Earlier this year Julie Taymor (The Lion King) announced plans to direct a Broadway musical based on Spider-Man. With Across The Universe now behind her, the casting process is upcoming. Taymor told The Daily Mail that she hopes to reteam with her Across The Universe cast for the stage project. Apparently Taymor would like to cast Jim Sturgess as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man and Evan Rachel Wood as Mary Jane Watson.
“There, I’ve said it. Now I have to go through a web to get them,” Taymor said, adding: “Jim’s certainly interested, but his film career has taken off, so I have to nab him between movies. Same with Evan. They’d be my ideal pairing, though, if they’re free.”
Wood and Sturgess are such perfect, yet different, choices for the stage adaptation. But forget about a musical, why not have Wood and Sturgess in Spider-Man 4? It looks like Tobey, Kirsten and Sam won’t be returning for a fourth Spider-man film (of course, this all could change). Am I crazy for suggesting the idea? Who would you cast in a Spider-Man musical? Or Spider-Man 4 for that matter?

you need someone who’s been in solid films but is relatively low profile - but all the new hollywood boys are getting too high-profile to take on the gig now: Shia LaBoef, Emile Hirsch, Joseph Gordon-Levitt…
but the beauty of peter parker is he’s an everyman and as long as they don’t cast someone who couldn’t ever pass for a nerd, in the hands of the right director and hopefully with raimi producing, things should be ok.

…I’m sorry…I seem to be having trouble with my eyes…a Spider-Man MUSICAL?
possibly a worse idea than the LOTR musical (which is way up there in the history of profoundly bad ideas)…add Taymor…ugh - a vastly overrated director…she should be a production designer or art director…areas in which she has proven talent…
and the series of decisions that resulted in the unmitigated horror that is Across the Universe amounts to crimes against humanity - that the music of the Beatles survives unscathed (and will do so long after Taymor and everyone else involved is dust) is no compensation…
where is the demand for this? what vocal group of people have expressed a desire for a Spider-Man musical? those who read the comic? no. the toy/merchandise demographic? (8 year olds)? no.

Taymor is the perfect director for this. I personally thought Across The Universe was great, but LIon King is genius!
She really shines in the theatre.
I understand that Edge and Bono are writing the music, and that Jim and Evan already appeared in a workshop production for the money people.
Word is they both have the singing chops and would do anything for Taymor.

Personally, I think that Across the Universe is an amazing movie. I bought the soundtrack and Dvd as soon as they were released.
I do think that Jim and Evan have amazing chemisty together, but I’m not sure on a Musical of Spiderman.
It seems a but cheezy to me to make it into a musical, although, I would like to know what they end up with.

Much as I love Jim and Evan, a Spider-Man musical is a HORRIBLE idea. Can you picture some guy in a latex suit swinging on a building and singing SHOW TUNES? Neither can I. And I love musicals.

The musical sounds like an odd idea to me now.. but Julie Taymor has a brilliant mind! If she does go on with it, there’s no doubt it’ll be amazing. Especially with Bono and The Edge making the music. And I’d love to see Jim and Evan back together for another musical.

I loved ACROSS THE UNIVERSE… but c’mon a spiderman musical??? You could probably make it awesome too, but don’t do something that will ruin the reputation of Jim and Evan!! Best of Wishes to ur film!!! CIAO
