people to lay themselves out in the same way. It’s time for the dissemination of the artistic process. Create more for less. You are the ones that can make that happen.”
I’m not a fan of traditional musicals, but I think everyone can get behind the occasional wacky and wonderful oddity that is Dr. Horrible. The official website is being overloaded at the moment, and at least from my hotel internet connection, it was almost impossible to watch. There is an alternative… The videos are also available for purchase over on iTunes for $1.99. So if you’re a big Joss fan, you might just want to do that.

So the chick from The Guild can sing eh? Definitely some funny parts. I’ll get my Tivo set up. On a side note, who eats frozen yogurt with a spork?

Fantabulous! I was hoping it be at minimum ‘ok’ but it went far above. It’s not quite ‘Once More With Feeling’ but overall I’m loving it.

Dude, I know the havent done the biggest things in awhile but NPH and Nathon Fillion are rocking the shit in this. Two of my favorite underrated actors of all time. They are both amazingly funny and deserve to be front and center in a new hollywood revolution. Well done Joss, well done.

If you can’t see it at first, don’t get discouraged! It’s all running pretty smoothly now. Really good show, I only wish there were more!

I hope this becomes an ongoing series.

Its funny but isn’t NPH gay? It seems like everything he does has to show how not gay he is….
July 17th, 2008 at 10:06 am
@ Charles D: So what if NPH is gay? What does being a gay man have to do with being a good actor?
Many famous actors were gay, whether openly or in the closet. It has nothing to do with their acting abilities.
(and for the record, YES, he is openly gay and has a boyfriend. More power to him, I say!)

If you’re looking for more good webseries, ‘Cataclysmo and the Time Boys’ is in its second season. Dr. Horrible actually has a lot of similarities, they are both hero-action comedy/dramas, and they both feature crazy evil mad scientists.
You can find it on youtube or at http://www.webserials.com, and if you like Dr. Horrible, you might like Cataclysmo.

Very funny. Didn’t think I’d like it but I was surprisingly happy.
Favorite part is the guy not pouring soup in the background of the homeless shelter
