Jon Favreau

Since an Iron Man sequel was first announced, reports of a contract-less Jon Favreau keep popping up. Favs has been playing it cool, insisting that Marvel just has their hands full with Hulk. But now the director has finally voiced his concerns that the April 2010 release date might not be realistic. Favreau writes:

“It’s been five weeks since the one and only phone call my reps have gotten from Marvel. I know their hands are full with the Hulk and I’m sure they will get into it shortly, as they tell me they intend to. I ran into the Marvel guys at the Hulk premiere and everyone sounded eager to get to work on IM2.

I am concerned, however, about the announced release date of April 2010. Neither Robert nor I were consulted about this and we are both concerned about how realistic the date is in light of the fact that we have no script, story or even writers hired yet. This genre of movie is best when it is done thoughtfully and with plenty of preparation. It might be better to follow the BB/DK, X/X2 three year release pattern than to scramble for a date. It is difficult because there are no Marvel 09 releases and they need product, but I also think we owe it to the fans to have a great version of IM2 and, at this point, we would have less time to make it than the first one.”

I agree with Favreau 100%. The release date is completely unrealistic. Thor is scheduled to come out a couple months later and already has a script. If Favreau is speaking publicly about his concerns, then I’m thinking that something must be up.

Favreau doesn't want an X3/Spidey-2 debacle.

    That's what's up.
  • No kidding. They need to keep these paced out. Plenty of money to go around and no reason to rush them on top of each other.

Favreau & Downey need to stick together. If the studio goes ahead without them involved in the project, it will lose alot of credibility.

Im really starting to like Favreau.....

    He knows whats up!!!

    Is he skinny again?

LL - the director of the hulk just said he'd love to do another hulk - and then threw his hat in the ring for the avengers film as well. fav has done the same, as i'm sure the 'thor' & and 'cap amer' directors will also do.

NOW to me, it makes perfect sense for these guys to do their respective franchises as long as they want to, but for the avengers film itself - imo - i see 2 options:

Option 1) all the current franchise directors work together, co-directing, taking charge when their 'hero & villian' is the focus. working in harmony towards a superfun film....

the (many) problems with this are rather obvious, here's a few: personal ego's/too many cooks in the kitchen; how to handle villians, character, group scenes, scene crossovers; each director may (or may not ) want their 'guy' to shine the brightest; there could be a split among the final 'vision', etc, etc, etc.

Option 2) get an entirely new director, with a fresh 100% objective and unbaised eye for the STORY - the individual heroes are not as important as the overall tale to be told. imo james cameron could make this one of the finest films EVER (i know, i know - wishful thinking!) but seriously, a third party is the way to go.

i see no problems with this option. it makes the most sense. i really like the guys who are helming the franchises, but don't feel any are capable -YET - of successfully handling the story & character juggling required to make this the mega success IT NEEDS TO BE!

i'm not saying that as a fanboy - i'm dead serious that the avengers movie truly needs to be an awe-inspiring film, just as JLA does/did/whatever - thankgod its derailed for now, until they take a que from marvel and do it the right way. The most important idea comes from Fav himself:

"This genre of movie is best when it is done thoughtfully and with plenty of preparation. It might be better to follow the BB/DK, X/X2 three year release pattern than to scramble for a date."
  • I'd rather see one director for the Avenger's flick. Everyone directing would just be too many cooks in the kitchen, I think.

As for Favreau, he's quickly becoming one of my most respected names in Hollywood.
  • ANGRY BROOMSTICK!!!
Ew. wait, there's a movie about THOR???? Ewwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Steelo
ah hollywood...caught up in their own fantasy...

Does anyone else feel that using "reau" doesn't really work? I think you should go with the tried and true "favs" next time.

I think Jon is acting like an ass now.

He probably wants a much bigger paycheck and hence still hasn't signed up on the sequel.

I am fine if Marvel decides to change the director. Maybe get someone just as talented as him. The harry potter series have done it so why not this?
  • I think Favreau was a lot of the reason this movie was so successful and I'll be quite disappointed if he's not involved in IM2.
  • Warheart
Favreau is totally right. I hate it when I hear a studio announce a release date before the movie has even gotten started. This new way of making movies that Marvel has going is looking pretty messed up...apparently they've already pissed off Norton with their final cut of The Incredible Hulk...

    @ Jamie Jay

what do you mean by X3/Spidey 2 debacle? X3 was 3 years apart and was terrible while SM 2 was 2 years apart and was fantastic
  • Yourright!
I agree w/ Favreau...I don't mind waiting til 2010 if it means that Marvel will let the product have sufficient creative time. Rushing a movie for the studio to get paid is a bad idea.
  • SUe
Yeah, you really can't rush this thing if they wanna do it right. Too bad about the strike cuz they would've been further along now if it wasn't for that.

---Jojo is the audience that DareDevil, Ghost Rider, FF are written for...buy a clue and respect that Favreau wants to take his time and make a good film. We don't need to rush and ruin a franchise --I'm looking at you Matrix Reloaded / Revo, or just plain crap like Capt. America, Nick Fury: Agent of Shield to name a few.

Chris Columbus from the Harry Potter franchise didn't want to do another film by the way. Was it about money? It doesn't matter since in the case of IM2 Favreau wants to make it.

As for a bigger paycheck...more power to him since he is making quality product, it's not like we are picking up the tab.

really? why does the fate of this Avengers movie seem to be so important? A crossover movie. Big Deal. You guys (all over the internet, not just here) act like the this movie will save the world and all of cinema. C'mon, it's got the lamest heroes anyway: hulk, captain america, thor, and ironman. Maybe, i'll be proven wrong after the individual movies come out, but i can't help thinking that i will ever see an Avengers movie as being this monumentally important. AND its four years away. Sweet jesus i'm sick of hearing about it...And the same goes for this Justice League Movie, too.

    I can understand Marval's urgency.

Most people in the IM demographic have short attention spans (thank you PS3 and Xbox) so in 3 years most of the 14-22 y/o who saw the original will be saying "Ironman who?, that's so 2008" and the sequel will bomb.

That being said, you have to go with what the creative people say in this situation and not rush the process or it becomes one big craptacular movie.

"Favreau doesn’t want an X3/Spidey-2 debacle."

I assume you mean Spidey THREE? Two was the best of the trio.

And they do have to get Favs back for the sequel, he proved he knows how to do this thing right. They're definitely better off waiting another year than rushing it and ending up with something that isn't the best they can pull off.

is anyone even considering that this was a tactic to try and force Marvel's hand in getting the deals signed with JF and RDJ?

To me he is saying that if they do not move on this now then there will be no way to do it in the time frame they want ... I also see this as the first possible mistake of the new Marvel Studios. They have one hit and they are already (possibly) over-committing on timelines which will have the backlash effect of forcing movies into production before they are ready ...
  • Danatic
He's so money and and he doesn't even know it.
  • Chimaera
I think if given the choice he would choose to do the Avengers movie instead of IM2 and with the projected release dates so close together it would be impossible for him to do both and Marvel would push to keep him to do IM2 if they want him back. I think he's hoping that if the release dates are pushed back he might have a shot at working on both...imo I'd prefer that he do IM2 and leave the Avengers to a more experienced all-around director.
  • Solo500
Favreau's IM is the only one of these superhero films to embody the classic Marvel spirit and no other director seems to get this. The best case scenario is that he not only gets to direct IM2, but oversees all of the other Marvel films.

do you guys have any idea how queer it sounds when you say "Favs"?

    just wondering.

what about the spidey 1/spidey 2 format!

    Spidey 1-2002 Great film

Spidey 2 2004 The best of the trilogy.

Two year gap. It worked for spider-man!
