The Cloverfield monster only shows up for a few frames in the new movie trailer. Check out the video below for a slowed down look.
To me it looks like a cross between a T-Rex and Godzilla. But I predict that you won’t see much more of the big monster in the actual film. It would be in JJ Abrams best interests to keep the monster hidden because whatever it may look like, however cool, it will never meet the fans expectations. I may be wrong, but I believe he best thing to do is to not show it.
Check out the video after the jump, what do you see?

November 20th, 2007 at 6:05 am
Hmm. It seems to be moving pretty smoothly… It’s legs move up while it’s body gildes across like it’s on a float!
My bet? It’s smoke.
November 20th, 2007 at 6:38 am
Oh come on it is Godzilla!! That was my first thought when I saw the preview at the movies and still think now. Anyone else think so to?
November 20th, 2007 at 6:50 am
Hmmmm…looks more like Bowser than Godzilla to me.
November 20th, 2007 at 7:24 am
I think It’s like a CrAb with tentacles. Or a mix between a Dinosaur and a Crab (With Tentacles)… OMG! iT’S LIKE CTHULHU!!!!!!! (Joke)
November 20th, 2007 at 7:28 am
JJ Already said its nothing like Godzilla and that it was a completely original and new monster. However I agree it would be in his best interest to NOT show the monster
November 20th, 2007 at 8:12 am
Actually the cthulu idea may not be far off, if you go to the follow site, there was a horror clix model of cthulu made up a while ago and the monsters body does look very similar to it.
Pic: http://www.wizkidsgames.com/wk_article.asp?cid=40709
From the image of the monster, the legs and large belly section seem to correspond between the model and image very well.
Anyway, regardless of cthulu or not, this movie should definately be interesting.
November 20th, 2007 at 8:14 am
it’s this guy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Call_of_Cthulhu
November 20th, 2007 at 8:27 am
CTHULHU!!!!
November 20th, 2007 at 8:33 am
I really dont know what is my actual take on this whole thing. Okay so I get what you mean by its in Abrams best interest in not showing the monster too much but fans have been anticipating this so much I think he kind of owes it to the fans to get a full view of this monster and some long sick action scenes with it in them. Honestly though it kind of does look like Godzilla to me but who knows?
November 20th, 2007 at 8:40 am
It looks like a glob of smoke. Maybe the actual ‘monster’ is just a glob of smoke. A glob of pollution.
November 20th, 2007 at 8:53 am
It can’t be Godzilla, the studio doesn’t own the rights. I agree that if this movie is being told from the perspective of regular people, then a full view of the monster may not be in the best interest of the film. I’d think we’d get plenty of looks at the “little monsters” since they are probably more human sized. In the end, I’m willing to trust Abrams judgement for now. He hasn’t let us down yet and I’m very anxious to see what he has in store for us.
November 20th, 2007 at 9:47 am
looks to me to be Sigmund the Seamonster after he was hit with gamma rays.
November 20th, 2007 at 10:11 am
What if it’s something from Gears Of War ? I wish it were but it wont be.

That is the monster, and it parasites go and infest people thats what was happening to that one woman in the new trailer and why those guys where wearing haz-mat suits
November 20th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
If you look closely at the bottom half of the video you can see the
monster’s spines that look exactly like the one’s on Godzilla. Even
though they don’t own the rights to Godzilla what are the chances
that these spines(which are a Gozilla signiture)could be on this new monster. I never thought it would be Godzilla but this video really has me thinking otherwise.
November 20th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
maybe its a guy in a contamination suit
November 20th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
IT’S A VOLTRON MOVIE!!! Lions will come from across the globe to smoke that ass!!…maybe.
November 20th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
Even if it isn’t a Godzilla film it atleast appears to be a massive creature with tremendous power. That Godzilla movie released back in ‘98 with Matt Broderick was aweful. The title of that movie should have been called ‘Giant Mutant Lizard Attacks Manhatten’ !
The Godzilla I know and love does not get stuck in a bridge and taken out by a couple of F-18’s ! I hope Cloverfield is our Godzilla, but done right this time. I believe Cloverfield will deliver with all the hype just like Transformers did last summer. Can’t wait !!!
November 20th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
did you draw that picture n00b_Sauce?
November 20th, 2007 at 1:40 pm
nah i found it on some forum
November 20th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
Just had someone on another forum confirm that the sketch is legit. SIGN ME UP! Though I’m bummed it got leaked.
November 20th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
I’m afraid we’re not going to see much of the monster. I think this movie is going to be a metaphor for the war on terror, just as Godzilla was an allegory for the “bomb”. I think there is a reason, more than just the shock value, why the Headless Statue of Liberty has been the most prominent image in the ad campaign so far. Regardless, I can’t wait to see this movie.
November 20th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
As much as i wish it would be Godzilla.. its not.. There is a huge hump on its back.. it walks like it but its not. Its so hard to tell what other details it has. It fades out at a couple frames.
November 20th, 2007 at 2:31 pm
today is november 20th, if anyone still thinks its godzilla, a lion, voltron, cthulu, or the sketch of the whale thing with lice parasites, then you deserve to be slapped repeatedly in the face. its none of those things. no matter what you think, its not. my money is on some kind of sea creature. not anything we have ever seen ever ever in the history of ever. so shut up about that
November 20th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
and there are no little monsters. there is some kind of disease that makes people inflate and explode. the “little monsters” that you guys are seeing are actually guys in contamination suits. its obvious based on looking at the photos from lizzy caplans interview. NOT little monsters. it is one big monster, who is bad ass. the beast is very close to chuck norris levels of ass kickery
November 20th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
no its defo not godzilla, its my uncle tommy, soon to be known to you as…tomilla..the mighty, and he’s real peeved about the killing of his sister..gerty..godzilla to you, and he’s out for ultimate vengence….mass destructsion..murderous mayhem…oh, and he’s dying for a slusho…..
November 20th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
Abrams himself confirmed the “parasite” based guessing during Comic-Con, so there is something to that. Wether they are smaller beasties or a disease or something else, remains to be seen. For once, I hope I don’t see the monster at all before going into the theater to see this. I get tired of having everything spoiled ahead of time… although I always look, so I have no one to blame but myself.
We need more giant monster movies, so let’s hope this one does well and they make more.
November 20th, 2007 at 5:40 pm
from what i’m seeing, the back of the head looks a lot like cthulu.
check it: http://www.summeroflovecraft.com/images/cthulhu-6.jpg

Obed Marsh Says:
November 20th, 2007 at 12:44 am
I will not let this disparaging of Cthulhu continue.
First, it is spelled C-T-H-U-L-H-U.
Second, Cthulhu neither wants to destroy the human race nor enslave it. Cthulhu regards us as we regard insects. When he awakens he will sweep us from the earth like a soft, pink infestation.
Third, Cthulhu does not spawn “Cthuli.†I don’t know where you heard that. Perhaps echoing out of your ass. “Call of Cthulhu†only makes reference to Cthulhu is High Priest of the Outer Gods, ruling over his “greasy spawn†in black R’lyeh. It is not known whether Cthulhu is a unique entity or simply the most powerful of a race of similar creatures. The Call of Cthulhu series of RPG books depicts a “Star Spawn of Cthulhu†which are like mini-Cthulhus, and presumably the creatures over which Cthulhu itself rules.
Fourth, Cthulhu is in hibernation in the pacific ocean. Unless New York has been relocated to the West Coast, this makes Cthulhu impossible.
Fifth, when Cthulhu and the other Great Old Ones awaken humanity will plunge into madness and destroy itself. There would be no need for him to galavant about our cities like Godzilla smashing statues. Cthulhu will outlive all examples of our civilization anyway.
Try reading Lovecraft’s stories some time.
[/quote]
its not Cthulhu
November 20th, 2007 at 7:22 pm
it looks like its on all 4’s.
November 20th, 2007 at 8:33 pm
That’s what I’m thinking, profeserk. It’s tough to judge from a mere few seconds worth of film, but I can’t help but notice that the body seems as if it’s leaned forward.
Either it’s on all fours or hunched in a lumbering walk.
(LOL For all we know, it could be an attack from a long lost underwater city. “Atlantis Attacks!”)
November 20th, 2007 at 10:36 pm
I don’t really see Godzilla in that slo-mo. What I see is more insect-like with two prominent legs that are long, scrunched-up and skinny. The body looks bug-like too, but I can’t think of the name of the bug it reminds me of though. Just my two cents.
November 20th, 2007 at 10:38 pm
Well, from what I can tell, it has to be walking on atleast 4 legs and looks plain creepy. Like Abraham said, it is a totally new monster, so although it can bare resemblance to others, it will be something totally new. Well I hope that it is something like I have never seen before.
November 20th, 2007 at 11:56 pm
I also think it’s some insect… although it aso has reptile features (oh no!)… I don’t want a second godzilla….
November 21st, 2007 at 6:41 am
It does look like a giant green insect to me, the back of it looks like a spiders abdomen & the front of it looks like a triceratops/euoplocephalus with giant lobster pincers. So it’s basically a mix of a grasshopper, spider, dinosaur and a lobster.
FUN!
November 21st, 2007 at 9:28 am
cloverfield = fail
November 21st, 2007 at 10:13 am
If you look at the Slusho.jp website and read the history..
November 21st, 2007 at 11:33 am
From the looks at the clip, I personally think that JJ Abrams wants us to believe that it is Godzilla or some sort of creature like Godzilla, but i do sence som sort of wings, and something moving in upright position. But certainly I am to watch the movie, whether they reveal the monster or not!
November 21st, 2007 at 4:46 pm
Nice try with the sketch and the rant about CTHULHU noob sauce, but that is not the creature from the movie. The truth is no one knows and probably wont find out until the movie comes out. As for whether or not it could be Cthulhu or some version of him it is very possible as the story by Lovecraft is comprised of three different, personal accounts from citizens. The trailers so far are exactly that, accounts left behind by citizens. So it very well could be an INTERPRETATION of Lovecraft’s story of Cthulhu.
November 22nd, 2007 at 4:48 pm
“I sense some sort of wings”
(I’m rolling my eyes at you right now lol) You think you “sense” wings because in the back of your mind you want it to have wings
November 22nd, 2007 at 9:12 pm
Well it definately has human like hands-hence the claw marks it left behind on the back of the Statue Of Liberty and the side of one of those buildings on the poster. It doesn’t look like that sketch in the video-just seems too small framed. The legs almost move like a praying mantis or maybe even a gecko-they arch and are slender.I agree with DOOMDOUBTER it could still be an “INTERPRETATION” of CTHULHU.Hey, this is Hollywood. When have they been known to adapt anything exactly like it’s source material??
November 22nd, 2007 at 9:51 pm
In the slow-mo it almost looks at one point like you can see horns on it’s back like Godzilla’s trademark row,but it also looks like the street lights are hitting something above the figure that’s smooth like wings or a shell or the back of a large CTHULHU like head????It has almost a reptilian appearance to it’s skin, but it’s got too skinny of legs to be Godzilla-unless it’s a sequel to the 1998 film.It does have the same monster designer and it’s about to be the 10th. anniversary of that film. They did say there would be a sequel but this is a different company-still TOHO could do something like this.Especially since they’re not making films with the character right now.It just seems that there would be merchandise like toys if it were Godzilla, unless TOHO didn’t want that. Can we trust that J.J. was telling us the truth that it’s an all new original creation,or was that just another way of throwing us off??CTHULHU would be pretty new to the general public. They have definitely left us with the hardest pic they could. We know we’re not gonna figure it out but still we try anyways.
November 23rd, 2007 at 8:16 am
That looks like Angurius this like armadilo monster from godzilla
November 24th, 2007 at 2:09 am
I think it is a alien mosnter with great power
nothing new or big deal, but it distroys our symbol of liberty
what does that mean?
that it’s the end of it all.
Now explain how do we win?
or what is the meanig of the movie?
the end of the world?
November 24th, 2007 at 2:21 am
is this creature for real? just asking, because I am intrested in criptozoology, and this is something I have never heard of, anyways it did look sort of like Cthulu, I think he/she/it is pretty cool.
November 24th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
i have a feeling it came from the water.. it kinda seems like the statue of liberty is the beginning of the attack, and in the new poster u can see water tracks heading from the statue to the city. just my 2 cents ;]
November 25th, 2007 at 8:35 pm
Man dun ju people see it iz a scientifcally mutated dinosaur look closy n ju could see da clawz n a face dat lookz lyke a spinosaurus well we will jus hab 2 wait n see
November 26th, 2007 at 9:37 am
i rekon its a fraggle - - and i rekon theres more than 1 -
November 26th, 2007 at 11:42 am
OMG! It is JJ Abrams BIG FAT HEAD with crab like legs.
November 27th, 2007 at 3:52 pm
it could be something with plates.. it looked to me like it was plated, like armor or a shell or something, and i did see a horn like thing, so maybe its a kind of shelled creature, or has a touch exoskeleton… its not cthulullhlu. its just not, and its not anything we have seen like a godzilla monster enemy or a pokemon, or any kind of novel. if it is, then JJ is a liar. or he was very misleading, which is characteristic of him, but this type of misleading doesnt seem like him. slusho is a major clue, he is trying to tell us that, and i bet there is another website out there that stems from slusho… we already saw the article about the research done on slusho and its strange side effects, so we have something there. we just need to focus on that, and figure out where it all leads… if you dont know what im talkin about, check the investors info on tagruato.jp
November 27th, 2007 at 3:53 pm
i meant to say TOUGH exoskeleton, not touch
November 27th, 2007 at 4:30 pm
btw, there is another update to tagruato.jp talking about Slusho! workers visiting an animal control shelter… maybe a clue?
November 27th, 2007 at 10:00 pm
C’mon people……….. Its the Staypuffed Marshmellow MAN!!!!!!!
November 27th, 2007 at 11:47 pm
A shit load of people said it was going to be Zilla before they even showed the monster. Now they finally showed the monster and guess what??!!??!? It looks exactly like Zilla.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:49 pm
Not Godzilla! The Original Zilla.
November 28th, 2007 at 12:02 am
ur all a bunch of crackheadz. u can’t see a damn thing in that stupid video. u r all seeing what u wanna see. stupid crackheadz
November 28th, 2007 at 7:43 am
ok, its deff. not godzilla, the godzilla trademark is untill 2013
meaning NO GODZILLA UNTILL ATLEAST 2013
The most likely monster (and im not saying this is what it is) Is cathulhu, but its not even that because this monster has never be done, and im not gunna lie, this monster looks pretty bad ass
November 28th, 2007 at 8:26 am
thank you syfers, thats exactly why we KNOW it isnt godzilla or zilla.. i think that anyone who still says its godzilla is probably like 10 years old, so im just gonna stop saying anything about it, but i think the moderator should just remove their idiotic posts, or at least start one for kids… whats the deal with heroes? they keep drinking slusho, and i want one
November 28th, 2007 at 8:31 am
everyone should forget about what the monster is, the real mystery is why its here, and where it came from. the monster is original, so we cant figure it out without some kind of leak or pyschic attack on jj himself
November 28th, 2007 at 1:35 pm
they better frikin show it. that be like never seein the shark in Jaws
November 28th, 2007 at 2:46 pm
what is wrong with you course they will show the monster everyone wants to see it you fanny
November 29th, 2007 at 4:33 pm
I just want to see it destroy everything and kill a lot of people.
November 29th, 2007 at 6:30 pm
it’s the prequel to the halo movie in 2009
there are little creatures, like when they say in the trailer “what is that?” and you here something from the creature and they start running…it’s the flood from halo. The flood can transform people, hence that girl expanding under contamination.
i’m not going to lie i just made this up but i dunno it sounds pretty right…i may not have explained the big monster but there is no point because everyone will shit on me :)
November 29th, 2007 at 6:31 pm
its the flood from halo
November 29th, 2007 at 8:55 pm
it seems to have spines comparable to sonic but could be easily mistaken for his mouth. In a way they resemble the dreadlocks from the Predetor; it could very well be a modernized Cthulhu with Godzilla traits
November 30th, 2007 at 9:10 am
its not halo, even though that idea would be cool. halo is in the future, and there was already a halo movie in the works, but they decided not to go through with it for now.. so yeah, not the flood.. i used to think it was cthulu, but that was before he said it was original… a lot of clues seem to point to cthulu, but no, it isnt that either. its supposedly a brand new monster
December 1st, 2007 at 7:54 pm
after seeing the sketch from noobsauce, and watching the trailers, it reminded me of the monster called Sin in the videogame Final Fantasy X, does anyone else see this that’s played the game? Cloverfield has a strong resemblance to Sin.
December 2nd, 2007 at 3:02 am
I can’t really tell much of what the monster looks like from that video clip. It does look like the monster pulls itself forward along the ground. This makes sense as well with movie poster, because you can see the trail the monster left from the water into the city. There are no foot prints.
Something else…notice the path the monster in the water of the movie poster. The water looks like it was frozen, or the monster is so massive that it dug a trench into the ocean floor. Also, as soon as the trail reaches the city, everything is engulfed in flames. Wouldn’t it be interesting if this monster has the ability to freeze or burn things around it?
Kind of reminds me of that poem ‘Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost
Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice..
December 2nd, 2007 at 8:17 am
Hey check it out!!The Asylum Pictures has finally added a trailer ,poster and more pics for their rip-off/clone film MONSTER.It was originally titled:TOKYO.It’s due out on 1-15-08.Their monster is clearly a giant octopus/squid.The film has a similar basis-just takes place in Tokyo,Japan. It is seen through the eyes of two filmmakers, who happen to be there after what was supposedly a massive earthquake, instead of just regular people with a video cam.It looks fun enough.
December 2nd, 2007 at 9:26 pm
I still think it’s a mutated variation of this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_isopod
The way it reproduces and carries its young is interesting.
December 2nd, 2007 at 9:29 pm
I think it’s a giant isopod. The way it carries it’s young is interesting. Google it.
December 2nd, 2007 at 9:42 pm
I also find this scientific tendency interesting regarding the film’s plot.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep-sea_gigantism
December 4th, 2007 at 5:39 am
like i said before, its not anything that has ben done before…
Its pretty much made up form scratch, possibly inspired by certain monsters (such as cthulhu) and i presoanlly think they should atleast show the monster in whole once, thats all i’ll personally need. lol
December 4th, 2007 at 6:24 pm
I think that a lot of you guys should really just chill-out.We are getting our hopes up too high now.It could still actually be a fantastic film, but a lot of you guys aren’t gonna even give it a chance if it’s not what you expected. It probably isn’t “Godzilla” or “Cthulhu”or anything that we’ve guessed so far.We probably won’t be able to guess what it is.Like J.J. said;it’s an entirely new type of creature never before seen.OK.Still sounds really cool to me.Isn’t this a first time director??Do you expect a masterpiece from every first timer??Those are extremely high standards!!We should just assume that it will be a fun new kaiju film with a few new twists.Maybe it will surprise-that would be great.I just hope that people will give it a chance and not judge it so harshly because of it’s ad campaign and all this insane hype.
December 4th, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Avery, i agree 110%
and im sure it will be great
December 6th, 2007 at 11:28 am
i think it is a mutated lizard, like Godzilla, but much smaller and infested with parasites
December 6th, 2007 at 11:03 pm
he better show the monster, im only gonna pay 10 bucks to see the movie so i can see the monster
December 6th, 2007 at 11:42 pm
Okay so if any of you bloggers are familiar with the game Rampage “Cloverfield” is the name of a level out of the game. In the game there were 3 different monsters. The first one being a King-Kong like Gorilla named George, a Godzilla like dinosaur/lizard names Lizzy, and and a giant Werewolf named Ralph. These three monsters were created from humans who were mutated by various methods. If you notice the scene where there is a woman behind a curtain screaming and being held down and what sounds like killed, you’ll notice that she is in the mutation mode about to transform into one of the Monsters. (watch that part of the trailer very slowly and you’ll notice that she is starting to grow bigger) This is a Rampage MOVIE!!
If you want to know more about the game in detail hit up wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rampage_(arcade_game)
December 7th, 2007 at 7:53 am
just stop
its not rampage, thats a creative thought but…..no
not in a million years
December 7th, 2007 at 11:06 am
haha lol u guys fail, its Bowser. its a prequel to the 1991 film “Super Mario Bro’s”.
but good try’s
December 7th, 2007 at 1:18 pm
syfers go online and read the reasons why it will be a rampage movie. I’m not making up some elaborate thought. I’m telling you it’s going to be a Rampage movie son.
December 8th, 2007 at 5:13 pm
its deffinitly the whale thing… it fits the description of the parasites confirmed by abrahams… AND it looks like its on all 4s or hunched over
the whale thing is hunched over but still balances cuz of the tails
ALSO the whale thing is the only thing long enough to smack the statue of liberty’s head THAT far
December 9th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
I’m just waiting to see exactly how this creature will be able to stand up to the pounding from a couple of bunker busting 2,000lb laser guided smart bombs. Outside of a city, this thing, whatever it is, will be easily beaten unless it has magic or something.
I really don’t want it to be this Cthulu thing, but it looks like an uneaten Calamari and just ‘lame’ as hell. I don’t want any other monster than Godzilla,,,because you know…Ol ‘Z’ would kick this thing’s a$$…
December 9th, 2007 at 7:03 pm
I don’t care anymore! I just want to see the flick already! Although I hate to say it, it looks like Gamera. I think its going to be some kind of Dragon-like thing though, with no previous monster to compare to. Personally, though I hope its the monster from the book of Revelation.
December 10th, 2007 at 6:42 am
if the monster aint shown then i aint watching it, look i know alot of people will say oowwww u dont go to film jus to see monster but i mean come one how bored are u going to be and all ul do is try look for it whole movie then how pissed will u be if u never see it! not a movie to talk about to be honest
December 10th, 2007 at 9:11 pm
yea
December 11th, 2007 at 5:29 am
pretty sure its not rampage, if it was rampage that would mean more than one monster right?
and pretty much everyone agree’s that there is one monster.
If it is a rampage movie why not name it rampage besides the fact that it would make a retarded movie name?
I dont think its guna be rampage related at all and that just my personall thought
and even if it is its still going to be a good movie, and i personally think that if they are doing rampage, they should use the wolf monster, taht would b sic
December 13th, 2007 at 11:09 am
my speculation is that it is some form of mutated whale. there are clues all over that will probably make sense after the movie is out. go to the slusho site and read under history. it talks about the founder of slusho being made fun of and called the tiniest “whale”.
December 13th, 2007 at 11:47 am
it could be, but i think its a giant isopod.. someone mentioned it before, and it is possible.. if you look at a giant isopod, and then look at the poster for cloverfield, and mirror it, the clouds form the shape of a giant isopod. also, it could explain the fact that its from the sea, and stuff.. i dont know, it doesnt esplain the claw marks, so it could be anything, maybe just a totally new thing.. we’ll see soon enough
December 13th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
so Syfers when it comes out to be a Rampage movie what will you owe me?
December 13th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
Watching the slow-mo clip I think it looks like a giant hand closing in on something. You can even see what looks like a thumb at first. Whatever the thing is, J.J. has sure gotten everyone interested in the film by simply getting everyone trying to second guess what it is about. Hell of a marketing ploy I have to say.
Watching the clip is liking watching Lost and watching the clip of Jacob over and over to see what he or it was.
December 13th, 2007 at 4:21 pm
ill admit i was wrong, even tho im prettys sure im not
December 13th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
if it were infact a rampage movie, why not just call it rampage?
and also this monster is far too big to be a rampage monster, in rampage the monsters were mabie 20 ft tall, climing up small buildings and pickcing up single people, and if by some chance u are right and it is a rampage spin off or whatever ill admit im wrong, even tho im sure im not
December 13th, 2007 at 11:04 pm
Looking at its legs in the video, I got the distinct impression of a frog or some other amphibian. Those knee joints do look like frog’s legs….

December 18th, 2007 at 8:24 pm
what if they dont even show the monster during the whole movie
December 18th, 2007 at 9:02 pm
I can’t make out anything meaningful in that brief clip, and I think you are all projecting your fantasies onto it. It looks like a classic example of what I call the “blur and jerk” style of cinematography used to cover up lousy creatures in movies such as “Kingdom of the Ants.” The budget for this film was only $30 million, so what do you expect? With CGI replacing opticals, art directors and special effects technicians are free to make special-effects scenes so dark and drab that you completely lose sight of everything except for a vague impression that something awful is happening in the murk. Give me the lousy opticals of 1960’s monster movies, where you could at least see what was going on!
December 19th, 2007 at 5:52 am
the point of the clip is to show us that pretty much everything weve thoguth about the timeline based on the trailer is worng, because 90% of the stuf weve payed atention too is in that first 5 minuets right there
December 19th, 2007 at 8:36 am
also, kevin and malcolm, if you read about the interview with the director, he says we will get to see a lot. so it wont be, or shouldnt be, hidden or blurred or anything.
December 19th, 2007 at 8:49 am
i have been meaning to say this.. its not rampage. there is no way it is, at all. i have followed this since the day i went to see transformers. if there was some kind of shift in the fabric of time and space, and it turned out to be rampage, than i would cry.
December 19th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
i have no idea what the cloverfield monster is, but i did notice something alot of people have not. “i saw it, it’s alive it’s huge” was the quote from the first trailer ” I saw it, and its alive” was said in a store in the second trailer now for alot of people you were like this isn’t important but think about it, it is said in both trailers. now the point if you saw something moving, breathing, destroying, and making noises no shit it’s alive, but why is everyone so supprised that it is alive unless it was something that everyone thought was dead? now i know all this zilla stuff everyone saying it’s not him it is him personally i don’t think it is zilla but alot of signs point to zilla and alot of signs point away from zilla this whole thing is just confusing zilla died in the end of the american godzilla movie now hes back and somehow bigger? maybe but i doubt it. but just take the time to listen to whats being said insted of whats being shown. and listen to when the guy in the store says “i saw it, and it’s alive” he pauses between the “it” and the “and” like he knew what it was he just couldn’t get over the fact that it was alive. the word “it’s” can stand for a couple things he could mean “it’s alive” like he has no idea what it is or he could mean it like “It’s alive” like he knew what it was
December 19th, 2007 at 5:48 pm
IT IS CTHULHU…WELL AT LEAST IT IS BASED ON CTHULHU..BECAUSE HE COMES OUT OF THE WATER LIKE GODZILLA BUT SEEING AS ABRAMS SAID THAT IT WASNT ZILLA THEN I THINK THAT IT IS BASED ON CTHULHU ALSO CUZ HE SAID IT WAS HIS OWN MONSTER
December 19th, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Ok,he says:”I saw it,it’s alive,it’s huge” because if you really watch and pay attention to the clip-he sees the monster right after the Statue O Liberty’s head passes by-while everyone else are too distracted taking pictures of the S.O.L.’s head.He asks them all:”did ya see that”?They just ignore him, then the building tumbles down ,they run into the store, and he finally gets to tell them that he saw it, it’s alive, it’s huge-to let them know that it was a living creature he saw that ’s causing the destruction.
December 20th, 2007 at 3:18 am
Looks sorta like a massive frog to me
December 20th, 2007 at 5:35 am
thank you big daddy & Avery for giving sain and good ideas, unlike prettymuch everyone else
December 20th, 2007 at 8:25 am
louis, your own message contradicts itself. are you doing it on purpose to make my nose bleed? i will say it again, its a completely new original never before seen monster.. your message says its cthulu, which is lovecrafts monster, and then you say its abrams own monster, whats wrong with you? regardless of all that, cthulu actually has its own movie already, its just not that popular…. and its not a giant frog. it would make giant ribbit sounds, now roars. go back to the kiddie blogs
December 20th, 2007 at 8:35 am
not roars**
December 20th, 2007 at 8:40 am
At the end of the day - it dont matter what or who the poxy monster looks like really - lets just hope its a good film with a decent story line and some good characters, and not a film that leaves u wanting more at the end -
December 20th, 2007 at 11:52 am
i’m not going to speculate on what it is. most likely, i’de be wrong. but i will say this; it’s said to be alien. doesn’t mean it’s from another planet. “alien” implies something that is beyond our realm of knowledge.
“a new and original monster”? genetic manipulation anyone?
check out tagruato.jp under “medical research”.
read the “history of slusho” articles on the slusho home page pertaining to the “deep sea magic ingredient” that makes slusho so irisistable.
both sites are connected to the film. both sites are specificaly designed to drop subtle hints as to what the “cloverfield monster” is, or atleast were it came from.
WHATEVER it is, something in the “slusho” created it.
as for the “rampage” theorists; someone should look up the stuff the humans took to become the monsters from the original game. maybe there’s a clue there.

December 22nd, 2007 at 5:33 pm
in the sci-fi mag article matt reeves i believe is one being interviewed and he states that you do see a clear shot of the monster
December 22nd, 2007 at 9:50 pm
I really don’t know what in the blue blazes of hell this thing is it could be Godzilla, it could be Cthulhu, hell it could be ET all grown up we just don’t know what i do know it that this better be out of the normal i don’t want to see this big monster die by the armys hands i want to finaly see a movie where the hero dies or loses and the beast just lets all hell lose burning destroying and killing and in the end everyone in Manhattan is dead there is almost nothing left and he gets away to go back to sleep or to destroy another city whatever i just want to see the good guy lose for once and the big bad monster to win and leave New York in shambles
December 22nd, 2007 at 10:25 pm
Amen Bryce! Amen…
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:20 am

December 23rd, 2007 at 9:41 am
you guys are gonna be so pissed off when it turns out to be Bowser lol.
oh well spoils of war man.
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:35 pm
I will be v dissappointed if its Godzilla for the simple fact that the last movie was so terrible,it almost put me off monster movies forever.Better if its a totally original creation, also if the movie keeps us on tenterhooks ,brief glimpses will work best to ratchet up the tension. The sound effects in the trailer, apart from the visuals, keep you totally transfixed….heres hoping that a film with such a stunning trailer can live up to the hype
December 23rd, 2007 at 1:29 pm
it is big time godzilla you can even see the spikes and godzilla was our first guess when we saw the 01-18-08 trailer
December 23rd, 2007 at 4:11 pm
i do not understand why people think this is a Godzilla movie.
December 23rd, 2007 at 7:47 pm
i think it def. looks like sin off of final fantasy 10
December 23rd, 2007 at 9:41 pm
Watch this video and then consider that the monster is not passing to the right but is backing up from the left…when you look at it from a different point of view you tend to see something you may not have seen before.
December 24th, 2007 at 1:29 am
Ok…just throwing my two cents in.
Your all wrong..
First here are my theorys.
1. The “its alive” part, mabey the monster was trapped inside the statue of libirtys base? Or…there is a statue or something that people are saying its alive!!!!.
2. Its a mutated creature that attacks and destroys the city (It was confirmed everyone dies) The Creature unleashes Parasites onto people by biting (During one of the trailers they yell: IT BIT HER…)
Now for some ideas?
1. The movie is called cloverfield, not..whatever!
2. Its going to have barney in it (Jks)
3… I wish I kenw what I was talking about
December 24th, 2007 at 1:46 pm
I think it is Voltron … In the teaser trailer it sounds like somebodys says … “I saw it, it’s a lion , it’s huge”. That could definately be VOLTRON!
December 24th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
chris, are you joking? because if you arent, you are a flucking idiot
December 24th, 2007 at 10:22 pm
looks like a big ass predalien. that’d be gay.
December 25th, 2007 at 12:09 am
Ok people you all gotta chill a bit lol. No need to express your exasperation here i mean common. A lil childish and stupid if you ask me. Anyways from what i know and have found out heres what i think.
I think its going to be on four legs, big……very big, and possibly originate from the ocean. Not sure though. Its not this Cthulhu thing or Godzilla. In the trailer it does give a hint as to what it might look like. If you notice one of the people screams “Its a Lion its huge!”
This makes me think its going to be on four legs. Another thing is that seeing as the Statue of Liberty is attacked, it might originate from the ocean. It looks as if it all starts there in Liberty Island.
As for the lil monsters theory well idk…..still undecided about that. Its definetly a possibility. Very strong posibility too. Im going fifty-fifty on it. Not enough evidence i guess lol to either prove or disprove. I doubt its that monster in the drawing either. Too me its to big. If it was that size then it wouldnt just have ripped off the Statue of Libertys head, it would have torn the whole damn Statue off and threw it!
Well thats all i can say. Whatever it is im sure this is going to be a freaking awesome movie! XD
December 25th, 2007 at 9:34 pm
I did some research on what creature it could be and I came up with this monster (Cthulhu). Google imaging also gives a great perspective on the monsters size and shape related to the slow-mo movie.
The most detailed descriptions of Cthulhu in “The Call of Cthulhu” are based on statues of the creature. One, constructed by an artist after a series of baleful dreams, is said to have “yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature…. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings.”[7] Another, recovered by police from a raid on a murderous cult, “represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind.”[8]
When the creature finally appears, the story says that the “thing cannot be described”, but it is called “the green, sticky spawn of the stars”, with “flabby claws” and an “awful squid-head with writhing feelers”. The phrase “a mountain walked or stumbled” gives a sense of the creature’s scale.[9]
The star-spawn of Cthulhu, or Cthulhi, have a physical simility with Cthulhu himself, but are of far smaller size. This race arrived with him, but relatively little is known about them. On earth they built the city R’lyeh, which later sank in the ocean(possibly near New York..lol), and where they still dwell with Cthulhu. A few are rumored to have escaped this incident, and can be found in hidden places on Earth(such as New York!!).
I havent seen any other comments posted on this guy but if there are let me know guys! I just thought it would be a good guess.
December 25th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
My bad guys!! Cthulhu is brought up alot in previous comments but I provided a buttload of info. on him to try and show why I think its Cthulhu.
December 25th, 2007 at 9:55 pm
I believe I have come up with a conclusion. It is not Godzilla and it is not Cthulhu, but it is a mix of both monsters. Im not talking about something stupid like godzilla with wings or Cthulhu that can breath fire, but a monster with a basis on both. JJ can stay within his claim of the monster being his own by basing his ideas around other monsters “Of that size” (because it would be stupid to make a giant alien) It would be very hard to come up with a monster “Of that size” that is TOTALLY different from all the others. We’ve already seen that is has flesh and muscle and is very large, and it may possibly breath fire (as seen from the large explosion in the clip). It can also distribute itself in smaller form (a trait that is carried by Cthulhu). Whatever this thing is…..it is going to win some awards!
December 26th, 2007 at 1:48 am
A Gargoyle?
December 26th, 2007 at 9:16 am
Whatever it is, I hope that it is indestructible like a giant monster should be. The last Godzilla movie was a joke. In Godzilla Final Wars, he was the first to be destroyed by the “Real” Godzilla. Japan mocked us for producing such a lame movie. I hope that Abrams put his money and talent into something to be proud of, with lots of sequels to look forward to.
December 26th, 2007 at 5:12 pm
It look like a monster made out of rock.
December 26th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Gamera? Looks liek a shell on the back…
December 26th, 2007 at 8:25 pm
Someone said it’s walking on all fours. No way. Look at the leg motion (you can see the left leg supporting the weight for the right that is moving through the building that’s falling).
There DOES seem to be something small, as well, though. When they are running through the sewer, something is chasing them.
It is New York City, after all. Maybe giant, black death carrying, rats?
December 27th, 2007 at 12:54 pm
Why do they say “its alive?” If it was a giant creature I’m sure it wouldn’t surprise them that it was alive?
I’m thinking that its something like a cuttlefish type thing that has properties that hide it.
Like this Octopus although I don’t think it will be an octopus or a cuttlefish. But something with similar qualities.

December 27th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
you guys are looking into the ITS ALIVE thing too much, they say it because they want people to know its a monster, and not a machine or a natural phenomenon, or a UFO or something like that.
December 27th, 2007 at 7:22 pm
I’ve seen the picture-
It’s a giant whale with several “lobster-like” feet. Freaky thing too.
December 28th, 2007 at 8:59 am
no its not, thats fan art, if you do minimal research, or if you look around on this site, you would know that

December 29th, 2007 at 11:37 am
If anyone else says the guy in the trailer yells “It’s a lion, its huge” is a jackass. He said ITS ALIVE AND ITS HUGE…meaning no giant robots or voltrons.
December 29th, 2007 at 11:49 am
All I can say is…I hope it’s tied into the Bloop.

Has anyone considered that it is none of what is mentioned above?
I can think of a technology that I have recently begun working on that could produce both a giant monster and exploding girls who swell up:
Nanites (Nanotechnology).
JJ Is known for having pretty long sight when it comes to some things…
Maybe this is some form of Alien Nano-tech that has gone nutso.
The picture fits. a nanite swarm that assembles bits of DNA into some sort of carrier for it (The nanites have the same instructions as DNA: Replicate), and then when it finds a suitable bit of organic soup to consume (a person for instance) it will inject them with some nanites and they then swell up and explode into smaller “mini-monsters”
After all… Hasn’t anyone read in the clip “Multiple sights of the case “Cloverfield”…”
Go work in Hollywood a short while… Get to know some screen-writers, and then it becomes a lot easier to take apart a movie.
As one TV show used to say: “The truth is out there”… It just happens to be very easy to get people to believe a lie. Often easier than it is to get people to believe the truth. Occam’s Razor would be a lot more widely known if that wasn’t the case.
I am not claiming to have the truth here… Just a possible interpretation of what is in the movie
December 31st, 2007 at 10:47 am
All I can say is Abrams is a smart guy - what better way to hype a monster movie than to NOT show the freakin “monster”!? Humans beings by nature WANT/NEED to know and will tear each other apart on these message boards wanting to be right about something NOBODY can know and those who do ain’t talking for fear of a lawsuit from JJ. I think that the movie will be anti-climatic once the monster is really revealed…typical monster movie from there folks…heck maybe we’re all part of a big joke and even during the movie the monster won’t fully be revealed? What better way to CONTINUE the hype?! Can you say “Sopranos”? ‘Lost
