“Closer to 50!”

Remember when we reported last week that Keanu Reeves flicked his hand dismissively at the notion of all sequels? Well, we lied. Actually, the Internets lied. Sort of. Reeves talked to MTV about a second sequel to his amazing Bill and Ted’s filmography following 1991’s Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, and said he remains stoked on headbanging in a phone booth with co-star Alex Winter aka Bill S. Preston, Esquire but not until they’re 50. Also, there might be a bathroom stop in Bummerville because Reeves says a remake is on the horizon…

“I hear they’re doing a remake,” Reeves said of the movie that launched him to fame. “[Alex Winter and I spoke] on the phone the other day [about it]. We’re great friends.

“The most serious we ever got was a few years ago,” he confessed of a hitherto unknown third film. “I had once mentioned about doing it when we were 40. Now maybe the only shot we have is to do it when we’re 50.”

Winter and Reeves are both in their early 40s, which is unfortunate because another sequel could probably be a big hit and I’m all for Valley Speak making a brute force comeback to the well-quaffed ire of Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere. Which reminds my ego: I once threw a Bill and Ted’s party at a log cabin in Miami complete with a phone booth stuffed with unmentionable antics and a massive UM football player dressed Socratically who dragged a keg onto the street, sat on it, batted others away, and nursed the tap like a goat teat. Wyld Stallyns, get it together and go for the trilogy, and bring William Sadler. [Belch]

Requisite Alex Winter Update: Alex Winter has directed a Big Pharma-comedy called We’re Here to Help starring Alan Rickman (Hans) that is due this year. Go Winter!

Bill and Ted’s Remake Update: Apparently Moviehole has gotten wind of the remake, and they report it will likely go straight-to-DVD. The gist? The “phone” is “funkier.” I’m guessing this means cell phone > phone booth. (LAME.) The new Bill and Ted are 10th graders. They meet snooze-worthy historical figures like Ghandi and Calamity Jane. Remake has fewer “Whoa”’s. (LAME). “Cool and hip” references aplenty including a “we’re going to miss The Dark Knight!” scene. Wyld Stallions? No, this time it’s the “Atomic Gorillas.” (LAME.) Worthy? The site says it mostly depends on who they cast. Bummer.

Discuss: Do you miss the “phone booth?” Who had more gnarlitude, Bill or Ted? Are these movies smartly stupid or stupidly smart?

Sequel rather than remake. I would want Winter and Reeves rather than 2 new people.

i think its cool as hell that B&T is still important to reeves. the guy remembers where he came from, & that can be rare in the film industry. this would seriously be a big film if it ever gets made. i'd like to see apatow, kevin smith or jason reitman do the thrid one. as for a remake...i think it's too soon & i'm suffering from remake burnout. i agree with eric, sequel yes, remake no, or at least wait - especially if there's gonna be a third.

i live in CA & love it to death, but hollywood is taking our recycling policy way too seriously...wakka wakka wakka.
  • fanboy d
if they remake that movie i will go ape$#!+
  • Meli
I'd be onboard for a sequel, but definitely not a
remake! I don't want to see two other guys taking
    on the roles.

Growing up in the OC San Dimas is only up the freeway
and there were many the summer as a teen going to
    Raging Waters.
  • Lizzy
Man... it's OBVIOUS Reeves was joking! There are sites already saying he is out of a job because he wants a B&T sequel! The guy doesn't need it and WON't be doing it. But the character has a soft spot in his heart and he won't be saying NO for all his fans in a crude way. But it's clear he was joking, as when he said he would reprise Ted in a mid life crisis when he turned 40. What more can he say, when every damn interviewer ask him the same question? It was at 40, now it's 50, two more years and it's 60. Never will happen.

    @ Lizzy

Can I borrow your Keanu Joke Radar?
  • Meli
LOL! I knew it's be worth holding back on Lizzy comment.
  • PAT
Hunter I can read you like a book... they'll make the sequel and then after they release a trailer you'll cry and scream that the film it's printed on needs to be torn up and run over repeatedly with a skateboard because it looks so cheesy ala Lost Boys 2 ;]
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ Pat

Sounds like I'm more of a lad mag than a book. Flip to page 621, I've got a message for you.

Actually, Bill and Ted's 3 is the only movie that gets a "skateboard pass" in the Oughts imo. The quality trajectory for movies released this decade with a skateboard scene is a flatline. Btw: I requested that you run over Lost Boys: The Tribe using an uncle's jeep not a skateboard, but in your case, a skateboard is prob suitable.

How bout the sequel to Buckaroo Banzai that they promised us at the end of the credits 24 years ago? How much longer is the film community gonna have to wait god dammit!?!?!
  • Gordon
jonny, Buckaroo Banzai is already back, in a prequel -- as a comic book: http://www.moonstonebooks.com/banzai.asp

As for a movie sequel, keep holding your breath...
  • RyRy
Hunter, i love the Hans reference

  • what assbags! remake bill & ted with a cell phone?! hey, while we're at it, let's remake roots and use hasidic jews instead of blacks, and make another dukes of hazzard movie, using a daihatsu in place of the charger. sure makes sense to me. NAUGHT!
  • Remember Dumb and Dumber? It was a brilliant movie - despite the low brow humor. Remember Dumb and Dumberer - it was univerally loathed and we all vomited in our mouths just a little. If they remake it I think we can expect much of the same. Its time to stock up on some listerine.

Make a sequel - I'm a die hard fan and would gladly shell out $9, 10, 12, 20 - whatever the current ticket price might be
  • That's Wyld Stallyns. Neither word is spelled according to the English language.

Also, I've heard speculation about both the remake and the sequel (I hang out over at billandted.org, the official fansite), and I woudl much rather see the sequel than the remake. I hope the remake falls through.
  • Sequel = awesome. Remake = vomitous garbage that's being shoved down all of our throats on a consistent basis.

I hate remakes, dammit. What's the point of a different version of an original? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of art? Retarded.
  • Blah
Not too surprised that they're selling out B&T again--I mean, sure, we remember the movies, but they were also had 2 cartoon series, a holy-s#!t-that's-bad live-action series (yes, really--it lasted 6 episodes and was on Fox, natch), comics, action figures, trading cards, you name it. They pimped B&T out for all they could. Why would they change their minds now? It's a shame, but there you go.
  • Lauchlin
Hey, man. The Bill and Ted comic was sweet.
  • sequel. if they ruin another good movie with some newbies im gonna be pissed,
ive herd so much about this sequel/remake and they should stick with the original characters... make it as if the "babes" get captured and they have to go back in time (in the phonebooth) to save them. idk

or what if bill and ted played rufus's character???( r.i.p george carlin)
and then we brought in the newbies??? i smell a oscar!!!
