Avatar Concept Art?

Beowulf + Tron = Avatar?

Avatar Concept ArtThe photo to the right has been circulating around the web for a couple days now, but I have decided until now, not to post it because I believed it to be fake. Tonight, all the major movie websites are running with the photo, so I thought, what the hell. So what is the photo of?

Unknown sources are claiming that the photo is of an indigenous alien race called the Na’vi from James Cameron’s upcoming $190+ million super-epic 3D performance-capture/live action/animation hybrid Avatar. The original treatment for Avatar described the Na’vi as tall and blue, so this very well could be conceptual art for the species, however, I’m hoping that isn’t the case. To me it looks like a combination of Angelina Jolie as Grendal’s mother (from Beowulf), and the cult classic Disney film TRON. Click on the image to enlarge.

Avatar follows a paraplegic war veteran named Jake, who is summoned to a planet inhabited by  a primitive alien race, in order to help exploit the planet’s resources. Humans are able to create Avatars, genetically engineered copies of the aliens, that they are able to control. Jake unexceptionally falls in love with one of the alien creatures. Written by Cameron eleven years ago as an 80-page treatment, Avatar will be released in Digital 3D on May 22, 2009.

I’m really hoping that Cameron’s Avatar is something innovative and special, but this just looks like more of the same. I’ll keep you updated, but for now, I’m hoping this isn’t legit. What do you guys think?

  • i would spend most of my time looking at different places like hollywood or some other places that i have never been to before i have been to a few places like spain, portugal, cornwall, devon and other places and the place that i liked the most was spain because it is really a nice place to go to on holiday and my friends agree with me that it is a really hot place with loads of sunshine

P.S.: Thankfully, more and more people are actually becoming aware that hollywood's output is almost all insufferable trash, and spending their money and time on more worthwhile diversions. So how are Cameron and Co. going to lure you into coming to see this stinking pile?

    Two words: Three Dee.

    yawn... hollywood.

They will go on and on about how it is 'Cameron's' vision, but cameron didn't draw that model. An artist did. That's right: somebody with actual artistic talent.

Boycott this and all other explotations of good people's hard work by the power elite.

Honestly, when we see that baby up on the screeen with the 3d shades on, we won't even recall this image it'll look so badass and different.

"Avatar" is going to change the game. Cameron would not return to filmmaking with such an ambitious project otherwise. After seeing "Beowulf" and knowing that Cameron had a load more money to play with and better tech than Zemeckis even, just prepare yourselves.
  • it's an interesting image... the movie looks promising to me...

It reminds me of Metropolis, but there you go...

I think it's probably legit. Interesting that it makes you think of Tron--French artist Moebius did a lot of the concept art for Tron. What else did e do concept art for? The Abyss. Now this drawing isn't a Moebius drawing but it could be inspired by earlier drafts or it could just be that Cameron said "I like Moebius' design work--do something like that". Either way, I'm leaning towards this being the real thing.

it reminds me of the concept art of the abyss. so that alone made me think it's legit.

if anyone but me remembers all the abyss' art was drawn in pastel and chalk on black paper, very similar to this style.
  • I will repeat for you. 20th Century Fox demanded it's retraction. While it is possible that they are digging for publicity, that would indeed be a dubious practice. My site was not the only one affected by Fox's legal department.

More likely this is the work of an aspiring concept artist who has circulated this on the net in hopes of getting some media attention by having his art "mistaken" for something official.

Seems to conform with the fuzzy fx-test photo that Joblo had a few months ago: http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=16578

I kind of like the design of it. Nothing radical, but it's just concept art. Could be really impressive in motion.
  • 1. The original link for the image is from www.MarketSaw.com
    2. I cannot comment on it further as 20th Century Fox demanded that I remove it and not talk further about it or what character it is supposed to represent.
    3. Avatar will be a monster hit. Underestimating Cameron has been done before, its time to get over it. Titanic proved him to be the best.

no Angelina Jolie just played Grendels mother, as far as i know. You know that picture of Angelina Jolie is very flattering of her, but the picture of the Na'vi is actually kinda cool but with all the hype thats been fed to the movie im hoping the come up with something better.
