“The book of the summer. . . . No quietly building, Ruth Rendell-style suspense here; Smith intends to scare the bejabbers out of you, and succeeds. There are no chapters and no cutaways-The Ruins is your basic long scream of horror. It does for Mexican vacations what Jaws did for New England beaches in 1975. . . . It works well enough, I think, to be the book most people will be talking about this summer. Enjoy the beach . . . enjoy the books . . . and watch out for those Mexican ruins.”
- Stephen King, Entertainment Weekly

Based on the bestselling novel by Scott Smith (critically-acclaimed author and screenwriter of A Simple Plan), The Ruins follows two American couples, just out of college, enjoying a pleasant, lazy beach holiday together in Mexico , who become entangled in a brutal struggle for survival after visiting remote Mayan ruins, site of a fabled archeological dig.
Directed by Carter Smith, the film adaptation stars Jonathan Tucker (The Black Donnellys), Jena Malone (Saved), Shawn Ashmore (X-Men: The Last Stand), Laura Ramsey (She’s the Man) and Joe Anderson (Across the Universe).
Three new production photos from the film have been released, which we found through our friends at FirstShowing.

The Ruins hits theaters on April 11th, 2008.

Loved the novel. Can’t wait to check out this film. It’ll be interesting to see how everything translates to the screen.

i thought the book was terrible, just a bunch of wannabe-crichton cliche. the movie doesn’t look much better…

I still can’t believe they are making this into a movie. They should just make it really bad on purpose to go the comedy route like Nicolas Cage’s Wicker Man.

I was surprised when I originally read the Steven King Review and then I read the book and was so let down…Its just a bunch of people freaking out and I won’t spoil over what… Its like Maximum Overdrive without cars, which is why steven king probably liked it.

The book isn’t really that amazing…definitly not “what Jaws was for N.E. beaches in ‘75″.
The only hope for the film is the execution of the Evil that is stalking the tourists… if done the way it is described in the book, it’ll be the downfall of the film…it has to be much more realistic than that, and completly unlaughable…
the book was a reach to enjoy.

I just finished the book today, and i absolutely loved it to death. I saw the trailer for the movie and was greatly disappointed that they switched the roles of Eric and Stacy around. I was also upset that they left Pablo out.
