3D Movies

At least 5,000 3-D systems expected to be in place by 2009. DreamWorks Animation’s Jeffrey Katzenberg expects there to be 12 to 18 3D feature films by 2010. 3-D is clearly the future of cinema, at least for the near future. With the recent announcements of Tim Burton’s Alice and Wonderland/Frankenweenie, and today’s announcement of Final Destination 4 in 3D, we’ve decided to compile a schedule for the upcoming 3D movie releases. Enjoy!

2008:

January 25th 2008: U2 3D: Performances from seven different shows of U2’s Latin America Vertigo Tour in early 2006. Previews of this film have tested incredibly well.

February 15th 2008: Fly Me to the Moon: A computer animated tale of three young houseflies stow away aboard the Apollo 11 flight to the moon. Tim Curry, Nicollette Sheridan, Christopher Lloyd, Robert Patrick and Kelly Ripa voice characters.

July 11th 2008: Journey 3-D: Visual effects supervisor turned director Eric Brevig’s take on the classic Jules Verne novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth. Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson star.

October 2008: Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas: Disney has said they plan to rerelease the film around Halloween as long as it remains profitable.

Final Destination 4: Final Destination 2 director David R. Ellis returns to the franchise. Interestingly enough, Final Destination 3 was in development under the working title Final Destination 3-D, but the produces ultimately chose not to produce the movie in 3D due to costs and complications. This film might be pushed to 2009.

2009:

March 27th 2009: Monsters vs. Aliens: A reinvention of the classic ‘50s monster movie. Directed by Rob Letterman (Shark Tale).

May 22nd 2009:
James Cameron’s Avatar: A band of humans are pitted in a battle against a distant planet’s indigenous population. Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi star. $190 million budget.

October 2009: Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas: Disney has said they plan to rerelease the film around Halloween as long as it remains profitable.

November 6th 2009: A Christmas Carol: Has not been publicly confirmed as a 3D release, but the film will use the same performance capture technique Robert Zemeckis also used in Polar Express and Beowuld. The classic retelling will star Jim Carrey as Scrooge and the three ghosts. Tom Hanks, Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Bob Hoskins are also rumored to be on board the project.

November 20th 2009:
How to Train Your Dragon: Based on the 2003 children’s novel by British author Cressida Cowell, about the adventures of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III - The teenage son of a Viking chieftain, who must capture a dragon for a rite of passage.

Crood Awakening: A comedy set in the stone age directed by Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch)

TinTin: Directed by Peter Jackson or Steven Spielberg. The adventures of popular Belgian comic-strip hero Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy.

Tim Burton’s Alive in Wonderland: Screenplay by Linda Woolverton (The Lion King) based on the Lewis Carroll classic. Film will be combine performance-capture technology with live-action footage.

Deep Sea-quel: As the name suggests, a sequel to the popular 2006 3D documentary Deep Sea 3D. An underwater look at the diverse coastal regions of Southern Australia, New Guinea and the Indo-Pacific areas and the impact of global warming on the oceans. IMAX.

2010:

May 21st 2010: Shrek Goes Fourth: The further adventures of the giant green ogre, Shrek, living in the land of Far, Far Away. We will discover how Shrek arrived in that swamp. Not to be confused with Shrek 4-D which is a theme park attraction.

October 2010: Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas: Disney has said they plan to rerelease the film around Halloween as long as it remains profitable.

Fall 2010: Master Mind: A satirical take on superhero movies, in which a notorious villain loses his oomph after he accidentally kills his nemesis.

Untitled Tintin Sequel: Directed by Peter Jackson or Steven Spielberg. The continued adventures of popular Belgian comic-strip hero Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy.

Puss in Boots: A Shrek spinoff starring sword fighting cat voiced by Antonio Banderas. They haven’t officially announced this as a 3D title, but Jeffrey Katzenberg has said that all animated films released by Dreamworks after 2009 will be released in 3D.

2011:

TinTin 3: Directed by ????. Spielberg has said that he may direct this in collaboration with Peter Jackson, or that they might hire someone completely new. The continued adventures of popular Belgian comic-strip hero Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy.

In Development:

Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie: A feature length remake of his 1984 short film. A parody of the 1931 Frankenstein film. When young Victor’s pet dog Sparky is hit by a car, Victor decides to bring him back to life the only way he knows how. But when the bolt-necked “monster” wreaks havoc and terror in the hearts of Victor’s neighbors, he has to convince them and his parents, that despite his appearance, Sparky’s still the good loyal friend he’s always been. Burton will shoot the film using stop-motion animation.

Battle Angel
: James Cameron’s adaptation of the graphic novel about a female cyborg who is rescued from the scrapheap by a scientist, who becomes her surrogate father.

Star Wars: George Lucas has announced plans to remaster all of the Star Wars films in 3D. When this might actually happen is anyones guess.

Thanks /Film. Beowulf 3D is the best movie of the year without question.

Maybe I’m off on this one but…who cares? Tim Burton’s stuff sounds interesting, but I’d rather just watch it on a big digital screen. Screw 3D. There are some things you can bring back…bellbottoms, retro furniture, and the living dead…but 3D ain’t the frickin’ studio savior they think it is.

With all due respect Eddie, perhaps you should go view Beowulf at Imax before shooting down an entire new pathway for film. This is not retro 3d, this is highly advanced imagery and much of Beowulf is breaktaking. Beware of coming off like the old man who defended cassettes in wake of the CD.

When I said that it’s the best film of the year, to me it is because it provided me with an entirely new awesome experience in a theater - and even though I’ll champion NCFOM, Zodiac, TAJJBTCRB, Rescue Dawn, Lars and Real Girl, Juno and many other excellent films in a very strong year for cinema, none of them made me walk out of the theater questioning aesthetic reality like Beowulf.

Many are already calling its wke opening disappointing, but it sold out its 3D screens all wke and it will have longetivity like no other film this year. When someone enters a new realm and experiments there are so many decryers. Zemeckis kicked the ass of the Polar Express and I’m sure Avatar will do the same to Beowulf. But if you like popcorn entertainments as well as your high brows outings, you can’t beat the technology.

I know it sounds corny, but I seriously rode a dragon this weekend until I got vertigo, and no, I didn’t shoot heroin. If you haven’t seen Beowulf, you GOTTA SEE IT. TRUST ME.

As long as 3D cinema means wearing some form of glasses, I don’t see a bright future for this.
I went to Beowulf 3D, and while it was a good experience, the 3D stuff felt gimmicky, and only a few scenes stood out effect-wise.
This might be just me, but the glasses added some strain to the eyes, and I simply don’t see me watching more full-feature movies like this.

They should come out with 3d contacts.

Meh. I’ve never cared about 3d. I think it is a neat concept but frankly it DOES cause some strain and you have to keep taking them off and putting them back on - when I am watching a movie I like to sit back and enjoy it. If they want to come up with something “new” they should make more domed theaters, with full panoramic scenes. Now that would be cool.

On a side note - Can they please make Battle angel before 2012 when the world is gonna explode. That would be swell.

You know, that’s when this site truly shines. Every now and then you get a freak on the comment boards who doesn’t know how to truly express his/her case intelligently. Thank you for the intelligent post and response. While I still don’t think 3D is the new wave I certainly won’t knock Beowulf. Zemeckis is a very good storyteller and as a director tries new things (while I love Michael Bay’s visual style, it’s been done and copied a trillion times before). I will have to check this flick out now and truly find out what Zemeckis has done this time for the cinema experience.

@Jeff, The glasses that were at my Imax screening were specifically for Beowulf and are designed to be strain-free. I overheard an older guy ask this at the screening and the Imax employee said he should be fine. Of course, the human eye doesn’t experience Beowulf everyday, so you may have the “new contact” feeling when you walk out of the theater, but that harkens back to my second post. But to each his own. But would you rather not have the option to see movies in 3-D? Like rotoscoping, which I like less, I still would like the option and don’t grasp why people knock. I like seeing the Tamale falvor of ice cream, even though I’;ll only try it once.

@Eddie, sweet man. Yeah, I agree that /Film offers a path to good discourse. Besides the 3-D, Zemeckis has made the defintive midnight movie with Beowulf imo. It’s campy and takes the most potshots at oraganized religion of any Pg-13 movie I’ve seen - very adult material. For istance, Beowulf bangs his daughter in the film, even though it’s not directly stated. The crowd was like wtf. Also, something about 3-D and the more compact Imax seats make it a very communal experience, but people don’t use their cell devices as much when they’re wearing the glasses. Everyone at my showing was 20-30 which surprised me (it was the 9:30 pm showing). In a way it reminded me of seeing Rocky Horror. Hope you like it, but it’s def worth admission.

To be honest, I still really want to see Beowulf in 3d. I had the chance to catch the non 3d version this weekend and though I enjoyed it - from Peters comments here about how cool the 3d was on that flick, I am curious enough to pay to see it again in 3d.

I don’t think that it is something that will revolutionize the movie industry the way they say it will, and certainly not enough to make as big a push as they are going to be making - however, much the same as shock seats and smello-vision, it’s a neat concept and something that is worth one or two movies a year.

First of all; webmaster please fix the right colum ——————->

    Guys & Gals

I have only seen a few in 3d movies in my life. 3d Websites or games sure and often.

What I liked about the movie was the camera angle in the first 10 minutes was just unbelieveable…. Just imagine, the camera is at about 32 degrees move from the left to right… as it does you see
all kinds of things come into view as you are like in the camera lens itself and it is slowly, ever so slowly backing out of a zoomed in area.

The before credits say there are 6 more coming my next summer and they are all different… some are in this animated format and some are as you are in your world.. sounds pretty kewl is all I can say.

Made in the USA by Paramount Studios Hollywood California !

What a suckfest. Is 3D for jerkoffs only!?!?!?!

  11. Gravatar

PLEASE STOP MAKING MOVIES IN 3D!… or actually make them 3-D. I just hate 3-D movies! I’m blind in one eye so I can’t watch 3-D, which is really gay cause you need two eyes to do it. Oh well, I can’t help it…

  12. Gravatar

I hate 3D movies like Beowulf. But movies in 3D are awesome. I was lucky enough to get to see The Nightmare Before Christmas in Disney Digital 3D. It’s new and awesome. 3D glasses arent blue and red anymore, they look like shades! which is so awesome. It looks so real. So now, this may, Disney is releasing the first ever movie in 3D. It’s going to be Journey to the Center of the Earth starring Brenden Fraisier. You have to check it out! I know I will.
