Rumor: Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk Comic Book Movie CrossoversI hate to publish rumors, especially with the recent spell of inaccurate information spreading its way across the interwebs, but this is just too good not to comment on.

When I was a kid, I was big into comic books. And I was a sucker for comic book crossovers, where one superhero would team-up or fight another superhero in a special comic book release. As I got older, I learned that these issues usually were never as good as the headline on the comic book cover. But every time a crossover issue came out, I still bought it.

Until now most comic book movies have operated in separate universes. Sure, there have been easter egg background references like the mention of Gotham City on a news report in a Superman film, or new superhero introductions as was Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, but no two comic book films have collided. Until now that is.

AICN is reporting a rumor that Marvel has shot a scene between The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man which will somehow play and be connected in both films. Can you imagine that? When I first heard this news I had a geekgasm, and was overrun with excitement. But after I started to assess the possibilities I realized that much like the comic book crossovers from my childhood, this is probably not a good idea (or at least not as great as it sounds). And from the sound of it, the idea seems to be an afterthought, and not something that was constructed to bridge both films together. It instead sounds like a last minute gimmick, which could have been great if it was fully developed. Again, this is all just speculation.

What do you guys think? Would you like to see more big screen comic book crossovers or should the superheroes stick to their own respective films?

Iron Man hits theaters on May 2nd, 2008. The Incredible Hulk hits theaters one month later on June 13th, 2008.

Why not? Hell even if it’s just Iron Man flying by in a scene it’d be cool. Or a shot of Tony Stark on the news talking about capturing the Hulk. :)

I LOVE this idea! Just a link and a nod to movie fans lends the ground work for a future Avengers movie where we’ll see the ultimate cross over. It’s like Martin Riggs of Lethal Weapon teaming up with John McClane of Die Hard. Movie fans will eat it up!

I would have such a fan-gasm. It would kick an untold amount of ass just to HEAR Stark’s name mentioned in a scene for The Hulk.

THis would be really cool if true.

I think the best way would be how they were thinking on AICN. With Nick Fury approaching each of them seperately in an early recruitment for the Avengers just so we know that they co-exist in the same Universe. Like say something like how he’s trying to get a team going for the BIG jobs. Then in the second movie of each series have them meet face to face for a scene. Then fury can reappear and talk to them together in the third movie of each series talking about how well they worked together or something of the sort and then offer them each a position in The Avengers.

I don’t understand why this hasn’t happened before. I know I’ve wanted it since the beginning, it IS the Marvel Universe after all. No harm in having a shot of Spider-Man swinging by in the background or something. It would have to be organic to the film, but these characters all live in the same world. Why not?

Perhaps now that Marvel is controlling their own productions we’ll see more of this going forward?

To me, there is something genuinely interesting about these two particular characters meeting and having Nick Fury serve as the common link between them. I think that Ang Lee’s Hulk film felt too detached from the comic superverse, and from a business standpoint as well as a creative one, I think it’s a smart decision for the new Hulk flick.

The combo of Iron Man-tech and Hulk-biology is what makes this appealing. Add on some Nick Fury-weaponary and it sparks.

And if Ghostface Killah can cameo in Iron Man, why not Hulk??

Anyone know who’s going to direct Nick Fury? I hope they line up a badass action director like McTiernan (sic) and a not a go-to like the Transporter guy.

I used to be crazy for crossovers as a kid too. Part of why I’m still such a huge JLA freak, there are crossovers/team-ups between my favorite DC heroes every month!! ;-D

This sounds like an awesomely kick ass idea,IMO!! I can’t wait to see this! I hope there are more crossovers/8 nods of the heads to fans in comic book movies to come!

This is just reason #101 why Marvel pwns WB.

$#!+ like ’spider-man swinging in the background’ or ‘iron man flying by’ would be a little…distracting. that doesn’t even happen in the comics…if a character is actually involved they would have to be a part of the story, right?

hopefully what this means is something like the hulk going on a rampage and one of the buildings he trashes belongs to stark, or a scene where bruce banner steals stuff from a stark industries lab in an attempt to cure himself. THAT would make me geek out and be completely appropriate for the film, giving you a sense of a shared universe with out a forced cameo.

this could be amazing if true.

I think it would be cool. I always hoped Fox would do something like that since they have quite a few properties (X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil/Elektra). I actually remember when Peyton Reed was involved in Fantastic Four (*shudder*), Kirsten Dunst was going on about how they had plans to make connections with the Spider-Man films and all…

The one good thing that might come out of this is if it leads to an Avengers movie. Perhaps they plan on also tieing it into the upcoming Thor and Capt. America movies.

“Organic to the story” being keywords that should be paid attention to. Helps if you read more than the first line. ‘Nuff said.

Can’t wait till Batman vs Superman, just like in the ‘I am Legend’ movie. I always thought Marvel would beat them with a Spiderman/Blade or Punisher/Daredevil crossover.
