Tim Burton

Before BeetleJuice, Batman, Pee Wee Herman’s Big Adventure, and Sweeney Todd, Tim Burton directed a modern gothic violent retelling of Hansel and Gretel. Never heard of it before? I assure you, It exists. Although very little evidence can be found. And if you haven’t seen it, you likely never will.

Filmed for $116,000 on 16mm, this live-action short film featured a cast of amateur Japanese actors, kung fu fights and Japanese toys, as Burton was obsessed with Japanese culture at the time of production. The film’s design style and color schemes paid homage to the Godzilla movies and is said to be heavy on special effects, making use of front projection, forced perspective and even some stop-motion animation. Most reputable sources claim the film runs a full 45 minutes, but other fan reviews have a listed  runtime anywhere from a 15-30 minutes. The plot of the film is very traditional: Hansel and Gretel must escape a witch and her gingerbread house to find their father.

Tim Butron’s Hansel and Gretel aired on the Disney Channel on Halloween night in 1982, and was never seen or heard from again. This gem is near impossible to find. Search Google, Ebay, YouTube, Torrent Sites, you won’t find anything. Tim Burton is said to have been embarrassed of this early work, which might explain why the short has never been released on home video or DVD.

I haven’t even seen this film, nor have I met anyone who has personally seen it. It’s become somewhat of an urban legend around Hollywood. Accounts of this short vary from person to person, and from source to source, so the above description might feature inaccuracies.

Pretty strange. You'd think this would be leaked on one of the torrent sites by now. I heard about it a long time ago but had forgotten it existed. Hansel and Gretal was always a really spooky fairytale to me - there names alone made me think of the twins in the Shining for whatever reason. I wonder how many copies of it are floating around??

I have personally seen this movie, and I am from Tajikistan, people haven't even heard about the country. But the movie was very spooky. A dark interpretation of the book. Was pretty scared, but loved it.

"Disney Channel's first broadcasting day occurred on April 18, 1983. At the inception, the Disney Channel only aired 18 hours a day from 7:00 AM to 1:00 AM; 24-hour programming would begin in December 1986."

    That only version in emule
Los Cuentos De Las Estrellas - Hansel Y Gretel (Tim Burton) By Smt.avi
    is fake.
    It really is
Faerie Tale Theatre - Hansel and Gretel (1983)
in Spanish and has nothing to do with Tim Burton.
  • diodox
Yes... It's a pity. This was directed by James Frawley, you can find some info at Imdb.

IMDB says that Burton did Hansel and Gretel but also an Aladdin's version.

I hope to find both someday.

    Thank you all any way.

Burton's ALADDIN is available on DVD. Has been for a while. It's not a Disney production, however. It was for Showtime/Shelley Duvall:

And I have a copy of the original Hansel and Gretel on a Beta tape from it's original broadcast. I need to have it digitized!!
  • val louise
YOU ROCK! >< omg! your like the only person who was smart enough to record it! can you get it digitized? have you? cause if you do me and how many other Tim Burton fans will love you forever! :)
  • E-rock
If you ever get it transferred it would be greatly appreciated. I have a Beta Player which I have transferred some of my friends old beta movies to DVD. I doubt you would be willing to give that up, but if you have an extra copy I can always transfer it. Just a thought
  • Just_Jess
Did u ever get it transfered i'd love to see it ???
  • ellachick
Tim Burton should give hansel and gretel a try once again.
cause the story in general is pretty cool and to have Tim direct it, would just be phenominal!!!
  • Max
You can see the movie at the Tim Burton exhibit at the MoMA.

And in its entirety, too. However, it tends to be a bit difficult to hear when there are a lot of people around. Try to visit on a slower day.

Instead of a Gingerbread house, it's more like a colored-goo-filled marshmallow house. Often, the walls or furniture pop or become punctured, and gush colored jelly. There is a little joke where the old witch (with a candy-cane nose) ofers the children seats around a multi-tiered pink frosted cake, but the cake is inedible. Everything around it, however, is. Creepy candy-cane hands make an appearance in the film at some point, which are blatantly Tim Burton (Think the shrimp fingers in Beetlejuice), and there is an appearance by an incredibly creepy "gingerbread man" puppet who forces the boy to eat him.

Anyway, it's very easy to tell if you're watching a fake if you haven't seen anything that I have listed above. I suggest that you all visit the MoMA to see it, and the rest of the Tim Burton exhibition. It's up until April 24th, 2010. All SUNY and most NY college students get into the museum free with ID. Adults are $20, and students in general are $12.

Just went to the MoMa today. The film is crazy bizarre, just how Alicia described it. Gooey Marshmellow house with this witch with like a candy cane nose. The ginger bread man is very creepy. The little boy gets full and the ginger bread man is screaming at the kid to eat him. I thought the film was absolutely amazing. Its a shame he hasn't out it out. If you live near NY, I highly recommend going to the exhibit. It was definitely worth it.

The Tim Burton Display is indeed showing a vhs tape, recorded from the Disney Channel. Tim Burton apparently has destroyed the masters according to what is at the exhibit.
  • No name
    Tim Burton rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!
