Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass in Pre-production

Kick-Ass ComicA film adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr’s Kick-Ass has now officially entered pre-production according to Comic Book Resources. Based on the creator-owned comic from Marvel’s Icon imprint, the story follows a a 15-year-old boy named Dave Lizewski who attempts to become a real-life superhero. The catch is that he has no powers or any of the stereotypical reasons for choosing to fight crime.

The screenplay was written by the Stardust team of Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn. And the rumors were true, the movie will be directed by Vaughn, who was previously attached to the Thor film (his holding deal expired). The project has been fully financed from his MARV Films company. They are currently searching for distribution options. Not only has the project entered pre-production, but they have already begun casting the adaptation. CBR teases that “when news breaks on a certain actor they have lined up…” that a distribution deal will be right around the corner.

Prior to the series launch a viral campaign featuring a short video of the main character of the comic being “caught on tape” was uploaded to YouTube and spread around the internet. The video shows the hero saving someone who was mugged in a supermarket car parking lot. Check out that video below.

Thanks to the incomparable Mel Valentin for passing this along.

the comic has only been out for about three months

hell they're only on the third issue

Yeah, and they'll reeeeaallly have to stretch to make the movie good, because the book is pure rubbish.
  • charles
How are they going to have superbowl ad with a title of KickAss.
  • Flint
Also, it doesn't matter how many issues have actually been published -- WANTED got option after only one issue was done, and the screenwriters basically made up their own story from there. Which is mainly why the movie is 90% different from the comic (which was also more of Millar's wish-fulfillment wank rubbish).
  • The video was stupid. I couldn't tell what was going on. I thought the "hero" was the bad guy until it was explained to me at the end.

Never even heard of this comic before. I wish them all the worst.
  • It's a cool concept, but I wasn't wowed by the video. Really what band of muggers hangs around for 8 minutes and lets a guy tape the whole thing on a camera phone? None of this is adding up at all.

Lot of people talking down on this...maybe you should pick up issue #1 before you judge it based on the limited details peter provided. It sounds kind of like a stupid idea based on how this blog post reads but let me tell you... this comic is VERY good. On the myspace page you can read a few pages of issue #2 as well
You can imagine what would happen if tomorrow some kid in our NYC went out and did something like this. It’s not like where in a “comic book” the good guy always comes out on top. In his first attempt at being a crime fighter he gets beaten up, stabbed, and hit by a car all in like 5 minutes. The police want to arrest him and then there are the countless people who saw that he got on TV for doing this so they now want a piece of the action themselves (the comic pages from issue 2 posted on myspace show a guy doing this)

sure the video looks cheezy but it's supposed to. Bedcause this is supposed to be happening in our real world

I'm trying to put the myspace link in the name section because this isn't letting me post. I think that's why

    @ Jack M

I don't even think the third issue has officially dropped yet.
    we'll see.

Never heard of the comic book, but the video is lame beyond belief. Like my friend here, I didn't know what was going on.
  • Wow! This is great. can't wait for more Kick Ass comics and Video clips. This is the only comic my 14 year old reads. The Future of comics has no magic.

Much like the Captain, I have not heard of this book. The YouTube video was suppose to drive interest in the concept? Cause' it looked like something one of those Star Wars goofs would put toghether. I was waiting for a lightsaber to come into play. Not too sure that this thing will gain speed like they anticipate.

I like how everyone keeps saying they haven't heard of it lol it's only been in print since the start of this year and it's produced by Millar's personal company... not DC or Marvel. So unless you follow comics you're probably not going to have heard about it yet... if you give casual glances to any decent comic news sites tho then there's no way you can avoid being slapped in the face with it because it's so popular right now amongst people who have heard of it.
  • If you are negatively commenting on this bit of news without even having read the comic book, may you die a slow and extremely painful death.

I here one badass car is being built for this movie. better than gone in 60

I have read the 4 comics that are out. I liked them. This video seemed poorly done. On the comic they are beating the hell out of the guy, blood is everywhere as the guy fights them off with two 3 feet long sticks while wearing a weird self made super hero outfit. The video shown here seemed like it was made by some teenagers who liked the comic.

This looks like a very intriguing concept. I saw this video on youtube a while back and thought it was for real! Having not read the comic yet, I have a question for you readers out there: is this a really gritty, realistic, philosophical story or is it more over-the-top fun? I'm curious what route they're going on this.

This comic is what it says Kick-ass, and the superhero's name is Kick-Ass, check it out before making any decisions about the movie. Also its not Mark Millars personal company, but rather an imprint for Marvel called ICON that allows the creator to maintain ownership of their creation, but Marvel does the printing and Advertising for them and gets a little of the profit. It has to be good stuff for them to print anything, and so far has mostly been used for their own top writers to keep them from wanting to leave or go somewhere else. The video is pretty realistic and thats what they were going for. The guys beating up the guy stuck around for eight minutes because they were mafia or something and they were supposed to break the targets legs. fyi
