Superman Screenwriters Not Returning for Sequel

Superman Returns

Superman Returns screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris have opted not to come back and pen a sequel, according to Variety. What does this mean about the future of Superman? Will Bryan Singer soon depart from the project? The duo also worked with Singer on X2: X-Men United, and Trick ‘r Treat (which Brian produced). I wouldn’t be surprised to hear later this week/month that Singer has also left the project. The writing already seems to be on the walls.

Warner Bros is now taking story pitches for Man of Steel. This is very interesting since it was always assumed that script, or at least treatment had been laid out. Months before going into production on Valkyrie, Singer’s camp had made some public comments about how well the preproduction on a Man of Steel was going. But now things have dramatically changed. I wonder if the studio was unhappy with Dougherty and Harris’ take on Man of Steel? They clearly were not happy with Superman Returns. A lot of fans were unhappy with Singer’s film, primarily due to it’s lack of action, casting decisions and the Superkid storyline.

Many people around Hollywood believe that the studio would like to “start fresh with a new take on the Man of Steel, as if the previous pic never happened.” Some rumors claim that the studio is interesting in replacing Returns star Brandon Routh and pulling a reboot/remake, much like Universal are doing with The Incredible Hulk.

Update: Comic Book writer Mark Millar has announced that he will pitch for the Superman sequel.

I think this is a huge mistake. If one thing Superman Returns was good for, it was as a set-up for future films. I do agree with many fans that the “superkid” storyline should have never happened. But I believe clever storytelling could not only fix this, but could propell the series in a wonderful new direction. One problem I’ve always had with Superman is that he is invincible and unstoppable. If Superkid were to suffer a fatal injury (how? that isn’t for me to decide) early into Man of Steel, this could set up a new more vulnerable Superman and a story of revenge.

But Warner Bros is denying reboot plans despite the Hollywood rumors, and the studio insists that Brandon Routh will likely return as the Man of Steel.

So let’s hear your pitch! If you were going to write the Superman Sequel, what would happen?

I liked Superman Returns, but one of the major problems was Kevin Spacey. He was completely, horribly wrong for Lex Luthor.

Actually, now that I think about it, Kate Bosworth was not right for Lois, either. The movie had casting issues.
  • Rob
I really, really hope this film still gets made. From what Singer promises, it sounds like the one we've all been waiting for.
  • Spacey was amazing as Luthor! I totally disagree, Jamie.

As long as it's not a reboot, I trust the folks in charge.
  • Chris
Superman Returns was a waste of a ludicrously large budget; nothing really happened in it. Why won't they give us Darkseid? Maybe he could kill the Superkid in the next movie - that would be sweet.
  • UK Kezz
I liked Superman Returns but I was left wanting
more action, especially knowing that Singer
can direct good action. Give Supes somthing
to fight in the next film.
  • Deb
Reboot! And Superman should never be about revenge. He ain't Batman!
The cast was terrible. The writing was terrible. The drab look of the film was terrible. Hey, Sam Raimi is looking for a new gig. James Cameron is finally back in the saddle. The Wachowskis are forging into PG territory. Peter Jackson has some free time. There are a world of possibilities out there.
  • EJ
I think for the sequel, Lex Luthor should be a minor villain, or at least be the catalyst for the arrival of a new, super-powered villain such as Metallo, Darkseid, Doomsday or even Zod. While I loved Superman Returns, it did have it's dull moments, especially with too much screen time and focus given to Kevin Spacey (ala Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's Batman). Also, the introduction of a son fathered by the Man of Steel muddles the story and continuity a bit, and could prove troublesome in future installments. Lastly, the characterization of Lois Lane feels a bit off, in that she is totally indifferent and at times downright rude to Clark, which was not the case in the Christopher Reeve films with Margot Kidder, which depicted Lois and Clark as having a close, friendly relationship outside of the Daily Planet.
  • KEL
Routh WON'T be replaced,as he was not the problem. The biggest problem was the stupid, stuip,STUPID superkid thing. It really made Superman look like a bastard,or perhaps I should say it made the kid a bastard. It's nothing against the actor who layed the kid,he's cute guy,but that whole subplot screwed up the movie. Spacey was an awesome Luthor,Brandon was a GOOD Superman (he's got LOTSA potential),even Bosworth was tolerable as Lois. The film needs MORE action!! I wanna see supes punching Braniac or Mettalo or Parasite or Mongul or Darkseid or Doomsday or SOMETHIN"!!! For the lovea God,he's the most KICK-ASS hero around, and he doesn't get ta fight SOMETHIN"?!!! WTF?! Instead,in SR,Singer had him get his ass kicked by 4 two-bit thugs and some kryptonite......again.

If the sequel is a reboot,I definitely want Routh and Spacey back, and I don't want the suit to be changed much if they change it,and I DEFINITELY want John William's Superman theme to be used like it was in SR!!!!!!

Keep the guys that played Jimmy and Perry too!!
  • A. J.
Just start over. I was excited about Spacey as Luthor until I saw his drab performance. The whole "super-kid" story was complete crap. I found it dissappointing that they were trying to continue the Reeves Superman instead of starting a new storyline. Superman can be so much more than what we keep getting. Hell, Smallville is better.
  • killing the superkid in Superman Returns or in Man of Steel would solve a whole bunch of problems with this new series...
1- the very idea of the superkid is bad, wrong and lazy
2- it would add a more serious dimention that Superman stories often lack - bad things almost never happen in a Superman story, Sperman hardly ever really suffers.
3- as cold as it sounds, killing Lois' kid would allow her to fall in love with Superman again...much like when a male Lion takes over a pride - he kills all the cubs so the females go back into heat. We could go back to 'zero' in they're relationship, but there would be a nice bit of depth to echo.
4- one less annoying kid with a bad hair cut in film.

I'd like to see Man of Steel have a couple of things
5 real set pieces, 3 minor ones (think bank robbers in Returns) and two gigantic heart stopping apocalyptic sequences of kickassery...(see Miricleman issue 15)
a serious discussion about the fact that Superman is, frankly, a god...there was a book called Last Son of Krypton that had an interesting discussion about Superman's effect on the world...
  • Clarence Somerset
Have Super battle Zod in space and in the sky....that'd be awesome!
  • A. J.
Oh wow, in space AND the sky? No way! Maybe they could battle in the mall too!
  • AC
I think they should set up doomsday and give Lois's kid the conner kent role and have her grow him up to take his father's place. Make superman die like 1 hour into the film, and have the 2nd half build rise of the supermen... then the 3rd film to set up superman returns... again?
  • Jared Smith
If it is action they are looking for they NEED to make Man of Steel about Superman VS Doomsday. That was the most epic battle in the history of Superman and Doomsday actually killed him. That is the only movie I want to see. I don't see how anyone could possibly object that this is the best movie anyone could make about Superman.
  • Joe
Superman returns was a horrible film. The ending where he lifted up the island MADE OF KRYPTONITE was so silly. That is just one point out of many that made the movie horrible. I could go on for ages but i don't think the movie is worth the time to type about.
  • FrankieB
One word: Doomsday. Everyone wants the fight. If they can create the Hulk in 3D then Doomsday should be cake.

I want to see it. Give me Doomsday. Give me the 4 Supermen. I want it!
  • Jason
doomsday would be epic, but in order to do that + the ensuing 'reign of the supermen' and all else that followed, it would take at least 2 or 3 movies. If they set it up that way, we're safe...otherwise lets c some quality bizzaro story, similar to the doc ock accomplishments of SM2.
  • dcr
This is what my pitch might be: After the unexpected death of someone close to him, Superman must again face the realization that everyone close to him will die no matter what he does. Meanwhile, a heartless con-man begins a one-cyborg crime wave in Metropolis.
  • Mr Zebra
Kate Bosworth was not a good choice for Lois, but Kevin Spacey was good as Lex - and I HATE Kevin Spacey and everything else he's done, so that's saying something for me.

I'm worried about Bryan Singer leaving. His leaving the X-Men franchise is what caused the third movie to be total tripe. What Singer brings to movies is his passion and you just have to watch X-Men 3 to see what not having a vested interest in the material brings to a film.
  • Kevin Spacey was amazing as Lex, nuff said I think.
  • chris
They need to fix two big things, and then the rest is little stuff.

The big things: 1) They have to fix the kid thing - lose him somehow. 2) Make it action oriented. Like everyone says, bring in a new villain that requires Superman to "duke it out."

Then, tackle the little things: 1) Possibly recast Lois (no one will miss her) - find someone less fragile looking and with more personality...someone closer to the woman who plays the character on Smallville now. But not her, because well, she's already on TV. 2) Fix the color palette. The dark, muted colors were all wrong for the world of Superman. 3) Redesign Superman's costume. This includes color correcting the suit; and de-fetishing it -- get rid of the leather/rubbery, heavy cape and replace it with more naturally flowing material; make the "S" emblem bigger on his chest; and expand the briefs so that they don't look so tiny.

I think the movie was geared towards or at least trying to introduce more of a realistic drama. Whether this was the goal or not, I think it was interesting to see a Superman story that was REAL. We know Superman can kick a$$ but we've never seen him so vulnerable the way we did in this movie. Him getting beat down by normal people and having a baby with Louis who is with another man...its a breath of fresh air I think. It makes Superman more real, like he's really out there somewhere, and not just in the movies. I do agree the "superkid" idea was out of the blue. I'm curious how they're going to manage that. I hope they continue with this storyline and add MORE ACTION.
  • Ganymede2010
Am I the only one who liked the Super Kid storyline? That was my favorite *little-part*. But Brandon Routh is by far the best Superman replacement. I happen to adore Brian Signers casting decisions. He's the best Casting director in Hollywood. He did the impossible, he found Wolverine, Proffesor X, and Magneto! Some of the best casting in Hollywood History. Give Singer another chance. He will knock part 2 out of the park.
  • Cast Brendan Fraser in the lead role.
  • doomsday storyline, superkid becomes superboy, superman dies.
  • AFan
They should reboot and redo. There are numerous problems with casting, the script, the visual appeal of the Superman Returns movie. Lois was waaaay too girly - she couldn't fight off one guy?? The super-child thing was unexpected and just awkward. I don't think it was very well done. Superman uses his powers to spy on Lois - that's just weird and wrong, he would never do that. Superman's costume was dark and drab as if he rolled around in a mudpit before every flight. Superman barely had any lines and when he did speak it was very similar to the way Clark speaks. Superman is supposed to be the confident, outgoing hero. Clark is the mild-mannered one. I think Routh did a fine job with Clark, but was not a good Superman. I liked Spacey as Lex, he was quite good - less campy than in previous movies, but still Lex needs to be smarter and more devious. The whole plot about the crystals was ridiculous - come on, if the crystals grow when exposed to water then we would've had a huge problem when it rained on the Kent farm since his spaceship was stashed there. There was a lack of action throughout the movie. The best scene in the whole thing is the shuttle disaster. The rest of the whole movie is nothing in comparison. Oh gee that mini-quake in Metropolis where Superman has to vaporize some glass with heat vision and blow out a fire with his super breath. No substantial challenges of any kind. We also have no supervillains; there is nothing to keep us on edge until the end when Superman lifts up that huge island made of Kryptonite (which he should not have been able to do!). Even then you know he won't die because he just 'returned'. I do not agree with the "... Superman is that he is invincible and unstoppable." from above because he is not completely invincible. First, he has emotions like any other person (watch Smallville, they do a fantastic job with bringing out the humanity in Superman's character and how must feel about hiding his true self). He can also be mentally manipulated through telepathy. He's vulnerable to Kryptonite, magic, and various other technologies in the comics. Furthermore, the whole point of Superman is to show us that even though he has all these fantastic powers and he can do amazing things, ultimately he's still feeling the same things we are. He can still be hurt by the same emotionally traumatic experiences like losing a loved one. Most importantly, he serves to show us (If you read Peace on Earth by Alex Ross) that there are some things even Superman can't do - solve world hunger, bring peace to the world, etc. He shows us that only by standing up for each other can we ever overcome these problems. No one person, not even Superman can save us from global problems, but collectively we can stop them. He shows us that the real power is within our unity and our determination to help one another and stand up for what's right.
  • I personally though the first movie was horrible. I was not remotely entertained at all. I look forward to the change in screenwriters. hopefully the second one is worth the 10 bucks to go see it!

Regardless to what happens... CHANGE THE DAMN SUIT. It's the 21st century - lets have a superman with his underwear on the inside of his pants...
  • KEL
G,read my post in the Mark Millar to pitch Superman sequel section, please.
  • Patrick
the movie had obvious problems, if I were doing this movie (I can do it for free like Mark Millar as well except much cheaper damn it), I would, like many suggest, completely reboot the entire movie, make Clark Kent the more dominate personality, make Luthor a more sinister business man, also have another villain to work with Luthor against Superman, and others, here's who I would cast

    Lois Lane - Rashida Jones
    Lex Luthor - Vin Diesel
    Jimmy Olsen - Michael Welch
  • big daddy
the reason you would do it for so much cheaper is because you casting ideas suck. those would be terrible choices. nothing against the actors and actress, but they wouldnt fit the part. thats like me saying tom hanks ( a great actor) should play superman
  • Stuart Koon
I can only say one word to answer that question. DOOMSDAY!
  • Steven Sterling
Putting Doomsday or another super villain in there would be great, but having several...like Zod brings Doomsday to Earth but doesn't tell Superman until after Zod is almost done.
Superman could fight Zod and have a colossal battle but fatally wound Zod, and Zod laughs and is like, "your real challenge awaits you" Superman would be like, "what do you mean", and Zod would be like "go find your earth child, son of krypton" and then he dies but Superman follows the trail and gets to doomsday just in time for him to see his earth son get ripped in half. He seeks vengeance but doomsday doesn't break a sweat in their super colossal battle that destroys half of Canada and Greenland. After fighting with all his might, Superman succumbs to doomsday's might and has his back broken by doomsday, then is cast back down to earth (I know doomsday can't fly but for this instance he could leap high up and slam into Superman). Superman falls into an ocean and drifts up on a shore, and standing there waiting for him is Christian Bale's Batman, and he asks him, "need some help?"
Batman takes him back to the "batcave", and Alfred is like, "Oh my. Master Wayne, when you said you were bringing home company I was thinking you meant a couple of European models or Harvey Dent's sister....not Superman."
Alfred, Lucius (yes he'll be back) and Batman heal Superman, give him super technology (hence Cyber Superman), and he comes back and has a master battle with Doomsday, killing him. DC needs to do cross-overs if they are to compete with Marvel (thumbs up).
