WOW. Fandango is reporting that dozens of showtimes for The Dark Knight are already sold out for the midnight screenings on Thursday night/Friday morning, July 17th. That’s right, even with a full three weeks before the film hits, screenings have begun to sell out. A few theaters have begun to add 3:00am showtimes on Friday morning to help meet the consumer demand.

Update: As of June 27, “Dark Knight” has sold eight times as many tickets on MovieTickets.com as “Spider-Man 3″ at the same point in the sales cycle — 21 days from the film’s official release. “Spider-Man 3″ is the No. 10 film on MovieTickets.com’s Top-10 Performing Films of All-Time.

i might even see the additional 3 am show, because for me, nearly every time i see a nolan film, when its over i want to see it again immediately. specifically momento & the prestige (prestige is my fav of his, but thats changing in a few weeks)

and yes, nolan has said there is a third and final idea that he'd direct, but he said no more after that. he made that statement a while ago, and now i'm wondering if the joker was involved in their idea - if so, what now?
  • TheDaftPunk
    Have mine. Can't wait.
  • Neil
got mine, yelling at my group to get theirs so theres not only a couple of us...slackers...
  • charles
If the film is good, opening weekend could match Spider-man 3.
  • D1
It doesn't need to be good (imo, it will be fan-fucking-tastic) to match Spider-Man 3...SM3 was horrible and it did well on that ground.
  • Captain Awesome
    OC,

At one point Nolan said the third film was going to be the trial of the Joker. But I assume Dent will take most of the real estate for the third film. And maybe another villian?

I would love for Nolan to close this beautifully as a tight trilogy. And so far it looks like i'm going to get it.
  • salthegeek
    nuts

  • charles
Well, Rolling Stone nearly gave the Dark Knight four stars. I hope that's a good sign, because I'm not buying my ticket until some reviews start to come in.

  • 4LOM
Anyone still think this won't break 100 mil first weekend ???
  • Liz
Amazing! Though I can't exactly say I'm "surprised." I don't think anyone expected S3 to be any good after those Emo-Spidey posters came out.
  • Chris
I checked online at my local IMAX and the tickets were out so I drove out there thinking there'd be different supplies on location as opposed to online - unfortunately, I was wrong. The other theater in town has all digital screens, so I bought tickets there for the midnight show. I guess I'll have to see the movie in all its glory in IMAX another day. Sucks.
  • Greyson
The Dark Knight is to Spider-Man 3 as NSync is to the Backstreet Boys
  • dvq
    @Greyson

    you lost me.
  • gah
    @ Jerry
Did you really need to secure your Hellboy II tickets early?? How much is Universal paying you?
  • Erica
If there's anyone in the Seattle area looking to see The Dark Knight on IMAX, the Pacific Science will be playing the movie all day on the 18th, starting at midnight, with another show every 3 hours. The tickets actually went on sale June 18th, and i've received no notice of them being sold out yet.
  • dylan
i've got my tickets. midnight. IMAX. NYC. wild horses couldn't drag me away.
  • SUe
Sam Raimi is to David Blaine as Chris Nolan is to Jesus.
  • Indiefilm
I'm in the Seattle area and looking online the 12:01am IMAX showing is sold out and so is the 6pm and 9pm showing. They opened more showing for demand.

This is a shock to me. I never thought the Dark Knight would be this big. Its probably because I have a bleak outlook on big box-office sellers. I see too many films made for money and not for quality. I know. The last sentence isn't original ,but Its good to see some great pictures receiving success.

I'm happy for The Dark Knight. I'm happy for Chris Nolan. He's my favorite living contemporary filmmaker and I hope The Dark Knight opens more doors for him in his career. This is the film I've been waiting for since the closing credits of "Batman Begins".
  • Captain Awesome
    Completely agreed, Indiefilm.

    Also, lol @ SUe's comment :)
  • jbone123
Yeah this movie will be huge....my only concern is that for the third one w/b and dc dont mess it up like sm3(not w/b but it did suck) the old superman3 batman forever and of course batman and robin...Im hoping theyll take the bourne approtch and just keep with it but im thinking to far ahead everyone enjoy it even if your not a fan!!!!
  • Moviola
I didn't expect it to do this well either. I thought that because it is a dark niche film, that would reduce the box office a little. This is good news.

In regards to sequels, honestly I hope they stop while they are ahead. Most third parts are terrible. Part of this is because the studios let the directors have their way on the second film, then put more money into the third, but take control away from the directors. Everything I want in a Batman film appears to be in this one. If this is the definitive Batman movie I've been waiting for, leave me hungry, not disappointed.
  • Identitytheft
I DO NOT think this movie will break 100mil opening weekend. It may not even break 80.

Don't get me wrong, I WANT this movie to do well, but this is a dark film more suited to serious movie buffs and comic fans than your average summer audience.
  • IG-88
Judging from the pre-sales its tracking around 90 mil opening weekend.
  • Is there anyone who isn't excited for this movie? If you aren't, you completely suck balls.
  • BatFan
Anyone know if it is playing up in Northern NH at midnight? I really gotta see it.
  • Bif
    Hey BatFan

My parents camp up in Lancaster (NH) and the local theatre there has Dark Knight on the marquee already advertising the midnight show. Check out www.tbatheatres.com - there is info on their website. I hope to be up there that weekend too!

    CANT WAIT!!!!!
