Good news for Transformers fans, Soundwave will appear in the Transformers sequel. When Michael Bay was developing Transformers, rumor had it that Soundwave would make an appearance (possibly as a modern day MP3 player). And while that never happened in the original film, screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have confirmed that Soundwave is included in the script for Transformers 2.
“We had to get Soundwave in there,” Orci told IGN. “You know, we had Ravage in an early draft of the first movie and Soundwave, and we couldn’t do it right and I think this time hopefully we’ll have the ability to do it.”
For those who don’t know, Soundwave is one of the most recognized original Transformers characters. You might remember Soundwave as the Decepticon which could transform into a microcassette recorder. As the Decepticon Communications Officer, he can detect and jam radio transmissions all across the energy spectrum and has the ability to monitor electrical impulses within brain circuitry (i.e. read minds). Orci also promises that the sequel will be more appealing to hardcore fans.
“Some of the die hard fans. . . felt. . . Maybe it wasn’t science fictiony enough. And I think the second one will deliver on a true Transformers story. You know, the first one, we had a limited budget for what it was. Every second of Transformer time is a million dollars or whatever the heck it is, so this time, because we were able to prove through the whole thing that it’s a viable live-action movie, we have a little more freedom this time to actually learn about the Transformers, see them, hear them. It’s a better balance between the humans and the Transformers.”
I think most people would agree that the transformers were not given enough screen time in the first film. And I’m not just talking about action sequences, but character exploration. But I’m sure the sequel will probably be more human-based than they’re letting on. And I really doubt that the Decepticons will have three-dimensional character arcs when the film hits the big screen. But we can hope.

Cell phone interference, mayhaps? More authority impersonation? Are question marks needed? Can I stop asking questions? Am I making an ass out of myself? Does that last one even need to be asked?
Anyway, good to hear he’ll be in there and such.

I hope they make him a Zune.

i get they have to update soundwave but by making him an mp3 player (or whatever) they will lose the cassettes soundwave used to have.
if you guys (geeks) remember the cassettes used to turn into little robots, which operated independently of soudwave. I think he had flying ones, animals ones and little miniature robot ones.
losing those little guys would be a real shame and would really take away from the whole soundwave character.

I agree with the casettes, it would be a shame to lose laserbeak! but it’s very plausible that a deal can be made with Apple to make a Soundwave iPod… (but what would it spawn?)

Yes, but you gain the possibility of a ginormous docking station.
*note: I did not remember the cassettes.

yeah im a bit confused with the whole mp3 player thing, because soundwaves cassettes were cool. (one was a pterodactyl called laserbeak, another was a big cat (panther?) called ravage)
I thought frenzy was a replacement for soundwave, not a very impressive one because they were so different, but he did transform into a cd player.

Forget cassettes, regress to Betamax. (Or at least Betacam, duh!)

ya i remember the cassettes:
ravage - panther
laserbeak - bird
rumble - robot
frenzy - robot
buzzsaw - bird
i know there were other but i dont remember the names
one thing im having trouble with is how they will incorporate Soundwave, if my memory serves me right, wasnt Soundwave considered second in charge to Megatron?? How would they do that when Megatron is huge and Soundwave would be small (size of MP3 player) and remember with the first film there wasnt to be any mass shifting. Also the fact that if Soundwave is to be a MP3 player, is there to be any robots to come out of him (like a ravage or laser beak)? would they be in the form of memory cards?? Interesting questions, it would be nice to see what they come up with.

How will they explain his ability to shrink to a pocket size device? Maybe that has been worked out somewhere, but I was never that deep. Haven’t even seen the first film. I liked Soundwave because of the tapes, and he was the best looking one in robot form IMO. Only Transformer I ever owned. Shit, I just noticed the guy up above mentioned, “mass shifitng.” I guess that is my answer. Fuck it, I’m posting anyways.

the fact that they left out soundwave because it ‘wasn’t going to work’, makes me feel really good bout these guys writing the scripts. they could’ve forced it in, and screwed up one of the best characters, but i admire the decision to opt for a little patience, and the oportunity to do it right in the sequel.
also, soundwave must feel really excited about being one of the all time favs. he really deserves it, as he’s such a loyal and complex character. i hope he’s not too nervous in front of the camera.

I know they need to update Soundwave, but it doesn’t mean
I have to like it! Yay for more product placement.

I suppose they could like, make him a giant CD player??? lol that just sounds ridiculous now that I’ve typed it. It will be very interesting to see how they pull it off.

I could see them actually updating him to this:

instead of soundwave being like this i-pod dude, he should be a cool, black, shiny, big grilled, spinners on the wheels hummer kind of car. you know, like a cool hip-hop, rap, gangsta gangsta kind of guy. now that would be more fitting

He could be like in Animated, a Scion and in robot mode look the same as always. The cassetes could be his tires?
