Four Talking Posters From The Spirit

When I first heard that Yahoo had talking posters from Frank Miller’s The Spirit, I thought to myself “Cool, this is the future of movie marketing”. I mean, eventually one-sheet displays will be replaced with flatscreen televisions which can easily switch in and out various movie posters. Say a screening of The Happening just gets out, the theater can load movie posters of films that people who went to see an M Night movie would also enjoy. As you leave The Dark Knight, posters from other comic book movies would light your path of exit. And this new technology would allow for animated and interactive posters.

So when I clicked over to Yahoo I was very disappointed to find four standard character posters. The talking gimmick is just a gimmick. You move your mouse over a poster and a sound clip from that character is played. Sure, it’s interaction, but pretty lamely executed. I was expecting for the characters to come to life. I was expecting their lips to move. Was I expecting too much? Check out the lameness for yourself on Yahoo. Or you could star at the four posters above and pretend they are saying the superimposed quotes. It’s probably just as good.

I actually saw a talking movie poster for STEPBROTHERS at my local mall. At first glance it's a typical vertical plasma screen display featuring the one-sheet for the movie. Then Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly begin to move and talk to you. Very cool and momentarily surreal. The future is here.

I agree with you Peter I think the marketing campaign for "The Spirit" is just overwhelmingly awful. First Lionsgate makes the blogs pull all the production stills which was the only interesting thing that has been released. Even the teaser trailer was horrible the theme was stolen from the "Untouchables" and didn't show any real movie footage. Also a bunch of comparisons to "Dick Tracy" with the poster and "I'm on my way" the line was directly used in the DT trailer. Considering the whole film is going to be in full color, why is all the promotional stuff all in black and white? I think it's the studio misleading audiences to think this will be a Sin City movie or something exactly like it. My whole problem with the marketing is that "Watchmen" was a bigger movie and finished production after Miller did. Yet "Watchmen" seems to come out will all these character/set images and these video journals which are amazing. Watchmen is going to be explained in mini video serials which explain the story and characters.I think they should have come out with some little video history on the comic because nobody knows who the Spirit is. Audiences my age are just going to be reminded of Dick Tracy, The Shadow and The Phantom...all pretty much bombed at the box office most likely nobody but older people knew who these characters were, which weren't their target audiences.

Also anyone else bored to death by those awful long winded blogs that Miller is posting??....I've given up on the idea that Sin City 2 & 3 are going to be made...Bring on Frank Miller's Ronin and Hard Boiled!!

better than nothing (although, the roomate assumed I was surfing porn when she heard the quotes). Can't win.

I still say these posters are really weak. Writing on the faces? I guess that's one way to solve a copy problem. Not working for me.
I agree that they are really slipping on the marketting of this. They better get something out of the bag that starts to distinguish this film.

I so completely agree with Christopher.

Well, i for one find that the posters are working. I mean, they're getting all of us to talk, aren't they? Even if you don't go see the movie - other people will just based on all of the chatter and the controversy surrounding this film.

On a personal note, I like the posters. I think they are beautiful and intriguing - as someone who has never read the comic, I would like to see how these women are a part of the adventure. Looking forward to it, overall.
