Ghostbusters Comic Con

Late breaking news from the floor of WonderCon in San Francisco. The convention program features an interesting tease that features the classic Ghostbusters logo and “something exciting is coming to the neighborhood!” “Look for the big announcement at Comic Con San Diego 2008″.

Could this be an announcement regarding the upcoming Ghostbusters video game? Probably not. The cat has already been let out of the bag regarding the franchise’s video game plans. Besides, on further inspection, you will notice a “Sony Pictures Home Entertainment” logo. The video game is being produced under an entirely different entity. So what could this be about?

Could it be the Ghostbusters 3 computer animated movie that has been in development for a few years now. Dan Aykroyd confirmed the development of an animated Ghostbusters 3 in an interview last year.

“I wrote a script called Hell Bent, Ghostbusters go to hell basically. The premise is that it’s Manhellton. There’s Manhattan and ManHELLton. And if you can build an inter-dimensional phase system so that you can go from one dimension to another. We’ve succeeded doing that and we go to the hell side. Downtown, Folley Square - where the cops are, they’re all blue minotaurs. Central Park is this huge deep mine, green demons there, surrounded by black onyx thousand foot high apartment buildings with classic red devils. Very wealthy. And we go visit a Donald Trump like character - Mr. Siffler. Lou Siffler, Lucifer. So I will say we meet the devil in it. It won’t happen as a live action because Billy [Murray] won’t come on to the live action but he will voice his part, as a CGI animated project. With CGI, and animation, the way these cartoons are done, we can do everything I wrote in that script for a lot less money.”

So maybe the project will be officially announced at Comic Con? Although I don’t understand why they wouldn’t go theatrical with such a release. I have also confirmed with my sources that Ghostbusters is currently being prepped for release on Blu-ray disc. Could that be the big announcement?

Discuss: Do you want to see a direct-to-DVD com puter animated Ghostbusters 3? Or would you rather the announcement be the Blu-ray release of the original films?

If you notice there’s a “PG” sign to the left of the logo.

  2. Gravatar

If there is already a PG sign, that must mean, that the film has already been shown and rated by the MPAA right?

PG is kind of…low these days, back in the 80’s things were able to swing by, but PG seems really low especially for Ghostbusters.

The game will probably get a Teen or Mature rating based upon the violence of the game.

Something seems fishy…Is there a true official announcement regarding this Ghostbusters thing at Comic-con? I thought their would be a more legit and new generation poster announcement if anything. This poster seems really low-key and crappy, like the rating and Sony Pictures logo just got tossed in there.

  3. Gravatar

It’s not a poster. It’s a corner on a page of the official WonderCon program. The crappy quality is because I took the photo with a 640×480 webcam on my laptop.

I think you guys might be right about the MPAA rating. This probably points more towards the official announcement of the Blu-ray release of the movie/series. But that doesnt mean that new added value content isn’t still a possibility. Even indie films have done this. Clerks animated a whole missing scene which was never filmed. Who is to say that Ghostbusters might not do something like this. And it seems to me like the guys have been trying to get this Ghostbusters go to hell storyline out for years now… who knows?

  4. Gravatar

“Something exciting is coming to the neighborhood” for a second had me hoping for a third alternative, such as a themed ride at a San Diego/Anaheim themepark. But that “PG” dooms this idea :)

That graphic is the same design as on my existing Ghostbuster DVD. It’s probably just about the blu-ray release.

  5. Gravatar

It seems pointless to announce the Blu-ray release at Comic-Con and to call it a ¨big¨announcement, but more than likely that´s what it will probably end up being. :(

  6. Gravatar

It’s tough to say what it could be. As far as the “Sony Pictures Home Entertainment” and PG rating is concerned, that image is nothing more than a scan of the current DVD packaging. It could be just a quickie job to get the advertising out there, and the studio used whatever artwork was easiest to get to. On the other hand…

    …plausible theories…

    1. Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 3 on Blu-Ray
    2. The Real Ghostbusters Animated Series on DVD
    3. Ghostbusters 3: Hellbent Computer Animated Movie
    4. Perhaps, just perhaps, an announcement for a real GHOSTBUSTERS 3

  7. Gravatar

Clearly, it’s the announcement of the Ghostbusters Duology on Blu-Ray. Sigourney Weaver already said on Cinematical that a 3rd Ghostbusters is not being made.

  8. Gravatar

    Zap,

You are probably right, BUT from what I understood Weaver’s character was not part of the Ghostbusters in Hell storyline, so she wouldn’t be involved anyways.

  9. Gravatar

That synopsis for GB3 sounds so cheesy - kinda like what the original was going to be before Ivan Reitman came in and cleaned it up.

I’d like to see a GB live action TV show. Get some great writers and a decent budget. Would be awesome.

  10. Gravatar

Peter, she said she had talked to Ivan Reitman recently and that he said it wasn’t going to happen. If he doesn’t direct it, who will? Brett Ratner?

  11. Gravatar

does anyone know a direct quote or reason Murray has for not wanting to do another one? is it his age or something else?

  12. Gravatar

The poster’s background is the same as on the box set containing Ghostbuster’s 1 and 2 on DVD. Definitely just an announcement of the box set coming to Blu-Ray.

  13. Gravatar

I suspect they’re using the packaging because it is what was handy.

In other words, something a touch more interesting than a Blu-Ray release.

  14. Gravatar

(Some of this message rehashes what others have already thought, but I want to run through all possible ideas that came to my mind.)

The program shot seen at the top of this page provides a few *possible* clues. The first thing you notice is that the image is the (lame) 2005 DVD cover art, which was reused for the PSP UMD version. On further inspection you will also notice a “Sony Pictures Home Entertainment” (SPHE) logo (lower right corner) and an MPAA “PG” ratings logo (to the left of the No Ghost logo). If these are meant to be there, and related to be “BIG” announcement, then it rules out a few things… but I’ll run through them anyway.

    – My first thought is GB3, but pretty much all involved have shot that down time and again, so I wouldn’t place a bet on that. Unless it’s meant to be direct-to-video, the SPHE logo shoots this down as well.

    – My second thought was the new video game, but what more is there left to tell us about it? The only unknown is what the Peter character’s likeness looks like, and unless they have Bill Murray in person at the con to unveil it, I don’t think that’s such a big announcement. Everybody already knows about the franchise’s video game plans, so that’s no big secret. Plus the SPHE and PG logos shoots down *anything* having to do with the game.

    – The Real Ghostbusters finally coming to DVD. The SPHE logo fits with this, but the PG logo shoots it down.

    – The Ghostbusters 3 computer animated movie that Dan Aykroyd talked about in an interview last year. If it’s direct-to-video, then the SPHE and PG logos would fit with this. That would also mean that the final cut of movie was made and already screened for the MPAA. Somehow I doubt this is the case. On that note…

    – I think the MPAA rating points more towards the official announcement of the Blu-Ray release of the movie(s). That doesn’t mean that new bonus content isn’t still a possibility, but given Sony’s track record, I wouldn’t count on it. In my opinion, THIS IS THE ODDS-ON BET!!!

It’s already been reported by those in the know that the real Ecto-1 and Ecto-1A cars will make an appearance at the con (they’re currently being renovated), we can only hope that some of the Ghostbusters cast/crew members will be there as well. It would be great if all four Ghostbusters showed up: Bill, Dan, Harold, and Ernie!!!

It’s times like this that I wish I had the money (and the desire to deal with the transportation) to travel cross-country again to make my first ever trip to ComicCon. It’s been 10 years since I was last in California, so it’s about time I go again. Maybe make it a decadal thing.

  15. Gravatar

I just want a ghostbusters 3……i mean come on….i’m restoring my own Ecto-1…..they know there are fans just waiting for it….i know it would be so huge in the theaters…..lol

  16. Gravatar

Why would they tease us with a big Announcement just for a blue ray release. I’m not saying it is a 3rd Ghostbusters, but it must be somthing more exciting than that!

  17. Gravatar

I’m hoping the announcment will be one of these:

Real & Extreme Ghostbusters DVD sets

    Ghostbusters 3 is a reality

Ecto-1 & Ecto-1A are going to be put in a Hollywood museum.

    A new Ghostbusters TV show

The Ghostbusters will get their own Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

  18. Gravatar

Perhaps it’s a new line of ghostbusters toys based off of the original 2 movies.

  19. Gravatar

I’m hoping it’s something more than just a release on blu ray. The DVD releases were a let down and seemed pretty cheap considering how popular the movies are, maybe they’ll try and make up for it?

I’ve been hoping for a new GB movie for years, but the guys are all getting on now… There is a new Indy movie though and Harrison Ford is 60+

  20. Gravatar

It is probably just about Blu-Ray and the Ghostbusters Game being released on the same day or something.

The Ecto-1 is susposed to be at Comic Con with Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.. so we’ll see.

  21. Gravatar

Yeah…If I were Sony I would start all that hype for a blu-ray release. It probably isn’t a third movie, but has any other company ever held a press conference to announce the release of 20 year old movies coming out on *beep* blu-ray. Like I said before they might announce the date for the blu-ray at the show, but it will be with somthing a little more exciting to fans! The games release date has already been annouced for October 21 2008.

  22. Gravatar

The Blu-Ray release will have plenty of “Fan” features.

I can’t say much more than that.

  23. Gravatar

Its Ghostbusters 3 in CGi, you fool will see your all wrong wehn June 2008 and summer of 2009 is when it will be released. Dan even said it would and hes’ not a liar and neither and I so just stop lieing cause Im getting sick of it.

  24. Gravatar

    Yeah. Well you are dumb.

  25. Gravatar

Your dum! The CGI movie will be here next Summer of 2009. Think before you write, because I’m getting sick and tired of this. It makes me very upset when other people say that the videogame is GB3 and it isn’t. #1 It doesn’t show the GB2 logo or a GB3 logo it shows the origna GB Logo from 1984. From videogamesblogger it says that the real cast are reuniting to write for a CGI movie and do voice for the movie and game. The sequel is the two both movies in videogame form. There you go ok so stop saying wrong things because Dan said that GB3 lives and it’s isn’t dead anymore and thanks to Bill Murray we will finally get a GB3 in CGI and the 4 guys in Grey will be voicing for the third GB movie and videogame. It’s 2 Seprate things! Dan wouldn’t lie and neither would I so knock it off!

  26. Gravatar

I’m pretty certain the big news at the Comic Con is going to be … the resurrection of the dead GHOSTBUSTERS comic project by 88MPH. Yeah, I bumped into someone on deviant art and liked his work. He was hinting at something big happening in fall and that I’d find out then. But I had to ask because I didn’t know where to look. He told me he was comic artist working for Tokyopop and that he was working on an official Ghostbusters comic of some kind to be published alongside the game in October. I then realized that the sketches he had of the Egon character looked like the character design of the Canadian (I think it’s Canadian) 88MPH studio back when they were doing Ghostbuster comics. I remember something about the last Ghostbuster comic they were doing get cancelled or shut down or something, even though it was Sony sanctioned (as far as I knew). Or maybe it was that 88MPH Studios got shut down themselves. Maybe it was financial problems. Well, anyway, I think this is one or all of the artists from 88MPH working through Tokyopop instead in order to finish what they started. Seems likely since this is a comic convention. Speaking of which, has this convention already passed or is it still on its way? You know how old these GB news websites are, and it’s hard for me to keep current on these things. We’ll have to wait for San Diego con to come around and find out officially, of course.

  27. Gravatar

Personally, I really don’t think the resurrection of a dead comic should be classified as a “BIG” announcement. I, and I’m sure others, would be disappointed if that turns out to be the case.

The announcement will be held at the San Diego Comicon this July.

  28. Gravatar

Yes, the announcement is Ghostbusters part 3 in CGI.

  29. Gravatar

Sonys let it out of the bag too early lol.

  30. Gravatar

Well its not likely to be the game. Its already got massive support, and was common knowledge months ago. A blu ray version of the previous films could happen, but why announce that at comic con. It’s a possablity it will come out on blu ray at some point because it will increase sales of the previous films, but not sure if a comic con announcement would do it much good, people would just be dissapointed. As for a new comic, i didn’t even know there was old ones, i don’t really like em, to me there just story boards that never make it as a film. (in other words rubbish story lines). but thats just me, there might be millions of people who will find a new gb comic big news, not sure what a new comic has to do with sony though, or what blu ray has to do with comic con, maybe someone else knows that. To me big news would be a new GB3 film release, which would involve both Sony and Comic Con. Will be very interesting to hear what its gonna be.

  31. Gravatar

Ah, that’s too bad so many feel that way about a new comic. Since I’m a cartoonist myself I’m actually extremely excited. But if I weren’t excited about comics, then choosing to be a cartoonist as a profession would have been a mistake for me. :-) I’d of course prefer a live action third movie. I just thought it made sense due to the fact this was a comic convention. Well, can’t wait for the announcment.

  32. Gravatar

I would hope that it is a live action movie. However It will more likely be a CGI one. A live action TV series would be awesome, however I doubt that would happen.

If it’s just a blu-ray announcement, then that would be a huge let-down.

  33. Gravatar

Thank you Sony!!!!!! You said it to me and to the other GB Fans! Listen to Sony because Sony is right. At the Comic-Con they will be showing a teaser trailer to the movie and on the 26th of July after Comic-Con the teaser trailer will be on youtube July26th and i’mlooking forward to that and the movie GB3 in CGI next summer of 2009. My friend from san Diego she works at the Comic-Con and she told me the samething that Sony told me that a teaser trailer will be shown at theComic-Con. I’mlooking forward to that and the teaser trailer on youtube July26th!

  34. Gravatar

Wow, sounds like great news Patrick, hope you’re right. Anyway, I have an update on the comic I mentioned earlier - I know, I know, it’s not the subject matter, but I wanted to make a correction. It’s not a revival of the 88MPH comic, it’s instead an American made manga being made through Tokyopop. A lot of the crew working on the book can be found on deviantart, as well as pages, sketches, artwork, and the completed book cover (check the favourites at cncgb.deviantart.com, which is one of my galleries). It’s looking real sweet. I will admit, however, that I can’t tell who is Ray and who is Peter, which I don’t like. The characters’ distinct personalities and looks as seen in most media should make them instantly recognizable apart from each other… Oh well. I have a good guess on which is which though, but why would Peter wear the Ecto Goggles? He’s never worn the Ecto-goggles… Anyway, really hoping for a live action or CGI movie. I think a TV series would be awesome, but you know they’d crap it up - I mean, come on. Does the new Terminator show, Smallville, Superman and Lois, The Tick (live action), and other shows like them follow continuim correctly, do they have plots that are never cheesy as crap, and do they always stay faithful to the original’s special effects, props, actors, stories, feeling, themes, and etc? And did you know there was supposed to be a live action Star Wars TV series based around Luke and Leia growing up as kids? Yeah, if done right it might be good, but otherwise it sounds … like a potential part 2 of “Star Wars Holiday Special,” and you know how George Lucas was about that… (Ordered all copies to be burnt).

  35. Gravatar

Sony said on this webpage that GB3 teaser trailer will be annouced at the Comic-Con and Sony said that a Teaser trailer will be shown because did you read what Sony said? It’s on this webpage. There are a lot of Cool things happening at the comic-Con and the CGI teaser trailer to GB3 is one of them and the teaser trailer will be on youtube July26th because i’m looking forward to that also. in 2009 GB3 will be in theaters and the Count down is on for 2009 GB3 in CGI!

  36. Gravatar

Ah, just wanted to pop back and state why I remain skeptical on Sony announcing a GB3 during the comicon. We shouldn’t give our hopes up just yet because anybody could just post here under the name of “SONY,” and why post it only here instead of leaking something out on youtube or elsewhere? Anyway, it’s certainly possible though, especially given the repeating occurence of many companies’ excited employees who can’t keep quiet.

I actually believe now that Sony’s “big announcement” is the release of the complete Real Ghostbusters cartoon series onto DVD this fall, as only recently revealed (gbfans.com). However Time Life’s involvement could mean that maybe Sony doesn’t have much to do with this, so maybe I’m wrong. But, yes, hopefully a third GB will be announced instead. The announcement would be somewhat unexpected by some fans (like me) and widely applauded by all.

  37. Gravatar

Only 4 more days and the announcement will be revealed!
Here’s hoping it’s a 3rd movie, however, I’m not gonna get my hopes up.

  38. Gravatar

The announcement will be made on Thursday. There will also be a Video Game announcement at the Panel Discussion on Friday.

  39. Gravatar

Sorry. Ghostbusters 3 has been cancelled due to an online leak.

  40. Gravatar

I am sorry Patrick, but Ghostbusters 3 has been cancelled because of you. It was going to be a surprise, but now that you have ruined it we have decided not to go through with it. Since it was in CGI it was not very expensive and we decided not to follow through with it.

  42. Gravatar

I didn’t do anything wrong so stop blamming me ok. The real Sony told me that I’mn right you are a spam pretending to be Sony and you should be ashamed of yourself.Ghostbusters 3 CGI teaser trailer will still be shown at the Comic-Con and it will be on youtube July 26th and I’m looking forward to that.
