RunawaysI knew it was going to happen eventually, Marvel Studios has announced that they will be brining Brian K Vaughn’s Runaways to the big screen. Vaughn, best known for the critically acclaimed Y: The Last Man Series (also in some stage of development with DJ Caruso and possibly starring Shia LaBeouf), created Runaways in 2002 with Adrian Alphona, and is also penning the screenplay. It should be noted that Vaughn is also a co-producer and writer for LOST.

The series follows a group of teenagers discover that their parents are an organized group of super villains called The Pride. On the run from their homes, the group bands together and begin a journey of discovery, both of their parents’ origins and of their own inherited powers.

Unlike most other books in the Marvel universe, the individual Runaways story arcs are collected in small, manga-sized trade paperbacks. In 2006, the series won the Harvey Award for best continuing/limited series. Geek god Joss Whedon, a vocal fan of the book, took over the series after Vaughan and Alphona left at issue #24 of the title’s second volume.

Marvel is not ready to set a date for this latest adaptation or the previously announced Ant Man.

Runaway's is excellent and if you haven't already, find a copy and read it. And for the love of god, buy the bigger collection if you can because the small manga sized books are really washed out and totally detract Alphona's artwork.

Brian K. Vaughan's works have always seemed epic enough for film and this story tackles the superhero genre in an extremely fresh way that I hope translates onto the big screen.

Wasn't a fan of this series. It was like The Hills with superpowers to me.

Marvel is on a goddamn roll.

    @ Captain Awesome

Hold your tongue! The last thing those reality t.v. wannabes need are superpowers! Heaven forbid.

Haven't read it but heard about it. Could be cool if they do it right, I guess.
  • Captain Awesome
Well im sure that's how "Heroes" happened ;)

Okay, it's awesome (and inevitable) that Runaways is coming to the moving picture medium. However, Marvel's got it all wrong. With the teen drama and witty dialogue, Runaways needs to be a TELEVISION SHOW, not a movie! It has perfect potential to be a great ongoing, and enough storyline to keep it going until it branches off into its own non-comic stories. Are you listening, Marvel? Probably not...

Oh, and no Fannings for the Molly part, thank you very much.
  • YoungZe
Nargh, i thought the comic was fucking annoying, every single person in the comic was emo. Emos with superpowers are a pain in the ass.
  • Loved the book. Actually, just about everything Vaughan has done has been good. Wasn't a huge fan of his "Ultimate X-Men" work because it was like "Runaways" at the Xavier mansion. But, "Y", "Ex Machina" and "Runaways" are all phenomenal.

As much as I hate to say it, I can see Capt. Awesome and YoungZe's points of view, but I still enjoyed the book. Nathaniel is right though, it's one of those books that would've worked a lot better as a TV series. Like "100 Bullets" (someone make this into an HBO series!!!) or "Fables".
  • Eric
I agree, it would work better as a television show.

I can't see how people would find these kids annoying or anything like the crap shown on "The Hills." The one thing that always kind of hit me when reading this was that these kids seemed more real and more wholesome than anything teens are digesting these days.

    awesome I fucking love Runaways

hope they get a good writer and director

it'd be cool to see Whedon take it on but I doubt that'll happene.
  • bigmansmallmouth
Hell. Yes. One of my favorite new comics. Also, Brian K. is a pretty flawless writer. So yeah, I'd like to see some justice done for this.
  • YoungZe
@Sixfeetunderthegun: 100 Bullets TV Series? That would be mindblowing. It would be even more awesome if the series would have 100 episodes. =D

Again to Runaways: Another reason why i didn't like the books was that it was just to much stuff going on, i mean, come on, the one is a robot, the girl is a skrull, a magican, a vampire and so on, it was ... way to much.
  • Joe Newman
lol you dont know about villains of the week? not a true comic fan I guess

sometimes they throw stuff in that doesn't pertain to the main plot but its a nice breather
  • YoungZe
Guess again. :? Just because i didn't like one comic doesn't mean i no comic fan. What logic is this?
  • Joe Newman
just joking around man I only really saw the vampire comment when I read that

I don't know I liked the inclusion of the different marvel superpowers
  • YoungZe
Okay, yeah i agree the inclusion was nice but everything just came to fast and to much.
  • super-aj
I just saw this, and this is about the 100th time I've heard of 'the runaways' I'm gonna go buy vol. 1 tomorrow and get it over with, everything of Vaughan’s I like, so I'm actually pretty excited to read it...now that its summer, I'll have time to. Pretty excited to hear that something of Vaughan's is coming to the big-screen!
