Darren Aronofsky’s Riverview Towers

Darren Aronofsky

After The Fountain failed to perform at the box office (likely due to marketability), I was worried that Hollywood might have lost faith in writer/director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream). Good thing that isn’t true, because Aronofsky will prove himself as one of the best filmmakers of our generation, I’m sure of this. Aronofsky is doing post production on The Wrestler, and is set to go into the ring with Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter.

And now AMC has hired Aronofsky to develop a new drama series called Riverview Towers. The show will revolve around a family that moves into an apartment building with paranormal activity. Sounds intriguing. Unfortunately Aronofsky doesn’t have the time to pen the pilot teleplay himself, and the network has hired John J. McLaughlin, who wrote Aronofsky’s upcoming film Black Swan. Aronofsky will serve as executive producer. Patty Jenkins (Monster) is in talks to direct should the pilot get picked up.

Sounds interesting. I'm a big fan of his work, even though Requim for a Dream is probably the most depressing movie I have ever seen. It always makes me feel like crap after watching it, but any director that can trigger that kind of emotional response from me is cool by me.

Even though I haven't watched professional wrestling since I was a kid I will not miss Aronofsky's The Wrestler, but I'm more excited for The Fighter.

The Fountain is great for so many reasons but I still feel like Aronofsky is over-hyped. I'm not saying that he's a bad or overrated film maker, just that there seemed to be a buzz around him from day one that hasn't quite been lived up to (imho).

The Fountain is the closest he's come so far to the genius that's been touted around him but I think it would be much cooler if everyone just let him do his thing and see what comes out, rather than anticipating something that's going to change the face of film forever each time he coughs out an idea.

'Requiem' and 'Pi' are both Original/Innovative, but 'The Fountain' is a COMPLETE Matthew Barney rip-off IMO.

If you're going to give Aronofsky so much credit, why not the Artists he rips off?
  • Wow
Well Pi and Requiem were amazing achievements in film but The Fountain was the WORST movie I have ever seen. I would rather watch North over and over.

You people are full of shit. The Fountain is awesome.

Like Fincher. I always look forward to whatever Aranofsky does.

    M&Co,

I agree, but rabid fanship is something that's out of his hands or anyone who's in that position. I do think he's very talented. And Hollywood always seems to mess with his work and he ends up having to with what they give him. It's why he's trying to push himself more to the surface with these new films. So he can get to work on more of the stuff that makes him tick.

It was also lame that the studios didn't allow him to insert commentary into the Fountain dvd release. Which you can download as an mp3 off his website now. I don't expect the end-all-be-all from anyone.

But given Darren's resume, I expect to be "fucked with" and he does an excellent job of doing so.
