If true, this is a bad move. PR Insider reports that Sylvester Stallone is in negotiations with Sony Pictures to revise his character Cliffhanger, er, Gabe Walker, in a sequel to 1993’s Cliffhanger, which grossed $84 million domestically and $200 million plus worldwide. The sequel will be entitled The Dam, which automatically makes me think of the “surefire” pitch that became 1996’s megaflop Daylight: Stallone versus dam tunnel. And, I’m so sure, there are challenging cliffs to hang from on a dam.
“There’s only one man for this job.” - Guy in Hard Hat with Walkie Talkie
Stallone’s Rambo is nearing $40 million domestic, but won’t reach the $70 million heights of Rocky Balboa. Super Bowl weekend seemed to take out a chunk of its potential business, as word of mouth was overwhelmingly positive. Worldwide, the sequel is still rolling out, and the industry already views the film as a success; the press, another success story. As much as I think Stallone remaking Charles Bronson’s Death Wish is uninspired, bookending another of his Golden Oldies, one memorable only for its atmosphere and a bug-eyed villain played by John Lithgow, narrows the scope of his latest comeback and opens up the punchlines.
Does anyone see potential in Cliffhanger 2: The Dam?

I’ll be greatful the day I don’t have to see Stallone’s face anymore. I really almost puked watching Rambo staring at his puffy brotox injected face. That and I can barely understand him when he talks.

You’re tripping der. At this rate we will get Judge Dredd and Demolition Man sequels! haha.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
how about OVER THE TOP 2 while he’s at it…

@ JJ
I’d much rather see an OTT2 than CL2:TD, agreed. Stick to the ’80s material.

I think a remake of Death Wish would be huge. Even though he pulled off Rambo, I think at his age that would be more believable than a mountain climber.
I thought I read he was going to remake The Mechanic though (thats another Bronson movie) ? I cant imagine him not doing a hard R Death Wish. Thats an iconic film and theres a lot politically he could say in a movie like that that would make it more than just another action movie.

NO MORE SEQUELS! PLEASE!

@ moofieman
He is attached to both Death Wish and The Mechanic. Search The Mechanic on this site for further info about possible casting aka Elijah Wood (wtf).

Daylight is off the hook. Stallone killed all the dudes who needed killing, and had nothing left to fight but the friggin’ Jersey Tunnel with his bare hands.
I’m not even kidding when I say I really, REALLY want to see a sequel to Tango and Cash. At this rate, it seems like the chances of that are getting better and better.
February 16th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
@ Max
I agree. I would love to see sequels to Over the Top and Tango and Cash. And maybe Cobra.
Cliffhanger is just sooo ’90s. It’s porn for readers of Men’s Journal.

It’s about time Sly reinvents himself rather than doing roles he has done in the 20th century. He should consider roles he has never done before, like ‘Grandpa’, ‘Grumpy Old Man’, did I mention ‘a junkie’

Please Sly, retire. You’ve had a good run over the years, just go away and leave us in peace.

I’m glad Stallone is still putting out tough guy films. It’s a breath of fresh air, even though they are sequels. Rambo &Rocky are some of the most well known films of all time, so I can understand why he would make more of them…they “work”. We’re not seeing many macho tough guys in Hollywood anymore, and I think we need them, &Stallone is picking up the slack. This day in age, it’s almost a bad thing to be a macho, masculine male, and thats sad. Stallone did a great job with Rocky Balboa &Rambo, was able to get his body is tremendous shape for both roles, and had a good script. It’s ironic, for years, he had one of the best physiques in Hollywood, now that he is getting older (61), and while he’s still an imposing figure, people try to pick him apart and make stupid comments about his body and his age. I can only hope I am in that kind of shape when I am 61 years old.
Sly will always have his fans that will support him, &as for the ones who badmouth him, make totally rude &ignorant comments about him…well they should stick to watching Harry Potter sequels &stay away from the tough guy movies.
