Kung Fu Panda Sequel

Kung Fu Panda was the first non-Pixar computer animated film that I really enjoyed. When I saw the film a few months back, I said to one of my friends “This is gonna be huge, lets hope they don’t f**k it up by making a sequel.” Well guess what… A story crew has already begun early work on a Sequel, according to a posting on the TAG Blog. The original film has garnered great reviews across the board and made over $229.7 million worldwide in its first 19 days of release.

    That picture is hilarious.

And yes the film was really good. I especially loved the art direction and character designs. But I also fear the sequelitis with a film like this. They ran Shrek into the ground after they ran out of pop culture references. So...

Peter if you're ever at a book store anytime soon. I recommend checking out the KFP artbook. It's beautiful.
  • Well duh. Is anyone really that surprised?

A sequel is always a scary thought to me nowadays, but I'm going to reserve judgment for now. It could be good. Let's hope.
  • It was to be expected.

  • I think a sequel is expected given the success of the movie and the lack of original and new ideas in mainstream Hollywood. Why take a chance with something new when you can squeeze a few dollars more from something familiar. I think they had a great story, they told it really well and there is nothing left to say.

If they are looking to milk it, maybe instead of a sequel they should shoot for a Saturday morning cartoon and expanded toyline. At least that wouldn't taint the movie.

I would rather them not make another, but considering the story and the money made I don't blame them. Just don't rush it.
  • Eric
Most likely, I see a story line picking up the theme of "who are my real parents?" The answer will possibly lie in a kung-fu heritage that his parents wanted to protect him from, leading to battle of a darkness/foe outside the realm. Just a thought, but makes sense, since the story thread was loosely alluded to but not addressed in the movie.

    From animated-news.com:

    http://www.animated-news.com/2008/five-kung-fu-...

06/10/2008: "Five Kung Fu Panda sequels on the way?"

In news that will surprise noone, Jack Black told AAP while promoting Kung Fu Panda in Sydney earlier today that he was confident there would be a follow up: “My eight ball says signs point to yes.” Jack says he’d jump at the chance to be involved if “all the stars are aligned to make it. It’s easy for me, I just come in and do the acting voice, it’s those animators and directors that have to really make the sacrifice.” In much more surprising news however, Jeffrey Katzenberg stated that there could be up to FIVE more Kung Fu Panda movies if he gets his way. “There is a larger story here of which this is the first chapter. In the same way Shrek had five chapters from the beginning, this has six. Whether we get to tell those chapters or not isn’t something we determine, the movie-goers determine. It needs to be a big hit. It needs to be a blockbuster.” Which Kung Fu Panda is clearly on its way to become… Deservedly so since this timeless action comedy with heart marks a fresh departure for DreamWorks–so why spoil it, especially so early in its theatrical run, with the announcement of endless sequels? You may remember that Jeffrey Katzenberg stated four years ago that Shrek had been conceived from the beginning as a four-chapter story, later bumping up that number to five.

I loved this movie, I saw it twice. They better not mess it up, but it would be nice to see him working together with the other five.
    Please don't screw this up.

this is sad, such a great movie, going to be ruined by a barrage of sequels.Just like shrek, the first one was great the second was ok but the third was absolutely horrible.
  • hi
Think of it like chapters. I honestly think it will turn out better than expected. It's just a story that is unfolding. Kind of how LOTR is. It's not like anyone complained about THEIR sequals. I think we have just had a bad experiance with sequals that we don't want to give this one a chance. It DID leave you hanging a little, since we never saw Tai Lung actually die. What if he somehow escaped the blow? As long as they stay true to the original serious but funny thing, and don't just try to make it all funny, I think we're alright.
  • Chip
I haven't seen Kung Fu Panda (I'm going to wait and rent it), but it does look pretty good, and positive word of the mouth kind of makes me want to see it. I did see Wall-E in theaters, and that was great. I'm not expecting Panda to be as good as Wall-E, but they're different kinds of movies, anyway.

However, since Kung Fu Panda has been successful, a sequel is inevitable. I mean, this is Dreamworks we're talking about. Look at what they did to Shrek (to be honest, while I thought the second one was okay, I think they should have left it at the first one). The 2nd one (however good it is) will make a ton of cash and guarantee a third one, which will be horrible.

This is one of the reasons why I prefer Pixar to Dreamworks, other than the fact that their movies are better. Pixar doesn't depend on making sequels, and whenever they do, they make them right (Toy Story 2 was great). Pixar doesn't turn their most popular characters into sellouts (if they did, we'd already have a Finding Nemo 2, and a Finding Nemo 3-D). Pixar's purpose has always been to tell a great story with great characters.
  • Kung Fu Panda was beautifully choreographed and really well made. It's just a little lacking in depth as the way the characters are depicted are cliche and superficial. Take for example the typical Shifu and disciple story. It's pretty formulaic and exactly like Jackie Chan's 70s movies where a kungfu wannabe meets a martial arts expert. However I must applaud the producers for really making the martial arts stand out. It was a grand effort!

everyday my 2 year old son watches this movie, and everyday he pulls me down to watch it with him...it has been a month now of that daily show, and i never get tired of watching the movie even if just watching with my son....even if he's past asleep already i end up still watching the movie till it ends.... awesome!

never had any specific favorite movie...now i can write something...
  • drakkigirl
I agree, this is an excellent picture, and I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline as much as I did the attention to detail in the animation. I can honestly say that this is a movie I watch almost every day, not only for the beauty of the picture, but I enjoy looking for hidden meanings.

Kung fu panda 2: the dragon apprentice

awsome if po could get an apprentice, maybe a lion who could fall in love with tigress :)
  • brant
i think that this movie was way too short, it just leaves you wanting more, which is torture considering the next movie is in 2011. They should make this into a series, that way it will last longer and be more popular. I'm all for doing movies, but don't make us wait that long, we will all go nuts!
  • Harrison
thats exactly was i thinking the movie was kinda short making me want more of it : )
  • drakkigirl
yeah, it was pretty short, and making us wait so long for a sequel is torture, but you don't want to rush the producers, or we'll end up with something like Lilo and Stich--the first movie was pretty good, but the second wasn't all that great. you could tell they didn't spend enough time on the animation for it.
  • I reckon that the creators of Kung Fu Panda should make a number 2.
It should be called Kung Fu Panda 2: Revenge of the Fallen.
It's a very good film. I like the characters they have chosen.
Did You Know? Dustin Hoffman (Master Shifu) plays
Mr Magorium in Mr Magoriums Wonder Emporium?

I'd also like to say hi to Peter Pellegrini (You know how we went on
Thumb Wrestling Federation.....I printed off Tommy Thunder),
Jimmy Gordon, Max Tate, Sam Cantarella and Will.

  • drakkigirl
The problem with animated sequels is that they tend to rush through them and make the animation less beautiful and the storyline more cheezy. I think they should make a Kung Fu Panda sequel, but only if they can give the second movie as much care and thought as the first one. If you can't do it again, don't do it at all.
