Indiana Jones 4: First Review and 14 New Photos

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Someone has seen Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Jeff Wells has the scoop from someone on the Crystal Skull team over in Spielberg-land (read: I’m not sure how much you can believe this over-the-top positive report), and here are the highlights:

  • “The best of the Indy sequels.”
  • “The film has the strongest supporting cast of the sequels.”
  • “There are many breakneck set pieces, with a protracted jungle chase being particularly memorable. As well as being evocative of the truck chase from the first movie.”
  • “…an ending that any longtime diehard fan of the films could only dream about. Expect a particularly resounding reaction in the theater.”

You can read the full report on Hollywood-Elsewhere.If those kind of quotes don’t get you excited than I dont know what will… oh, maybe some new production photos? A bunch of new production photos have also surfaced on the web, most of which appeared in an unnamed foreign magazine:

I hope the movie will be good in the spirit of the previous movies, or else it would be a tremendous waste of time.

This is good news, indeed. Sure, it's hard to determine the veracity of this review, but any positive words are welcome after all the badmouthing from the motherfuckers at CHUD.

I'm glad to hear comparisons to the seminal truck chase from "Raiders" and the (apparently) satisfying ending. Also, it sounds like the supporting cast delivers, in spades.

I'm positive Lucas and Spielberg will pull this off, against all odds. Only 30 days to go, gents...
  • awsome, looks pretty cool.... bye....

WTF is going on with the 4th pic?
  • Some of those pics look amazing...
  • George Lucas
I sure hope George Lucas doesn't manage to make a Phantom Menace out of this one.
  • @George.

Are you talking about yourself in the third person? Are you saying you hope you don't line up a week before the movie opens?

Or are you saying that the " other" George Lucas better not have ruined the.. "wicked awesome film you have imagined in your head since you were a child".... That you are concerned that maybe it might not live up to the potential it should have after 10 years of of rolling around in your candy apple?

I'll do you a favor then...Get ready to be disappointed.

    From where I stand.
Indy 4 looks contrived and unnecessary.

The red flag for me is Shia. aka: Short round.

Theres no reason to introduce a new character into the Jones franchise unless you want to pass the torch. I am not willing to be made to think I'm watching Indy 4..when in reality I'm watching an origin story, Episode 1 of " Mutt the Adventurer "
  • Irritated and Indignant Movie
Why are people analyzing the movie to shreds before anyone has even seen the thing? That's my question. How can anyone say with certainty that the movie will be a disappointment? How can the poster above be certain that Shia's character will be another Short Round? The short answer is, quite simply, that they can't. The only people that you are really setting up for disappointment are yourselves.

Here's a special suggestion for those of you who seem to be a little agitated over the movie: since you will obviously be seeing the movie regardless of what your opinion of it might be before it comes out, why not abandon any pre-conceived expectations and opinions and judge the film for what it is - AFTER seeing it? It'll save you a lot of time and energy, and, quite frankly, will probably make the experience better for you.

This movie is directed by Spielberg. That guy has never dissappointed me once. If he's directing, then it will be butter, you guys need to stop trippin'.

ok ok ok, Paramount, STOP now.. I don't want 367 photos and 25 videoclips of Indy. You already screw Ironman
  • Steven Spielberg
    Ha-Ha, oh George!

Hey guys, don't listen to my clinically insane friend. This movie will be a blast for the kids and for the adults!

Just please, go see it, so I can continue to fund my 5 villa's and hot rods.

    And my cocaine habit.

    That review sounds fake.

Can't wait! I'm glad there's some word on the film now. I believe that the supporting cast will be great and Cate and Shia, especially.
  • Harborg
Is it a cross on the second picture ? :) hmh arent we over this religious thingie?!?
  • tgibfo
The review is from John Williams, who's probably a little biased. But I suppose the conductor isn't necessarily the guy who has to be singing praises about a movie, so who knows? Regardless, if they went through nineteen years of story and script ideas and we all know that none of them are hurting for cash, I think it's gonna be a blast!

I am concerned, however, that the last shot of Indy looks remarkably like he's on a runway that I saw featured in an episode of The X-Files.............................
  • Zany
    hope it's good
  • gocitizen
well, you know that the ark is going to make an appearance...and a disappearance. I just can't wait to find out what they do with that. This is going to be a fun time at the movies.

I don't understand why people might think that Spielberg doesn't know how to deliver an exciting sequence any more.

The jetpack chase in Minority Report?
The introduction of the tripods in WotW?

It doesn't get much better than that.
  • Trebek
I sure hope this reviewer knows what he's talking about...I don't want this movie to suck.

So, I saw this film last night. I grew up with Indiana Jones as my childhood hero and was excited at the new film. However, no matter how hard I tried to defend it from my friends remarks about it being unbelievable and far-fetched, when i saw the final scene it completely ruined the series (I won't say what it was) but not even I was able to defend what I saw, I can accept a curse or a cup with the power to prolong life but this was UNBELIEVABLE, (in the bad sense), the graphics were appaling and the lack of a real story line made the film unbearable to watch. . . I won't be going to see this film again anytime soon. Sure I'll buy the DVD to complete the collection. . . but i won't watch it.
  • Unknown
Oh I was able to see it before the release date because i work at the cinema =) . . . guys please put your empty popcorn packets in the bin it is very annoying to have to bend down 50 times per screen to pick up a popcorn packet.
  • jonesywins11
yeah i get to go see the midnight showing. i can't wait. in your face
  • poseido666
worst movie of the summer, speed racer is way much better and I didn't like that one either
  • jones sucks.
this film leaves a bad taste in my mouth. it ruins the other films completely. no wonder sean wanted nothing to do with the film. lucus and his counter part are money grubbing fools.
  • Mr. Drum
Just got back from the preview. Loved it!!!!! I agree with Unknown that the last scene was a little crazy but hey, the first 3 movies had their moments too. If you're a fan of the originals like me, you'll love it. There are some great comedic moments that pop up just for the "true fans". Every classic Indy Joke is in there: The hat, snakes, etc.....

    GO SEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Dano
All of the quotes at the top of this page are wrong, which I'm sorry to say because I'm a HUGE Indiana Jones fan. I just got done watching it and the first thought when it was over was that it just shouldn't have been made in the first place.

This movie is NOT better than any of the first three. The ending is okay. It has some good moments, but overall it doesn't feel like Indy much at all. I was very disappointed.
  • Bellach
Just got home from the theatre. Omigod are you kidding me? I waited 19 years for that? Harrison Ford worked so hard in that movie. You can see him struggle and try to conjure up that old Indy magic.
BUT NO! George Lucas had to pull a Star Wars Episode 1 on us.
I think the real George Lucas was killed off back in 1989....
  • Belloq
GL and SS should be banned from using computer graphics.
They should concentrate on developing a good story instead of worrying about throwing a lot of eye candy at the kids.
Did anyone go to the theater just dying to see some amazing computer graphics? HELL no! We wanted to see Indy dig up treasures in exotic locales, solve puzzles, maybe even fight some nazis or crazy hindu cult dudes.
We didn't need indy to be a super-spy, spider man, flying monkey boy, digging up characters from the past who need some acting refresher courses.
  • Borsman
Lucas and Spielberg should never be allowed to touch another writing utensil or piece of film equipment ever again! They're ruining their legacies! I'M DISGUSTED!
  • Rollin
If you want to see this movie in the theatre, wait until it goes to the cheap seats. There are scenes that should not be in the movie and even the big chase scene is so piece-mealed together that it just doesn't make sense.

There were some classic Indiana Jones moments, but it felt more like a fun reunion film for the classic Indy actors, than a movie made to extend the Indiana Jones legacy.

The cinematic quality was very surreal unlike all of the other Indy movies. Overall I was extremely disappointed in this film.
  • GD
Saw it last night, where to begin........

Lucas, please stop having anything to do with movies.....forever.

Ok , thats out of my system. The dialogue in the movie was atrocious, like it was written by a 12 year old. Harrison Ford tried so hard to charm, but he movie was dead. Almost every major scene had something wrong with it. I can understand the willful suspension of disbelief , but all I have to say is , refrigerator.

I knew the movie was going down hill from there, I had a really bad sinking feeling and it was justified. And we were barely 20 minutes in. The chase scene in the jungle? Way too long way and the threat? Are you kidding me? People coming out of walls like they were sitting there just waiting. Magnetism that does not work as magnetism should. Where does it end?

To quote an old movie, "The only winning move is not to play". This movie should never have been made with that script. I played " The fate of Atlantis" on my friends Amiga ages ago, would that not have made for a better script? This movie had Lucas written all over it, we saw what he did to his other children, lets please stop him before he kills again.

Some one make a petition to get him out of moviemaking permanently, please.

This farfetched installment of the Indiana Jones series is a mockery of the original ones. I was very disappointed with the plot and the plot device as they were extremely over thought. I think this movie was overdone because they thought people wouldn't keep interest but it only made the movie that much worse. Indiana Jones needs to be kept what it is, an adventure, not a science fiction. Lucas was wrong for thinking that this movie wouldn't be as appealing if it didn't go over the top. Although there were a few unbelievable parts to the first three, most of the plot devices were centered on the power of God which most people believe as plausible (leap of faith, the ark consuming those who seek God’s power and the cup of Christ causing the temple to crumble when taken past the seal). These are all believable but the plot device in Indiana Jones 4 had to do with aliens. Just because the time period was right smack in the middle of the UFO controversies, doesn't mean that the movie should have anything to do with them. Another repetitive annoyance was the numerous jokes and humor references to the previous films. One or two would have been fine, but this one was just trying too hard. I think it was the only thing Lucas could do, besides going over the top with the science fiction strategy, to attempt to relate this film with the first three because of the large time gap. Lastly, I was disappointed with Karen Allen's character Marion Ravenwood. I don't know if she was asked to play the part different from how she portrayed the character in the first installment, but Marion was a loopy, and total different, character. Overall, I feel that this film was a mockery of the first three, and I don't recommend it. Indiana Jones surviving a nuclear blast, flying for miles, and landing safely all while inside an empty refrigerator, disappointment. Thirteen Crystal skeletons combining into one causing the antagonist's brain to overload of knowledge, ultimately causing a UFO to rise from the ancient ruins only to destroy the ruins and then fly away, disappointment. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, a disappointment.

Saw the 12:01am showing and as a fan of the Indy franchise I can say that this was the biggest disappointment I’ve ever experienced as a moviegoer. As an action-movie junkie and a Harrison Ford fan, I am not one to criticize heavily, but this movie was AWFUL. The story was ridiculous, the writing was hackneyed and contrived, the special effects made James Bond’s stunts look completely believable, and Indy was just a tad too old to be believable. This was a waste of almost two hours (I walked out before it was over and I’ve only done that for one other movie–The Chase with Charlie Sheen). This movie ranks right up there with Beverly Hills Cop 3 as the biggest sequel busts of all time. It was like watching Michael Jordan make his comeback with the Wizards–just plain sad. Indy fans—prepare to be supremely disappointed, this is Indy’s WORST adventure. Save your money and hang on to the good old days…
  • i keep thinking Cate Blanchett is going to speak English with a German accent in the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull because Jones tends to go after Nazis, but, of course, the bad guys are Russian this time

THIS MOVIE LOOKS SICK!! I CANT WAIT TO SEE IT
  • Hello friends, countrymen, and fanboys alike. Before you read this review let me start by saying that its only fair that you WATCH THE FILM BEFORE YOU MAKE AN OPINION regardless what anyone says. Bear in mind I am a HUGE fan 1st (spent 2 grand getting an exact replica outfit from the real outfitters from head to toe - whip and all for the premier) and critic 2nd here. Now, with that said I must be completely honest and admit that today is (sadly) a dark day for movie fans the world over. The reason I say this and not simply "Indy fans" is because whether you are inclined to agree or not - few series in the history of film making have been as memorable, classic, exciting, thrilling, groundbraking, and even inspiring as Indiana Jones. Therefore being an exemplarary standard to set the precedent for what a real "adventure" movie should be, Crystal Skull has (unbelievably - and though it hurts my soul to admit it) fallen way too short of its predecessors. In what seems to have been one of the last hopes of the few remaining untouched, golden series ever it's unfortunate to see that even Spielberg has now managed to sacrifice his own masterpiece adventurer under the all too popular summer blockbuster bus. What begins as a wink and nod to the good ol days quickly takes a turn for the worst to what I can only describe as a big mess. The CGI is too blatant and intentional. Certain newcomers (Winstone and Hurt) seem either frail or even unnecessary. Scenes of nostalgia feel fake and stale. The plot seems to lose direction and is far more of a stretch than what even Indy fans are used to. I mean, it almost seems as though they took a storyboard, threw random objects at it and whatever stuck became the movie. While it does have minor glimpses of humor and pizzaz and Ford does his best to keep the party going, this film spends more time trying to find itself then just letting us enjoy our old Indy. As a fan I feel that 19 years was a long time to wait for another Indy film but on the same token I feel as though it was plenty of time to come up with a better offering than what feels like a movie that was quickly put together, polished with special effects, packaged, and rushed to audiences in time to cash in for summer. Better than the mummy? Cooler than pirates? Sure, but this is Indiana Jones guys c'mon!!! David Koepp was this the best you had in the 'ol noggin my man? really? No Atlantis ideas, fountain of youths, nothing? Why could'nt they wait even just one more year (might as well make it an even 20), build a better script, and come out with a solid movie? Yes, a sad day because this means that even the best of directors (Speilberg), actors (Ford/Blanchette), and favorite Hollywood icons (oh Indy... the pain) are not immune to the greedy sickness overtaking what used to be a medium for true entertainment satisfaction but instead quickly becoming nothing more than a numbers game. My fedora will never look quite the same...

I watched the 12:01 preview as well. My mom took me to see Raiders when I was 7 years old and have been an Indy fan since. To the true fans, you may be disappointed but I saw some good in the film. The story was just poor and the end was an abomination. Kate Blachett was not a good villain. Although she is a good actress, she was nothing compared to Belloq, Mola Ram, or Donavan. Great villains can make or break the movie. Furthermore, the movie was a bit too hokey. I thought Temple of Doom had hokey parts such as the raft out of the airplane but surviving an atomic bomb by hiding in a fridge is over the edge. The movie dragged in some parts and it was hard for me to stay awake. In my opinion, Spielberg and Lucas wanted to focus on a "new age" idea of aliens and gnosticism and abandoned good mythical treasure ideas. You will get a few laughs in the movie and the car/motor cycle chase was a great action sequence but that's about it. Indy being old didn't bother me at all but the should have kept the saga going a few years after Last Crusade. If you're a true Indy fan, you will have to watch it but be prepared to think "Worst Indy Movie EVER!"
  • maxwell
DONT SEE THIS MOVIE!!! IT IS TERRIBLE.... GEORGE LUCAS RUINED A MASTERPIECE YET AGAIN
  • Sarah Sherman
Ok....so I grew up with the Indiana Jones movies...they are classics...I was so excited to see this one...I normally don't go to the movies, just wait till they make it to On Demand or buy the DVD...but I just had to see this one in person...WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY! I feel like I need to go watch the first 3 just to restore my faith in Indiana Jones!!! Don't get me wrong...a true Indy fan will have to watch it, but be prepared for a major dissapointment! And, seriously...the plot, or lack thereof, was pointless...the ending was ridiculous...the entire point of the movie was so Indy could pass the torch to his long lost son Shia(or whatever his name is) ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! No one will be able to replace or carry on the Indy name. I was very dissappointed...the beginning 20 minutes or so of the movie was the best part. Sure, it was entertaining...but it WAS NOT an Indiana Jones Movie...and I expected so much more from an Indy movie...not to mention from Speilberg and Lucas. Well, now I'm off to watch the real Indy movies...gotta keep the faith.

... I'm not trying to bash the series, I loved Raiders of the Lost Ark, but this is just too much. The theatre was honestly silent the entire duration of the movie. All the parts that tried so hard to be funny failed horribly, and the action scenes just didn't make sense. Overall, one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time.

Don't bash this comment until you have actually seen the movie for yourself. And if you havent, I urge you to invest your $11.50 and 2hrs somewhere else.
  • I watched the movie last night, and I seem to be conflicted. I don't agree that the movie was horrible as most of these posts seem to think. I genuinely enjoyed it. You have to go in realizing that it is a different Indy. 19 years have gone by. Yes, there are some unbelievable moments (the refridgerator and the monkeys), but in my opinion they were no Jar Jar. It took some getting used to that Harrison has aged that much, and yes, there were some bad acting moments, but replay Temple of Doom and try watching it with someone who has never seen it before.
I personally found the plot of this one more believable. This could be because I was raised in a house where we had hypnosis sessions on the living room couch where we regressed abductees. There are many more documented witnesses to the crash at Roswell then there are that Jesus walked on water. There are numerous times where acheology leads to UFOs. It does not surprise me that Speilberg would love that this movie goes in that direction. It was set up that Indy was privy to some of the most top secret things that the US was hiding in the past. The 1950's was the start of the biggest coverup in the world. If you think about it, there is no other place Indy would be then right in the middle of it. As far as Indy being used as a spy, the other movies were prior to the US involvement in the war. The government already had used Indy in the past. If we had a man who had recovered the Ark and drank from the cup of christ, don't you think we would use that person in a special way during WW2?
I do wish they had never stopped making Indy movies, so that there would not be this gap, and we could have watched Indy evolve slowly. It would make this movie easier to palate. And I do agree that The Last Crusade was such a good cap on a trilogy, and it remains my favorite. Just like the Star Wars prequels, it is almost impossible to please the old die hard fans. I think younger people will find this movie very entertaining because they are not comparing it to legacy.
  • matthew
i have got to say this movie was exactly what hollywood needed. Most people don’t and probably won’t realize that this movie tapped into more truths about the secret history of the world that has been lost to the ages than any other film before it. this movie covers so many mysteries that could lead us back to the truth of where we came from and how we got here. they pulled out all the stop as far as whether or not all the oopaa’s are concerned, but who cares, it was great, and with any luck this movie will shift the masses into researching about this hidden history and wanting to know more. It had never occurred to me until tonight, but it seems as though speilberg and lucas were both inspired or activated by some alien power which motivated them to make movies. if u think about it both of there careers were launched off of there fascination with the alien link. the movie hit really close to home in the respect that i also am deeply fascinated with the ancient alien interference that constantly pops up in antiquity. I have had a script going that is part of a trilogy that i have been researching for for years and just today all this synchronicity was happening that was telling me to not give up with my dream. one of the characters in the end of the movie says in the end, so much in life is lost to waiting, and he is right. thank u mr. lucas and mr. speilberg, your movie spoke to me and inspired me to light a fire under my ass and get my movies made. someday i will be at the round table with u. *****

I'm a huge fan of the Indy franchise and was ever so excited to see this film and......dissaointing to say the least. Gearge Lucas has ruined it again, I mean come on it's Indy meets E.T for God sake. And the flying saucer at the end was just a complete piss take. Action and humor were good in the first hour but that's about it. They should have made the 4th Indy 10 years earlier with a completely different storyline not this Crystal Skull Alien crap!! Indy should be an advneture film not a fuckin sci-fi!

This movie sucks. Think "Temple of Doom Part II." They should have stuck to the Nazi/Biblical Artifact formula.
