The Box

This Week at NASA has some cool (possibly spoilerish) behind the scenes set footage from Richard Kelly’s The Box. Kelly shot on location at Langley for the last week of filming. Watch the footage in the player below.

“In the footage you will see brief glimpses of some of the (very large) sets constructed for the film in the large-scale wind tunnel, which has never been used in a motion-picture… until now!” says Kelly.

You can also read more about one of the sets, NASA’s oldest operating wind tunnel, which was officially de-commissioned in 1995, on NASA.gov. Seems to me like there are some very strange locations for a sci-fi film which starts off so very simple. Looks like we know so little about the whole story. Speaking of the story, the first official plot synopsis can be found below.

Based on the short story by Richard Matheson, “The Box” stars Cameron Diaz as Norma Lewis and James Marsden as Arthur Lewis, a suburban couple with a young child who receive a simple wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences. A mysterious stranger, played by Frank Langella, delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. But, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world…someone they don’t know. With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, Norma and Arthur find themselves in the crosshairs of a startling moral dilemma and must face the true nature of their humanity.

why would Richard Kelly cast Cameron Diaz? why why why!

because she has star power. Like her-or-Hate her. Cameron films make money.

Plus, I've heard they've been friends since the Donnie Darko-Drew Barrymore days.
  • I agree with Nick - I hate her, at least in a Rich Kelly movie! And the replier, I thought her last few films were flops. She may have been star power after There's Something About Mary, but in the recent year she's been bringing doom to the box office. Kind of like Jessica Alba - all of her like 5 movies in the last year have failed miserably, so I don't know what kind of star power that is...

As for this - if you look at the footage, I'm trying to figure out what in the hell it exactly is?! There's some guy standing on a huge pedestal with green screens all around him and it's hazy. What the heck is going on? There is some very weird stuff happening...

This is why I love Rich Kelly - this could be awesome and dark and full of twists and we have no clue!
  • Diaz hasn't made too many flops. She's been involved in 7 films which made over $100 million dollars domestically, in the last 8 years. That's not a bad track record.

favor: if anyone at /film interviews kelly during press for this movie, ask him if he still plans to make 'the contortionist's handbook'.
  • This story was done by CBS Radio Mystery Theater back in the '70s, and was called THE CHINA BUTTON. From reading this synopsis, I'm depressed because the radio play's storyline had a much more straight ahead, "Watch this, I'm really gonna mess with this guy!" kinda device. What the hell do we need a kid for? As for making it with Cameron...what a waste. Marsden's an adequate choice, but this could have been really cool as a stripped down, low-tech indie flick for a first timer. What a shame. This is gonna blow chunks.

this doesnt strike me as a story that requires extensive sets, im curious where that all comes in.
