Will the original squad be back, or will Sony recruit new talent? A week ago we reported on the rumor that Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 will be filmed back-to-back, Back to the Future styles. Today, a quote from Marvel’s Vice Chairman, Peter Cuneo, hit the Net via IESB regarding Sony’s stirring plans for a third sequel…
“As far as Spider-man 4, it’s really up to Sony, it’s up to them, most likely scenario is 2010 or 2011 but we can’t speak for them and I think, that we don’t know. They have given us their re-up payment for that film so you know they’re going to make it within a reasonable time frame. Sony may be looking at some issues with the cast and so on, I think they have to make some decisions.”
Maybe it’s me, but all of these recent quotes from Marvel honchos have a newfound tone of “We’re kicking ass and taking names, and, of course, we have outside properties as well. No big deal.” So, screenwriter James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) has apparently turned in a script for Spidey 4 that inherently ties to a fifth film; if this is how the franchise plays out, I’d imagine (rather predictably, yes) that an unprecedented bag of cash the size of a Dubai island would need to be exchanged to bring back Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. And if I had to place a blind bet, I’d say a new A-list director (and, if so, probably a new star) is in store to bring Peter Parker into the next decade. Dunst is the cigarettes to the keys and wallet, here. What does your Magic 8ball tell you?

I’m pretty sure this franchise has found the trail that the original Batman series went down. After suffering through Spider-man 3 I’ll be happy to watch this ship sink.

Spiderman 3 kind of ruined this series for me. When they do bring it back, I hope they go through a lot of changes. Get rid of Maguire, Dunst, and Raimi and bring in some new younger talent or someone you wouldn’t really expect. What if David Gordon Green followed Pineapple Express with Spiderman? Sounds funny, but you never would have expected him to do a buddy comedy stoner movie. The only thing that I hope they keep is JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. I love that guy.

why you say dunst is the cigarettes to the keys? i for one wouldn’t miss her.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Hunter, do you have to speak in riddles?
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:36 pm
I wasn’t a fan of 3. I was so excited. SOOOO pumped. It was ridiculous. And I had this weird sensation. One I had never had before. A urge to get up and leave the theater, but I sat through it anyways. Eight dollars and fifty cents. Bull shit.
I would like to see a whole new crew tackle this thing. But if they do that, I don’t want it to turn into a James Bond franchise where they just reboot again and again, and every once in a while upgrade the software.

Take a break. Reboot the series in 5 years.
Get a new, good, director. A good special effects team. And a lead that can play Spider-Man and Peter without looking like he’s about to burst into tears everytime he speaks. And bring in the “smart-ass” spidey found in the comics. You know the guy who talks mad shit while he’s getting punched or doing the ass kicking?
And get a “hot” Mary Jane this time. Never understood why they chose ugly for her in the first place.

i’ve been reading/collecting/watching spidey since i was 5 (lord i’m old!), so it’s really hard for me to see ironman be so succesful while the superior spiderman is in limbo, and part 3 was just shit. i really wish marvel was able to take it on the way they are with the other titles.
i’d love more than anything to see raimi & co come back for 4 & 5 just to show that they are the kings of this (as SM2 displayed though TDK may take the title, imo) but i just don’t see it happening at all. damn, damn, damn. for me, tobey will always be parker, but i’ll be a web-head no matter what.
btw, does anyone know if raimi has ever been man enough to address the car accident that was sm3? it sucks that it made so much, because i know alot of them use the $$$ to justify ’success’.

I was a comic collector for 15 years and I came to
the conclusion that the books were books and the
movies were movies. No one can possibly compare
the Spidey movies to the Batman franchise…that
was plain awful. I for one enjoyed Spiderman 3,
although I did think the Venom storyline was
rushed.

@ diesel
It means she’s the least important to the equation. Keys, wallet, cigarettes, in that order when leaving a place.

Yeah I didn’t have any problems with S3, and yes the suits do use the $$ angle because money speaks volumes in this town.
It looks like there going to shoot 4&5 back to back that’s a real good sign that Rami and Tobey will be back. (Believe it or not).
One thing to remember about blockbusters like Spider Man, the fans really like Tobey. Even if everyone here thinks he’s too old or just sucks. There’s 20 kids that outvote you with their parents money. Hahaha

Ok, for one, I hate new people playing old roles. Especially if it’s not a “reboot”. When a story picks up where the last left off and it’s a totally different take on the character because of a new actor, it’s always painful to sit through for me. The only time I see it as ok is when the previous actor died. Unless you figure out how to “Weekend at Bernie’s” the dead actor, I’m cool with a new guy.
But, Spiderman 3…christ. I was so pumped for it because the first two (2 especially) delivered on such an immense scale. But, then 3…aside from the fact that Spidey went from slinging webs to slinging tears, the villain mash-up a la Schumacher was too much to take. Sandman could’ve EASILY been the only villain for the movie as could’ve Goblin or Venom (did we have to see Topher Grace’s face every time Venom spoke???). Enough about garbage..
4 and 5 could be good. Get it back to roots. Adapt a good comic arc, bring in a bunch of actual comic writers to give pointers (let Loeb do it all) and stop crying. That’ll be good enough for me.

Yup - this series totally needs a refreshing a la Batman Begins. SM3 so sucked. The whole bad Petey schtick was brutal. I mean the little lock of hair on the forehead… reminiscent of Clooney’s Bat Nipples. And I love Spiderman. Big Time - so here’s hoping they do sort it out right when they get back to it. As for Kiki being on the outs, well, we’ll always have those wet almost see-thru pics from the original to help keep us warm at night.
Cheers,

what they should do is “kraven’s last hunt”. that’d reboot the story well enough. the original crew can come back or they can get a new one. either way is good.
May 23rd, 2008 at 8:03 pm
I’ll be laughing if they cast Jake Gyllenhaal (april fools post) as spidey. lol
May 23rd, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Kravens Last Hunt would be an awesome Spidey reboot, or bring in a good Gwen Stacy with Goblin.
Alex Ross style art. Make it realistic..even if Spider Man was set in the 70’s like the old comics.

lets finally do the lizard story! the bond between connors & parker has been set up well, and it could go back to the kind of core/focused story that we had with doc ock. i know it could go nicely with kraven coming to hunt the lizard and that whole thing could spill into part five, but i really don’t like kraven & i dread how silly he could look onscreen.
if there HAS to be a second villian, make rhino or shocker be a minor threat. (or someone like that)
its way too early for a reboot, the series just needs raimi to pull his shit together and stay focused. spidey is still king, and raimi needs to remind us all what a pimp he can be.
May 24th, 2008 at 2:36 am
Yeah Orange Cinema, throw Carnage in there and we got a deal!
May 24th, 2008 at 3:21 am
Make a Venom Movie already, nobody cares about Spider-Man.
May 24th, 2008 at 3:22 am
A new director would be nice, Mr Raimi is sick of doing them thats why the 3rd one was so weak compared to the 1st two.
May 24th, 2008 at 3:28 am
R Chandler when did Raimi talk to you?
May 24th, 2008 at 6:17 am
I say wait a couple more years and relaunch the franchise, even with new cast and director if necessary. Spidey needs a break.
May 24th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Since we’re all talking in metaphor here, I for one don’t smoke, so I’d toss that pack of smelly no-talent in the garbage and get me some nice non-addictive gum. Everyone likes gum right?
Maybe in the flavour of an Allison Mack? She’s got some super hero cred already and unlike Dumbst, she can actually act a little.
As for the film franschise, I seriously worry how much worse another flick (or flicks) might be. Spidey 3 was a total disaster, and I have been a fan of the comics franchise for going on 3 decades now.
May 24th, 2008 at 10:35 am
The only problem with Spidey 3 was the rushed Venom story. They shoulda set it up for the 4th one. Kinda liek the Joker card in Batman… they coulda done the bell tower scene at the end of the movie and did the venom unveiling for a second and leave people waiting. The way it ended there was no cliff hanger or set up for a 4th…
May 24th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Everyone keeps saying that the third film ruins the series for them, but this is not the case for me. It was not a good movie, but I still love the first two and look forward to the prospect of a new movie. To me, #3 either got a big head full of hot air and got carried away with itself, or was interefered with. Either way, it failed.
To me, this does not mean a future film is doomed to fail, however.
May 24th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Yeah Alex, I agree….
I had no probs with Spider Man 3. None!
June 14th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
