Dark Knight Cast and Crew Tease Third Batman Film

I don’t think I’m spoiling anything by telling you that The Dark Knight ends with the promise of more. A semi-cliffhanger. They have certainly upped the ante for a third film, the question is… will they make one? Director Christopher Nolan has made it clear in numerous interviews that he’s not thinking about another sequel. Rumor has it that Nolan wants to tackle something else next (possibly The Prisoner?). We had the chance to talk to Nolan and the cast, and here is what we learned.

“I knew what I wanted to do with the end of the film before we wrote the story. I wanted the film to feel very complete, which isn’t the same as having a feeling of finality in the ending,” said Nolan. “There was a particular emotion from the ending, and a particular thing we were after in terms of expressing something about Batman, and bringing the entire story back to him. So that it becomes once again, Batman’s film at the very end. He dealt with a very wide number of characters, interacting in all kinds of extraordinary ways. At the end of the day we just wanted to nail the relevance of hero, our core character.”

Since the ending was there from the conception, I asked Nolan if he had a plan for a third film.

“I don’t know what I’d do next, or what would happen next,” Nolan responded. “I felt in doing a sequel that it would be a big mistake to try to hold anything back for future films. You have to put everything you can into this movie and try and make it as great as it can be.”

Christian Bale wants more but admits that it’s all up to Chris.

“I always like to have to think when I’m leaving the theater. I do love any movie that leaves me questioning what has happened, what is going to happen,” said Bale. “I see that in finishing the movie I want to know what will happen, what is going to happen. But it is completely in the hands of Chris, weather he decides to do that or not. It will be a lot of money that he didn’t give you any indication if that was going to happen or not? But it’s completely his decision.” Later adding: “I can’t imagine doing this without Chris. I don’t even want to consider that because he’s created this. This is his.”

But he’s certainly up for the challenge.

“I think there is a great challenge to it for two reasons: one is that there have been a number of sequels that have surpassed the first movie. You know, you look at Godfather 2, Empire Strikes Back… There have not been many where the third in a trilogy has managed to be the best. And I see that as a good enough reason to want to tackle it. There is also another challenge that Heath has done such a superb job with this, then how do you create a superior villain?”

Bale brings up an interesting question. What villain or villains could they possibly tackle in a third film? For the answer we went to the screenwriters, David Goyer and Jonah Nolan.

“We’re not gonna tell you… other than to say that Batman has been published for 70 years. In the first movie we use Ra’s Al Ghul and The Scarecrow, who had not been in the movies before, and had not been in the sixties TV show before. And there are dozens if not hundreds of other characters that fit that bill. Everyone says its gotta be The Penguin or Catwoman… well I completely disagree.”

So while the screenwriters won’t admit they have talked about another sequel, I think it’s obvious they have thought about the possibilities. Jonah says that with The Dark Knight the idea from the beginning was just to make a complete film. Goyer insists: “Both Movies still feel complete. I think if there was not a third one, it’s not like ‘Oh my God, these things haven’t been answered.’”

So will the Dark Knight return again?

“I think Warner Bros would like to do another one,” Goyer admitted. “But it wasn’t until three or four months after Batman Begins had opened that Chris and I sat down and talked about another one. It was a scary proposition trying to do Dark Knight, and it’s sort of a geometrically scary proposition to try to do another one.”

The Dark Knight hits theaters on July 18th 2008.

Discuss: What Batman Villains would you like to see in the next movie?

  • gman
Bale makes a good point when he says that the best movies in trilogies are not usually the third movie.
  • Isaac
I hope they go for a third, but not for another few years, let Nolan do something else in between (a la The Prestige). And as for villains I agree that Catwoman, the Penguin, and Riddler are probably at the top of peoples' minds but there are some quality villains out there that would be better. If Scarface were done right (multiple-personality psychotic ventriloquist) and also Bane and Mr. Freeze (despite what was done with them in Batman and Robin) are great characters. I don't know how to make Freeze fit in Nolan's world, but just watch Heart of Ice from TAS and you'll see the potential.
  • emily
I agree with Isaac, let Nolan have some time to breathe then he can do a third movie.
You don't talk about doing a trilogy and then not make a third. That's just rude.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
I really hope they do a third one... but I agree with Isaac, they should wait a while.
I think The Riddler and The Penguin are my top choices for the next villian... but I'll trust Nolan with that decision.

    @ Peter

I heard in one review of TDK that when the IMAX scenes change over to the regular scenes it's really noticeable and annoying... is that true?
  • @ ABCOC

Peter said in the filmcast that it is noticeable but not annoying at all and doesn't take anything away from the movie, if anything it adds to it.
  • A Better Class: I was worried about that going in, and was surprised at how not annoying it was.
  • Identitytheft
I'm happy that they did not withhold anything from this movie to save for a sequel, as many other franchises have done (with poor results).

As much as I want to see more Batman, what villains could they actually pull off in this new "realistic" universe? Clayface and Mr. Freeze are automatically out of the equation, for example. I personally think Scarface and the Mad Hatter are cool characters, but nobody else seems to agree...

    @ Isaac

I agree that Bane has the potential to be a good adversary, but I also think it would get complicated depending on how closely they interpret the story between Batman and Bane. If they allowed Batman to be defeated by Bane like in the comics when he breaks his back paralyzing him, would they then introduce Azrael as the interim Batman?
  • If The prisoner is next on his plate.. I vote fuck batman.
  • Isaac
    @Floppy
I think that you trust the Nolans to do what they've done so far. Taking great concepts from the comic books and adapting them to fit with their vision and world. So you make Bane the great villain that he was in Knightfall and possibly have him injure Batman, but probably do something different with the Azrael situation. It might be interesting to see how Gotham adjusts to a time without Batman for a while? All I know is that I trust Nolan completely.
  • maremagnum
Whay do you think of using Hush in the third movie?
  • Mega
I don't think Catwoman necessarily NEEDS to be in there, but it would be nice to see Selina Kyle as a love interest.

As for villains, I vote Calendar Man, Killer Croc, and Riddler. Let's get some detective work in there!

    Oh, and Man-Bat!!
  • Ivan
Hush could work, but i like to see how nolan changes the history of the mad hatter, maybe solomon grundy
  • Agony
If Nolan wants to do another one, I trust him no matter which characters he picks (several people made some good points in the Robin talkback). I think any character could be re-envisioned for this universe, even the stranger ones like Clayface and Killer Croc. They might not be what we'd expect from the comics, but I bet Nolan could pull any of them off. Personally, I'd like to see someone that hasn't already appeared as a major villain from the other films, which would be yet another way for Nolan to set his films apart from the rest.

Identitytheft, I agree about Mad Hatter (though I'm not familiar with Scarface); have you read Morrison's Arkham Asylum? The Mad Hatter in that was a severly creepy pederast. I'm not sure that would fly though, and I don't know how he could hold up a whole movie.

I especially DON'T want to see the Riddler though. Just not my preference, especially after what I suspect will be Heath's fantastic Joker.
  • Floppy
    @ Isaac

I didn't mean I didn't think they could pull it off, just that there would have to be some liberties taken with the storyline. Something along the lines of just seriously injuring Batman like you said instead of turning him into a paraplegic. I just think that Azrael's storyline is just way too complex to be explained in half a movie or less.

Zsasz has some potential, even Batman said he was one of his deadliest foes.
  • I am so glad that somebody besides me on God's green earth is thinking how great of a villain Zsasz would make. He is the only one that would come close to rivaling the Joker in terms of pure insanity and the ability to inspire fear, and he even appeared in the first film (albeit for a few seconds).

Other characters that would make good villains are Black Mask, Deadshot, Deathstroke, and/or Phantasm/Reaper.
  • Jack
"But it is completely in the hands of Chris, weather he decides to do that or not."

    weather should be whether
  • Harry
    Cluemaster or Deadshot
  • Raerth
    @ Floppy

Zsasz was in Batman Begins remember, could still be at large after Arkham went down. Not sure after this 'henchman' introduction they would re-invent him as a main character.. :(

  • Dan
While looking around IMDb, I noticed that Chris and Jonah's uncle, John Nolan, was in one episode of The Prisoner in 1968. Coincidence?

Would anyone be interested if they create a new villain for the third Batman movie? I'd be curious to see what the Nolans would come up with. They could enter a new character into the Batman lore, like Harley Quinn.
  • Vin
As a lover of the Batman comics and Batman Begins, I have to make it clear that I cannot see Killer Croc in a live action Batman movie. Obviously they wouldn't use him as he isn't very realistic (plus the chances of The Lizard being used in one of the Spiderman movies), but I just wanted to throw that out there.

Without having a clear idea of Two-Face's part in TDK, I would love to see him again. I just love the character and know that Goyer and the Brothers Nolan would be able to translate him well.

That being said, I do feel like if they could somehow work Harley Quinn in as a minor villain then I would be tremendously enthused. I love her as a character and she would be a great follow up to what Heath Ledger created. If handled correctly, Bane could be very interesting and would actually be able to fit inside of the world they have created.
  • orange cinema
i was pulling so hard for harley quinn & joker in the 3rd. but now i'm thinking if they do the riddler with a story about identity, and film it in a confusing manner - ala momento/prestige - we will have a trilogy that mirrors the different incarnations of batman in the comics: each film is connected but noticeably different in style, just like batman has many different titles/styles in the comics. (dark knight, legends, caped, shadow etc)

like most here, whatever chris and jonah nolan decide to do, i'm 100% behind em'. oh and the prisoner is going to be a brilliant mind fuck!
  • BBJ
If he wants to continue with the mob themes, he can easily bring in Black Mask and do a take on War Games. Obviously drop the rest of the superheroes, but the basic premise would work to keep with the realism that Nolan wants to have.
  • Tommy Bahamma
I would like to see Two-Face return (if possible), along with The Riddler (in a Scarcrow type of part), and Black Mask (who would have a part like Falcone). I would add Selina Kyle as a love interest, and if Rachel survives, have a love triangle around Bruce.
  • Melvin
Harley Quinn, Bane or Catwoman(as 2th villain) and mb deadshot...
  • Jason Miller
I'd like to see the Riddler be more of a Hanibel Lecter character. When we first see him, he is already in prison/Arkaham. His ability to solve a mystery rivals that of Batman, therefore his ability to create the mystery/riddle is epic.

The question then is does Batman always need to be fighting villains in the movies who want to destroy the ENTIRE CITY!!!! It always seems like the villains want to kill everyone.

Serial killers can put terror in the hearts of everyone, just by picking off people one by one. Jack the Ripper, Zodiac, D.C. Snipers.

The issue becomes trust. Is the Riddler someone causing the kills, is he controlling the person who is killing. Why does the Riddler know what will come next.

I suppose it's a bit similar to the role Calendar Man played in Long Halloween.

Would love to see Johnny Depp play the Riddler, in a role like this.
You could do Black Mask (ties in nice with the crime drama feel of the new films) where you find it's a group of false faces.
  • Mayor West
I'd like to see something along the lines of the "Last Arkham" storyline. A Batman left emotionally unstable by the events of "The Dark Knight" is locked up in Arkham with the likes of Zsasz and the Scarecrow.
  • Melvin
Who is Zsasz? can some1 explain? Is he from the comic books?
  • jproductions
I'm for the Riddler. He's always been my favorite Batman villain next to the Joker. The viral campaign would be even more amazing with the Riddler, puzzles all over the place! (yes I know viral is just a bonus, but I'm just saying)
  • Kyle
I'd like to see Superman as the next villain. We all know the only one that can kill Superman is Batman.

    The epic showdown.
  • Garko
    I vote for Mxyzptlk!!!!!!!
(i know he is Superman, but what the hell, Marvel is doing crossovers...so can DC. BRING ON MXYZPTLK!!!!
  • The third in a trilogy is usually not good, true.

But in the case of Lord of the rings, it was the BEST. I want Batman 3 to be RETURN OF THE KING. If anyone can pull it off, its this crew. Goyer, Nolan, Bale, etc have taken us this far. I'll buy into any movie they make until I die.
  • andrew
i would like to see either the riddler, clayface, poison ivy, or deadshot
  • Mike
I agree with Jason on The Riddler. It would be pretty cool to have someone like Johnny Depp play the Riddler, and he would play his role very much like Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs.

Bane would also be a good villain, and still not having seen The Dark Knight, I'd like to see Harvey Dent in a third movie, battling with his two sides, both helping Batman and getting in his way.
  • Jason
after watching gotham knight i would love to see deadshot come to a live action film
  • Aaron
Will the third deal with redemption? It seems like that's quite often the case.

I have always figured the day would come when Bruce would realize if he spent as much time and energy becoming a better Bruce Wayne he would have done a greater good. Maybe it could end with him stepping into his fathers shoes.

However audiences would hate that. Plus Batman is a tragedy his existence causes even more chaos as we'll see in TDK.

Considering the Riddler character was inspired by the Joker would it be neat if the character in the film was inspired by the Joker as well? Like a sideways copycat of sorts.

Also if Edward is the villian and we still have Two Face it would be fun watching the next film back to back with Forever.

Choice title for the third: GOTHAM
  • Floppy
    @ Raerth

Yeah after Ra's Al Ghul's men open up Arkham you see him but that seemed more along the lines of a easter egg for the fans to me. They might not have that hard of a time introducing him in the third movie since the majority of viewers probably have no idea that Zsasz was in Batman Begins and therefore would be new to them.
  • Aaron
The Riddler could well be a welcome contrast to the chaotic punk look of the Joker, an OCD straight man.

Whatever happens as long as Nolan is back the films are safe.
  • I would like to see Killer Croc
Killer Croc is the best.... Killer Croc!! Killer Croc!!!!
  • I VOTE PREDATOR!!!!

    ....

    ....That was a joke.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
I agree with Aaron, GOTHAM would be a kick-ass title for the thrid one.
The Riddler and Two-Face would make a nice contrast.
But I think the Penguin should be thrown in there somewhere. Have him as a background badguy... running a competing corporation to Wayne Enterprises, selling weapons to the mob illegaly, joining forces with crooked politicians, etc...
You could have a story of redemption for the City itself, but I would personally like to see Batman going down in a blaze of glory in order to save it. And only after his death does Gotham finally rise out of the corruption.
Sure it would pretty much screw the idea of having a fourth installment, but if Nolan isn't directing anyways... who cares.

    Just my opinion.
  • Gary
I think along with " TWO FACE" they should have "THE SENSEI" seeking vengence against Batman for his killing of RA'S AL-GHUL.also i think DR. MOON and MERLIN would be good.
  • Alex
I like the idea of having the 3rd movie deal with redemption. I would also love to see Seline Kyle and/or Catwoman given the Nolan treatment. The end of the movie could have Batman 'retiring' to achieve redemption... then have a fourth movie at some point which adapts "The Dark Knight Returns."
  • Al
i think Clayface and Killer Croc should be the 2 distraction villains for Batman in the 3rd film while the Riddler should be the main villan. It'll be more of a challenge to Batman. But he could manipulate Clayface and Kiler Croc into fighting each other then go after the Riddler.
  • THANK YOU, FOR OFFERING SUCH A GREAT QUESTION. ROBIN WILLIAMS AS THE PENGUIN. EVIL,MORBID PENGUIN HELL BENT ON BRINGING BATMAN DOWN. CGI HEATH LEDGER JOKER AS OVERLORD OF THE VILLAINS. • clever name
i say deadshot or shadow thief.

im also open to Nolan making a new villain. He obviously knows exactly what works within his batman universe. I trust Nolan 100%. He won't let us and himself down
  • Ethan
I think that the penguin should be in the next film and should be played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman... He is an excellent actor and can pull off a crazy job as the penguin like ledger did for joker.... Just look at what he did for capote how he changed is his whole speech and everything hes that good of an actor to pull off this role... i would love to see the riddler johnny depp would be amazing bc he is just nuts idk who else could play him.
  • poop
i vote jim carey and arnold schwarzenegger as the villains
  • Matt
Johnny Depp as The Riddler (i've thought he'd be brilliant in this part since I saw how Nolan did Batman Begins).

Helena Bohnam Carter as Harley Quinn (think of her in Harry Potter)

Phillip Seymour Hoffman could pull off the Penguin.

As far as catwoman...maybe Amy Adams if she could show a darker side, she's got a cattiness about her and she can obviously act.

How bout Dwayne Johnson as Mr. Freeze? he'd be like a less ridiculous version of Ahhhnold.

A third movie in this series would obviously have to feature Eckhart as Two Face (they'd be wasting a great actor in great part if they didn't).

If they're gonna bring Robin in at any time...how about Emile Hirsch?
  • Matt
Hush could be a SICK storyline! Especially if they got a Bale-equivalent actor to play him (Jake Gyllenhall? Matt Damon?).

They could really make it epic if they include the storyline with Hush and Two-Face. Hush fixed two-face's face so he became Harvey Dent again, then Dent (on the good side of the law again) eventually saved Batman from Hush by shooting him and throwin him off a bridge.
