Jon Favreau on the Future of Iron Man

Jon Favreau and Iron ManDirector Jon Favreau has been leaving more hints that the Iron Man sequel will not follow the highly acclaimed Demon in a Bottle storyline, which involves Tony Stark battling alcoholism.

“The comic book fans might see ‘Demon in a Bottle’ as a fresh story line but I haven’t seen ‘Hancock’ yet. From what I’ve seen it seems there is a lot of imagery that seems to be shared. Him flying through billboards and things,” Favreau told Collider on the set of his new movie I Love You Man. “The idea of the hero whose biggest enemy is himself, and him fighting through his demons, you want to come at the audience with something fresh. You don’t want to feel like you are echoing something that somebody else is doing.”

I can understand the Hancock criticism, but I was pretty sure from the very beginning that Marvel would probably never allow the Demon in a Bottle storyline in a sequel to their hugely successful comic book film. It doesn’t make good business sense, even though it’s clearly the best story in the many years of Iron Man’s comic book history. But Favreau insists that “There are plenty of story lines to explore from the 40 years of history from that character.” And sure, there is Mandarin, who was set-up with the Ten Rings in the first film, but I’m not sure that villain is big enough to carry a sequel. Jon insists that “There is a lot that is very relevant about that character, in the pool of the landscape that we find ourselves in,” and I wouldn’t disagree.

Also, Favreau has said from the beginning that he would like to direct an Avengers movie. But now that Marvel has made the big announcement, he’s not sure its possible.

“I would love to. Clearly I have stated that ‘The Avengers’ would be fun. But I look at their release schedule and they have announced ‘Iron Man 2′ for 2010 and then ‘Avengers’ for 2011. I know from experience there is no way I could. I don’t know what they have in mind, but there is no way that ‘The Avengers’ could be done in a year. Either they are thinking about somebody else doing it or they have something up their sleeve that I don’t know,” said Favreau, later adding: “Hopefully we end up going for a sequel that is going to be bigger and better than the first one. That’s not always the case with sequels. Sometimes you end up trying to do just rush, and hit a release date. Hopefully this sequel will be driven by the material and driven by good ideas.”

We can only hope. But when you start making business decisions over creative decisions (No alcoholism in our highly profitable superhero film), it usually leads to second rate results. You can read the full interview with Favreau over on Collider.

i think extremis would be a real sweet demon in a bottle type of storyline. I just feel like the best bet for villain in the sequel would be mandarin. m.o.d.o.k. would be cool and interesting to see.

    oh yeah and justin hammer.

I like where Favreau's Head is at!!!

    We shall see...
  • When i interviewed Favs last year it seemed to me although he likes the story he's known from the beginning it would be a tricky sell to Marvel.

I Think Favreau should make the daredevil sequel !!!
  • Vic: Yeah, I've been on two roundtables with Fav and he always seemed to be interested in tackling that storyline. He certainly never sounded this down about the idea. I think he realizes that with Iron Man being the huge overnight success that it was, that it might be impossible to do Demon, even though its clearly the best Iron Man story.
  • OH BLAIR
I have high hopes for Hancock only because of Jason Bateman.

Iron Man should stay an uplifting comedy movie for now, it was a good original superhero movie, and maybe one of the best movies so far this year, that and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

At least he's smart about all of this

I really really liked both the Movie and the character Iron Man and while Demon in the Bottle is a classic story I don't think it's what the public (not comic fans) would want. I think people liked Iron Man because it was such a fun movie that wasn't too serious and I sorta feel doing a really serious storyline like that without taking away the tone you've created will result in something like Spider-Man 3. And to agree with the previous guy, Extremis would be an awesome idea for a sequel.

I like where Favreau’s Head is at too!!!

    @ All

Personally, I think some of the Demon in a Bottle storyline will pop up in the sequel. After The Dark Knight slays this summer, and possibly overtakes Iron Man's gross, it will be hard for Marvel to argue that darker storylines aren't mainstream.

The one thing I haven't seen anyone ask Fav is how he'd incorporate DIAB into the light-on-the-feet comedic tone of the first film. Also, I don't think Fav sounded too jaded about doing it - he seems more concerned with Marvel rushing this baby into production, not to mention Avengers and Thor.

Hancock will bomb. He has nothing to worry about with that film in terms of the DIAB storyarch.

But knowing Marvel's track record of trying to Disney-fy all their franchises to make them as marketable as possible is the one issue that will ulltimately come down to how the sequel turns out. The problem is when Marvel finally does get a "good" thing, they end up ruining it. So I hope for the most part Fav has enough power to tug it from them without them turning it into a Spider-Man shitfest.

i think we need someone else to do The Avengers. nothing against Fav, i just think it's such a broad range of storytelling, and the amount of character and story juggling that would be involved is too epic for the untested Fav. james cameron could do this in his sleep, and would be my first choice. but sadly i think that's just wishful thinking.

@ anyone who thinks Hancock will bomb: You're an idiot. Will Smith is box office gold. He pulls people in to see crap like Pursuit of Happyness and Hitch. He'll pull this off too. Plus you've got Peter Berg who is solid as can be.

@ Favs: Could Iron Man 3 BE The Avengers. You could shoot them simultaneously. IM2 could end with Iron Man losing ala Empire Strikes Back and The Avengers is his way of coming out on top in the end.

I really think Jarvis should be a hologram in the sequel.

Actually Paul Bettany would be a rad Vision too.

I'm sure that "Demon in a Bottle" storyline is probably a compelling one and I'll probably enjoy HANCOCK as well, but you need a bad guy!

Haven't we learnt anything from the first HULK film? It's obvious that Marvel has so at least that's something...
