Joker Empire Magazine

The January issue of Empire Magazine features an exclusive photo of Heath Ledger as The Joker from the Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight. I’m still quite impressed by the facial makeup, but the outfit seems more like movie wardrobe, and less like this guy’s normal dress attire. Don’t get me wrong, it’s far from the cartoonish look of the previous incarnations. I probably just need a chance to get use to it. Check out the full cover photo after the jump.

    It looks good.

I agree. Not to be a hater in the slightest, but I feel like Nolan’s vision is a bit compromised. The wardrobe is too clean, especially for a prison environment. This Joker is supposed to be stricken with mental illness, and while the makeup is good, I can’t feel a little let down by the pics I’ve seen. this is Batsy’s most iconic villain and I don’t get the excitement I got from seeing Nicholson’s Joker (which was based in Burton’s world and not the comics). I feel like I’ve already seen this movie too. Hopefully it plunges into a darker place than I envision, but gut feeling says there is a little too much posturing going on with this movie.

“The wardrobe is too clean, especially for a prison environment.”

Umm….It’s a posed picture for a magazine, not a still from the movie.

this has to be one of my favorite cover of any magazine i’v seen in any magazine…..and i’ve seen them all…..cant wait for THE DARK KNIGHT……heath leadger is doing a fine job as THE JOKER

    @krackajap

Umm, so you’re saying this entire wardrobe is not going to be used in the film then? Or maybe they’ll soil him before they shoot?

Does anyone know if the Batcave Waterfall (TM) will appear in The Dark Knight? That was one of the few things I dreaded about Nolan’s film.

    Oh my god! thats awesome!

TheDohDoh first, they’re almost done shooting if they’re not already. Second, if you look at other pictures of him that are actually from the film and not from a photo shoot you can see that he’s not all nice and clean. There is a pic of batman grabbing him by the neck of his shirt and you can see that it’s all dirty, wrinkled, and ripped. (not too sure what you’ve been looking at aside from maybe the pic of him with the knife but he’s wearing a jacket over everything because even in his pre “joker” picture where he has the clown mask on his clothes look beat to heck) Third, you don’t think this joker is dirty enough but you loved Nickelson? Re-watch that lol he looks like his suit just came from the dry cleaners for the entire movie. Fourth, from that video which was screened in Toronto a few months ago and released pictures**SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN/READ ABOUT THOSE** If you don’t think walking down the street with a machine gun just mowing people down while they’re all running because the CITY is literally on fire, blowing up a hospital, jokerizing someone (been confirmed someone will get a gash smile to match), etc etc is dark and twisted enough then I don’t know what to say lol

as to the waterfall, (forgot to answer that part) *SPOILER* PICTURE FROM A FEW MONTHS AGO showed the “bat cave” that they’re currently using. Remember, The Dark Knight takes off almost right where Begins ended so I’m assuming that the mansion and cave aren’t rebuilt yet. What he was using was like a “special” basement type thing of a loft in the city. It’s basically a huge bright room that looks nothing like a cave. Can only assume that it’s temporary until the mansion is rebuilt. They wouldn’t leave him in “The Bat Loft” forever lol

I would for all purposes agree with you guys about this Joker outfit still looking a bit too clean for a mental-case. BUT, then you have to consider, this isn’t just any mental-case… not just your average guy out of the loony bin… this is The Joker. He’s an exception to the rule. He’s obsessed with his look, this persona. He wants his face everywhere. He’s obsessed with the image he’s created for himself, so naturally, he’s going to outfit himself in a way that magnifies that. He’s not just crazy, he’s the king of the crazies. He’s gonna dress like clown royalty.

I’m still waiting for the Joker done right. Nicholson wasn’t right. Nicholson was a fat old man in a purple suit. This sure doesn’t seem right. Maybe someday.

Rich.. Might not want to fully judge until the performance. Who knows.

  12. Gravatar

Rich YAN what in your opinion is the Joker done right then? The big smile that takes up an entire face and makes the teeth each about 4 inches long? They tried that re: Nicholson.

I like the dark, insane take on the Joker … its in the spirit of the Miller comics - and Nolan’s own vision. A genius nutcase - now that’s really scary. You can’t reason with insanity.

great characterization of the Joker… excelent outfit and makeup… can’t wait for the next Batman…

WOW!!! im impressed. When i had seen previosly leaked photos of the joker i was doubtful, but now that i finally see him in full its pretty awesome, but i do think that his wardrobe could have been a little more human, and not so costumish, but his face looks bad ass!!!

  16. Gravatar

    this.

    rocks.

  17. Gravatar

by the by, i think the joker shops second hand…so the doubters hating his costume should find something substantial to pick on.

the makeup is awesome. if this doesn’t say ‘crazy motherfucker’ i really don’t know what does.

i’m befuddled by the negativity here, although it sounds like it’s no more than two people

i’m a HUGE chris nolan fan so i love this movie by default. every time heath ledger opens his mouth about being the joke the info just gets better and better. the costume is perfect, i actually thought that nolan would be almost completely unfaithful to the character in order to make him fit into his world but thankfully we have the right mix of realism and sheer comic book quirk.

best empire cover in ages and empire have A LOT of good covers

I totally agree Fanboy. I was half expecting to see Joker in a straight jacket and dirty tattered rags… which I would have though “ok… he looks crazy.. but is that the Joker?” This son of a bitch looks crazy as hell, and at the same time, he’s undeniably the Joker at a glance. A very fine, very smart balance.

I have nothing more to say.

  21. Gravatar

yeah because the joker dresses like a normal guy. Stop hating, if you want to see the joker dressed in wardrobe watch the tim burton movie. You guys are trying to say that Jacks joker was a believable character? Please.

  22. Gravatar

after seeing the trailer, i can say without a doubt that this joker will be terrifying while being believable, and yet still fit the mould of the joker character. this is coming from someone who was extremely skeptical when first hearing ledger had been cast for the part. but now, as i said, this character has been made to fit right into nolan’s realistic (i realize this term is a stretch) take on the batman/gotham universe. as for the clothes debate, i believe the still from the mag cover is a shot from the movie when the joker is incarcerated (which clearly won’t last long) and may explain why his clothes are in good shape. the rest of the preview shows him looking like one crazy, dirty mF**.. been researching this film and role a lot, just wanted to add my two cents.. comments, friendly or otherwise, are welcomed
