I wouldn't be surprised if it won Best Picture - I was kinda disappointed by it because of all the hype, and I didn't laugh out loud much [it was mostly funny dialogue and my friends and I are constantly having hilarious conversations anyways [I'm 16]), but the more and more time goes by the more I just feel... good about it. About the whole thing. It's just movie goodness. I was literally trying to stay awake in Michael Clayton and, if Clooney wasn't in it, I would've. But Juno has everything.

Can't wait to buy it.

No way it will win Best Picture. -- I liked the movie, but when you can't compare it to the other films such as No Country for Old Men.

My views on Juno are well known but to say that Juno is a better film than There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men is almost to the point that it is insulting. I thought Juno was a movie that tried way to hard to be hip and couldn't go 2 minutes without shoving some forced indie crap down your mouth. Whether I'm right or wrong, I'll admit that Juno was a better made film than some of the previous pictures nominated for Best Picture. I also think the screenplay is weak because of the aforementioned problem that I think Diablo Cody was trying way too damn hard to think up each line of dialog but the overall story is again probably better than screenplays that have been up for Best Screenplay in the past.

I can see how Juno could win Best Screenplay but if Juno wins Best Picture that'll be the final nail in the coffin as to my caring about the Oscars (see Heat getting no nominations, DDL losing as Bill the Butcher, Russell Crowe losing for The Insider, etc.)

We have to wait until April!?!?

If Juno wins best picture then I'll eat my proverbial hat. According to Vegas, No country is the odds on favorite to win at nearly a 1/3 odds (-245). Juno is a 18/1 dog (+1815).

If you people really think that Juno can win then you should put $20 on it and if it happens you'll win $363.

Sorry Peter, out of sorts this morning. Maybe your definition of "indie" and mine differ. I misread and misquoted the above statement which is clearly the camp I fall into. I just entirely disagree with your's, and especially the "mini major studio's," characterization of this film. "Indie" is more of a name brand now than a descriptive term. It is an Orwellian word of no real meanining anymore. I know you have to play ball or risk being left out of the loop. And your site depends on "the loop." Knocked Up was more touching than Juno, and far less cloying and precious.

Juno is good but it is evident from the special features that it has the most annoying set of quotes ever. If one more person says honest to blog to me ever I will rip thier head off (exempting the actual line in the movie)

Robert: In fact, from what I understand Jason Reitman spent years trying to get the funding for Thank You For Smoking. In the end, no studio would give him the money, and he got the budget from a millionaire investor who believed in the script. So yes, while his name has value, and while he had a bunch of award winning short films in his background, no one wanted to give him the money. (Juno of course is a different story, as it was one of the top 3 hottest screenplays in Hollywood).

As for the indie comment, Indie film has been transformed. No longer does it mean independent. No film is independent outside of maybe The Puffy Chair-caliber stuff. Whenever you have an investor, you are no longer independent. There is no difference between a millionaire who will front someone $7 million to make a film and a studio. Both are looking at the bottom line. Independent has now come to represent films made for under $15 million. Films made for under $1 million are now termed ultra low budget indies. That's the way it went, and thats the way it is. And yes, most industry analysts agree on these factors.

I guess that is the problem I have with the term. It should just be called "low-budget," because what the label "indie" does, and they are well aware of this I am sure, is lend an air of authenticity and "street cred" where it often doesn't belong. So consumers can think to themselves, I'm no dupe to the corporations. I am real and authentic and I'm stickin' it to the man. I'm raging against the machine, etc. This ain't no McDonalds burger. It has become a deliberate mischaracterization for the purpose of marketing. Just bugs me.

There is indeed a very large difference between private investors and a studio: degrees of creative freedom.

Also, this statement ("Whenever you have an investor, you are no longer independent.") makes absolutely no sense, because everyone gets their money from somewhere.

I saw Juno last night and was not impressed at all, it was a simple story, with a unconvincing pseudo-intellectual 16 year old in the style of a nasal Janeane Garofalo voice - which is far fetched to say the least.
And the film was trying to hard to make me feel like it was indie, and I don't mean independent film, I mean indie rock - which may have played well in the mid-90s but now it's redundant.
So there was definitely flaws in the acting and though I see that the writer tried to keep a low-maturity level with using what he considered trendy catch phrasing such as; "Fav" "Fab" "Dude" and whatever else he could shorten, it failed to be convincing.
In short, I had a hard time believing any of it through out - even with the Wes Anderson style moments.

So I believe it's just like Little Miss Sunshine, the pick of the litter from independent films to receive honorable mention, nothing more. And it's not really surprising high-school kids would like this film, it appeals to their nature, much like 'chick-flicks' appeal to woman by insulting men.

i LOVE this movie!!!!! its the best movie ever and it better win all of the awards its nominated for. if it doesnt then whoever picked the winners is like really really really stupid! oh and i cant wait to buy the dvd!

It wasnt even a good movie, the dialogue coming out of her mouth was so unbelievable for a 16 year old. And its marketed as a comedy, I dont think I laughed once....

While I was in Australia they were filming Love Story (2050) outside my motel. It was cool to see a film being made (even if it was just an indie movie), but I can't really say the title made it sound that pleasant.

A friend of mine and his girlfriend went to Juno and they both seemed to like it.

This 'indie doesn't mean indie, it means low budget' stance is ridiculous. If you mean "low budget" then just say it. Indie is easy to define...made by a member of the MPAA (assuming it's an American film)? Not independent. Made by anyone else? Independent. Really, if your definition means that a studio that's part of Rupert Murdoch's globe-spanning media empire can make "indie" films, your definition sucks, I don't care how many "industry analysts" say otherwise.

For those that declaring that it's not as good as No Country and There Will Be Blood as far as competing for a Best Picture, you're correct.

Seen them all and the other two are by far better films for that consideration.

Though those who use the "it's unrealistic" excuse for dismissing Juno should really take a deep look at the plots of all films. No Country is somewhat far fetched in that a man would actively be walking around with a portable cattle gun. Just as wildly imaginative as Juno saying they shoot babies out of those t-shirt guns at sporting events.

I don't know where many of you get your ideas for what films are supposed to be. They aren't supposed to be accurate reflections of your daily life. I wouldn't want to see you eat Cheerios, go to work or school and do ______ after that. The fantasy element is what makes movies worth going to.

Think Michel Gondry. Yeah alot of people don't "understand" his films, but they're for escaping, not being bowled over by some impossible CGI created disaster.

Movies are for expanding the frame. They're meant to engage your thoughts, make you laugh and yes give you a thrill. With that range you should just go to enjoy films instead of expecting something out of them.

Ellen Page is fanastic in the cool/but not cool teenager role and she plays the whole thing so perfectly. Micheal Cera is perfect, the guy who did the deed but has no idea how he got into this or what on earth to do about it .... the later scences in the hospital are beautiful. And the end song .... with Bleeker and Juno always makes me happy but cry... its also a perfect soundtrack !!!! Juno is a wonderful film ... its 9.5 out of 10 in my eyes.
