If you’re not sold on Speed Racer after seeing this 4-minute extended movie trailer from Yahoo Movies, than I think there is no hope. I’ll admit it, I was a total naysayer, but the last few trailer have totally convinced me on this film’s potential. And this 4-minute extended movie trailer features even more crazy action. I almost wish I hadn’t seen some of this stuff on the internet, because it will probably make for an incredible experience on the big screen. Watch the clip below, and share your thoughts in the comments.
The Wachowski Brothers’ Speed Racer hits theaters on May 9th 2008.

April 14th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
If I was a teenager, I would be saying.. ” I cant wait to see that on acid.”
April 14th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Nope. Saving it for theaters. And if I could have a Hunter-esqe rant moment, I thought it would be awesome from the beginning and movie bloggers are lame for changing their mind and hopping on the bandwagon [sorry, couldn’t resist]
April 14th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
i think this movie is gonna do well, the only thing i can’t figure out - is how can a fixed car race be such a looming threat? i’m sure they cover it, it’s just stumping me. it totally reminds me of sonic the hedgehog, but i’m sure im not the first to say that. plus, i really dig matt fox.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
ok let me watch it first..then I’ll reply after.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
From the cars alone I’m sold. On a side note for some reason I want to see Wacky Racers get some love now. Penelope Pitstop anyone?
April 14th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
I just saw it and it’s a goddamn video game. There is nothing amazing about this movie at all. It’s high energy, but the whole thing looks like such a campy cartoon that nobody except Speed Racer fanboys will enjoy it.
And who the heck knows anybody who is a big fan of Speed Racer?
April 14th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
HAHA YES YES YES.
that was fucking siiiiick.
the best part is when Racer X fucking socked that dude in the face midair.
ugh, god i want to see this. thanks again Peter, amazing clip.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
And I know I’m being a post whore right now, but is he fucking ghost-racing his car, Mario Kart style?
April 14th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
damn
DAMN
Everytime!!! Every new trailers makes it better
as Kestrel said… it’s funny how some of the bloggers have really changed bandwagon… from “puked with rainbow” to now “probably make for an incredible experience on the big screen”
haha!!!
I was actually trying to find some pics of the movie last night, and reading pretty much all the articles here… and it’s just funny as I said
can’t wait any longer for this movie!!
April 14th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Awesome, awesome, awesome. I’ve been backing this film since the first teaser appeared online. Anyway, I think the transparent car is the Phantom Mach 4 as seen here…
http://www.moviecarmania.com/prodimages/HW_Speed_Racer_M5983_L.jpg
Not sure who drives it, though.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
It looks like Spy Kids 3-D, but I’ll probably see it. This extended trailer actually made me want to watch it less though.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Yep. This looks about as dumb as dumb can look.
After the mind-numbing ineptitude of Matrix 2-3 the The Wachowski Brothers are now officially the Kings With No Clothes On.
I think it’s safe to say, from witnessing those vomit inducing 4 minutes, that Speed Racer is nothing but a bad idea compounded with horrific Art Direction. This is really what the cinematic world needs! Spritle & Chim Chim FINALLY fleshed out into three dimensions. And I thought we reached the pinnacle of human potential with Scooby Doo’s cinematic features! I was sooo wrong.
Sigh…
Further proof that some people’s “visions” are best left unseen.
April 14th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
I’ve been lukewarm about this movie, but slowly I’ve
become more curious to see the finished product.
It’s going to be a visual rollercoaster, which has me
wondering if I’ll be wow’ed or feeling dizzy.
For the most part I like the cast and I like how
it appears that they’ve kept the spirit of Speed Racer
alive. That is probably the reason it has turned a lot
of people off - live action cartoony isn’t easy to warm up to.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
ifthenwhy, you seem to have somewhat conveniently forgot that they were the dudes behind V for Vendetta, which they made after the 2 matrix films.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
I think by releasing all of these trailers, it shows that they don’t know how to market the film.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
die in a fire.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
LMAO the scene where Racer X socks the other guy in mid-air
ROTFLMAO
i cant wait to see this on IMAX hell yeah!!!!!!!!
April 14th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
I get it, the car can flip.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
I couldn’t make it through the entire trailer. It looks awful, just awful. Bring dramamine if you see it. Is that a pun? I don’t know.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Gordon, you need to at least watch the Car Fu stuff late into the clip… I almost shit my pants.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
@Gaius - Well, uh, of course it’s going to be campy. It’s SPEED RACER. I’m not sure what type of cinematic masterpiece you’re looking for. It’s based off of a campy and cheesy anime from the ’60s. I really don’t think it’s suppose to be very deep.
I do, however, think this trailer was awesome. Racer X punching that dude mid-air was *fantastic.* I like how much these trailers have evolved since the first one or two. I’ll definitely go see it, should be awesome on a big screen.
April 14th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Being this is a “Speed Racer” comment section I wont digress (too much) here..
But to your point Jamie Jay..I’m not convinced “V” was good “because” of the Wachowski Brothers or “despite” them. I didn’t work on the film…but I do know they didn’t direct it, which I believe has something to do with the end results.
That film had many flaws as well…
And to the lovely fellow that asked me to “burn in a fire” (which kinda rules)..I’d retort that I’m just expressing a opinion anout a silly film. None the less..I’m pretty sure the Wachowski Brothers wont miss my 10 bucks on opening day, and that your mom will eventually get around to changing your diapers. Which should improve your dispoition considerably.
April 14th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
pure ignorance. I love it.
April 14th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
My god, mom jokes and videogame comparisons. What has /Film come to?
What next? Naked pictures of Hunter and Michael Bay…TOGETHER?
April 14th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Kids will love this and so will the parents.
Come to think of it, this could turn out to be the Blade Runner of our generation. Be off bleak industrial city scapes! Welcome to the psychedelic realm of acid!
April 14th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Everybody was car fu fighting…
April 14th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
I heard something about Hunter and Bay naked. what?
April 14th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
looks only so-so. a bit cheesy.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
God forbid a Speed Racer film be cheesy. Some geriatrics around here need to start doing drugs just to get their head on right.
I think it’ll miss the kid market, so it won’t do great boxoffice, but every damn teen in the world is going to go see it.
April 14th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
matthew fox is soooooooooo awesome!
April 14th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
did i just watch the whole film in 4 mins? lol im sure theres some chump right now piecing all the trailers together and uploading unto youtube.
April 14th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Matthew Fox is SO fucking hot!!!
Racer X pwns just about anyone else on screen. I hope the sequel is about him.
April 14th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Speed Racer makes his trademark “Aaaaah” exclamation right before he says this race is full of cheaters…I loved that part….that and when Matthew Fox smirks after punching out that racer.
April 15th, 2008 at 5:37 am
sweet candy coated bliss!!!!!
goddam this movie looks like the most fun! i can’t wait for the summer to get here. thanks again for posting this.
April 15th, 2008 at 7:19 am
well ifthenwhy, i think you and these other two fellows need to stop flaming, becuase it makes you all look pathetic, especially those looking through these posts looking for insightful material.
everybody was car-fu fighting, i think im gonna have to go ahead and make a video of that to put on youtube.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:13 am
People, people, Speed Racer was a campy Japansese cartoon from the 60’s so they decided to carry that theme into the film - colors and all. Heck “Dick Tracy” had the same vibe and it did rather well back in the day. Take the film for what it is…..a summer thrill ride. Every film that comes out these days does not have to be reality-based(sheesh). Even if u don’t agree the film will do well u gotta admit it would be worth seeing in IMAX, fan or not.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:49 am
bjslade2, i agree with most of what you said except your last line. I’d flip it and say, “even if you don’t agree the film is worth seeing u gotta admit that it will do well.” I think kids will looooooove and it’ll have a pretty cool toy licensing deal.. but it’s ok that i dont want to see it.
April 15th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
Wow that is the worst acting since the last three Starwars.
April 15th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Physics? Pshaw!
Looks like fun though!
April 15th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Sorry, but this movie looks dumber than a sack of wet hair. Guess that is what happens when you throw that much money into developing a movie based on a cartoon that was monumentally stupid.
If I wanted to see crazy colors and dorky car designs I will take some shrooms and break out my old Hot Wheels.
Plus, with ever rising prices on food and fuel, folks may get more picky about going to the theater by the time this comes out.
April 15th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Plus, the first time I saw a still from this movie it was of Hirsch in his racing helmet. My first thought was “Why does Jack Black have a ping pong ball on his head?”
I can’t be the only one.
April 15th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
You people must not have been around when Tron came out. NOW people say it was lame or something like that, but in ‘82, it was simply mind blowing. This has the same quality. You need to take this as what it is…a film that is hopefully entertaining. Spend your bucks at the theatre, and make a decision when you see it on the big screen. Bet you will be impressed with it.
Oh yeah, the Phantom Mach 4…Speed at point has no idea that Racer X is his brother, Rex. He’s always looked up to his brother with awe, and that’s exactly what is going thru his head…it’s not enough that he’s beating his opponents, he needs to be on the same level or better than his brother. So he’s racing his “dead” brother’s image, he’s throwing out there what Rex would be like if he was there… I just wonder if that last bit in the trailer is real (Speed finding out that Racer X is his brother), or imagined by Speed…? I’m thinking real, as the costume looks like Racer X’s…
April 15th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
I hope this is better than the Thunderbirds movie from a few years ago. Speed Racer was one of my favorite after school cartoons when I was a kid. Here’s hoping for the best. Go, Speed, Go. MaHaGoGo!!!
April 16th, 2008 at 11:11 am
If only real cars were that much fun!
Yes, I was a Speed Racer fan boy as a kid, and I’ll go into the theater with an open mind. It looks as if the makers wanted to nod at the toon aspect of the original, while adding the thrill of modern, state-of-the-art CG, and that’s really okay with me now. At first I was hoping for a more realistic approach, but realizing that no REAL cars could ever hope to pull off the stunts that the original series laid down, and the new movie obviously expands upon, I’m really alright with the semi-realistic world Speed Racer lives in.
Have fun at the theater, but remember you have to drive a REAL car on the way home! ;)
April 16th, 2008 at 11:31 am
That main “actor” overacts and the dialogue is crap.
I’ll still watch it for the effects though.
April 17th, 2008 at 2:50 am
There’s ‘films’ and there’s ‘movies’. Blade Runner was a film, in that it was more of a mental, thought-provoking sort of thing. Speed Racer is a ‘movie’. I mean… yeah, maybe there’s some extremely deep and sophisticated film here, and they’re just showing us the ten minutes work of action, but somehow I doubt it. So passing judgement on it using the same set of criteria as you would for something like ‘Schindler’s List’ doesn’t really work. It’s not trying to be that sort of movie. It’s just trying to be a movie where you can turn your brain off and have fun with a cheesy plot and high-energy action and effects stuff.
I have to say that some of the images of the cars all mid-air and flipping around in slow motion with dust and smoke billowing all over the place just looks amazing, and beautiful. I didn’t think I’d like this flick when I first saw some of the stills for the characters and frames of the movie, but seeing this stuff in motion is just awesome.
April 18th, 2008 at 8:43 am
This look so bad, so fake, it SHOULD be a joke.
April 19th, 2008 at 8:44 am
With the mass appeal, the stars, the writer-directors, the stunning visuals, the marketing and the merchandising…
…I think this could end up being the runaway hit of the Summer!
April 19th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
I’m not sure about the runaway hit of the Summer, but they’d better already have boxed up plenty of X-box video games, because this could be the biggest selling video game ever!
April 21st, 2008 at 5:58 am
its hard to believe the original series of this was inspired by viva las vegas(the film) and goldfinger and that means those wondeful machines in this trailer wher basically inspired by chapparals and elvas and chevys(if you look at the mach 5 it looks like a chevy from the back. and the racing is a combo of drifting,60’s sportscar racing, and a hot wheels megafantasy. i only wish the fia would have this kind of racing.
April 23rd, 2008 at 11:27 am
This is a long over due movie. As a kid with no tv access because of big brothers and sisters I had to watch speed racer cartoons at friends house. This movie will be the biggest movie since Starwars. Special affects are excellent. The cars are awsome. The mach 5 looks just like the cartoon and they added a prototype in the begining I never seen, that was cool. You wont like this film if your square or lame
May 3rd, 2008 at 11:25 am
Awesome? Not from what I’ve seen!
This looks like a marketing-driven bastardization of what they THINK Speed Racer is about. Emile looks to be completely incapable of pulling off his part (John Goodman looks to be an EXCELLENT pic for Pops!), and I don’t get where the John Woo-esque slo-mo gunfights are supposed to be reminiscent of the original.
AND WHY CAN WE SEE RACER X’S FACE?!?!
This show was about a kid who loved racing, and his amazing car, and this looks to be one more over-hyped Hollywood embarrassment like the Hulk.
I wanted this to be awesome, as I have been a life-long fan, but nothing I have seen so far gives me ANY hope it will be pulled off.
