Lost In Translation Whisper

When Sofia Coppola’s Lost In Translation, one of the big topics of conversation revolved around what Bill Murray’s character whispered in Scarlett Johansson’s ear at the conclusion of the film. Sofia Coppola gave interviews saying that nothing was officially scripted, and that only Johansson and Murray know what was really said. YouTube user Vid22 used digital processing to clear up the audio and finally reveal the answer. Watch the video after the jump for the big reveal. But let me warn you, whatever you have created in your imagination if likely better than the actual quote.

Eh I don't know if i buy this...if you tell anyone that something they're hearing is something else and play it over and over again it's gonna start to sound like that.

...though I do appreciate the Jesus and Mary Chain ending
  • RyRy
damnit, why did i watch that, it was much better without knowing :/
  • H
I can't hear it... what does it say?
  • Robert
He says, "Why does Snoop Dogg carry and umbrella?" To which she softly, almost imperceptibly replies, "For Drizzle?" They embrace. The end. Tissues abound.
  • Robert
Supposed to be AN umbrella. Dammit! I screwed it up. LOL!
  • bob johnson
that was so fake its not even funny. it doesn't even make sense grammatically.
  • blah
    Bob Johnson, your an idiot.
  • lmao
Ok ... so first off.. that make out scene was like 30 years of wrong.... anyhoo... the audio is definately photoshopped... FAKE!
  • Paolo
    blah, you're an idiot.

Seriously now, it did irk me not knowing, but now that i do i wish it was something completely separate to the story, like a simple joke Murray must have thousands of.
  • me
    SIMPSONS DID IT!
  • Mike
sounds fake... the reflections and shadows are all wrong.
  • tuxtered
After the jump? What jump - oh, after the FOLD.

    Bugs me no end...

If there's no link, there's no jump...
  • RyanW
    photoshopped
  • Naw - Murray just lip-synced to a line they looped from Sophia's dad's film "The Conversation":

"He'd kill us if he got the chance."

Makes as much sense as what's been offered here.
  • Steve
Why don't we just ask Bill?
  • ray
You idiots (spoken from Ren and Stempy)

Photoshop is for images, this is audio. if you are going to make acusatory posts, at least TRY and sound like you know something.

Say Audacity. I knew you could.

What he really said was" I am so old you make me feel like a pedophile, OK" or

"I am not funny any more, OK"

    ha ha

the movie was so lame, an old burned out guy with a young hot chick, yeah, the World works like that. Dir
  • paul
    @ray

aw come on, it's a shop- I can tell by the pixels (and having seen a few shops in my day)
  • I Photoshopped my Audacity and it came out like Bill Murray whispering:

"Ray has no sense of humour. Don't listen to him. Okay?"

And as for asking Bill - I did - he ain't talking.

At least not to me. The room was crowded. I was behind the bar. Maybe he didn't hear me. Or see me.

    now i'm depressed
  • Michael
Goddammit--that ruined it. It wasn't a love story--it was a movie about alienation and loneliness and bad luck.
  • Pete
Wow, I can't believe I'm the only positive reply so far. If what the captioning said was really the line that was spoken, I think that was pretty good. I had always wondered what would happen to the characters after the movie ended.
  • Ricochet
Fine, I can buy thats what was said no go figure out what was in suitcase in Pulp Fiction.
  • Anonymous Coward
"the movie was so lame, an old burned out guy with a young hot chick, yeah, the World works like that"
Ever heard of Hugh Hefner? Old burned out guy with /multiple/ young hot chicks. Bastard!
  • and the only thing Heff lets gets between him - is another chick
  • Taylor
Why would he say "I have to be leaving" when any American would only ever say "I have to leave?"
  • paul
uhhh... did no care to track down the SCRIPT ? ...

    see here: http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/lost-in-tran...

then it's not so mysterious anymore.

Althought, Scarlett Johanson's "okay" is not in here. ..

    ouuo uouououu ... more speculation.
  • paul
sorry I forgot to add, the suitcase in Pulp Fiction, has MONEY in it.
  • Jeff
If the suitcase from PF had money in it, why would Ringo ask, "Is that what I think it is?" If it is was money, why would he ask such an obvious question?
  • Jeff
Freaky, last 3 posters = Jeff Paul Taylor = my name
  • Karlos
Duh everybody knows the briefcase in 'Pulp Fiction' has Marsellus' soul in it... :)
  • Anthony
I love that line and it is the perfect end to the movie. I have to be leaving, but I won't let that come between us, okay? Unbelievably good.
  • billy madison
    what he REALLY said:

    "want to touch the hiney"
  • nighthawk
Agreed, definitely photoshopped. And I can see by the artifacts in their eyes that they're not right for each other anyway.
  • Marcos Gonzalez
    Wow! Part 2 coming, right?
  • This one whisper totally changes my perspective of the entire film! I'm not sure which ending I prefer: being oblivious to what Bill Murray whispered (because some things are better left unsaid) or knowing that if he indeed said those words, THAT is how Scarlett's character reacted. Now if Murray confirmed it...that'd be interesting.
  • trick
nope. doesn't sound like that at all. the older translation sounds right to me:

"I'll always remember the past few days with you...don't part mad, tell him the truth, okay?"

AND it makes tons more sense for the characters.
  • matt
yeah, the photoshop comments bug me to. Why don't you say, Auditioned? Or, Soundboothed?
  • jh
jag kommer för alltid att minnas min egen lost in translation-upplevelse. hon är den vackraste jag kysst.
  • nighthawk
for all of those who aren't enjoying the photoshop comments:

  • Bob
First, that script online is not the final cut.

Second, no one really knows what he said. End of story. The End. Get over it!
  • My guess would have been: "No. _I_ am your father."
  • Meh
I still don't think that's right. Though I don't catch the beginning, I'm almost positive the end of his sentence is "tell the truth, OK?"
  • nmidas
:bump: would just like to say BS to the "digital processing" and the youtube video. the first part of his whisper is totally unintelligible and the 2nd part COULD be what the youtube video says- about not letting anything come between them but it also sounds a lot like "call your husband and tell him you love him, okay?" almost same amount of syllables.
  • Tracey
I agree with Meh....There is no doubt in my mind the last four words he said were 'tell the truth ok?' But no matter how hard I try, I can't make out what he said before that.
  • Chad Sexington
"I love you. Don't forget to always tell the truth."
  • tendr
i loved the movie....and to me it WAS a love story....it was sad and sweet both.....i'm so tired of ppl bitching about ppl older than forty....you get older or you die young...get over it.
  • Name
“I’ll always remember the past few days with you… Don’t part mad, tell him the truth, okay?"
