Back to the Future Sequel Rumors Squashed

Doc Brown

Not that anyone was expecting the answer to change, but Back to the Future co-writer and producer Bob Gale has again put sequel/remake rumors to rest.

“Let me answer one question before anyone asks it, which is, ‘Is there ever be a Back To The Future Part IV…No,” Gale told the crowd of the 5th Annual Celebration Exotic Car Festival. “We’ve all seen sometimes where they make one too many sequels and you say, ‘Maybe they shouldn’t have done that.’ I’m not going to name any names of movies, but you know what they are!”

As a huge fan of the Back to the Future franchise, I respect the stance everyone involved with the films are taking in terms of sequels. The series works remarkably well as a trilogy, and having a fourth film could only feel like a tacked on post it note. That said, I’m eager for a new generation to discover the Back to the Future films. I’ve noticed that less and less of the new generation has even heard of Back to the future, never-mind watched the trilogy. And with the closure of Back to the Future - The Ride at Universal Studios, I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.

It would be great if they could find a way to remake the movies for a new generation without it feeling like a sub par copy of the originals. But that’s probably not possible. Maybe a theatrical re-release might be another option. With digital cinema expanding in the numbers that it has been (primarily due to the popularity of 3D), I’m surprised that studios aren’t doing more big screen re-releases, as the costs would be minimal. Or perhaps they could give Back to the Future the post production 3D treatment that has been discussed for the Star Wars films. That might be the best way to reach the new generation.

HELL YEAH they'd be great in IMAX 3-D!

    How awesome would that be!?!
  • Jay
great scott, a blu ray release!
  • Was he talking about Indiana Jones? :D
  • Larry Leonardo
Well thats to bad, I thought they'd cure Parkinson's disease and Michael j. Fox would miraculously recover and be like, oh shit, I should make a back to the future IV because that's the only thing important to me in my life and not curing this stupid disease.

Just wait 20 years and they will re-make this movie anyway.

i know integrity in films nowadays can seem wishy-washy, but i just couldn't support any kind of new bttf without micheal j fox - especially not a sequel. it doesn't seem right.
  • orange cinema
and as i hit 'submit comment', i realized i fully support superman returns and all their future endeavors, even w/o reeves...but i think that's different, right?
  • The day children do not seek BTTF is the day the world dies :(

    @ Allynd

Now I know why, when I looked out the window, the world is falling apart. *clutches head in despair*

I'm disappointed that studios don't do more re-releases either. They used to do them much more often!
  • ruben
    that would be cool
i love bttf trio mostly because i go to hillvalley high school, they filmed 1 and 2 at my school

There's absolutely NO reason to remake these movies. They are absolutely perfect in every way.

What; are they going to "remake" them in 2015 and travel back to 1985 and then to the future in 2035 or something? Uh, no.

But Blu-ray and IMAX 3-D would be awesomeness!
  • "It would be great if they could find a way to remake the movies for a new generation without it feeling like a sub par copy of the originals."

Ew, dude, do you work for Michael Bay the hack or something? Um, no more shitty remakes or sequels, ok? I'm glad with the original 80s franchise the way it is, thanks.

Didnt I ask this question at the filmcast?
  • This is unfortunate. I think he is being selfish.
  • Sadly, Peter is right; a lot of younger people today have no clue what BTTF is. In-fact, I met a lot of people in their early 20's over the last several weeks that never even heard of Indiana Jones until KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL starting its heavy marketing campaign. I think not just BTTF (or Indy for matter), but for all film in general; they've somehow slipped through the cracks of Generation Y; they're just not interested in watching anything older than they are, which is really sad. So many great movies they're missing out on.

As for the theatrical re-release, I somehow doubt Universal would ever consider it. There were rumors coming out of Uni before the E.T. 20th Anniversary theatrical release, that if it did well at the box office, BTTF may have had a chance as well. But when E.T.'s numbers were less than stellar, the plug was pulled not only on BTTF, but I would think most re-releases from every major studio in Hollywood.

Why don't studios re-release stuff theatrically anymore like they used to? Remember how many times RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, E.T. and STAR WARS got reissues back in the 1980's. Is it that after the 1997 STAR WARS Special Editions, that if a re-release can't make that kind of money, they're not worth the time and effort to put back into theaters? Or is it just that audiences today won't pay to see a movie theatrically that they can already own on DVD?

they defiantly do re-release movies in theaters but it usually for one day now

anyway I am 19 and am a huge BTTF fan and consider it either one of (if not) the best trilogy but I do not wish for a sequel.

I don't think these movies can be touched since I love them and they should stay in 1985 aea

if they remade BTTF it would not necessarily bring it to a new generation it may do what many other remakes have done to classic films and make people think of that shitty version instead.

not to say there aren't any good remakes but still.

oh and btw I liked Indy 4 >:)

Go Bob Gale! The Indiana Jones series ended terribly so good thing Back to the Future won't.

And good old Robert Zemeckis will probably make Back to the Future in 3-D no matter what. He seems to have a weirdness in motion capture technology. I think he'll hop on the hollywood trend.

By the time Star Wars is released in 3-D, George Lucas will find a few more "mistakes' he can fix with digital technology to make Star Wars closer to his vision...more than 2004s DVD release. Oh boy, was that a dirty surprise when I watched them for the first time.

what if they were to make a badass new BTTF video game? they're doing the same thing with ghostbusters? It could be insanely cool if done well...
  • Eliza
“We’ve all seen sometimes where they make one too many sequels and you say, ‘Maybe they shouldn’t have done that.’"

I really like that Bob Gale actually understands this. I feel like you could stick George Lucas in a room with a thousand people all chanting it, and he'd still make Star Wars 3.5: The Return of the Revenging Clone Blahblahblah.
  • Mikey M
A remake of BTTF? No thanks.
  • Dan Berry
I'd totally go see re-releases, especially Pulp Fiction.
  • Techno
a remake of bttf i dont want to see, my son is 7 and he also loves the movies. he has also remote control cars the you can still buy from ebay... But what i would love to see is a hole lot of new movies made called "return to the future" my son is always asking me are they going to make another bttf movie yet. i always tell him maybe one day. i dont know.. but some kids of reseon they could start the movie with digital editing like they did with solo in starwars and start a new generation of movies leaving doc to come back for the new marty in a new generation car to help "a new doc " find his children and make right the future because maybe doc kids have advanced doc's time travel!!!! stab in the dark, but never change the origal bttf its perfect as it is... 21.7.08
