Shock Till You Drop received a tip over the weekend from a source at 20th Century Fox who claimed that a sequel to last December’s generally hated Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem is a “certainty.” A second sequel in the battle royal sci-fi horror franchise would be rather surprising, as AvP-R didn’t reach $50 million domestically, though it made about $130 million worldwide. However one might expect sales of the DVD, set for April 15th, to be rather healthy. As aforementioned, after much boasting by visual effects wizard brothers Colin Strause and Greg Strause, their film still sucked about as much as the first AVP flick from Paul W.S. Anderson. The source didn’t clarify whether the Brothers Strause would return.

The question here is whether this potentially landmark franchise can ever retain the promise that existed in so many fanboys’ heads before it became a cinematic reality. Twentieth Century Fox has to realize at this point that the key factor to making an AVP film that can reach $100 million domestic (and a third film still could) is the director. At this point they need to go with a well known action director rather than a young hot shot with visual acumen.

While some of the thrill is gone after two outings, especially amongst the non-geek mainstream, an injection of class and a detachment from the prior two films could still make considerable bank. I doubt they could get Ridley Scott at this point, but that’s the type of talent they should aim for. And this isn’t about AVP so much as rebooting the Aliens and Predator franchises, neither of which are particularly strong go-to’s right now. As seen from the boffo grosses and insatiable interest in I Am Legend, moviegoers want their dark sci-fi, so do it right or don’t bother.

Discuss: Can you ever get excited for an AVP film again after the first two?

  • Not another one! This sucks.
  • Personally I thought the second one sucked alot more than the first one, which was also sucky, but in a good way. If that makes sense.

Yes, I could potentially be excited for a third one, but it would have to be attached to something to be excited about - a GREAT story idea, a GREAT director, an interesting twist, something. Otherwise, why bother? I love Alien and I used to love Predator. It would be cool to see those come back to something again. Do I believe it can happen? Not really. The studios haven't done much to instill a lot of confidence that they can handle these types of things, have they?

I just saw this movie over the weekend. I knew it would suck, but this movie was beyond bad, made-for -TV, schlock.

How could a Hollywood Studio take 2 of the most interesting, cool, original sci-fi, movie monsters ever, and ruin their cinematic potential? Well, that's what they've done over the last 4 movies...

    sad.

And there are even some comics with interesting storylines that have never been used as well...
  • Robert
    No.
  • Jonathan
I always thought the first one was a very low brain popcorn flick (aka when Im lazy and don't feel like a movie that has to be watched every seconds I like this movie), and I was fairly surprised at how much I liked the second. Definitely was better then the second. Now that they learned their lessons, I would really like to see what they can do. You're right. With a decent director, this movie COULD be good enough to watch more than once or twice.
  • Kapit
I will only be interested if the Aliens and the Predators are actually in the movie. I don't give two shits if blonde pizza delivery boy wants to bang the blonde chick. I want to see Aliens fight Predators, with the humans being hosts for the Facehuggers.

Is that really too much to ask out of an Aliens vs. Predator movie?
  • Captain Awesome
    Jesus fuck, why?!?

It's the new MTV Dracula vs. The Wolfman serials.
  • FR
    I also watched it today.

My God, that was fucking horrible!
I think they should just give up on this whole AvP franchise. Let's be frank, the premise of this franchise is retarded in itself, leave alone the movie adaptations which are even worse.
And directors of both movies are hacks! Who's next in line? Uwe Boll!?

They should stick with Aliens, and Predator as separate entities! Honestly, I think Predator 3 is where the money's at, IF they manage not to fuck it up this time.

I agree with Kapit. Less Humans, more coolness.
  • OSR
Less Humans more killing and more blood .

and if a human is in the movie they must die in the movie .

they should make the next one take place on the Predators home planet.
  • Jackie/B
The best thing about the two different franshises are that they let it all hang out. The blood, the gore, the language. That is what was geat about this movies. The problem for the AVP franshise is meeting this and surpassing it. They should read the comics and get back what was once a couple exciting series.
  • I don't get it at all, has no one in hollywood ever read the AVP comic books that started the whole idea?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_vs._Predator...

Its seriously one of the best Sci Fi Comic Book miniseries ever, and its an amazing use of the worlds that the stories exist in. I'm amazed at how hard it is to fuck up such a great idea.

I really don't understand where all the hatred for the second one comes from. The first one wass a terrible example of the franchise, but the second delivered what it promised. Children were killed, babies were killed, pregnant women were killed, the "love interest" was killed. I could have done without the bullcrap "teen drama" as well, but they gotta have something in their to appeal to "non nerds". The series was never meant to be "Artisitc", it is a popcorn franchise through and through. I suppose it could have been carier, since I would definitely classify it as an action movie more than a horror movie, which is what a lot of people want I think. I am a huge Alien and Predator fan, and I would love for them to make more, but I would love forthem to be good too. Maybe they can get James Cameron? The vibe in Aliens would be perfect for it. and they really should go with the plot from the novels, that would be the best choice.

i think at this point, they would have to resort to making the movie more vicious. It should concentrate on what it is. It would be nice to see some alien and predator back story show up more prominently. Maybe harken back to the days of the hunt, when predators would hunt the aliens for sport, and humans should be depicted as cattle. maybe at one point a human uprising can occur, but it should end with their defeat, so it wont be too cheesy. maybe they could have a colonized planet that was taken over by aliens, and the humans realize that the reason it happened was because the predators let them loose in preparation for some kind of game or hunt. that might be cool.. maybe it would make a better game. i dont know
  • big daddy
i havent seen the second one yet, but from what i gather, it takes place on earth, in present time, which to me is kinda boring, and doesnt make for a good plot
  • Brandi
I would rather the Aliens VS Predator movie be set in the same year as Aliens. I mean with more Aliens, and the Marines shooting them while the Predators stalks them like on the first Predator film.
  • Brandi
Oh, and it's on another planet instead of earth.
  • Johan
Many interesting and differing views indeed. Personally, I thought the first Alien vs Predator movie outbeat the second one. Not really action wise, but overall the story was a lot better in the first movie. I agree with those of you who say that if another sequel is made there should be more Aliens and Predators fighting and more gore and humans dying. Don't make it into a damn love story either. I want non-stop action all the way. I also enjoy the suspense part in ALIEN - that I think they should add in as well. As for a potential setting for another sequel I say definately NOT on Earth! This is a sci-fi franchise and sci-fi IMO means SPACE! Either on a USCM space tanker, like in ALIEN or ALIEN IV, or as someone else pointed out, on the Predator's homeplanet. I also think they should rely more on the Comic book stories or even look at the PC Games that came out about a decade ago. I used to play Aliens vs Predator all the time and thought it kicked ass! It would be awesome if Ridley Scott or James Cameron came back and were involved with this franchise one more time. Either an Alien 5 or Predator 3 would be awesome to see because I think, especially to the Alien movies, there are still some unanswered questions. Anyway, if they are going to make another Aliens vs Predator they REALLY need to take it more seriously...

Not sure why there are so many negative comments. I love Alien Verses Predator movies. The second Aliens movie was my favourite, with Sigourney Weaver. I heard the next movie will be on the Aliens home world. The first two Aliens movies were definitely the best. One was with the ship Nostromo and next where they had to rescue th colonists.
Next the first Predator movie with Arnold was incredible.
When combining the two action movies if the story line or plot is good, can really result in an excellent movie.
If it is on the Aliens home world I hope the Predator will have another new set of weapons. Half of the time everyone is wondering just what technology the Predator will use. As long as the story line can be one where everything with weapons is new with the Predator.
Next the Aliens have to be shown with their unique movement which actually makes them look like an Alien. -After this a box office smash for sure.
  • AVP fan for life
I hope fox will make a 3rd avp film it should be on the alien home planet or predators planet like predator going to aliens planet to exterminate them for ever or alien somehow manages to get on predators planet and breeds an makes alot of predailens and there's a huge brawl
  • Jay
Personaly i liked the first one the second one is anoying cause they just blew up with a dam nuke!

The predaliens were cool but kinda corny.
I say you can mix to simple sci fi and make a good one but not complecated ones like star wars and star trek but i think thet should trie the fly vs some other deadly sci fi monster that would be cool.

The thing is i was just about to by Alien VS Hunter by just looking at the cover it looked like a sequel to requem but i was yet to find out it was a crumy copie and rip off.

And i Agree with AVP fan for life they should make a third where they all get extermanted but that could sort of clash with the original alien aliens alien 3 resurection and so forth.

I think I am one of the few out there that loved the first one (Anderson's AVP). Just enough story and some cool ass action. Being the geek the geek that I am I thought the 1-on-1 battle between the Celtic Predator and the Grid Alien was worth the price of admission. With that being said Requiem was disapointing. It had its moments (action-wise) but they totally cheesed out on the supposed character development. I also had an issue with the lighting. I agree that it should be dark but there were some action scenes where I could'nt quite tell what was going on.

All that aside, I am for a third one. Being the action junkie I am I am hoping for all out action and using humans as fodder/ face hugger-feeder. I would settle for now dailouge and 90 minutes of Pred/ Alien ass kicking.
  • newt
I want a story focusing on the predator homeworld, and their society...maybe subtitles?
  • Tony
cool movie.. the bedst movies, ever made..
  • probably would have been a lot better if i could see what the hell was going on was this film totally done in the dark for a reason??????????
  • Predator
It has to be done on predators planet!
