“Happy day.”

If you eagerly went to the local comic book store on weekends throughout the ’90s you no doubt recognize the lil’ white dude above named Fone Bone. Created by artist Jeff Smith, the Bone comics remain one the industry’s biggest DIY success stories, published independently from 1991 to 2004. Warner Bros. has purchased the rights to the comics and is planning a feature film. It’s undecided whether the film will be animated or live-action or a fantastical mixture of both. Dan Lin, who is also attached to a He-Man movie, is on board to produce with Smith executive producing.

Winner of numerous awards, the Bone series follows a family of three bald, white, cartoonish characters named Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone on their adventures throughout a fantasy world populated by predatory creatures. They are all wistful to return to their homeland, called Boneville, from which they were kicked out, and are taken under the wing of a human gal named Thorn Harvestar and her grandmother. They learn of a mysterious evil force called Lord of the Locusts that pervades the land.

What makes this project promising is that it’s original, quite mature source material and Smith is known not to compromise. Many years ago Nickelodeon Films was set to make an animated Bone feature, but Smith balked when they suggested that it take on a child-like tone, complete with songs by Britney Spears. Chalk this news up to a big W.

Discuss: Cool news to you? Who should voice (or play, if applicable, lol) the Bone cousins?

bone is a fantastic property. fans have waited for a movie adaption for a long time but i'm sure we can wait longer as long as it's faithfully translated. it would be great to see this 2-D animated drawn in the style of the book. i don't know if it'd capture the magic if were live action.

anyways, go jeff! keep control--don't let warners man-handle this into nonsense like they are with 'where the wild things are.'

studio execs = stupid, stupid rat creatures.

I couldn't agree more! I read all the Bone books and I really liked them. So when I heard it was going to be a movie, I got even more excited! Plus believe it or not, Warner Brothers is my favorite movie company! (despite all the flops.) But even though not all it's movies were the best (Pluto Nash, Whiteout, Catwoman) I think this time, it's going to change. Bigtime!
  • Captain Awesome
Interesting. I hope they pick a cool medium. Maybe something like what's being done in the Where The Wild Things Are film?

I don't know, I just hope it's not an all-cg thing. I hope for something a bit more creative for this.
  • TBH when I saw the picture, I thought you were gonna tell us they were making a film about " The Shmoo"... but then I remembered the Shmoo didn't have arms.
Thats cool I guess.... Bone was a good comic and all. Should be a real trip to see it on the screen, Hope they keep it classic animation and not CG Shrek style... Cuz I'm sick of it.
But frankly, I think there is a huge over site that a film version of The MAXX isn't being optioned. If Sin City can be made...why not Maxx?

Didn't mean to derail the topic Hunter... It's just something that's been bugging me for a while now.

    Back on topic... yay Bone!

I'm trippin' that it's been 7 years since he finished

really exciting news today! Bone is a classic. I say bring back the whole cast of LOTR's (Bone has that epic vibe going for it) to do voices... :)

    @ Captain Awesome

Yeah, WTWTA came to me as well when I heard the news. I can't imagine a live-action Bone, but the fact that they're considering it shows an openness to epic fantasy. It wouldn't be cheap.

    @ redandjonny

I'm all about discussing a Maxx feature film anytime. Possibilities are endless and the MTV show def put it out there past comic fans. That is a film that could really connect with teens and adults alike. If Bone is successful, you know providing that it gets made, I could def see The Maxx next in line. With the success of comic book movies, these types of fantasy comics are the next step in bypassing the ubiquitous monopoly of 'the capes.'
  • I get the feeling we're gonna have to wait to see how well Watchmen does..( or is done ) before we see more geared towards adults super hero films. Sin City was probably a bad example on my part, cuz there are no superhero's or costumes in it. MAXX might not wear a cape, but he does have that purple suit and mask.

So Z.Snyder better get it right... cuz there's a lot riding on this.

    :P

    @ randj

There is a LOT riding on Snyder's Watchmen, I agree, and I am still not sold on it being a huge hit. While the film's costume images were so-so but faithful, they run the risk of being seen as corny by the mainstream, like a serious Mystery Men.

However, I wouldn't lump Watchmen in with Bone or The Maxx as it's a play on traditional comic book (movies), whereas Bone and Maxx are high fantasy. 300 is a better example, and Conan is another (obviously Maxx and Bone aren't battleground epics tho). You are right in comparing the level of awareness amongst non-fans to Watchmen, I feel.

There is a lot of potential for comic fantasy films and I think audiences are getting hungry for non-city-set comic movies without knowing it. One of the reasons why Vaughn's Thor is high on my list for genre films is because it would veer away from metropolis-set action and pile on the epic ancient mythology/fantasy. Comic films should give us set pieces and worlds we haven't seen before, but more and more they are getting a little stale (insert ___ ___ versus planes, trains, motorcycles et al).

    This is excellent news.

I resigned myself to this not happening for quite some time. Why? I had an opportunity to speak with Jeff at a signing event a few years ago. I asked about the possibility of a movie and he said "It won't happen for a long time".

I am confident that Jeff Smith wouldn't risk destroying his property with a sub-par product.

Voice Actors? Hmmm. I'm hoping the video game hasn't perverted the voices I heard in my head. I remember when I first played the game, the voices threw me off a bit. Phone had too much of a Pooh voice.

    Phone - Paul Giamatti
    Phoney - Steve Buscemi
    Smiley - Jack Black
  • WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!

That is all, thank you. =)
  • ^ What Joe said.

This is amazing news. Jeff Smith cares a lot for his work and I'm sure the end product will be amazing. I really cannot wait.

Holy shit yes. And I really hope that they keep it 2-D animation style and let Jeff control the work.

I would LOVE for it to be traditionally animated (maybe CGI for the big set pieces). As for voices, I think Danny DeVito should do Phoney. He needs to be a real curmudgeonly type. For Smiley, it needs to be someone who can pull off a goofy voice and still have emotional range. It would probably be better to have a real voice actor, rather than a celebrity. Tom Kenny perhaps? And Fone Bone is the everyman protagonist. Have someone like Tobey Maguire do it.

It would be sweet if they could get James Earl Jones to be the Great Red Dragon. Also, I think Patrick Warburton and Jack Black (saw his name up there somewhere) would be perfect as the two stupid rat creatures that Fone keeps running into.

That's all I can think of right now. Replies?
  • Eric
I like Buscemi and Black as Phoney and Smiley, but Paul Giamatti as Fone Bone? More than that, though, I like Rabbi's suggestion for Tom Kenny, as well as the idea to hire professional voice actors rather than celebrities who dabble. Even though Lawrence Fishburne as Roque Ja or the Great Red Dragon would be cool. Too bad Johnny Cash is unavailable for the latter...

Tom Kenny, Billy West or maybe Michael Sinterniklaas as Fone Bone
Laura Bailey or Heather Morris as Thorn
    Tony Oliver as Smiley
Richard Horvitz as Phoney and maybe one of the stupid, stupid rat creatures. The anti-quiche one. His 'Hello, small mammal' would be the right mix of funny and threatening.
Steve Blum as the Great Red Dragon or Lucius, deeper than normal of course but his classic laid-back delivery (for the dragon).

Rose is someone I could never cast. For the rest, I could always put actors to the voices the characters had in my mind, but I've yet to hear someone who could play old but strong and fluctuates easily between Rose's various emotions. The best I've got for now is Candi Milo with a toned down Madame Foster-type voice or Wendee Lee because I know she's vocally versatile and can play a bad-ass without overdoing it. If Mary McGlynn can do old, she would also be a good choice because she does commanding well, which will be important in the third movie.

Not that it matters. I'm sure Ben Affleck will be Fone Bone, Jon Heder will be Smiley, Betty White will be Rose, Cameron DIaz will be Thorn and David Spade will be Phoney. It'll be entirely CG, there will be jokes about a Starbucks in the rat creature camp and Pauly Shore will play Kingdok. The soundtrack will feature every song you never wanted to hear again and it'll be shoved so far down everyone's throat with incessant advertising that knowing what Bone is will no longer be cool. Anything to piss of the fans, eh, Hollywood? And Jeff ''Screw you, Nickelodeon movies" Smith will be found weeks after the premier bound with duct tape in the producer's closet, very very sad.
