Why does Hollywood still make spoof movies? And why are people still stupid enough to go see them? Moviehole reports that Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the guys behind Meet the Spartans and Epic Movie, are now in pre-production on a SuperBad spoof called Goodie Two Shoes. Yes folks, you read correctly, a SuperBad spoof. My first thoughts were: Why? What’s the point? and Please, Why don’t you guys stop making movies and get a job in construction? But maybe not in that order.
Goodie Two Shoes will film in Louisiana from April 28 through June 6. The story follows a “group of friends who go on a life-changing adventure” but like most recent spoof films, the “comedy” won’t be limited to teen sex comedies. The casting call sheet reveals plans to spoof the upcoming Will Smith Superhero comedy Hancock, Sex and the City the movie, and Mike Myers’ The Love Guru. The duo is also on the look out for other look-alikes to play Jessica Simpson, Justin Timberlake, Prince, Flava Flav, Dr Phil, Angelina Jolie, Paris Hilton, and Michael Jackson. Remember back in the day when a spoof movie just stuck to the genre/topic it was spoofing? Someone needs to explain to the spoof genre that it is not, and will never be Saturday Night Live. Better yet, someone needs to take the Spoof film out back and shoot it in the head.
Discuss: Should Hollywood retire the Spoof genre?

Horrible Idea
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Ok, I have to say it. Watching spoofs is worse than watching films like Wargames 2 or Lost Boys 2 or any sequel to any old film because those films, at least HAVE a plot. Seriously, STOP IT.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:11 pm
I can only guess this will be filmed where I live, it’s where bad movies come to film for cheap.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:11 pm
[Provided this isn't some retarded 'Day after April Fool's Day Joke'] Holy crap. Spoofing UPCOMING movies? What is this world coming to.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:13 pm
i think if someone “retired” the two that keep making the movies we should be fine. But just to be safe throw in the chaps that make the saw movies too.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:14 pm
This is just stupid. I thought the point of spoofs was to ridicule otherwise serious movies. Some third rate rip on Superbad certainly wont be funnier than the source material it poking fun at, therefore i think the entire project is pointless. More likely than not they are just trying ride Superbad’s coattails and turn a quick profit by balatantly mimicing the movies style.

@ peter
you’ve been able to make a name for yourself in the film and internet community, and we’re all pulling for you guys & slashfilm as you climb your way to the top of internet movie blogging stardom…with that said, now that you’ve got some connections can you PLEASE pull some strings and get Freidberg & Seltzer to uh, disappear (if you know what i mean)? c’mon pete! we need these two guys to be sleeping with the fishes ASAP! i cannot believe they are allowed to make films, let alone share the same air as us! yer our only hope pete, please make it happen!
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:23 pm
i realised how dumb these spoofs were when i saw the trailer for one of them and they were spoofing borat.
borat. spoofing…borat.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Until the movies start to tank these idiots will continue to
get the greenlight on these poor excuses for film.
I think spoof films are actually worse than reality TV
though not by much, both kill brain cells.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Give it a fucking rest already.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Spoof movies are a waste of theater space and it boggles my brain that people can still receive financing to make those awful movies.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Someone should just go ahead and make “Spoof Movie”.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:45 pm
By the way…the absurdist/spoof genre both started and ended with Mel Brooks.
You show me one joke in any one of these “[Insert Genre] Movie”s that’s even remotely funnier than, “Hey, where da white women at?” or, “Evil will always triumph over Good because Good is dumb,” and I’ll give you my left nut.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Mel Brooks work will always be remembered and these MTV shlock college movies won’t be.
In another 10 years from now another retarded generation will emerge and they will recycle this idea with whatever popular films are out during those periods. It’s like Disney animated classics to dvd but for the “Bro” generation!
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Outside of Brooks, the first “Airplane” and “Kentucky Fried Movie”, has there been a good spoof movie? Hell, even Brooks shit the bed (in my opinion) with that horrific Robin Hood parody.
I think a spoof movie can still work. It just takes being smart, which apparently is a commodity in short supply with Friedberg and Seltzer.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:53 pm
LOL I love how the word comedy was in quotation marks, perfect.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Dave,
Even Brooks not so popular stuff is still 10 times better than the hit n’ run style jokes found in these modern spoof films. They just take what they can and throw in cheap one-liner hits and jump around from movie theme to hop actor situation at the moment.
I have a hard time believing theres going to be a “smart” spoof film anytime soon. These are just “quick buck” movies with no originality behind them. The fact that I’ve seen marketing groups try and pair these messes with the likes of Blazing Saddles or even Young Frankenstein? Come the fuck on.
Keep the Dane Cook stuff away from those films.
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:22 pm
This string of spoof movies is making me angry. Unfortunately they seem to be making money otherwise they wouldn’t be making them. I think as the movie going public we should start a nationwide boycott of dumb spoof movies until they disappear.
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Doesn’t spoofing a comedy defeat the purpose?
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:30 pm
@ Everyone
Anyone here a fan of the 1980s horror spoof Student Bodies? I was pretty surprised how good it was and it made Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving seem a little less cool afterward.
Recommended if you like ’80s horror / wasting brain cells. I believe it just hit DVD.
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I’m not sure if many people consider the Austin Powers movies “spoof” movies, even though technically they are, but those are the only new spoof movies that have been any good. Though, I haven’t even seen Epic Movie, Scary Movie, Meet The Spartans, etc.
but I still thought all the Austin Powers movies were hilarious.
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Fuck Hollywood.
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:41 pm
The only thing that’s going to show these people how shitty their movies are is a spoof movie that spoofs on spoof movies.
Also torture or something, I don’t know.
I wonder how well these movies do outside of the US. It has to be a cultural thing, comfort in stupidity or something along those lines.
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Um, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t “College” coming out in August? I fail to see how a spoof (at least the way these jackasses do it) is any different than a retread.
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
I am still shocked at the amount of people that go and see these movies. Every time i go to the theater and there are a bunch of people in front of me buying tickets to “Meet the Spartians” or “Superhero Movie” or whatever is out that weekend, i just think to myself…. “these people have the right to vote in this country?”, and i get sad. But then i go home and watch the movies that they are “trying” to make fun of and i feel better…
April 2nd, 2008 at 2:03 pm
I wish someone would just hire my to write this script. I could make it funny. These Epic Movie/Date Movie clowns are garbage. They’re NOT FUNNY.
Oh well. Keep making ‘em, I guess. They’ll just throw around a 15 million dollar budget and get their 32 million dollar return. Why not, right?
April 2nd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Hunter,
I loved Student Bodies. I hope one day they will release it on DVD :(
April 2nd, 2008 at 2:28 pm
I was watching Superbad this morning with the audio commentary on, and strangely enough Jonah Hill asks “If this movie becomes popular, do you think they’ll spoof it?”, while the rest of the guys go on to say how they’ll do it themselves in “Shitty Movie 3 & 4″. Kind of funny to listen to that and read about this in the same day.
April 2nd, 2008 at 2:59 pm
@ Captain Awesome,
Amazon says it’s due on DVD June 3rd. You can also get the poster for $9.

@ Matt:
Yep. Super Bad itself spoofs typical teen comedies… but so what $$$
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:04 pm
oh my god, finally!
Thanks for the good news Hunter :D
April 2nd, 2008 at 7:39 pm
stop these guys! stop bad cinema - read this and learn how…
http://www.boxofficepsychics.com/2008/04/02/friedberg-and-seltzer-must-be-stopped-and-you-can-help/
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:24 pm
This isn’t “bad cinema”. Spoofs help to define genres. What makes a film “teen movie”? What makes it a “horror movie”? Those elements are blatantly exploited in spoof films. Tons of papers have been written on the backs of spoof films, especially within the last decade. It’s a quick buck for Hollywood. No one is holding a gun to your head and saying “SEE THIS MOVIE”.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:24 pm
These guys really need to be stopped. PLEASE DAMMIT!!! PLEASE STOP THEM!
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:40 pm
they shouldnt retire but try to maintain some dignity
and dont spoof a great comedy like superbad
April 2nd, 2008 at 11:13 pm
I mean, the spoof genre isn’t what should be brought out back and shot in the head–the makers of such shitty spoofs are responsible for such inane stupidity. Can someone with even half a brain make a spoof for once?
April 3rd, 2008 at 4:51 am
spoof movies shouldn’t be made for twenty years
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:12 am
With the barrage of remakes and spoof bullshit, it’s like buying tickets to see a band, but when you show up, it’s just a cover/tribute ripoff.
I hate this crap.
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:59 am
We need to go Anonymous/Space Monkeys on these guys. Seriously. The studios are going to keep handing them money as long as their films remain profitable. And the general population’s still going to zombie-walk to the multiplex every time one of their cinematic abortions comes out, no matter how retarded. The only thing that’s gonna stop Friedberg and Seltzer is straight-up sabotage.
