Witchblade Movie Poster Revealed

The big screen adaptation of Top Cow’s Witchblade begins production in September 2008, and Platinum Studios and Arclight Films have launched an official teaser website at Witchblade2009.com, and released an official teaser movie poster. I’m not sure what to think about this as I’ve never read the comic book series.

Witchblade Movie Poster

Witchblade Comic BookThe original Top Cow comic book series has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide since it was created in 1995. It also spawned a TNT television series which ran for two seasons beginning in 2000, and a Japanese Anime television show in Japan in 2006. The story follows a specially chosen female who comes into possession of “a supernatural, sentient artifact with immense destructive and protective powers” called the Witchblade. The jewel-encrusted gauntlet gives the wearer extraordinary powers. The feature length theatrical live-action film will take a “more horror-based approach.”

“It’s not a gore-fest, but certainly more horrific than the TV series. With the supernatural elements this is pretty easy to do,” Executive Producers Matt Hawkins told Newsarama. “The live action film will be more in line with the comics than anything else.” … “One of the great things about the Witchblade is that the basic mythology and origin allows us to do pretty much just about anything we want.”

IMDb lists Battlestar Galactica producer/director Michael Rymer attached to the project, although I haven’t seen his involvement confirmed officially. The plan right now is to release the film in late 2009.

    Peter,

Like most titles under Top Cow, it's a shitty comic. The selling point is that it's a naked chick whose "naughty bits" are covered by spiney "Gigeresque" armor when someone says bad words or something.

The armor is probably a genius metaphor for an STD.

Lemme guess - we're going to get Milla Jovovich.
  • Milla would work
  • Frank
The girl in the image, especially her hair and eyes, remind me of Rachel Luttrell from Stargate: Atlantis.
I never read the comic, but I suppose she fits the character somewhat.
  • FullMetal Patch
Frank, I was just thinking the exact same thing! That would be awesome, I'd love to see her in this role.
  • yawn... only a top cow movie would release a poster with a girl on it BEFORE the girl was cast! LOL!

    WACK!!!
  • duca
Well at least it's not possible for it suck as bad as the TV series, right?
  • Siri
I quite enjoyed the TV-series. But seeing how the poster relies heavily on the T&A-ness of the comics, I think i'll just skip this one.

"yawn… only a top cow movie would release a poster with a girl on it BEFORE the girl was cast! LOL!"

Wow, that is LOL bad. Nicely said. I hope they put that up in the movie theatre so that I can have this conversation with my 9-year-old daughter..

"Daddy, why is that girl naked?"

"Because she's a marketing whore, sweetie."

"So what's the W stand for"

    "Whore."

    "I thought whore started with a "H"."

"That's a good guess pumpkin, but the "W" is actually silent"

Like Peter, I too have never read the comic, but I have heard of the character and the comic, but somehow the permise of hot chick with revealing outfit never caught on with me, weird. but if I had to pick, I would say Summer Glau or Megan Fox.
  • Aaron
Wow... this poster is sad. Cast first please.
  • Aaron
Someone must create a naked Hellboy poster.
  • Jackson
    I'd witch her blade.
  • YoungZe
    Anyone really want this?
  • danno
I recoiled in terror when Captain Awesome mentioned "Gingeresque armor." Then I read it correctly.
  • They did the same for the Conan movie.

Another set for 2009 movie that will only be idle and probably won't ever see the light of day...

    LOL @ 'let me guess...'

"The armor is probably a genius metaphor for an STD.

    rofl @Captain Awesome
  • Chimaera
The fact that they say they are taking a more horror based approach on this interests me but the marketing approach knocks it back to a big whatever.
  • jim janes
    lol, it has asscrack!
  • iamsad
wow, i don't think top cow should have put this poster out as i have read many bad things just on this forum about it. but i have to say i actually read the comic and its very good. despite what you people say about a women getting naked all the time, its not like that. the stories are very good. the witchblade is like symbiote, if you will. maybe you people should check into things more before you start criticizing what they are. the girl in the pic is computer generated please who know who they will cast. oh and by the way i'm a girl who reads this comic.
  • if there is a Witchblade movie to be made, Rhona Mitra is the one! I believe Rhona Mitra from "Underworld and Doomsday" would be perfect!!!!!
  • I believe Rhona Mitra from "Underworld and Doomsday"should play the role in Witchblade!
  • D man
I concur to the highest power on your feelings! I enjoyed the playstaion network release of the 2006 anime series! i just wish it would have ended with melanie living :(
  • Aaron
All I have to say to you is that when oyu cn finally think up a comic that's amazing and sells as much witchblade, tell me. But before you do so, don't go around saying that it's a "shitty" coimc.
  • AaronL.
Finally, someone who knows what thier talking about. I totally agree with what you are saying. Please read before you dis the comic. Poeple now a days should really digg in deeper before they make stupid comments that don't make any sence.
  • MICHAEL
Agreed again. Witchblade is a great fantasy/horror/cop drama mix and has less to do with tits and arse than the teaser would have you believe. The story is rich and the characters have flaws, ups and downs. If you ever read it you would know but most people here are so quick to judge they miss out on a great characters because they think it's the tipicle T&A comic book when it really truley is not. I would compare the amount of skin in Buffy to that of WB.
  • Unsanesarah
Does the nudity in the poster indicate that they will be protraying the character (while in the armor) otherwise nude? The covers of many of the comics seem to show partial armor (like arms only) but otherwise nude. Think there's any hope it'll be done that way? I know they are going for an R rating, so I don't see why they couldn't tread a little new ground and try having her naked while fighting or armored...

As far as I've read, the Witchblade comic is good reading but they left me confused on a majority of the important parts. That and the good characters are the ones who don't get enough credit, in my opinion. I, personally, don't really like Sara Pezzini, so whoever they pick for that role I'm most likely going to ignore her. Plus, I think the movie would be better if they fused the American and Japanese series of the Witchblade. I favor the Witchblade anime's concept of the "Neogene sisters" and think if they used characters already in the American comic, it would be different though still attached to the comic, which is the effect they want anyway.
