According to the Daily Mail, rather accomplished 17-year-old British actor Thomas Sangster, whose credits include Love Actually, Nanny McPhee and appearances on the UK’s Doctor Who, is nearly a lock for the lead title role in the 3D motion-capture trilogy Tintin from Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. Kid’s last name is pretty cool and, if the rumor proves true, will compliment the oncoming fame and boatloads of dough.
Earlier this month, actor Andy Serkis, who will portray Captain Haddock in the films, dished that Spielberg’s installment will go first in September for a 2009 release, presumably followed by Jackson’s and then another sequel presumably from a top tier and still unchosen director.
Based on the decades old children’s comic created by the late, singular-named Belgian artist HergĂ©, the title character is a young, somewhat aloof investigative reporter whose sidekicks are an affable, liquor-loving terrier named Snowy and one very pronounced wave of a cowlick. Together they solve mysteries and avoid close calls. Tintin’s friend, Captain Haddock, is a brawny sailor with a penchant for alcohol and wisecracks.
Discuss: Anyone a fan of Sangster’s? Is this a good choice for the role and who did you envision?

That kid is 17 years old?

@ D1
Yeah that picture I’m pretty sure is from Love Actually which was in ‘03. So add 5 years to that.
And I have no idea who would be a good TinTin, just the haircut throws off any kind of idea you’d have for him.

@ D1
Click the Daily Mail link for what I’m guessing is a slightly more recent pic. To be honest, Sangster seems to be perma-young.

I think “Basketball Diaries” era Leonardo DiCaprio would best suit the role of Tintin, but I’m just not sure of anyone right now. Maybe even Romeo or Titanic Leo, but not too much past that.
Sure, Sangster is cute, etc. but I have to think he’s far too young to work effectively. Tintin shoots a gun, can beat up thugs, etc (he’s physically imposing enough to handle adult criminals) and while he is a young journalist, has to show that he is competent enough to work on a story and be a world traveler on his own, not someone who is in high school and has his mom do his laundry. He should look younger than what we generally see as “college age” characters in movies (ie played by 25-28 year olds), but a 19-24 year old actor who looks young is what is needed. Maybe the redhead from Harry Potter.

This is bad news. Love Actually is a horrible film and this kid id the worst thing about it
March 22nd, 2008 at 1:58 pm
He’s had a lot of minor roles but he pulled them all off pretty well.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:01 pm
he’s done alot of supporting roles and pulled them off quite well.

I cannot believe that that kid is 17 years old. I saw him in some episodes of Doctor Who last year; he looks exactly the same as he did in Love Actually, only a little bit taller and with a slightly deeper voice. Huh. 17. Who would’ve thought?
Age aside, though, I think it could work. The kid can act in my opinion, so I’m not worried.

I didn’t realize the character Tin Tin was so young. I had always thought he was early-to-mid-30’s. Therefore, I definitely thought Simon Pegg.

Give Tom a break - he has had a few major roles in films over the years and is a damn fine young actor. He will shine in this role and finally this could be hie big break into stardom.
