The poster above showcasing actor Channing Tatum as Duke popped up at the Cinema EXPO in Amersterdam, according to Film1. This is the first time we’ve seen the full title, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, for the big budget nostalgia actioner opening Summer 2009. Did anyone see this clip of Joseph Gordon Levitt, who plays Cobra Commander, emptying his “awesome” quota for the year when asked about the flick? It’s pretty spazztastic. For a film based on a section of Toys “R” Us from the director of Van Helsing, the buzz is suprisingly uppity and the costumes have been slick…in a “wow, that loaded kid at the end of the hall dropped $3,000 on paintball gear and ammo” way.

Discuss: Like the subtitle? What is your belief system when deciding to see a movie based on toys?

  • Aqualeo
Why does every movie have to have a subtitle?
  • Christopher Marc
Anytime you have a movie based on a toy line you have to go in with low expectations, yet theses are meant to be popcorn movies nothing too subtle about that...As long as it's entertaining and doesn't go overboard with the bad one liners, it could be worth taking a chance on. Yet we can't really make judgments since no footage has been released yet. Posters and character images aren't enough to make solid critiques about a project. I know people are bad mouthing Sommers for Van Helsing and attribute Joe will be just as bad, thats a big assumption based on nothing.
  • igroveman
it upset me to no end that they aren't making this movie geared towards American patriotism. It sums up our times too well, and will taint it for me no matter what the outcome is.
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ Chris M

"that's a big assumption based on nothing."

In all fairness, that's a 'big assumption' based on Van Helsing and The Mummy films and movies based on toys.
  • gah
First off, why do you need a subtitle when it's the first in the series??? Secondly all movies based on toys and videogames suck.
  • Hey, Batman's got a gun and lost the cowl! Wait, this is GI Joe??
  • Joseph Gordon Levitt is playing Cobra Commander? Isn't he like too young for the role? And why is it none of the characters look much like the toyline?
  • orange cinema
i like it when these films are taken somewhat seiously, it is a fun part of my childhood, so the approach that Bay has taken seems perfect for me. and i gotta agree that Sommers name + the stuff we've seen so far gives us every reason to worry, which is a shame because i really like some of the casting.
  • Shogun Seth
This movie will not be good. The casting is really bad, the director is not good, and I guess I didn’t think they would have a sci-fi edge to it (I am not sure why I didn’t think they would do that). That being said I am sure I will have nothing better to do that weekend.

On a personal note...I dislike Bush, I think this whole country is bassakwords, I don’t think any politician from any viewpoint can fix some of the problems we have created for ourselves. It’s enough to make idyllic self to throw in the towel. BUT…God help me I still love seeing Captain America, the G.I. Joes, or any other flag wearing hero kicking the shit out of Nazis/Communist/Extremist/Gangsters/Thugs and so on…
  • 2/3 of any movies BO comes from International sales, so no way is this movie going to be about "American" patriotism, sorry but that's the reality. Also, the characters aren't looking like the old line of toys, so they can make a new line of toys. Don't think for a second that the studio hasn't thought this through all the way, this is a huge tentpole big-bucks movie and they are hedging all bets.

Programmed entertainment for the 4Quad masses... enjoy.

(4 Quad = Men and Women, Under 24 and over 24... in other words blando.)

Some of the cast I think is fine, but I haven't been too impressed
by any of the photos. I'm waiting for some footage before I write
the project off completely, but honestly, how high can one's
    expectations be?
  • Hunted.
Damn Hunter, do you stand up when you're not writing on here?

"Joseph Gordon Levitt is playing Cobra Commander? Isn’t he like too young for the role?"

    That.

    looks like wentworth miller

I predict double-disc deluxe edition dvd's of this movie in Wal-Mart's $2 movie bin of shame by next summer.
  • duca
I'm not sure why but the GI Joe movie just doesn't resonate with me. I see the posters and the charactor photos and I go 'meh'. Maybe it's because I'm Canadian and don't have the same patirotism towards it? Or is it because the movie itself so far just seems kinda bland? I have a feeling that when this movie comes out and I'm just not going to care either way.
  • Captain Awesome
Even in the posters, the suits look "cheap".

    Sci-Fi Channel film kids!
  • Jerry of the Hub City Butlers
There's an idea. I might actually pay to see Duke go heads up with Dino-croc as opposed to that bratty little kid from 10 things I Hate About You...
  • Rob
I agree that Joseph Gordon Levitt is too young for Cobra Commander, but Channing Tatum is also too young to play Duke. It quite clear that with the big budget ensemble piece action movies, they want to appeal to teenagers. Look what they almost did with the Justice League before they scrapped that. It was going to look like an episode of Smallville.

I don't know if the producers don't think teenage boys can relate with actors in their mid to late thirties or even forties (granted it hasn't hurt the box office of action movies like Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, etc.) or they want to extend these movie franchises over the next decade or two hoping to keep original stars.
  • Christopher Marc
    @Hunter

still bad directors have surprised us with good films in the past...couldn't hurt to hope a little..lol
  • the count
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a poor man's Shia LaBeouf.
  • JGL has got the acting chops. I don't know where he went after 3rd Rock to learn how to act, but he came back like gangbusters in Brick and The Lookout.
  • Albert Brodsky
So far this is really missing the mark on the "nostalgia factor" for a thirty year old guy who grew up on GIJoe in the afternoon.
I'll reserve my judgment until I see some previews. As far as JGL, I assume his face will be hidden behind a hood, so how does his age matter?
  • Beachhead73
Myabe they are going with younger actors becasue it is the "rise of Cobra" (the beggining) not the 25 years of gi joe cartoon, with the U.S.S. FLAGG and fifty tomahawks and sky strikers on deck...
They would have all been younger.. I have been a gi joe fan since I can remember I still have well over a million gi joe toys and have addicted my son to them.. for his generation it is more of the sigma six series, which if you are going to be a joe fan you have to accept, hence the sci fi look.. As a Batman fan since the same age I have endured clooney, kilmer and who ever else tormenting my dreams (looking back even the prince soundtrack to what was the best Batman till this latest one) in that series...
For Me A G.I. Joe movie is going to be a G.I. Joe move, which may be better than some of the battles I had in the backyard dirt with my own guys and I am going to f'n Love it & regardless it will end up in my dvd collection... Maybe for the Baroness alone...
    GO JOE!!
  • Jeeth John
    Beachhead73....great attitude bro...
even i was a big fan of G.I.Joe series....and now I am trying to collect all their animations...
yea the posters do look weird...the actual costumes were different...well lets wait n see....
    G.I.JOE!!!!!!!
