Sacha Baron Cohen is F**king with Ben Affleck

Sacha Baron Cohen as Bruno

Sacha Baron Cohen’s alter ego Bruno has recently been causing trouble in Kansas, shooting the follow-up to Borat, titled Brüno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt (now try to say that five times fast). FilmDrunk reported earlier this week that security was put on red alert when “a German film crew member” started “stripping down to tight shorts and dancing in the lobby of Wichita Airport” (see video of this at the bottom of the post). A church in Kansas also reported that a strange European camera crew showed up to their Easter play with the on air personality in chains.

Mike Walker of the National Enquirer reported the following on the Howard Stern Show on Thursday: Ben Affleck called comedian friend Sarah Silverman after completing a sit-down interview with a person he was told was a “very famous openly gay fashion journalist”. Ben called the interview “the weirdest sit-down he has ever had with a reporter” explaining that the interviewer’s (wholm he refered to as an “idiot”) first question was “How Do You Like Niggers?” After a stunned silence, Silverman asked Affleck “Was this guy’s name Bruno?” Then and only then did Affleck actually realize that the whole thing was a gag. There is no doubt that this interview will be featured in the final cut, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters in October 2008.

As for the airport incident mentioned in the first paragraph, arbafart69 was able to catch some of the scene on camera. Is that Bruno?

Discuss: What other celebrities do you want Bruno to interview?

  • I wanna see Steven Brill call Bruno a cunt and then challenge Bruno to a game of Star Wars Trivial Pursuit.
  • Jonny, LOL
  • C
    Tom Cruise.
  • Captain Awesome
lol, can't wait to see this.
  • se7en
How did Ben Affleck not know who BRUNO is??!
  • yeah
    that's totally him!!!

@se7en: there's still many people who don't recognize him.
I have to say that he's good at not being recognized, but if you live in europe, then you've seen all of his shenanigans and you would probably recognize him in every fashion.

he should totally go for president bush.

I love how sascha cohen has been joking the whole world, just hope more people will get the message.
  • Lame. Lame. Lame. Lame. Lame. Horrible. Unfunny. Ridiculous. Pathetic. Stupid.

SBC needs to DIAF. He takes advantage of people, and has no regret about it. He's not funny. Unfortunately, most people don't agree because they wouldn't know funny if it hit them in the face with a pie.
  • Brian
Frank is a loser who thinks Little Nicky was funny. If you don't like this humor then keep it to yourself you lame piece of trash.
  • gocitizen
I seriously doubt Afleck didn't know. As soon as Silverman's name is mentioned, you know it's just part of a scam of a scam - trying to give a scene in the SBC movie some credibility. It's just a reminder that a Bruno film is a few years too late.

Of course, even contrived, SBC can be pretty funny.
  • Brian, you're a rude little boy hiding behind a keyboard. Tell me, little boy: If you were at a party discussing this movie and someone you'd NEVER MET said he thought this movie would be lame, would you turn to him and call him a "lame piece of trash"?

    If so, you must:

    A. Have a lot of friends.

    B. Get your ass kicked a lot.

I happen to agree with Frank. Cohen takes all the bad of "Candid Camera" (making fun of unsuspecting people) with none of the good (the good-natured "reveal"). He DOES take advantage of people not only in "punking" them, but he goes on to make millions off his antics without (AFAIK) sharing a nickel with the same people who made his movie so "funny."

    Vic
  • Captain Awesome
Why would anyone at a party be discussing this film there in the first place?

Screen Rant stop going to lame parties.
  • Funny. I know you didn't miss my point. You're just refusing to acknowledge it.

    Vic
  • Brian
If someone went "lame, lame, movie sucks, unfunny, ridiculous, it's unfair to the people being interviewed" - I would turn to them and call them a lame piece of trash. My friends don't encompass losers such as yourself who don't have a sense of humor.

Also way to come to Frank's defense. I doubt i'm the scared little person behind a keyboard when you feel compelled to sign "Vic" after all of your posts. You must be some type of master blogger. Keep going after these movies and people who find them funny, its noble work your doing.

    - The man
  • Well if you truly would do that your momma never taught you any manners.

To personally attack someone for voicing their opinion about a movie that you have no vested interest in, is petty and disrespectful.

I guess only YOU are entitled to YOUR opinion, eh?

    Typical.

    Best regards,

    Vic
  • Kenyon
    im guessing your american..

god your type are annoying. coming onto an article your not interested in only to whinge and argue at the people who ARE interested in it.

have you ever seen the sun?
  • A friend of mine runs this site, so I read it, not that it's any of your damned business. And yes, I'm American - and in the American spirit I will say: Kiss my ass.

    Vic
  • Jamie Jay
I personally think Sacha Baron Cohen is pretty damn gutsy for attempting what he's done.

And yes, I do realise that some people may not find it funny, but then again, not everyone has the same sense of humour. Does that really make you better, Frank "most people don’t agree because they wouldn’t know funny if it hit them in the face with a pie" whatever-your-lastname-is?

Why do you think that your interpretation of 'funny' is worth and/or correct? Jesus.
  • Captain Awesome
    Anyways...

I think this movie will be good, I watched his show religiously and loved when he did Bruno in the mid-west states and even The Great ole South. You could see people sweating while they were being interviewed.

I was impressed he made it out alive most of the time.
  • Ghost
Why would you watch his show religiously?

I'd love to see how they'll market this.
  • sean
Is it just me, or does he look a lot like Andy Dick in that video?
  • Brian
Vic - his opinion said that it wasn't funny and people who found it funny "wouldn't know funny if it hit them in the face with a pie." (which, ironically, isn't a funny reference). So I guess that doesn't count as a personal attack because you agree with him?

Way to come to his rescue though superman, you are a real /film hero. If you want to post witty remarks make sure they are sensible first.

    - King Kong
  • He should interview Tom Cruise. Is that too easy of a target?
  • This is my last word on this: There's a big difference between:

"Unfortunately, most people don’t agree because they wouldn’t know funny if it hit them in the face with a pie."

    and:

"If you don’t like this humor then keep it to yourself you lame piece of trash."

If you can't see that, I feel sorry for you and anyone who has to interact with you in real life.

    Vic
  • Brian
I feel sorry for you b/c i am guessing you are some old, lonely man who is trying to take some moral high-ground against other people blogging on this website.

Calling me a "little boy" is just as bad of a personal attack and for some reason you feel the need to argue with me. Also, way to make rash generalizations about me based on the fact of one wall post with the infamous "Frank the Tank." It's funny to me how you can say i'm hiding behind my keyboard when you run a blogging website (one far inferior to /film I might add) for a living.

    - Lame piece of trash
  • Guys,

I should have stepped in earlier. Let's please keep this conversation on topic.

    Peter
  • Captain Awesome
    jonny,

lol, thanks for that clip. One of my favorites.
  • Captain Awesome
And to answer Peter's question. I think a good celebrity would be someone like Oprah, or even Dr. Phil. Someone from one of those camps.

I could see Dr. Phil happening before Oprah. She'd have too many people trying to screen him and thus the joke would be ruined.
  • Dan
I'm sure the studio shuddered at the N bomb.
  • alex
if you dont think sbc is funny youre prob a religious freak, or have no friends or sense of humor, or are a closested loser over 40yo.
  • Kyle
he should have filmed this around/before borat so less people new
  • No
to all the people saying how he 'takes advantage' of the unsuspecting public: youve obviously never seen any of his work. the reason its so good is that he doesnt need to take advantage of anyone, his characters are so well developed that the people he interviews completely set themselves up to be made fun of. he didnt force those stupid rednecks to sing along to "throw the jew down the well", they all did it of their own free will.
  • Frank, Hollywood was built on people taking advantage of anything they can and not regretting it one bit. What world are you from?
  • chrisjo
By the way this sounds it seems to me that Sacha is being rude to people to make others funny. Some comedians make jokes of the people that watch them out in the audience and everyone laughs because it's not them being made fun of. I personally don't find Sascha's comedy funny, but that's not to say he is bad at what he does as an actor. He was very funny in Telledaga Nights and had a great little part in Sweeney Todd, but to show up to a church on Easter Sunday in chains...honestly, he should at least send them an apology letter. I'm not saying anything public, but just a personal appology or something. And just because people do take advantage on anyone and anything to get ahead in "Hollywood" doesn't make it right. It is free in this country to express yourself but not free to ridicual take advantage of someone's lack of understanding so you can show the world that they're stupid when they had no idea they were being set up humiliation. People laugh at them but not SBC's character which should be the center point of the humor to the movie. It is about him, after all.
  • dan
    Hi All ,

    I agree with 'No'
There is nothing evil about exposing somebody's true nature - it's only unfunny when you sympathise with those unsuspecting members of the public and so called celebrities who so often show themselves up to be quietly quite right wing . I think ridiculing people who are narrow minded to the point of ridiculousness is something that needs to be done on this scale in order to affect change and erode some of the deep rooted and ignorant ideologies that so many in the modern world still hold true . To do it through comedy and bring it to the worlds attention in this way I think is comendable . I think there is much more to his comedy than just vindictive jokes .

    @Screen Rant & Frank

Cohen's TV series Da Ali G Show is a hit, his movie Borat is a hit, his next movie Bruno is gonna be a hit. Cohen is a comedy genius like no other. Cohen's style brings something fresh to the screen and I can't wait to check out this next film that is in the works. There's a lot worse things going on in this world than some people being taken advantage of. Just so you know, there's people that are taken advantage of in much worse situations than the making of a movie.
  • AD
    Well said 'No' and 'Dan'.
  • beel bob
Cohen is a comedic genius who is totally from left field. I would like to know where he got the idea to do this type of comedy from. Also I don't think he would target Tom Cruise bc he gets made fun of enough as it is, Cohen seems like he wants to break stereotypes down by exaggerating them to a hilarious degree.
  • I can't tell. It looks like Sacha in the video. But the mannerisms seem off. He doesn't move like Sacha. I don't know. Anyone else think it might not be him?

All I know is my face is covered with hot acid and it's burning my flesh...

    what?
  • Graeme Phillips
I think it's a shame he involved a Kansas church, but the church in question wasn't Westboro Baptist Church (one of the Christian community's biggest liabilities). I think Sacha Baron-Cohen is an annoying smug liberal who just can't seem to accept that the decision of many Christians to oppose homosexuality is their life choice. Also, he can't stop playing on stereotypes of southerners. However, it would be hilarious to see him interview them.
  • Doug
Grame Phillips said: "I think Sacha Baron-Cohen is an annoying smug liberal who just can’t seem to accept that the decision of many Christians to oppose homosexuality is their life choice."

    SBC can accept it.

He just highlights how ridiculous it is when people are so strongly prejudiced against certain groups of people whether it is against gays, jews, muslims, etc.
  • SBC is sometimes funny, sometimes not.. but I get it that he's trying to expose prejudice and lighten the atmosphere with comedy, much like Richard Pryor tried to do concerning racial prejudice... you gotta make em laugh first...

some of his stuff is lame and unsettling, can actually make you squirm; thankfully we can fast forward the dvd.. but sometimes it's also quite brilliant, that's the nature of comedy.

from Lenny Bruce to Richard Pryor to George Carlin, even the Smothers Brothers, most of the people who TAKE OFFENSE to comedy are the very ones who are being parodied or satirized from someone with a point of view, usually attacked as BLASPHEMOUS LIBERALS. It's funny how we end up taking comedy so seriously... you either get it (I get Woody Allen) or you don't (I don't get Mel Brooks).

Much of it seems to be personal subjectivity and cultural taste. But remember: Angels fly because they take themselves lightly.

    .. the Jman...
  • lizard lover
You and your dimwit buddy Frank are so off the mark... The people SBC interviews make themselves look bad. As far as whether the films are funny or not,
well, there really is no accounting for taste
  • Jason
This movie sounds like it's goin to be fucking hilarious.
