Juno

I’ve been ranting and raving about Jason Reitman’s new film, Juno. You’ve probably already heard me claim that it’s the best film of the year so far, or even “this year’s Little Miss Sunshine”. That the script, soundtrack, and performances are all top notch. And now you can see the film for yourself (or at least the trailer). While the trailer gives you a good idea what the movie is about (and even features some of the aforementioned great tunes), I think it undersells the film quite a bit (compared to my obvious oversell). The movie is already getting a 9.4 rating on imdb with over 125 votes, and a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 7 reviews. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Here is the movie’s official plot synopsis:

Ellen Page stars as Juno (also the film’s title), a whip-smart teen confronting an unplanned pregnancy by her classmate Bleeker (Michael Cera). With the help of her hot best friend Leah (Olivia Thirlby), Juno finds her unborn child a “perfect” set of parents: an affluent suburban couple, Mark and Vanessa (Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner), longing to adopt. Luckily, Juno has the total support of her parents (JK Simmons and Allison Janney) as she faces some tough decisions, flirts with adulthood and ultimately figures out where she belongs.

    "This is a comedy on a subject of a 13 year old couple who must hide the fact that there having a baby. The couple who are still in middle school (Grade 9) find out that there having a baby and now must figure out what to do."

    Similar, but not exactly the same. Doesn't mean this film isn't good though! I think it looks great.

    Wait... people liked "Little Miss Sunshine?" I thought that was one of the worst movies I've watched, next to maybe "The Weatherman."

    Hopefully this movie will be nothing like "Little Miss Sunshine" and I'll really enjoy it.

    I am glad that I met Jason and Michael in Toronto at the TIFF. I had a three minute conversation with Michael. He's is a little bit ackward and certainly doesn't come across as humourous, but he answered a lot of my questions and was very polite.

    Wow, the movie's not even out yet and it's getting better reviews than Schindler's List. How about we wait for this stinker to come out with these flavor-of-the-year cast members and actually evaluate whether or not it's a good movie from the actual movie, not the trailer. As I recall, a ton of "great" movies had amazing, awe-inspiring, crying on the inside, trailers but ended up being worse than awful. And as a side note, I can't stand the girl that plays Juno... a whip-smart teen she is not, rather an annoying 20 year old crum-bum with the most irritating voice I've ever heard. These "smart" movies are assuming their viewers are intelligent, but so far from the trailer reviews it shows quite the opposite.

    This film was great... I saw it in Toronto with Peter as well and loved it. It needs all the support it can get! Send the trailer around and make sure you catch it in theaters in December.

    It's really worth it, honestly, you won't be let down and that's rare these days...

    Let's hope it doesn't suck as hard as Little Miss Sunshine did. That movie was crap. I won't judge Juno based upon the trailer, because Little Miss Sunshine certainly didn't have a trailer that reeked of suck the way the movie itself, so this one certainly has the potential to be shitty movie-reviewer-fodder as well. Michael Cera and Jennifer Garner are good, but so is Steve Carrell and look how LMS turned out.

    Lord. What's with all the LMS-bashing? If you don't like LMS, get the hell away from films that fit a similar audience. If you're not that audience, fine, but you're an idiot to bash films tha simply aren't meant for you. It's analogous to being 40 years-old and bashing a kids movie. It says more about your lack of knowledge about yourself than it does about the film.
  • Sorry to burst your bubble, guys, but "Jenny, Juno" is exactly like the novel/movie combo Skipped Parts. This film was released in 2000, five years before "Jenny, Juno," while the novel was released way back in 1991. Juno, on the other hand, is quite a bit different than Jenny, Juno and Skipped Parts simply from the trailer.

    Anyway, I recommend Skipped Parts. The book is fantastic. The movie: not-so-much.

    Saw this film last night at Austin Film Festival. It was very entertaining, touching and thought provoking handling of the subject of teen pregnancy, adoption, and loving relationships. It was not as quirky as Little Miss Sunshine and much more enjoysble. Wonderful screenplay and great performance from Allison Janney among others.

    No, its not a remake of Jenny Juno!!!

    simply a coincidence in teen pregnancy, but the plots are completely different, with the Korean film about the teens trying to hide the pregnancy

    Maybe I'm just terribly unsympathetic, but this looks very unappealing to me -- and very Canadian. "Look, audience, here's a bunch of lame people just like you! And you can laugh at their hilarious trials and tribulations over a totally preventable problem." I'm not one for action flicks or contrived heroes, but I can't feel any emotion for Juno or her boyfriend, both of whom seem to be stumbling through their lives without much foresight.

    I would however like to learn to love such movies because my friends admire them. What does everybody see in this movie...??

    she grew up in Chicago, lived in Minneapolis for the last few years when this was written (it's based in Minnesota).

    Oh Canadiangirl, Canadiangirl, so judgemental! :) No one has their act completely together, especially not teenagers, and movies like this are meant to be something of a caricature of culture. For example, Little Miss Sunshine was comically genius in making fun of the culture of mediocrity while at the same time gently encouraging us to become more and embrace the ridiculousless of the ride and expectations put upon us by the general public. Pure genius in its execution. I haven't yet seen Juno, but am counting the days until its release here in San Fran. The point of movies like this is to, as I said, paint a comical caricature of reality while exploring some of the deeper issues underneath. Teenage girls really do get pregnant, all the time, and struggle with what to do about it and where to go from there, and it does not make them hopeless or useless individuals. They may be as you say "stumbling through their lives without much foresight"- but the reality is, we can plan all we want and life will rarely go just as we see it happening. There is so much beauty in the struggle of rising above the circumstances, or even mistakes you made- in one way or another, thats what most great films of any genre are really about!

    It may not be exactly the same as the korean movie Jenny & Juno but they probably got the idea of the story from that korean movie especially it's so ironic that even the title JUNO is somewhat a korean name.

    I saw a pre-screening of this last night.... I laughed out loud the whole time! I never do that at movies! The dialogue was so perfect and amazing! And that soundtrack?! Just truly beautiful and refreshing. I think it's definitely on par with "Little Miss Sunshine". Go see it right when it comes out!!!

    I, personally, adored Little Miss Sunshine, but I would prefer this be different. If the two are too similar, then it will lose some of that magic.
    The story and dialog look to be nicely done and, despite what some have said, I think it will be touching, not overplayed or melancholy.
    I am yet to see it, but I know those who have and are in love.
    One night stand or long-lived romance? I cannot say, yet, but I'm fairly certain you'll be glad that you saw it.

    The movie looks funny in the trailer and i can understand all the positive reviews. HOWEVER, I agree that it kind of looks a little too smart for its own good. Would parents, or a young pregnant girl ever talk or act like that. No!!, but i guess you accept the fact its just a movie and laugh along with what the writers povide you. It does look funny and i would go see it

    I will admit that this movie appears to be a teen version of knocked up, but why don't you quit griping about it if you haven't even seen it??? Who cares if it looks like a rip-off of some Korean movie??? All movies now are complete rip-offs of every movie and book that has ever been written so what does it matter??? You just have to learn to accept it for what it is and hope for the best, its not like its going to kill you to be dissapointed by a MOVIE!!!! Its only like a hour and a half out of your busy lives.

    I saw they movie and I really have fallen in love! As a young girl I am very appreciative of the writer's focus on how people talk today. Now I may not be able to come up with all the responses Juno could but the extremely casual, exagerated, verbiage loaded conversations are strait from the cafeteria. It really gave me hope for the future of film after a summer loaded with the usual blockbuster bunch.

    this is just another remake.. hollywood has a few of those..i see them popping up all the time..theres that one about the girl hearing herself scream in her phone - thats ripped off from a japanese movie..

    I have watched Jenni, Juno about 2 years ago. I did not like it. Overly cute and just have that same unrealistic feel that a lot of Korean comedies give.
    On the other hand, I adored Little Miss Sunshine.
    From the looks of the trailer, Juno maybe similar to J,J, but they're definitely different. I doubt that the Korean served as inspiration. There are a lot of cases of teenage pregnancy after all.

    In my opinion, trailer looked too flippant/"whip-smart" but movie was actually enjoyable. The lead, Juno, got on my nerves at first but I really grew to like her (you know, like a real teen). Jason Bateman and her relationship felt authentic to me. So did his relationship with Jennifer Garner. The same stuff happens to all of us, not surprising that there will be parallels in movies.

    Also, hiding a pregnancy doesn't happen in this movie.
