cloverfield crew bag

The title for the JJ Abrams produced monster flick has been in question since day one. Originally it was codenamed Cloverfield (presumably named after the street and airport near Bad Robot’s production office). On set they used a bunch of different production names: Slusho!, Cheese, and Chocolate Outrage.

You can see by this exclusive photo I was sent by someone on the crew, that even the production didn’t know what to call all itself. Yes, even the production crew gifts (in this case a brown messenger bag) featured a bunch of different titles crossed out.

The trailer and website have gone by the title “1-18-08″ which also serves as the film’s date. At Comic Con they released a set of four posters which featured such titles as “”Terrifying”, “Monstrous”, and “Furious”, which further confused the mess. And then there was the case of the trademark filed by JJ’s attorney, “Overnight“. That seemed like the best title out of the bunch to me.

But now BloodyDisgusting is reporting that the film will be titled “WRECK”. If true, than I have no idea how they settled upon that name out of the options proposed thus far. At this point it seems to me that they need a title, and they need one now. Because the branding of 1-18-08 is already out there, and you can’t pull a switch late into the promotion for the film. What do you guys think 1-18-08 should be titled? Is “Wreck” a good name?

It should simply be called "1-18-08"

Not only does everyone know the title but its catchy and reminds people that it's comign soon. I think the name "wreck" or "Monstrous" are weak. If they had any 'real' name I thought that Overnight or Cloverfield were best.

my final choice is 1-18-08. Easy, catchy, and to the point...this thing will come and get you on Jan 18.
  • They should title it 9-11 x 100.
  • Matt
    A little unneeded moneybags.

I would also hate for them to call it "Wreck"; sounds silly and cartoony. I agree "Overnight" is a better choice, but 1-18-08 is fine as well.

Do you guys think there will be some parallel reality element to this movie? Perhaps pretending a power outage in the middle of the movie, making us feel like it's really happening as we're watching it? I think that sort of thing would be cool.
  • Billy TwoRivers
Wreck is a horrible title and a stupid mistake for what has been, up to now, a unique marketing campaign of a film whose quality we really know nothing about and yet are quite interested in.
  • $ J Money $
I think the "1-18-08" MySpaces will play a huge role in this movie's marketing come November and December and even the days leading up to the movie. I will definately see this film at midnight to kind of play it real time.

Matt as far as power outages go...it would be a neat idea but very hard to actually follow through with. Many theatres just run their screens and leave it be. It would take a lot of work. Yes it would add to the movie but not too practical.
  • CSpuppydog
I think that Overnight was decent name.. but "wreck"? I dunno I dont really liek it. I think they should just call it Cloverfield cause that is what im so used to callign it now.
  • dbunker
Wreck is very appropriate as in this movie IS a wreck from the sound of things

Overnight was ok, and 1-18-08 was an interesting tile (and actually sounds nicer than the rest)

How bout this for a title?
    "This-Movie-with-never-live-up-to-the-hype-given-to-it-but-the-studio-already-paid-for-it-so-here-it-is"
  • PG
    1-18-08, period.
  • Yup, smartest move would be to go with 1-18-08. Would also be a great idea to end up with the original title after all the speculation and subsequent guesses out there. :-)

"How bout this for a title?
    “This-Movie-with-never-live-up-to-the-hype-given-to-it-but-the-studio-already-pa"

Immaturity and fail at it's best.
  • Matt
    1-18-08 FTW
  • Zach
    I personally kinda like Cloverfield...
  • Marc
well "Wreck" is a horrible name for a movie like this... now if it was about a huge car from disney's cars that attacks NYC then maybe i may understand that title..

but i think "Overnight" is the best title they can have.. meaning that all of there lives change overnight.. make sense..

but if they made the title "1-18-08" then that would be good too... but its too simple... so i think "Overnight" would be good =]
  • dbunker
“How bout this for a title?
    “This-Movie-with-never-live-up-to-the-hype-given-to-it-but-the-studio-already-pa”
Immaturity and fail at it’s best."...

Wow... you have me beat, now you can go boast to all your friends that you gave someone the business... on a message board.
At least I helped your self esteem out a bit...

However, the LEAST you could have done is quote me correctly....
    “This-Movie-with-never-live-up-to-the-hype-given-to-it-but-the-studio-already-paid-for-it-so-here-it-is"
The Least I can do is correct my grammar gaff:
    “This-Movie-will-never-live-up-to-the-hype-given-to-it-but-the-studio-already-paid-for-it-so-here-it-is"

Again the 1-18-08 title is probably the best
  • I very much like 1-18-08, but if it's between Overnight and Wreck, I'd choose Overnight!
  • Perhaps with "Wreck" the mean Statue of Liberty? Perhaps it will pley role in the movie, but... I personally like Cloverfield. It became to very familiar word last months.
  • Moneybags
It should be Outrage! as isn, IT IS AN OUTRAGE THT THEY EVEN HAD THE NOTION TO NAME IT WRECK!!!!!!!!! in my opinion I like Overnight and 1-18-08 too much!
  • $ J Money $
As Abrams and his people read this they now throw out Wreck as a possible choice of movie titles. Until next week Abrams...when you release another single word title for a movie...
  • Chris
1-18-08 or Cloverfield would be best, Wreck jus sounds stupid. If i had to choose between 1-18-08 or Cloverfield, i would go for 1-18-08 an for the UK 18-1-08.
  • PeAnUt05
    I like Overnight
the thought of a movie called monstrous or furious or even wrek jus doesn't feel like a movie I'd want to see. JJ if u read these, you got my vote on Overnight
  • Mark
Clue one - Trailer - folks celebrating suddenly are interupted by the sound of an explosion, a huge animal and large chunks of New York screeming through the air at them. "It's huge..."

Clue two - one faux website takes you to a page that speaks about the inpermanence of extinction and how the world will be inherited.

Clue three - another faux web takes you to a page talking about mysterious sounds picked up on the ocean floor. A page within that site takes you to CNN and a story about monsters in the deep as possible explanations for the mysterious sound that scientist discovered in 2002.

The title should be 1-18-08 because if they gave it the title that it should have, the one given to the movie or series of movies they are re-making, the viral hype wouldn't work and they would just have to tell you we are re-doing (take your pick):

    Godzilla
    Rodan
    or some other Toho movie
maybe that British knockoff of Godzilla (the title I can't remember as I haven't seen it since I was a kid).

I suppose that I could be all wet...but it sure doesn't seem like it.

What the hell is a Smarba??
  • stevo
Well i know that it had to come from the deeps of the sea
    because

    the statue of liberties
    head was thrown
    to the new yrok streets.

    what i am thinking is
    that its The sea monster
    known as cthulu
    a giant
    squid like head with
    tentacles
    .

but i think the movie should be called::

    "end"
    "the night rise"
or "cthulu's rise" thats if its cthulu tho

    but other then that

    i really like
    "the night rise"

cuz it came up at night.

    so thats my decision.

    But then
    what if the trailer is
messing with our minds making us
wonder ..but then again its soo
    obvious..
we know that this thing..is alive and huge..
so it has to be sumthing
    other then godzilla
it has to be sumthing we havent seen before..
    and the no title
    idea was
    good

    leaving the audience thinking..
    shuure had me thinking.
but then i think its a goood title i picked
    "the night rise"
  • stevo
oh and why would they want to call it

by the date it comes out??
    wtf??
    01/08/2008??

thats the day the movie comes out
so the movie isnt based on the day it comes out
cuz that is in jan 08
    and thats next year..

but another name ithink it should be other then
    "the night rise"

    is

    "the rift"

    cuz earthquakes
were also being reported on the news
and the rift is the crack on the earth..
under the sea...which makes more land
    and moves the land mass..
    which causes
    the earthquakes
    and the firballs being thrown
could possibly be from the rift
cuz molten lava comes from the rift
    so thats my possibility

i think it came from the rift..
    or its cthulu..

    "the night rise"
    or
    "the rift"

    A whale which touched London

    Leader
    Sunday January 22, 2006
    The Observer

Whales were not 'among the mammals we left behind' in the ocean 'billions of years ago', as we said in the article below. Mammals evolved on dry land and some, among them the ancestors of whales, later moved into the sea and evolved to suit their new environment.

The moving sight of man and whale united in extremis in the shallows of the Thames was a reminder that, in our over-scrutinised and over-regulated world, Nature still possesses some fathomless mysteries. Leviathan's strange and forlorn visit to London was a moment of reality television that provoked only the finest emotions - pity and wonder, and finally sorrow - among thousands of onlookers.

    Article continues

Those who lined the Embankment to watch the whale's doomed journey maybe felt a genetic twinge of nostalgia, too. When we crawled out of the ocean those billions of years ago, the whale was among the mammals we left behind. The threat of its extinction still hangs heavily on the world's conscience. Perhaps we love whales because they do more than connect us to deep waters. In folklore, the majestic whale is wise and all-powerful. In the Old Testament book of Jonah, the authorised version's 'great fish' that swallows the prophet eventually tunes its radar to the right frequency, receives the word of God and, after a long weekend in the depths, saves the errant holy man by spewing him up on to dry land, whence he goes on to rescue the reprobates of Nineveh from the wrath of the Almighty.
Either way, we have obligations. Which makes it so tragic that this time London's efforts to repay an ancient debt failed.
  • Here are some taglines I came up with-

    There go the reflection pools!
    Aw hell nah!
It parted the sea...then NEW YORK CITY!
    Imagine 9-11...but times 1000
It came with shitting dick tentacles
Escape from New York-Cuz theres a monster in it
    What would Rudy do? 9-11 9-11 9-11
  • Samantha
I think it will be a one word title. I would really like it if Cloverfield was the name of the movie. It's catchy.

THERE IS A NEW IMAGE ON THE OFFICAL SITE. LY YANG AND HIS RECIPE. THE NUMBERS ARE A CODE. FLIP TO THE BACK AND SEE THE INSTRUCTIONS. YOU’LL HAVE TO CONVERT YOU SETTINGS TO OR.

The movie could be called Tehehe Monsters for all I care, as long as it kicks ass. Thats what truly matters.
  • Pan
I think that moneybags, needs to get his brain in and shush its mouth. That would be a horrible name, I would go with Cloverfield or just keep it 01-18-2008. So bags, go bag yourself and just croke.
  • matthew fox
have they confirmed that 1-18-08 is actually a release date? I'm thinking that could be the title and the date the party in the teaser takes place is actually 1-18-08, this movie feels a lot like lost
  • Karen
i think it should just be called cloverfeild. i like it. when i first saw the name without even thinking i new it had to do with some godzilla like creature. cloverfeild just sound right for the monsters "nickname" and the title of the movie. i think that name will be remember alot more that wreck, or 1-18-08.
