Resident Evil: Extinction

Resident Evil: Extinction is no good! Do not see it!

Have I seen the movie? Nope. Sony won’t let me, or any other reviewer, screen the film. Even though they are having nationwide screenings on Thursday, I have been told by ScreenGems that media is BANNED from attending said screening. It’s really too bad, because the whole mad max premise had promise. But don’t think anymore about it - The movie is not worth seeing! Sony told us! They told us not to see it.

Translation: Resident Evil 3 sucks. That simple. Stay away from this stinker. Do not waste your money! See Into The Wild or IMAX Transformers instead!

time for …. “THE WAGGING FINGER OF SHAME shame shame shame…” Ebert’s voice? Anyone?

  2. Gravatar

This is disgusting, I hope the handful of reviewers that endure Extinction are brutally honest. The franchise showed promise after Resident Evil, one of the best game-to-film adaptations to date. Sad but true. Sony responds by selling out both sequels Apocalypse and Extinction to nobodies. Ever since the early trailers LONG ago it was apparent RE:E was going to suck hard, now we have confirmation. I can’t imagine anyone out of high school wanting to see this trash, let alone pay to see it.

  3. Gravatar

I am still excited to see it, but I am a huge RE fan, so I have to see it…

  4. Gravatar

Peter - I am going to further this message on my website so that my small audience hears the message about this studio crap.

  5. Gravatar

TV press saw this movie last week.

  6. Gravatar

So your bashing the film on the grounds you weren’t allowed to see it?

    Immaturity FTW?

  7. Gravatar

The only reason I want to see this is that one of my friends is in the movie and gets killed.
He’s an extra and gets killed at some point by some zombies or something he said.
He told me Mike Epps was a douche bag to him but Ashanti and Mila seemed nice even though their “people” would let any of the extras talk to them much.

  8. Gravatar

Perfect example of why bloggers are so childish. They take themselves so seriously and cry when Mommy or Daddy don’t let them stay up and play.

  9. Gravatar

    @Kestrel

Sooooo you actually think this movie looks good then????

I’m sory but i didn’t need anyone to tell me that this movie looks like a piece of garbage. This is one of those movies that doesn’t look “funny-bad” it just looks flat out painful to endure. Much like what Shoot Em Up turned out to be…

In all honestly though to anyone who sees this movie…just go kill yourself…seriously if you see this piece of studio crap you are doing nothing more than helping for more horse shit like to this to see the light of day and for this I and everyone who has ever enjoyed viewing a movie before…hates you. (this goes for Saw 4 as well…if you see that you deserve worse than death…you deserve to see Saw 5)

  10. Gravatar

Sony’s stating perfectly that they can’t back their product.

    The film is trash.

When a movie is not screened by critics that always means its a bad sign!!!!!

Go have a double feature of The Road Warrior and Night of the Comet. Then thank yourself for not letting another studio make crap films.

  11. Gravatar

Be professional; don’t blame on a film because you were not allowed to see it. Let the people decide on box office.

  12. Gravatar

I don’t see this as immature. I mean come on a company says reviewers are not allow to pre screen… that is suspect and shows their insecurities in the finished product. You honestly can’t go into this movie and expect an epic. It’s gonna be a bread and butter action/horror film.

  13. Gravatar

I like it when a studio sticks it to critics (esp. self important bloggers) and doesn’t let them see a film ahead of time.

As for audiences, let them choose for themselves, c’mon its about zombies and chics with guns. You don’t need a blogger to tell you that.

  14. Gravatar

Regardless of what the media says people will think for themselves. The problem with most of these films is that you can see all the good stuff in the previews.
Studios should stick to themselves for paying top dollar to actors who can’t seem to get into character. (that was not specific to this movie)

Blogger and such state a matter of opinion it’s not the end all be all, so if a blogger is self important let em be. Is it not childish to go to someone’s site and complain about how they are being childish?

  15. Gravatar

Does anyone know if the first 2 Resident Evils were screened for critics? Though I wont stick up for the second one the first was slightly enjoyable. One of the better video game adaptations and not a shabby Zombie movie either. Though I agree that a studios decision to not stand behind their product is a sure sign of suckage it doesnt ultimatically make it so.. though dont ask me to list good unscreened movies cause I’m lazy and dont want to do the research but I know there must be some decent ones out there. KESTREL I dont like you… your a loud obnoxious anti opinion smudge face. I’m curious what you will think of RE extinction. Could you right a review? If you stick up for this movie then your the reason WE get stuck with dumb movie after another. Peter is doing the right thing by making a stand and bashing crap so that maybe more people will learn “hey Hollywood this crap sucks, stop making this junk”

  16. Gravatar

    Zach,

Harsh words… its just a movie based on a great property that stays true to the games (they consult Capcom on the script so it is sort of inline with the games)

I will also be seeing Saw 4, so should I double kill myself. I like horror films and so far all of the Saw movies have been enjoyable…

  17. Gravatar

    Kestrel,

My experience in the past two years shows that 95% of movies not screened for critics have a rating lower than 50% on Rotten Tomatoes (critics) and lower than a 5.0 on imdb (normal moviegoers). So “sticking it to critics” is not the issue, its a self preservation thing. The studios hope that because they don’t give press screenings that the bad buzz won’t happen until late Friday, and that won’t effect the opening weekend box office (thats all the studio cares about). So I’m “sticking it to the studio” by telling you guys, this is a stinker. And the past has shown this. The future only repeats the past.

  18. Gravatar

    Peter,

I just think that it’s a bit silly to blast the film solely on the fact that you got stiffed by the studio.

IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes might have quotable stats, but it isn’t necessarily an accurate enough assessment.

People want to know if Peter Sciretta thinks the film is worth seeing.

Once you condemn it because the studio wouldn’t let you see it before anyone else, it makes you look a bit spoiled by privilege.

  19. Gravatar

I am actually grateful when a reviewer notifies me that the studio would not screen it for them. Ebert and Roeper do the same thing. Keep it up Peter.

It is also usually a good indication that the studio is out for a “quick score” opening weekend with a crap movie, before news spreads too far that it’s awful.

Personally whenever this happens I feel like the studio is trying to pull a fast one on it’s customers, and it pisses me off.

  20. Gravatar

spoiled by privilege? LOL Man, I just want to be given the opportunity to screen and write a review of the film. Sony seems to be one of the studios which is still taken to these old school practices. The truth is that the public don’t listen to critics. The critic and public divide is evident in such movies as Wild Hogs making huge bucks. But I feel bloggers still have a connection with their audiences.

I not only feel snubbed from being allowed to do my job, but I feel betrayed by Sony. I have done a lot to publicize this movie. A lot of the bloggers and other movies sites have done a lot for this film, but the studio has turned their back on us. To make matters worse, the studio is running nationwide screenings on Thursday that the press are not allowed to. Those screenings are run by the same publicity agencies that run our normal press screenings. To bar press from attending is a pre-defensive move, and one that takes MORE effort than letting us actually attend. Sony says they will continue their practices, and I have told them that whenever they do I will warn my audience not to see the movie regardless.

  21. Gravatar

Personally, the people who want to see Resident Evil 3 should see it, just illegally download it please. For the sake of future movies, don’t give Sony any of your money ,but if God forbid you must see this no brainer, hack job of a popular video game series than by all means watch it. Just please don’t fund Resident Evil 4. This is not because I want to help Peter’s fight ,but rather I’m just irritated that Hollywood takes ideas, rewrites it, changes the plot, and calls it Resident Evil to make money. It would be different if a classy director decided to do this ,but its Paul W.S. Anderson.

  22. Gravatar

The first LEAKED review of the movie is one out of 5 stars. Doesn’t look good.

    http://www.hollywoodchicago.com/2007/09/resident-evil-extinction-screams.html

  23. Gravatar

From that review: “While it has the beats of a movie, it’s purely product and you can’t even really begrudge it for that.”

  24. Gravatar

    Peter -

I’m seeing the film tonight and will have a review tonight as well at my site, bigpictureradio.com.

  25. Gravatar

Kurt- You and Kestrel should go on a double date and see RE extinction. All Peter was doing was giving you a fair warning that RE is going blow and be a waste of your time and money. Go ahead and see this garbage this movie has to make money some how and your the raging idiot who is going to fork over his Walmart Paycheck for it. Good for you… by you supporting this movie then the terrorist have one!

  26. Gravatar

    @mike

lol if you could figure out a way to double kill people please let me know.

And Saw 3 was horrible…and i actually don’t mind horror movies…correction…i don’t mind GOOD horror movies which sadly there have few to none of in the past decade.

  27. Gravatar

If you love the video games, then stay away from the movies. they set no mood and or ambiance that even have any resemblance to each other. HOWEVER!! If this was another zombie flick, maybe it would be good…But I’m with Pete on this one, he usually has good “suck intuition”.

  28. Gravatar

Also…..I don’t want anyone to think that comments by myself are of “Zach” who is also not the writer ” Zach Lawrence”…..There are far too many Zachs on this site….. I say battle royale

  29. Gravatar

saw it last night. Not really “Mad Max” - more like 28 Weeks Later meets Blade.

  30. Gravatar

    Drewbacca,

Those are 2 good movies there (IMO) that gives more promise to the movie…

    So was it good?

  31. Gravatar

It was decent. Probably worth seeing for fans. WAY better than 2, which I pretty much hated. On par (maybe slightly better) with the first one (which I sort of consider a guilty pleasure), although a completely different film. Good, popcorn fun. Not bad at all.

And my comparison holds water from a story and tone standpoint, although not nearly as good as either of those films obviously.

I’ll have my full review up probably by tonight at MoviePatron

  32. Gravatar

    Thanks Drew. . .

  33. Gravatar

So you know what I’m thinking… /film needs a forum, i think this 30 comment thread kinda warrants it. Eh, Peter?

  34. Gravatar

First and foremost, where is the professionalism in saying that a movie sucks without even seeing it first, thats why certain critics will always be third-rate nobodies.

Anyways, as for the movie, yes I will admit that the previews were a bit to be desired, however in no way does that warrant a review such as this because someone chooses to respond like a child because they cannot see it ahead of time. As for the movie itself, it actually happened to be pretty good. The entire RE franchise has actually done a decent job turning the game into a live action film. I think that many individuals would have a greater appreciation for the movie if they knew more about the story line from the game series. While the movies do not necessarily follow a story from the games, they build upon them even more.

So in my opinion, I think that anyone who is considering seeing it SHOULD see it and make up their own mind on what they consider to be a worthwhile movie and not listen to one persons prejudicial opinion.

  35. Gravatar

WA WA WA! That’s all I read out of that piece of garbage review. You think that just because you weren’t allowed to see the movie ahead of time you’re allowed to call it trash. Sony or any other companies don’t need retard critics like you to give reviews and bring hype to their film. That’s what trailers are for. And they gave us some pretty dam good ones.

“The truth is that the public don’t listen to critics.”

Oh? And why do you think that is? Because all you do is spit out bull**** and so do most other “critics”. You just critisize.

I thought the movie was very entertaining. Maybe you go to movies to whipe your ass on the seat but who knows. Maybe you should start finding another job because your no professional.

    “This movie SUCKS!”

Pathetic…. I dont even want to say any more….

Oh and btw… it was #1 this weekend.

  36. Gravatar

Ken: Your arguments are laughable. Just because the movie is #1 at the box office doesn’t mean it is good. Wild Hogs was #1 at the box office.

The fact of the matter is that Sony did not screen the movie for critics because it sucks. The user and critic reviews have all been negative up till this point. The movie is getting a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes.

  37. Gravatar

    obviously that doesn’t mean jack…

  38. Gravatar

    @Ken

Do you know how to read…apparently not…so let me spell out for you what you missed from what Peter said…

    $$$$$ ≠ QUALITY

    ’nuff said???

    No…want more?

Dragon Wars made a decent amount of money this weekend…and I’ve pissed more cinematic excellence than that waste of celluloid…the same also goes for Mr. Woodcock and Good Luck Chuck…

And to completly destroy your sick idea that Quality is equated to gross…the 3rd highest grossing film of the year so far has been Transformers…and suffice to say…Mr. Bay won;t be getting any nods come award season.

  39. Gravatar

    Alright you guys… chill.

Yes, maybe the title of this post is a little premature and misleading… but I would say a few things:

one, it is obviously very tongue and cheek and some of you guys need to lighten up.

Second, the point of the article is that the movie was not screened for critics; which 99% of the time means the film sucks ass and the studio knows it. Very few movies are not shown to critics before hand and the films that aren’t are almost always crap.

Thirdly, I think the author is right in that seeing “Into the Wild” would be a wise choice for films to see this weekend after reading reviews of this film.

Last, the author is ultimately and surprisingly wrong. Res Evil 3 is actually decent popcorn fare. It’s nothing spectacular, but likely the best of the series - certainly better than the shit that was part 2.

    ciao.

  40. Gravatar

I’ve done a bunch of “Not Being Screened For the Press” postings in the past, and none of them got nearly even a tenth of the response as this one. Sure, I did use a slightly deceptive but tongue firmly in cheek title, and that’s is probably what made the difference. Goes to show you how much marketing (ie headlines) matter in this day and age.

The fact of the matter is this: Sony expects movie websites to promote their genre material, but they don’t grant us access to screenings or interviews. I was once told by a Sony publicist that I’d have to promote their crappier films “to get invited to the big show”. And yes, that is a direct quote. I asked to attend the Spider-Man 3 junket, and that was the response I got. Can you imagine that?

Sony is one of the few companies left that don’t understand the value of the online market. The complete opposite can be said about Fox Searchlight, which enables movie journalists with early screenings, because they believe highly in their product. Searchlight knows how (and what it means) to treat online journalists with respect.

  41. Gravatar

Ohhhhh. I guess I didn’t know that you were an online journalist. . . I guess Sony doesn’t get it either. But I imagine that FOX Searchlight is a little more with it. Especially if they want to tout a lesbian werewolf movie.

  42. Gravatar

    Kestel,

Like I suggested in the other thread: lntelligent arguments.

Fox Searchlight has nothing to do with Jack and Diane (the lesbian werewolf love story). That is being independently funded (which explains the aforementioned delay due to a drop in funding). But who knows, maybe Fox Searchlight will pick it up at Sundance 2009. Searchlight usually grabs the best flicks at the fest (Garden State, Napoleon Dynamite, Little Miss Sunshine, Once, Waitress…etc)

  43. Gravatar

Yeah, I guess I should call it a night. I’m letting my brain leak.

  44. Gravatar

In 20 years, the Resident Evil movie series will be forgotten. The test of time really decays below average films. Without the promotional material and the fact its a *current* movie playing in theaters no teen 20 years later is going have the same promotional material shoved down their throats to know what it is and without critics/awards or word of mouth the movie’s value is just as much as the other below average video on the rental shelf. The odds are for the kid to see the next rip off/crap/garbage/popcorn flick/i have no brains therefore I will eat yours type movie that’s in the theaters currently. So the crap cycle begins.

  45. Gravatar

It will happen much sooner than 20 years. Think about this: Universal removed the Back to the Future rides from their theme parks because of the drop in brand recognition. And the Back to the Future series is highly acclaimed (at least the first film, which is rated #115 of all time on IMDb). And yet it has only been 22 years since the first film hit the big screen (and only 17 years since the series was last in theaters). So if a good movie series can fade that fast in people’s memories, it should take far less time for people to forget something like the Resident Evil movies.

  46. Gravatar

By 2012 people will have to think for a second to remember that tese movies even existed…as they will have to do for most of the movies that came out this year

  47. Gravatar

RE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I repeat RE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!! And Brady Quinn is still sexy

  48. Gravatar

    @Zach

Did I ever say that $$ = Quality? No! I was noting that if people thought it sucked then other people would hear that and not go see it. Obviously that was not the case here. Ofcourse its no god dam Titanic or what ever lame movies you think are good but this movie was good none-the-less.

And when Peter puts in a title of an article that a movie sucks and within that article says to not go see it is beyond pathetic for a journalist.

If Transformers is the third best film in sales that then that says the movie is worth seeing. Thats the whole point to saying a movie sucks. That its not worth seeing. And this movie is definitely worth seeing.

Obviously you missed the point of the article. Way to go…

  49. Gravatar

    @Ken P

Obviously YOU are the one who is missing the point…

First of all if you don’t like the articles on this site, why are you reading them and wasting your time having a posting war with people on the comment section of one of the articles you think are so “pathetic?”

Second, please don’t insult me by saying that perhaps the most overrated movie of the Twentieth century is one of my favorites. I love James Cameron…but I’m sorry Titanic is no where as good as it got credit for. (11 Oscars…come on)

Third, the point i was trying to make was that just because a film makes alot of money at the box office does NOT mean that it is a quality film. However, you entire argument basically goes as such, “well I mean…TOP OF THE BOX OFFICE…/Film sucks…your stupid…GO RE!!!”

Oh and guess what…sometimes when someone says that a movie sucks and that in their personal opinion they think this…and they happen to tell some people about said personal opinion…they happen to be right about it sucking. But sometimes the people they tell either are to stupid to listen, or might just wanna see if it’s really that bad for themselves (which is fine…you don’t have to listen to everything you hear. I went and saw D-War knowing full well what i was getting myself into). Anyway, the point is that movies don’t necessarily have to be good to make money at the box office…Point in case… Norbit. And if you say that NORBIT was good…then I’m going o attack you through your computer screen

  50. Gravatar

Ken, you are wrong again. Bad buzz effects the SECOND weekend box office, not the first. You go see the movie and tell your co-workers and firneds on monday. I predict a big drop for this film next weekend, the same thing happened to such films as Ghost Rider

  51. Gravatar

In the nationwide release category of movies released in theaters last weekend nothing was worth seeing. NOTHING. We got Resident Evil, Good Luck Chuck, and Sidney White…I maybe missing some ,but they’re forgettable. Audiences go to see movies regularly. That’s a given. Out of these releases it was clear Resident Evil would be #1 its first weekend due to the mass amounts of marketing and how many people enjoy the zombie/guts escapist flick. Its a zombie movie! Good times! Lots of blood! Evil Dogs! Its Mad Max with a chick and messed up dead guys! People will go to it simply because its the most entertaining new movie of the week. I guess they don’t like to rent movies? Anyways Resident Evil sucked in a heap of regular moviegoers and now coming on its second weekend it’ll be interesting to see with The Kingdom opening how Resident Evil will do…or maybe people would be too busy playing Halo 3.

  52. Gravatar

I loved all the resident evil movies. i dont care about opinions of other people. if you dont want to see this movie, dont write about it, no body cares. i know lots and lots of people who said it was amazing as well.

    -Mitch

  53. Gravatar

all of the people tht say they hated the movie are entitled to their opinion. i hated it, ALOT. the only reason i saw it was to watch milla jovavich die, but alas… and the movie fucks the game over so badly, it isnt even funny. they didnt even mention half the characters. and im not saying its a bad movie, it does have afew cool parts, i just think it would have been better if they followed the plotline of the series. because for me, it was like a slap in the face that said “to hell with the story! we’re making our own! …but we will take afew characters from the original…and make them look retarted. We have mike epps!”

  54. Gravatar

HI i hate this movie so much that, it isn’t even worth existance. I am like most in here on the comments about its barely anything about the game at all. I love women yes, but do they have to live all the time? I mean its like saying you guys go out there and die, we women stand tall. Keep the girls all fine and dandy but the less attractive or less sexy one just kil her off and end all the guys but maybe some macho hunk for the women fans. They barely killed zombies shoot them or anything its all Alice a fake character. THe ykill every good guy off like Mike Epps and Carlos. Carlos was my favorite of the game series. He was funny spoke like a typcial guy like us. But of course the movie people just had to go and kill him like its nothing. Its the worst trash i ever saw, and i got bad reviews before so its nothing new i saw it a couple days after it came out, but wanted to see and hope someone agrees with how terrible it is and 2 was actually the best. At least in #2 it was action packed and went in many areas within Raccoon City, and kept shooting them in heads and stuff, and lickers pretty much for most part stuck to the game in many areas. First was 2nd best but not really stuck to the game at all in that one, and pretty muc hkilled everyone off quicky. So 2’s my best, i hated 3 like said its worst to look at for me than 2 guys kissin its that sick and makes me vomit. But to those who love it good for u there is always those who like JUST anything if its bam bam bam hot woman and stuff its a A to me it has to be shocking scary more action more what u want to see than just one woman killing everyone while everyone dies fast not much zombies not much zombie killing just a slow one person do it all.

  55. Gravatar

    wow…

  56. Gravatar

    Yea seriously, wow…..

P.S. “HI i hate this movie so much that, it isn’t even worth existence.”

    lol is it wort Extinction?

  57. Gravatar

Hi its great that there is Some people who agree with me if any of you who hated this movie or would like to read any of my work tell me i am a horror writer my self the only problem is i go tooooo far. Anything goes theres no limit in sick, s hock fear or freaky. Or scary. Anything goes even some of my women fan base has been in my long horror/movie like story. If any of you would like to read it, feel free to write me back i would give my email address but then or if it does appear then email me but i just want those who would like a horror movie/story thats anything goes anyone can live, anything can happen and anything goes. These characters act like real people if their potheads they talk crap and talk like natural people would same as bitchs or sluts or mistressey type. But my grammars not perfect so don’t judge me on my grammar. I do my best i am better at ideas, plots then grammar. But if anyones interested than sitting watching this boring movie that me and my sister wishes we could get back our $6 bucks for i barely get money anyhow due to health. BUt if anyone is wanting to read my work give me a heads up. The more fans the better girls have already read some of my work they feel i am be tter than stephan king if, You have a good imaginational view of my work in ur mind. and if y ou can handle ANYTHING GOES….. thanks for being nice and agreeing :) me and sister hates this movie than ANY zombie movie old or new its just lame boring they killed Carlos its what movie people fail any more giving people what they want than what they just slab together i can make better zombies than that and plots and mines DIFferent different ways to create zombies different stuff they can do. If again anyone wants to read my work just say if u just want to rude this comment pass on because i don’t like rude comments if u do or don’t want to read my work then if udo write me :) thanks

  58. Gravatar

  60. Gravatar

I’m almost tempted to read his story, just to reinforce my love of punctuation.

  61. Gravatar

Goes to show i try to be nice to let someone read my story and someone has to be rude. If no one wants to read my horror thats fine just don’t dare talk about my typing. :( talk about rude i am being nice if dont’ want to read good horror, then others can enjoy it. not likecare about my feelings

  62. Gravatar

GEORGE ROMERO, the director of TTHE DEAD SERIES,were supposed to DIRECT the film, but what I heared was, CAPCOM did’nt liked his script and fired him…

    HERE’s the SCRIPT:

    http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/resident_evil_romero.html

I think this is much closer to the story of the game than the Paul W.S. Anderson’s one…

  63. Gravatar

I think that its premature to judge a film on the basis u weren’t allowed to see it. Parhaps the reason sony did not want u there is because ur whole reasoning on on ur reviews its rubbish and childish. As for the film I really think those who haven’t seen it should and make up ur own mind instead of their childish view.

I HAVE seen the movie and really and enjoyed it yeas it wasn’t as gud as the first 2 but still is really entaining and quite frankly can not wait for number 4

  64. Gravatar

This is the bom. The best one they made yet.
You people are harch critics. Why should I hang myself.
You wil nerver hear from me again, but I DON’T LIKE PEOPLE THAT SAY HANG YOUR SELF IF YOUR WATCHING THIS MOVIE.
Let people decide what they want for them selfs, BUT DON’T SAY RUBBISH

  65. Gravatar

Who the fuck are you to tell me not to see it, you piece of shit, as if you telling people not to see it means anything ? ha ha ha ha I’ll see it just because you told me not to
