Rob Cohen Producing a Remake of Monster Squad?!

The bad news is that Hollywood has decided to rape your childhood once again. Rob Cohen revealed to Bloody Disgusting that he will be producing a remake of classic 1987 movie Monster Squad for Paramount. If there is anyone out there remotely excited by the idea of a Monster Squad remake, let me remind you that Cohen has directed some of the worst films of recent years: xXx, Stealth, The Skulls, and from I’ve heard, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

The good news is that Cohen has no plans to direct the remake. Little known fact, Rob Cohen produced The Wiz, the African American adaptation of The Wizard of Oz starring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. Sidenote: that was a horrible horrible film. I wouldn’t trust anything with his name attached to it now-a-days.

Co-written by Shane Black, and directed by Fred Dekker, Monster Squad followed a group of young teenagers who must stop Dracula and his classic monster minions (who were re-imagined by a team of special effects artists including Stan Winston) from taking over the world. The film has become a cult classic to the ‘80’s generation. Lionsgate released a two-disc 20th anniversary Monster Squad special edition DVD in October 2007.

Fair enough, but let's also not forget that Cohen also directed Dragonheart, which was a fantastic movie.

    Wolfman has nards >:(
  • Hendo
oh dear god no!!!!!!!!!!! I normally don't mind the remakes but this movie has to stay off limits!
  • Hunter Stephenson
    Goddamn it.

    Fuck this.

If they try to remake Shane Black's The Last Boy Scout, I will blow up Rob Cohen's family. That is an oath.

    STOP THE FUCKING REMAKES.

If they remake Soylent Green, it won't be people, it will be movies.
  • Hunter Stephenson
Why the fuck is Hollywood trying to give every 20something a new psychological disorder by making them relive the past with shitty remakes?

We have enuff going on already. I'd rather another war break out than deal with this shit over and over.

Die Hard, Stand By Me and A Clockwork Orange are within their grasp.....
  • kPong
    Wolfman's got nards?!
  • A Better Class of Criminal
Actually, the idea of a remake is not bad... in fact if done right it could be cool.
But Rob Cohen... no, just absolutely not.

Now Del Toro... yeah, that's plausable.
  • O
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • REAL6
    DOUBLE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Come on man!!!!!!!!!!

WHY FUCKING FIX SOMETHING THAT DONT NEED TO BE FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Zach D.
What an asshole making a remake of this film. It won't be the same with all those fucking Jack-offs at the MPAA. that movie would have been rated R forsure if it was a shot for shot remake.
  • Kip
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, leave my childhood alone!! No Goonies, No Monster Squad, No Explorers! Stop it Hollywood! Stop it! Your being bad! That's a bad Hollywood!
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ Zach D

When I used to work at an indie video store, I would play MS non-stop when it was raining b/c it was rated PG-13 but bordered R. (rebel, rebel, I know) Motherfucking parents would complain and complain.

    War stories!

Well, it was better than stealing from the register. Today, MS would probably be R.
  • First off Dragonheart is not in fact a good movie. Try watching it again.

I think everyone is forgetting how this movie will be marketed and how the MPAA has neutered the industry. Never again will we see a Goonies or a Monster Squad where they lay out f-bombs and other great curse words that kids say.

Instead expect something more akin to Cheaper By the Dozen or The Little Vampire, or dare I say Van Helsing.
  • Captain Awesome
And yet you assholes keep funding this crap >:(
  • Jeff
And once again, baby Jesus is crying.

Next up, Little Monsters. If they remake Goonies, I swear to Christ I'm boycotting.
  • Rob
I am against most remakes, but when did Monster Squad become a classic?
  • david sotelo
cam'on it can not be worse than the new dragonball z movie

    .......can it ???????
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ Captain Awesome

I refuse to write about this remake from here on. Some remakes deserve no press, this is one.

    @ Rob

    Get a clue.
  • Mark
This was a great fun film of the eighties and they just don't make them like they used to, today everything is too protected and they will it water it down.

Why can't these studio's remake some of these movies of the last 20 or 30 years that sucked but had a great idea, story and/or mythology? There are plenty out there.

MS shouldn't be remade, the movie was fine the first time.
  • Gabe
Come on goddam it. Stop remaking good classic movies and just leave it alone.Hollywood needs to come up with fresh ideas.I mean i'm a huge nerd and all but shit man!
  • JFK
I will do everything in my power to make sure no one sees this remake. I will go nuclear.
  • I just bought the MS dvd last month. Awesome movie! :)
  • Baron Von Cheddar
I gotta agree with Mark. Don't pillage the classics, go scavenger on the crap. Michael Mann turned his own TV movie Crimewave (aka LA Takedown) into Heat. I think very few people would say that was a bad decision.

Some filmmakers have sidestepped the remake of a classic by basing it on the original novel such as "The Last Man On Earth/Omega Man/ I Am Legend" or "Manhunter/ Red Dragon"

Remaking classics like Casablanca or Citizen Kane are completely unforgivable. But cult classics like Logan's Run or Monster Squad don't carry the same weight in everyone's mind. How does a filmmaker determine what's ripe pickings for a remake?
  • Joe
Hm, seems I'll have to actually rent this movie and see what all the fuss is about. I've actually never heard of this movie.
  • REAL6
See i never got this remake bullshit. If you want the new generation to experience these movies we grew up on, just FUCKING RE-RELEASE IT AGAIN for like a month in the theatres!!!!

WHAT THE FUCK IS UP MAN???
  • Rob
    Hunter Stephenson,

Why do I need to get a clue? It clearly wasn't a classic because it was a box office smash. It didn't even make $4 million at the box office. It definitely wasn't a critical success (It has a 53% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes). It doesn't even have a lot of high general public ratings. On Box Office Mojo, it got a B- user grade. On IMDB, users gave it a 6.9 star rating. Only on Amazon did it get great user reviews with 5 stars.

I guess I am a little old for the Monster Squad since I was already in high school when it came out, but I don't see anyone putting this movie in other classic kids movies.
  • I don't get the remake thing. Is it just that the people footing the bills in Hollywood think they can make a quick buck due to the association with the original film? Or is it that the writers just aren't coming up with anything original and good? It's sickening, really.

If you're going to remake movies, why not remake movies that weren't received well but have good bones? There are a million movies/books/stories out there with great potential that either weren't marketed correctly, were poorly done or are just unknown to your target audiences. I thought directors were supposed to have vision!!
  • JJ
    Wolfman's got nards!!
  • deathmetalhero
xXx was a great movie. fuck this site and anyone who says other wise. seriously, sam jackson says 'this is the part where I put a gun to your head and ask you to do what I want. but your not the type of guy thats afraid of death." thats fucking character development assholes. Vin Desil saying 'i live for this shit' and then getting thrown out of a plane? shitty? no no no my freinds. I mean the guy can fucking somehow jump a motorcycle 30 feet in the air, shoot his ak, and kick a dude with gold teeth in the face. How is that a bad movie? oh is it because its fucking retarded? yeah well you may have a point there.

Anyway, Monster squad was a staple in my house whilst growing up. If wolfman's nards arent discussed in a remake, if little kids arent smoking and questioning eachothers sexual oreintations, if there isnt a scary german guy, if... well I still don't see why this needs to be remade. Couldnt they just update everyone's clothing using CGI, maybe give Shawn on of those stupid emo swoop haircuts to make him more hip and then release it?

    xXx rules, fuck you.
  • Ed
I saw Fred Dekker intro/Q&A a screening of Monster Squad, and he's grateful, but ultimately bittersweet towards its current cult popularity ("where were you people 20 years ago?"). After Monster Squad's box office failure, he had difficulty finding work, and his next big project, Robocop 3, killed his career.

So, if Dekker is in any way involved with this remake, I'm all for it because it would literally save his career (actually, I'd be for it either way - the "remakes raped my childhood" argument is getting tedious). And he did mention at that Q&A he had a project in the pipeline (I think for Paramount), so maybe?

If not, and the remake is a hit, he'll probably explode. Literally. Poor guy.
  • Rob
    Vlad,

Doesn't what you describe as a good movie to remake describe Monster Squad? It was a box office and critical failure when it was released in 1987. It has become a cult hit since I guess.
  • cinemaniac1979
Anyone who thinks that Rob Cohen is a good director or that Dragonheart was all it could be should talk to the screenwriter, Chuck Pogue. The man has nothing but bilious venom for Cohen for raping and massacring what would have been his swan song.

Cohen should only be allowed near movies that are so bad even Brett Ratner won't touch them.
  • Jerry crack corn and I don't c
Michael jackson and Ross were in "The Whiz", not the Wizard of Oz. Um two different movies.
  • Jerry crack corn and I don't c
    Quick edit, Peter. Touche ;)
  • Bob
    1. Monster Squad = HELL NO
    2. Where did you hear about The Mummy 3 reviews?
  • Wes_YDKSmovies
No, absolutely not. This is unforgivable if it happens.
  • Jaxin
    Nooo! Leave it alone!

It'd be worse than kicking Wolfman in the nads!!
  • Eric L. Hoffman
I think I am going to be ill! Another example of someone with no imagination trying to remake a film that was pretty good already, and thinking that his vision is better.

I don't know what Cohen was thinking...or obviously not thinking...but this is something that fills me with horror. Horror for the memory of the original which I still enjoy watching.

I agree with Jaxin...it'd be worse than kicking Wolfman in the nards.

In fact, considering how recent 'epic horror' films like VAN HELSING and the MUMMY movies came out (yes, I an one of those who can't stand them and what they did to the classic creatures), I already have a horrible vision of what this one will be if it is allowed to come to pass. What made it work, the combination of the classic nightmares, the touch of innocence and the exciting sequences will be hyped up to appeal to today's audiences that seem to want razzle-dazzle special effects of action sequences in stead of plot and, in many cases, good acting.

I could go on...and probably would if I didn't tell myself WHOA!!!... but I think I've made my feelings clear. Cohen will go on with this project, even if does read whatever negative response comes up.

Those are my thoughts on the subject. Thanks for the use of the crypt.

This is so exciting! I really could use a remake of Monster Squad.. I never was able to figure out the whole "alucarD" thing the first time. Plus, I thought it was very creative to have a creepy old guy that somehow knew how to deal with monsters. Also their Dracula was very originally portrayed by an excellent actor. The fact that it was nothing like a Goonies ripoff was just icing on the cake.. 10 stars!

Do you think that in the new version they'll kick the Wolfman in the? oh nevermind..

Wait, I got it.. All kidding aside. If the new monster squad were all very gay--that would be an excellent movie!

Wow, thanks for reading this. I feel like I am making friends.
