What is the most anticipated movie scheduled for release in the next year?
The Dark Knight… nope.
Iron Man? Nah uh.
I Am Legend? Will Smith wishes.
The answer to the question and more after the jump.
MovieTickets.com conducted a survey of 2,000 moviegoers, and came up with a list of the top 20 movies coming out in the next year. And what film is at the top of the list?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
I’m actually pretty shocked about this one considering many younger people I have talked to seem to have little to no interest in this series (which shocked even me). I’m also bewildered at many of the other placements on the list. For instance, how is American Gangster higher than Iron Man? And how is National Treasure 2 higher than I Am Legend? Get Smart over Beowulf?
Sure, the marketing for American Gangster is already in full swing, and a film like Iron Man has only released a teaser trailer online, so it’s understandable why Gangster is placed higher on the list. However, something like Mamma Mia! or Get Smart ranking higher than The Wachowski Brothers’ Speed Racer is quite surprising.
Check out the full list below. And if you have a second, tell us what your most anticipated films of the next year are.
1. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
2. The Dark Knight (Batman Begins 2)
3. National Treasure: Book of Secrets
4. American Gangster
5. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
6. Iron Man
7. I Am Legend
8. Get Smart
9. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
10. Charlie Wilson’s War
11. Hancock
12. Beowulf
13. His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass
14. Mamma Mia!
15. The Incredible Hulk
16. Speed Racer
17. Step Brothers
18. Bee Movie
19. Mr. Magnorium’s Wonder Emporium
20. Starship Dave

mhm now don’t get me wrong but don’t some of those movies hit the theatres this year? maybe you should consider renaming the post to ‘themost anticipated movies’…. i dunno.

Peter,
American Gangster comes out in November (just a few weeks away), and has already had multiple TV comercials. It stars Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe who are very popular actors. Iron Man comes out next May and many casual movie goers aren’t going to know about it. Robert Downey is known more for his trouble with the law than his acting. Plus, Iron Man is way bellow Spider Man, X-Men and Fantastic 4 on the Marvel pantheon of Super Heroes. Throw in the top heroes from DC and he is way down the list of high profile super heroes.
National Treasure 2 over I am Legend because it is a sequel, and again, not many casual fans have heard of I am Legend. Once we get closer to the release, and more people are exposed to I am Legend, the anticipation will grow (it looks very good and WIll Smith is a huge draw).
Get Smart over Beowulf because Steve Carrel is huge right now, it is based on a very popular old tv show, and Beowulf looks strange, is based on an epic poem that most people havent read and the ones who have (like myself) were forced to in school. I actually have gone back and re-read it and liked it more, but still, it doesn’t have the name recognition that other famous epics like The Odyssey has. And it looks strange.
Mama Mia over Speed Racer is a bit of a puzzle but it was a very popular stage musical. I dont understand why. But Speed Racer is very low on my list also as the cartoon was cheesy and I am actually shocked its being made into a movie, but that’s just me.
As for my list of what I’m looking forward to:
Indiana Jones (despite the crap I’ve read here about it:(
Everything Else

diesel: There isn’t enough room in a headline to be completely clear, but the first sentence of the article does say it clearly: “most anticipated movie scheduled for release in the next year”
Mezz, you make some good points, especially about American Gangster.
I also am really looking forward to Indy 4, I’m just wondering if the younger audience will show up to the movie theaters

Without a doubt Indy IV is my most anticipated film. So where’s Star Trek on the list? I also don’t get the whole National Treasure phenomenon. That franchise blows.
1. Indy IV
2. Star Trek XI
3. The Dark Knight
4. Iron Man
5. The Incredible Hulk
October 11th, 2007 at 11:28 am
I’d have to say there are three movies I can’t wait to see, Indiana Jones IV, The Dark Knight, and 1-18-08.
October 11th, 2007 at 11:51 am
I sincerely doubt this survey was open-ended. That is, it seems like people picked out of a list of movies. So, maybe you’d rather see the Mummy 3 instead of Mamma Mia, but that doesn’t mean you really give a crap about Mummy 3… or Mamma Mia.

And about 70% of these will more than likely disappoint…
I’m done.

I agree with the list most of the commenter’s have said above/before me, but I also cannot wait to see “Vantage Point”.
October 11th, 2007 at 5:06 pm
Yeah dude “1-18-08/Overnight” is my #1 highly anticipated movie, followed by The Dark Knight & AvP:Requiem suprisngly. Granted, all the deaths were shown in the trailer, but it looks pretty kickass. Anything else that comes out next year will be alright considering it’s Hollywood’s last year of making movies. Indy 4, Star Trek, Ironman & Speedy will be the last of the best.

October 12th, 2007 at 12:04 pm
WALL-E anyone? How can a Pixar film not make the list?
October 12th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
My most anticipated films?
-The Golden Compass - I’m a big fan of books and I’m interested in seeing how the film version handles the anti-religious slant. There’s a prospect of protest from religious groups on this…Which if the production team has the guts to go full-steam ahead with, will give the movie more publicity.
Plus, New Line seems to be following the Lord of the Rings formula…Get an indie director with a sketchy past and one legit hit, who’s a fan to helm the whole epic franchise.
Let’s see, if lightening can strike twice.
-The Dark Knight - Hands down, the best comic-book film in recent years and possibly ever, has a sequel coming with an interesting and horrific-looking take on the Joker. I’m there.
-The Mist - It’s not on the list..But this Stephen King novella inspired The Fog and video game Silent Hill…I just worry about whether the premise will seem fresh after all it’s imitators.
-I Am Legend - Can Will Smith finally shake, Will Smith-isms enough to make this film as cool as it has potential to be?
It’s the same tendency that ruined Tom Cruise’s action bankability, forget the personal stuff…He never was able to drop Tom Cruise enough to the betterment of his (Mission Impossible, especially) films.
-Iron Man- It would be higher, but for the lackluster trailer…But this one seems most on point with comicbook, and perfect casting for Stark.
-The Watchmen - Another one not on the list, but I worry about the relative unknowns cast so far.
That title for the new Indy film, leaves me with a sense of Phantom Menace foreboding…WTF?! at The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? It sounds like a bargain bin, RPG game.
As for the other puzzling choices on the list…It’s ONLY 2,000 people in (more than likely) middle-America. These are the trend-followers, not the taste-makers.
So, I don’t see this as an accurate gauge of what will be popular.
October 12th, 2007 at 5:35 pm
Can’t anyone do a list correctly? Go in reverse order to get people to read the entire list and build enthusiasm. Even Letterman’s top ten list starts from #10 first.
October 13th, 2007 at 6:04 am
The next James Bond film. Out in November 2008.
October 16th, 2007 at 1:11 am
I just watched the trailer for Vantage Point… that’s my most anticipated movie for next year!
October 18th, 2007 at 10:09 pm
hmmmm..im not sure…Hey has anyone talked about a sequel to UHF yet..?
October 22nd, 2007 at 1:28 am
All I gotta say is…for a movie to be called I Am Legend…it better be damn good.
November 4th, 2007 at 7:07 pm
Gotta go with Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.” Pretty tough to beat the cast and direction in that film. This ain’t no Joel Schumacher Batman. The new series is infused with more realism, which tends to make a lot of sense considering that Batman is just a man without any superpowers. “Batman Begins” really started a following in 2005 and I’d look for that to continue and expand considerably with the introduction of the Joker. The film supposedly centers on him and will also show the origins of Two-Face. I can’t wait. The only other film which comes close to “The Dark Knight” on my anticipation scale is “Watchmen.” But I don’t believe that will hit the big screen until ‘09. “Wanted” from director Timur Bekmambetov, based on Mark Millar’s risque’ graphic novel of the same title, is a close third.

How many of us are old enough to remember how Grease was the fun movie of 1977 and just about everyone went to see it. Scoff all you like, but I have a feeling Mama Mia! will be another Grease . . . fun with great music.
