Where Do Cloverfield Monsters Come From?

Where Did The Cloverfield Monster Come From?If you haven’t seen Cloverfield, than read no further as we’re about to enter spoiler territory.

Where did the Cloverfield Monster come from? Japan? The ocean near an offshore drilling site (as hinted by the viral)? Not so according to director Matt Reeves, who supposedly told Film School Rejects that an easter egg within the film tells of the Monster’s origins. Apparently in the background of the footage that HUD had taped over, when Rob and Beth were at Coney Island, “something suspicious” drops into the water.

While I very much believe this subtle easter egg is probably in the film’s final cut, I just don’t buy the reasoning. Beth and Rob’s trip to Coney Island took place in late April, but the monster waited a full month until late May to destroy New York City? Doesn’t sound too logical, especially considering the whole Tagruato viral storyline which was to set up the monster’s origins. But I could be missing something.

  • Whats funny is that during that scene, I was hoping they'd do something like that - like tease that something was in the water. And even though I was looking, I didn't see a splash or any other odd activity.

Maybe it was there and I missed it. Or maybe Matt Reeves is hoping suckers will see the movie a second time.
  • RAMFIST
Yeah in the end something def fell into the water. It was to the right side of the screen. It looked like a giant pill or somthing. This movie gave me a headache, but i still sorta liked it. Im interestd to see what kind of media this will spawn.

    Cheers!
  • Nate
I just got back from seeing Cloverfield. It was a solid movie - it lived up to what I expected. I dont ask much of movies though. I didnt see anything drop into the water at the end. If that was in the final cut it was very subtle
  • Monlynn510
Ruh-roh. I smell sequel potential here with the Easter egg ending. It came from space, and the chick that survives in the evac helicopter becomes a Ripley type having survived the previous monster. Please tell me I'm wrong, as that would be terrible.

Really I think we're not supposed to know the monster's origin. It's a "why do they hate us?" sort of unanswerable question. But the look of the thing and the parasites would indicate some kind of oceanic origin. Hmmm...
  • J brewer
I saw the splash at the end as well
It looked like it was out slightly behind and to the left of the ship on the far right hand of the screen... to be precise.

I couldn't make out what it was either. I freaked out when I saw it though.
  • Jerry Butler
So, this is just the luckiest camcorder on the planet then, not only documenting the entire attack, but just happens to catch the moment the creature lands weeks in advance to the exact moment of splashdown. Come on
  • johnstans1
There was definitely a splash in the distance, right before he turned the camera back onto himself and Beth.
  • Dante
Did they blow the monster up?
  • rollin
Can anyone get amateur footage of this scene so we can slow it down and analyze it?
  • It will be on the torrent sites soon. I was looking for *something* as well. I expected a slight ripple or something...
  • lalala jesse!
omfg i wanna know what the egg thing was about it cood uh been a flaw n the movie n not rele a part of it.... i hate the monster........... i expected better of the movie...

    o wellz!!!!!
  • rollin
Possibly some kind of egg/meteorite from space falling into the ocean???
  • rob
After the ending credits have completely run through, garbled radio static can be heard with the phrase "It's still alive" played in reverse
  • rollin
    Is that true???
  • rob
yes, it even says it on wikipedia.com ;x
  • Rutty
I bet the monster fell from space (in a slumber) and woke up a month later near the drilling site, it was disturbed so it attacked, it then went to new york where the movie begins
  • Anna
I hear the "its still alive" but i did not see the ripple in the water, I am going to see the movie again to see it. I LOVED the movie. Honestly I think it is a piece of art. I do not think there will be a sequal though, it is soo brilliant, the director just wants everyone to be afraid or anticipate a sequal I think.
  • Alex
Just came back from seeing Cloverfield a second time already and there was definitley something that splashed into the water near the boat. It wasnt that big so its improbable that that was the monster somehow. Rumor has it that whatever fell was part of the Tagurato satellite.

But beyond that the movie was spectacular, everything that I'd hoped it would be. And obviously good enough to see twice.
  • alterego
Beautiful movie. Very nice setup for sequel. I hope Cloverfield2 will start with most of US dominated by these creatures.
  • LEO
I AGREE THIS MOVIE, IN A MORE PHILOSOPHICAL STAND POINT... IS A GREAT PIECE OF ART, NOT THE MOST CLEAN ART BUT VERY ABSTRACT AND ATTENTION DRAWING. IM SATISFIED WITH WHAT IT GAVE ME, THOUGH LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE I HAVE QUESTIONS...

AS FAR AS THE CONEY ISLAND SCENE, I WAS WATCHING AND ANTICIPATING SOMETHING TO FALL OR FOR THERE TO BE SOMETHING NOTE WORTHY BUT, I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING...

ALSO I THINK WE CAN ALL CONCLUDE THE ONLY MAIN CHARACTER TO SURVIVE WAS LILLY???

IF INFO ARISES, KEEP ME POSTED....

There are few movies - in my life - that have impacted me the way Cloverfied has done. The Exorcist, Aliens, and to a lesser degree, ID4. For those of you that are critisizing the cryptic ending and (rather effective or you wouldn't be whinning) video cam perspective, I would suggest that if you want an ABC-123 what you see is all you get experience; then go buy a ticket for Set Up 2 the Streets! Abrams chose to let the viewer fill in the blanks; and effected brilliantly. Godzilla, Old or New, never scared anybody and neither did King Kong. The Cloverfield monster and parasitic guests are original villains and scary. The differnce between the Blair Witch perspective and the Cloverfield perspective is that - in Blair Witch - you were watching those poor souls as they experienced their unfortunate odessy; the Cloverfield victims take you there with them in a dramatically different way. We should never see a Cloverfield 2 Epic. The possibilities should forever remain a mystery.....(just like a good book :)
  • jeff
notice on rottentomatoes.com, all of the reviews despising the movie were all written by old farts in their late 40's, 50's. cloverfield was very well put together. with all the media hype and jj fucking with our heads up until the release date, we all were sucked in. good or bad, people bought into it.

    cheers.
  • Drew!
I saw this movie earlier tonight. I thought it was pretty interesting. I did see the splash in the water at the end, and I'm still creeped out about it.
  • riley
the thing that dropped in the water was deffinitly an egg. and it took a fewmonthes to hatch and grow. it came from space thats why i think and it seems certian
  • scott
ya i just saw this movie and it was sweeeet. I was 3 rows back and i didnt get sick to my stomach at all, neither did the people i was with. I really liked it and i hope they make a sequel. And yes there is a splash in the ocean at the end scene. If you watch it again look on the right side of the screen and it comes from outer space(probably) and splashes into the ocean. They need to make a sequel, but idk how they would because its kind of one of those movies that you can;t really duplicate, kinda a one time thing. But I still hope they make one.. gimme some answers!!!!!
  • Craig
I didn't see the thing dropping near the end (course I didn't know to look for it). Given the viral videos of it destroying an oil platform, maybe it was some sort of beacon type thing to lead it to New York?

I also didn't hear that staticy "It's still alive." Guess I have a couple things to look for on the DVD release.
  • weezy
loooved the movie! Brilliant piece of film! They could so do a sequel with the parasites that the monster dropped...have them grow into the same type monster and apparently..."it's still alive"! I freaked out during this movie...and i was a lil drunk at the time! Didnt see a splash...or at least i dont remember seeing one! Once again...loved
  • Kb
Ok I guess I have to be the bad guy, cause after reading your replies I dont think we saw the same movie. While we all agree the movie was "entertaining", calling it a Piece of Art is a stretch. Everything in this movie has been done before and is perdictable, down to the producer's signature "leave you clueless" style, which will hurt this movie like the way it was killing "Lost" before the writer's strike. (ok if you don't know, ratings on lost were rapidly declining since season two) While I will give tremendous "props" for keeping this movie secret from the first time the trailer was aired, to the day of its release, all the movie did was perpetuate the "wtf" factor. All I'm left with is a story about a guy chasing after his love. A gigantic monster just happens to be in his way. The whole "artistical symblism to 9/11" is just a way to ease that in-different feeling you have about sitting to watch 74 minutes of a movie without substance. I mean, its great that the director chose to be realistic about the effects crashing buildings in a city packed with skycrapers, but thats all you have for reasoning.
  • So, after seeing the film, and reading a number of things about it before the premiere, and after, I have to say that this film is indeed a step into the right direction. Yes, some of the techniques have been done before, but that doesn't take away from the artistic nature. If you actually believe that true art must never have been done before then you have no concept of art, as all artists steal. But if you must steal, steal from the best.

What Cloverfield is, is a throwback to monster movies. Think of it as Godzilla without the rubber suit, and from the perspective of those that are on the ground. It should have been more violent (like it was originally written to be) but that was nicely handled. If anything was disappointing it was the monster itself, as the minions didn't seem to fit the main monster. The mini creatures looked similar to creatures from Pitch Black, and Starship Troopers. The main monster does have a complete other-worldly feel, but it doesn't look like something that is supposed to survive out of the water.

As far as a sequel is concerned. I do expect one, but if it is done right, they don't have to bring in another creature. (Besides, for a film that cost $25 mil to double that in the first weekend... It's a no-brainer) They just have to use another camera, and tell a different story from that perspective. This story is about a man who goes after his lost love, and how his friends try to help him, but get killed along the way. Another perspective could be from the military perspective, as there are a lot of things going on in the city. Is this the only city that is attacked? I think it's safe to say that in NYC there are a lot of cameras as there are a LOT of amateur filmmakers that have their cameras with them all the time, it isn't a far stretch to imagine that some "other footage" was recovered.
  • deathtolife
the best thing about cloverfield.... the writers/producers don't try to explain away the monster. As with Aliens, Predator, Pitch Black, or as far as Starship Troopers we are told what these thigns were. With Cloverfield we are not. Which - in my opinion - makes movies better than 'escapism'. We are left to imagine for ourselves what it was meant to be.

A 2nd movie would hurt the story. Whats JJ options? Another handheld movie? A news story? Another discovered digital camera? Come on. People just don't think out of the box. Some people just have to have answers to what they don't understand. That adds to the ?? factor.

But, enjoy it for what it is a great movie for it's genre, and it opens up avenues for discussion over coffe or beer after the movie is over. Besides, the only person that knows or would be willing to tell is JJ. Just got to wait till the DVD.
  • Dan
I know most people were fine seeing this movie, but if you know that you get motion sick, don't see it!! I took dramamine, motion sickness medicine before going because I knew what to expect, but even with that I was sick to my stomach after five minutes and couldn't watch the rest of the movie. I sat through it because I was with my brother, but I had my eyes closed almost the whole time to keep from vomiting. I did open my eyes a few times to see the monster and the smaller spider-like creatures and what I saw was very cool, however I was soon sick again and sitting there pissed off and sick with my eyes closed. I wish I could have watched more of it because everyone else seemed to enjoy it. I will probably have to wait until it comes out on dvd and watch it on a smaller screen, that might prevent some of the motion sickness. Also, it was probably as bad as it was because the movie was packed and we had to sit right in front of the screen in the third row. If you don't get motion sick, then go enjoy a pretty entertaining film, if you do, then stay away until it's on dvd. My brother and I are also very interested about the ending. How cool would it be if this was an introduction to a sequal and it turns out to be based on H.P. Lovecraft's "Call of Cthulhu"!!
  • Tracy
Saw the movie last night, and I liked it. It did leave room for a sequel, and I believe that the sequel will be Godzilla (Zilla) vs/ the Cloverfield Monster. Maybe...
  • Jayster
I loved the movie but does anyone know why they called it cloverfield.
  • noelle
I LOVED 'Cloverfield.' It absolutely lived up to the hype and the monster was AWESOME. I wanted to see so much more of it killing people! I did not catch the "egg-thing" dropping into the water at the end when they showed the Coney Island footage shot amonth or so before the attack-but I think it's brilliant that they did that!
I will def see it again with someone who hasn't seen it yet (it's fun that way :)
I LIVE for original movies like 'Cloverfield'....mixed feelings about a sequel--they tend to diminish the original, unless it's a "Bourne.." sequel.
Anyway, I want more of this monster....
  • i thought the movie was great, i was thinking a sequel that will show more of origins, but not as a traditional sequel.. it would not be filmed the same way, as it might show the events from another POV.
leaving the original movie in tact.
  • Sinister_matt
Theres a lot more to this story then meets the eye. They Didnt Mention Slusho, Tagruato, or T.I.D.O, or anything. I want to know more about the "deep sea nectar" that tagruato uses inside the slusho drink. What connection does it have with the creature, what about the UFO, or the pictures on 1-18-08.com, the new ones are amazing btw...Im sure the story will continue but not in movie form, but I bet there will be comicbooks or graphic novels. just like AVP. I think the real info will be on the web honestly, for the true fans to find.
  • Slappy
I have been looking forward to this movie since I first heard about it (about a year!). I was VERY disappointed with the shaky cam for the ENTIRE movie! I do understand why it was used, but the buddy I went with got sick! A "loose" steady cam would have been better and just as effective.

I have never seen so many people get up and walk out of a movie before. Boos and hisses at the ending from the crowd! Someone even tossed in a "that movie sucked!" I don't agree.

I liked it. I just want to watch it again (at home) and I think I'll like it even more. I do think there should have been a second movie released two weeks later - a standard movie from a military perspective (throw in some hot scientist chicks etc) and have the two movies cross over for content - just with a different POV and provide a bit more info. This would build up the "franchise" and get people more pumped about Cloverfield.

From the reaction of the crowd that I was with - I give Cloverfield a strong first week run with heavy drop off. I still give it a 7/10.
  • todamgood4U
It wasn't supposed to be named Cloverfield. That was the production name to keep it a secret, but it was leaked onto the internet so heavily, that they decided to keep it.
  • kevin
i did not see the egg splash but a friend of mine, who was in the same theatre at the same time, said he saw an egg at that exact part at coney island. i went home, looked online and saw that something did splahs at that part and that he was correct so i do think there was something there. also, i believe there will be a sequel..........this time in japan........with a side dish of pikachu
  • DarkOneDer
The thing most people seem to be forgetting is that this "movie" is not really a movie. It's footage of an event which happens to be part of a bigger story. The Cloverfield footage we saw in theaters is just another clue to unravel the bigger story. Whatever gripes about "plot/substance" that people are having aren't relevant because it is not even a traditional "movie" in any sense. Like it or not, the film is entertainment and we've all been suckered into the lore of "Cloverfield". Personally, I'll be waiting for more developments. JJ is clever, can't deny that.
  • Gary
Ok I saw the movie. I thought it was ok but the ending was horrible. I am all for a bit of mystery to the movie, but just like Lost, the story starts and you feel like you are going to get something but by the end theres just alot of people dead, there may or may not be a monster/black smoke in the city/island. In addition the whole "Viral Story" is a real letdown. You advertise the movie on TV, then you add a story somewhere I have to hunt up? I looked at the Wiki page and checked out 3 of the pages. A drink, a picture of a newsletter posted so fuzzy its illegible, and a collection of 10 videos of a girl talking to a camera then cutting up a bear. Obviously I am not getting something somewhere. If anyone knows of a webpage where the viral story is laid out please let me know. Id love to not miss out on it.

All in all I enjoyed it but just like with his Lost product, the ending or lack thereof leaves me dissapointed rather than wanting more. Id definitely go see a sequel, even if it was another day with a few more kids who find a camcorder and record their way out of Day 2. I just wouldnt get so excited and go opening night again. Fool me once, shame on me... Fool me twice and I just wonder why I am still TiVoing Lost. =*(
  • onairscott
There are 2 distinct possibilities about the egg thing falling into the water...I have analyzed amateur footage of the movie. I have a friend who uses forensic technology software to identify objects in digital or film photography. After hours of looking at the Cloverfield footage to define that portion of the film in question, there are really only 2 possible explanations or conclusions: (1) Judging from the colours apparent on the object just before it hits the water, it must be some kind of alien easter egg or (2) when speeding up the audio "roar" of the monster, it definitely has the "buck buck cluck" sound of a chicken.
Now, putting these two facts together, one can only assume you have one pissed off big ass chicken on the rampage in New York City. Judgement day for the Colonel and those who would partake in an extra crispy dinner time curriculum after all these years. The movie should have been more aptly called "PETA'S REVENGE"!!! YAAAAAAAAHHH BABEEEEEE :-)
  • MomentoMori
The whole point of the viral campaign...slusho and all the internet stuff...was just to generate buzz and get people inside the theaters. It's not part of some wider JJ Abrams conspiracy or plot or storyline or anything. What you saw in the movie was the end result of all of it.

I thought 'Cloverfield' was good and fairly clever but certainly not the greatest ever. It was a novelty movie and was fairly entertaining. End of story.
  • Shake
For a sequal they should have the attack on NY on new reports, and as people hear about what happened in NY the monster should start tearing up other places in the country
  • Honestly, I think everyone is thinking too hard about this.

Clearly, the Cloverfield monster came from Maine. There's nothing in the movie the contradict that this is anything other than a sequel to The Mist.
  • Joel
I say taking a dump was more intresting then Cloverfield. Peice of Art my ass! I do not see why anyone can be saying that movie was all that. I want my hard earn money back. On a scale to 1 to 10 with 10 being outstanding. I give it a -10. All I know is I need that video recorder cause man that sucker had one hell of a battery life and stood up to a lot of abuse like being almost eaten by a monster, surives a crash and a bridge falling in on it and it still works. Amazing. Don't go waste your money or time on this awful movie. Take a motion sickness pill before you go because with all that moving around with the camera will make you sick.
  • James
If you get motion sickness then don't see the movie, and don't complain that it sucked. The movie was supposed to seem more realisitic from the people's point of view, not the audience's.

Does anyone even know what the monster was though? It reminded me of those land things from Tremors, it was like a spider/crab/monter entity thing.
  • C.
There is a splash to the right side of the screen when they're filming the shore at Coney Island in the Apr. 27th footage. It looked like a meteorite. It could be the monster in infancy and it took a month for it to grow to full size.
  • I am 55 years old, I rate cloverfield up there with Frankenstien (Karloff), Jaws, Alien and Aliens, it is original, fresh and has the only ending that it could have and be so great.
Anyone that knocks this movie should spend the rest of their life forced to watch Dragon Wars over and over again, but they probably like it.
As far as the one who said at rottentomatoes those coming down on Cloverfield were in their 40's and 50's guess what some of us in our 50's liked it as well.
I wish I had seen it before I am Legend which was a let down. If you have read the book you know what I mean or the two movies done off the book before I am Legend.
  • As far as something falling in the water a month before if it took a while to hatch a month may not be out of the question.
Either the creature (I do not like calling it a monster):
    1. Fell from Space
    2. Was released from a deep trench in the ocean.
    3. Due to global warming an ice berg melted and released the egg.
4, Created by the Government and the name Cloverfield refers to the project.
    5. It was created by Japan and dropped on NY as payback for Godzilla done in NY.

Let me know if you can think of a new reason for the creature, by the way I love how so many things were left up to us to decide on what it meant or was.
