Removed at the Request of20th Century Fox

Our friends at the Italian movie website BadTaste have gotten their hands on a scan of the first official artwork from James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi 3D epic Avatar. The artwork supposedly came direct from a 2009 Fox line-up. The official plot synopsis, translated from Italian, follows:

“The story of an injured ex-marine who finds himself involved (against his will) into men colonizing an alien planet. Finally, he chooses to change his battle array, leading the alien race in a battle for life.”

James Cameron’s Avatar hits theaters on December 18th 2009.

Discuss: With a budget estimated at around $200 million (before P&A), Fox is betting on a Titanic sized hit. But can this 3D sci-fi action film become one of the top 10 biggest grossing films of all time?

There is no way that a sci fi film will be able to make Titanic bucks!

This dude isn’t showing jack. This day in age a guy like Cameron is gonna present a 200 million dollar movie with art like that as the final? Come on. This is probably a fax cover letter.

Marky: Star Wars Episode One was the 5th highest grossing film of all time domestically. The original Star Wars is #2, just below Titanic Sci-Fi movies can make money!

Domestic is much different than worldwide. The studio cares about worldwide. And the only Sci-fi heavy film which is not part of a built up franchise (Star Wars, Harry Potter) to make the top 25 films of all time worldwide was Independence Day.

I think this movie has the possibility of making big money because not only will it bring an epic sci-fi story to the big screen (granted I am just guessing this but due to Cameron’s track record and this being his baby for years, I figure it’s gotta be at least good to great if not amazing). Furthermore, the big draw for this movie will be 3-D. Cameron will bring the first big semi-photorealistic 3-D film to the masses when hopefully 3-D projectors will be prevalent in theaters. Even if the movie is just decent people will go to be wowed by the special effects and technology used in the film.

    FOX marketing+james cameron groundbreaking movie+winter release = $$$

The plot itself sounds nothing special. Yes, I agree the bet is on the whole 3D thing.

Nothing ’semi’ about it! Avatar will be totally photo realistic - what do you think groundbreaking technology and 2 YEARS of post production buys you? Photo realism thats what. Oh and the budget will be closer to $250 million plus. It was $200 mil when they were releasing on Memorial Day 2009 - tack on another 6 months of Weta.

Agreed, This is not ‘final’ artwork - but could be an indication of whats to come - note the jungle on the planet…
