Advanced Iron forum member TMP just completed his custom Iron Man costume just in time for the film’s theatrical premiere. Incredible work! Stan Winston would be proud. TMP says he spent $1500-2000 on the material compound alone, never-mind months of trial and error. The resulting suit looks pretty real to me. But outside of Comic-Con and Halloween, where do you wear such a thing? Check out the photos of this custom armor after the jump. Thanks to my friend Vic from Screenrant for passing this one along.

haha nerds.
May 4th, 2008 at 4:01 am
That is frikin awesome!
May 4th, 2008 at 4:48 am
Capt. Awesome - surely anyone who posts on /Film on a regular basis (including me) is a nerd.
As for the costume, that’s pretty darn spot on. Good on the guy for doing something he’ll get some enjoyment out of.
May 4th, 2008 at 5:38 am
It’s a fat Iron Man!
May 4th, 2008 at 6:12 am
The face is a little scrunched up and angry looking compared to the movie’s suit.
He could probably suit up and walk the strip in LA, charging people a buck to take their picture with him like that Superman guy.
May 4th, 2008 at 7:56 am
pretty cool but it looks like it’s made from pretty cheap plastic.. Not saying it is.. it just looks like it is.
May 4th, 2008 at 8:00 am
I would have to say that the costume is a bit mis proportioned and fat/scrunched looking…
My first thought was “Wow, That is what Iron Man would look like after he got married to a stripper and moved to a trailer park for about 3 years living off 3 12packs of bud a day and nothing but pork rinds for dinner.”
May 4th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Wow — that’s very, very cool!
May 4th, 2008 at 9:21 am
Haha. People calling other people ‘nerds’ while using the internet.
May 4th, 2008 at 9:36 am
wearing this in the summertime in san diego is gonna be a hot as a biiiiitch. well, i guess its no differnet than wearing a storm trooper costume. what homeboy needs to do is work on the arc reactor chestpiece because thats key to the costume.
May 4th, 2008 at 9:59 am
Hey guys:
1. Regarding the look of the costume: The guy designed/sculpted it MONTHS ago, based on just a couple of reference photos. You don’t crank something like this out in your garage overnight.
2. Of course it’s plastic. Do you think a fan has a huge fabrication set up where he can build a suit with complex surfaces out of metal? Sheesh.
3. Nerdy? Of course. Duh. :-)

It’s Lardy Man.
He shoots blocks of fat and sprays high pressure bursts of cooking oil at the baddies.
May 4th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Looks like Iron Man let himself go. It’s pretty good for someone who probably hasn’t even seen the movie by now. I would like to that suit tied to a jet plane with some real long almost invisible rope which will give him the appearance that he’s actaully flying. Too bad this suit is not bullet proof, knife proof, or even water proof. I probably can’t even withstand temperatures that are above 80 degrees. All we need is for some guy to built his own Iron Monger suit and watch them stand side by side in the streets, yup, that’ll be awesome.
May 4th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Pretty cool, but it looks a little chunky.
May 4th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
It looks pretty frickin sweet.
This guy spent time and good effort making something dedicated to a rad movie. To me, that relegates any negative comments as good ol fashioned hatin.

May 4th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Also, Iron-Man fat.
May 4th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
You guys are doggin a guy who spent all his time making this costume and calling him fat. Call him a nerd, fine; but making fun of him because of his weight? That’s pretty low, considering that most of the people on this board doesn’t have the talent and/or patience to make this.
May 4th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
keep an eye out in your local k-mart / department store.
this guy just quit his day job so you’ll see him doing promos for iron man in a mall near you soon
May 4th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Two words. Bad ass!
May 4th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
“pretty cool but it looks like it’s made from pretty cheap plastic.. Not saying it is.. it just looks like it is.”
Johnny D, +1. In film I heard that there must be platimun in material structure of the costume.
“It’s a fat Iron Man”
Rocky, may be so, then he must vizit aerobics and fitness. :)
May 4th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Two words. Fat Ass!
May 5th, 2008 at 4:03 am
Wow…girl magnet!
May 5th, 2008 at 6:20 am
Looks like all the chud talkbackers found their way here after those wimps instituted their new policy of censorship.
Nicks comics blow and Devans fat…feels good to say that.
May 5th, 2008 at 7:19 am
The armor is mainly cast in fiberglass… while it is a polymer compound, this is not vacuumformed plastic. I have been following TMP’s progress on the costuming discussion boards costume since late 2007. Good to see him getting some press for all his hard work.
May 5th, 2008 at 7:23 am
Amazing. Some guy with a heckuva talent and skill creates something like this, and people complain that he’s “fat” or “chunky,” and that the armor looks like plastic??? C’mon, folks! When’s the last time any of you actually did something creative, other than try to come up with put-downs on other people’s efforts?
May 5th, 2008 at 7:51 am
Nice job.
May 5th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Screen Rant: Seriously right? Forget about building it out of metal. Even if he did pull it off, he wouldn’t be able to move in it.
Also, you guys out there who are hating on the suit because apparently the guy is ‘fat’:
Get a life and do something more productive than insulting a very awesome costume that took months to put together and looks great. You want to complain about the lack of metal, then you build one and put it on, then I want to see you walk around in a convention center with it. I hope you die of anorexia, have a nice day :)
May 6th, 2008 at 2:11 am
Hello. I found this just now looking at the webb. Well i had no idea I was Fatt :) I got a 38 waistline i am 6.1 and weight arround 225 lbs. I whould say thats can not be catogorized as fat. But anyway funny how people se this.
Well to tell a bit about the armor. The armor is primarly made of Glassfiber. Its a time consuming process and i am very happy that the design turned out like it did considering this was done prior to the premier looking at the original design.
Well the midsection armor is in ABS Plastic. Its layers of ABS sheets plates that move on top of eachother. Well i had little help from my whife to get it on so it was put on a bit wrong. The abplate bended outwards because a strap in the crotch was not atached. Anyway i think this causes me to go to the Gym. I just trew my food in the garbage and i guess i have to go and grab a carrot to please the crowd :) heheh ….
People tend to forgett how much CGI is used in a movie. Like Predator they only used foam painted and the preds had no head. That was all CGI aftewards. Well this is no CGI on this suit. It is what is is. :)
Thanks to the crowd for the kind word!
May 6th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Oh… I hope i did not kill the topic. No worries No offence taken and non given. I am a happy guy :)
May 6th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
To add on to ‘fatness issue’ you guys are having. I’m sure TMP designed the suit so that he could actually move in it. Robert Downey Jr. said that the one in the movie was uncomfortably tight at times. It’s usually like that with these kinds of costumes in Hollywood you know? If you saw the behind-the-scenes in the first X-Men DVD, the actors and actresses couldn’t even jump over a two/three foot wall with the leathers.
May 8th, 2008 at 8:05 am
need a kid size need to make the palms light up but its great
May 8th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
What a piece of shit. Make something useful nerd!
May 8th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
225 and 38 waist at 6′1″? Yeah, that’s not exactly in shape. And the suit does look a bit chunky. Part of the whole reason it looks good in the movie is because of how sleek it is. I’ve got to say, amazing amount of work and all, good use of colors, etc, but it doesn’t look that good.
May 8th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
dude thats friggin awesome i need one for my halloween custom, wow that is kool!!
May 8th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Hey TMP, I’m blown away by the job you’ve done; could you possibly e mail me instructions/list of materials?
May 9th, 2008 at 3:08 am
THIS SUIT IS QUITE COOL..GUESS ALL OF YA,DREAMING OF ONE RIGHT????JUST BE PROUD OF HIM KAY..NO SILLY COMMENTS..BRAVO! =)
May 9th, 2008 at 8:10 am
Well the design it self can fit a person smaller in waist. It will look allot nicer. The problem is that most costumes made for a sizegroup of people arround 5.10 tall.
I know my body prortions and i know i am not fat.
But aperently people have not seen the stunt suit of the movie. Its bulky as well. Also what makes the suit look comact is because the feet is not done. The feet will raise him arround aditiona 2-4 inches extra. making the legs sleek like the movie.
As far as the abdominal armor. The abplate and back lower armor was not atached by the crotch. So they are angeling outwards.
Well the design in good and it fits a big perspective of people.
I got other photos of the suit and it looks all differnt and it looks great. The photo above was me testing out the suit and my only help came from my whife helping me with the suit….
THE COSTUME IN USE ON TV:
Here is a Interwuive with me on TV. Its shows me wearing the suit.
I think the proportions are good. And its correct assembled on. Other than the helmet is posstion to high. The TV Crew guy helped with the helmet on. And YES it will be coved by the neckseal and nothing will be seen.
Also the final boots were not in that shot.
http://www1.nrk.no/nett-tv/nyheter/spill/verdi/53841
Take the suit for what it is and look at the design.
May 9th, 2008 at 8:45 am
People don’t realize how hard it is to make a suit like this and STILL be able to move around in. And people talking crap about the look, why don’t you try making it. Too bad you can’t.
May 10th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Awesome! Must have taken a lot of time and effort. The suit looks awesome. Never mind all the haters. Wish i had the time and Knowhow to put something like this together, thanks for sharing.
May 10th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Well, this looks like a pretty amazing suit. Props to ya for having the patience and knowledge to put something like this together. In relation to all you douche bags hatin’ on the dude, all I can say is you’re jealous because you lack the skill to make something like this. You also lack the brain capacity to read it seems, as right above this comment box it says “No hate speech allowed. If you must argue, please debate intelligently.” Well, you fail here morons. The man is not fat, he’s average weight for his size. Just because he’s not the same build as the man you see portrayed in the movie does not make him fat.
May 11th, 2008 at 3:25 am
Awesome! I cant believe people actually complains, what the hell? Its one of the best fan creations ive ever seen, kudos to the creator!
Just look at this one for comparison..: http://www.thecomicforums.com/forum2//index.php?showtopic=130862
May 11th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
hahahahahahahahaha!
it just kills me to see people actually writing hate comments
about something this cool. personally, i couldn’t DREAM of
ever doing something so cool in my life, it must have taking
LOOONG, and it doesn’t look exactly easy to do. its f’in FANTASTIC
and i couldn’t believe my eyes when i saw the pic. as for everyone
complaining about the material and what not, post us a pic of
your own version ok? :) i’d love to see how much better you can do it!
and oh as for the FAT bit of the conversation.. wow, people
really do suck nowadays don’t they?? the man builds a
completely normal looking suit and people call him fat?
or chunky? or even (for heavens sake!) compare it with the PROFESSIONAL work and editing done for the movie???
wkae up people!!! Jesus Christ
TMP? congrats man!!! you did a great job! and its refreshing to
find that you aren’t bothered with what people are saying either.
;p what’s next?? :D
May 11th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
did i mention that it doesn’t look fat to me at all?
coz i’m just wondering if i’m weird that way… =/ lol
May 11th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
congrads on such a work of art, im curious as to how you put it on, i mean is it done section by section or do you have some sort of clasps you added in to keep it as just a few pieces
May 11th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
That’s a really great suit. Any kind of weapons on that!
May 11th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
This is seriously amazing. I am in complete awe at the time, hard effort, and dedication that went into this costume.
All the fat comments are infuriating, though. People are comparing a man with an average build - not fat, average - who built his homemade suit to fit his body type with minimum discomfort to a Hollywood actor (whose job, I might add, is highly dependent on him having an idealized body type) in a too-tight suit that’s been edited with CGI to look exactly the way the director wants him to look. The average person cannot be expected to live up to celebrity ideals. The man has created a proportionate Iron Man costume that looks incredible. When someone makes a costume that gives Iron Man a beer belly, THEN people can start with the fat comments. Until then, they’re only proving how gullible and susceptible to suggestion they are.
May 11th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
how much would you sell the ironman suit for. please e-mail me and let me know. But if not please tell me how you made it and what are the materials that are needed thanks a lot and it will be greatly appreciated
May 12th, 2008 at 2:41 am
Thank you all for the nice feedback of the armor.
The proccess of making the armor was first to make a lifecast, then on top of that you start to sculpt it in clay. Of course the lifecast whold be to the size you want the suit.
Once finished sculpted with all the proportions then you can move on taking cast of the sculp and make a mould.
From this mould you take a pull and you clean the piece you get from it. You redetail and make it all stand strong in its detail. You spend allot of time on this peice because this peice will become the final mould. Once everything is clean and detail you take the cast making the final mould. Now you got a CLEAN and SHARP PEICE.
The midsection armor is made of ABS so another mould tecniq is required. Because the armor you start from the inside out and the ABS from the outside. The vac form you pull the sheet down on the mould. The glassfiber you build up from the inside of the mould so you in fact start with the outer skin.
The one we work on now looks MUCH better. Photos to come.
May 12th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Well that was a wasted $1500 - $2000.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:20 am
To all of you comments on this being lame of the maker being fat, take a good look in the mirror. You’re most likely bigger losers than you’ll admit. So sad. And frankly….I find this costume HOT!!!
May 13th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Hey guys relax. I am not offended by this. People may think what they want but i do encourage to a civil and adult normal and polite behavior. Internett has made us unsocial and rude to people we write to because its easier to avoid an direct reaction.
Anyway as i said before the suit can fit a variary of sizes.
It may look compact but if a person with a size 36 waistline goes in the proportions will look better. The armor is the armor and it will not change. The only thing that can change the look is the wearer.
Please keep it to a civil and constructive reply.
I thank you all for the nice support and i am sure the kids will love it. Like i try to teach them . You dont have to wear and armor or have superpowers to be a hero. You can do a difference by just doing something good. It does not take much. My point is that politness and acceptance to other people is og big importance with or without discuize.
May 13th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Anyone who has said anything bad about this costume should stop being mean to my son. He worked long and hard on this costume and he is not fat he is big boned. He probably has half the fat that you all have, cos at least he has taken the time to do something constructive and creative. You all stink and i hope that you all meet the real iron man one day you villans.
May 14th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
That iron man suit, and some axe body spray, and you’ll have every lady on the planet. lol
That is a super awesome suit.
May 15th, 2008 at 2:51 am
He is a Norwegian 40 year old NERD..
May 15th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Wow thats so cool… Now if only it is possible to fabricate the Iron Man Costume out of metals or alloys… then we got ourselves a real iron man thats pretty much baddies proof unless they have something big like a car haha.
May 15th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Awesome suit! Wish it was easier and more readily available for sale though. Any chance to get the plans for it?
May 15th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
SO i think this suit is flatr out amazing!! U would give my left nut to have or even the ability to make it. If you ever make another one to sell or sell this on tell me ill pay what it takes!! WOW yet again, great job man.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:19 am
TONY STARK BUILT THAT COSTUME IN A CAVE! WITH JUST A PILE OF SCRAPS!
May 16th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
where can i get one
May 16th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
You look like that guy that sometimes sells stormtrooper armor with orange paudron on ebay. Pictures taken in a desert, rocky area outside with a long blaster if memory serves.
Nice job on this Iron Man armor!
